After seeing this I checked out your other posts. In W.Cork the names Ronan,Sullivan and Hayes are intertwined. I also know of a Ronan married to a White on an 1860 census in NYC, is that your family? You may want to check out irishgenealogy.ie if you haven' t already found it.

I know of some Ronan family members who came to Grand Rapids from Wexford, Ireland. Some of the names on grave markers at the old St. Andrew's cemetery are not known to me, I haven't been able to attach them to the Patrick Ronan clan who came to Grand Rapids in the mid 19th century.

Wow! I wasn't expecting you to be related to Peggy. If Buggy is the correct spelliing and you did say your James spent or may have spent time in New York, right? When it comes to your family saying Tyrone and my find in Fermanagh, I forgot to add the town/village Ballymacaffrey in Fermanagh is where the surname originated is extremely close to the boarder it shares with Co.Tyrone.
The other names I have in my McCaffrey family are McNally and Martin. There are several others that might be but are so common I'm unsure, McDonald, Henry, Cunningham are a few but they could end up on the Ronan side too.
Now the name Mahony is the last name of Patrick's witness for his Naturalzation inde in 1856. I found these families connected in W.Cork, where I also found a small group of Gilhoolys (Patrick's mother's maiden name.)the one name I have found both names having a connection in W.Cork is Donovan. I have believed for a while that this was probably where my Ronan root lie. I also found from the 11th St.address Patrick gave on his index that he was living with a John Ronan which is either a brother or uncle, right next door is a John McCaffrey and doors down from 2 McNally's (Anna McCaffrey Ronan's mother's name)
You know, the thing about W.Cork is their records are not available at brsgenealogy.com they do have some at irishgenalogy.ie and this site is completly free it is a newer site but they have had quite a few records updates as of late.
I have alot on my Ronan family in NYC, if I have it, I'm more than willing to share.

Dani

Hi Carroll, Is Bridget from Ireland? If so, is there any indication that her surname may have been altered upon her arrival, as so many were? I'm working on Anna McCaffrey Ronan's family and came across a post in the Fermanagh forum about a Mary Nolan Buggy born about 1823 to John and Mary McCaffrey, coming to the US about 1850 but it didnt give specifics as to where she settled.
I still think that there is a chance our families could be one in the same. A recent discovery between an address from a naturalization index and an 1857 NYC directory makes me 99% positive my Ronan's are from West Cork. My theory is maybe there is a chance your family's lore is correct but it wasn't associated with the right person.

Danielle
I have a James Ronan in my collection of family names that I have come across during my research.
Tom could be Thomas Pete Ronan who was my grandfather. He was born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1870. James and Michael both were born in Saginaw, Michigan. I have the date of birth for James as 1878. There were also two daughter's...Mary and Elisa who were born in Canada. The father was Thomas Ronan who immigrated from Ireland to Canada and later Saginaw, Michigan. He died in 1880. Thomas Pete Ronan came out to California where he met my grandmother Grace Courtney. He died the month after my father was born, August 1911.
My next step is to locate the town in Ireland where my great grandfather is from.

I'm looking for any information about John & Bridget Ronan. Both were born in Ireland and were living in Carbon Twp., Huntingdon, PA during the 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s. I cannot find any information about John & Bridget after the 1880 census. They had four children: Alicia, John C., Bridget Mary, and Margaret. John was very prominent in his community and served in township government, as well as a school board member. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Wonderful finding someone else whose ancestors lived in Carrigfadda! My gg-grandparents were Edward Rashly/Rashleigh and Mary Cussen/Cushen who were married in 1841 in Rosscarbery. Mary was born about 1822 probably in Rosscarbery. She came to work for Edward (first wife Catherine Tanner deceased)and married him several months later. I descend from their daughter Mary who married Daniel McCarthy Feb 14, 1867 in Dunmanway. They immigrated in 1867 to northern NY State west of Malone. At least two sisters remained in Ireland; Ann married Tom Driscoll of Myross, and Elizabeth married James McCarthy. All of Mary and Edward's children were born in Carrigfadda or Carrigagrenane. I would love to share information about families living in this townland. Jeanne (McCarthy) DeSantis of Virginia

Hi Carroll,

I wanted to see how your searching is going. I found a 1900 census of my Ronan family on it gave me a birth of Aug 1836. Which, was the birth I had for the Patrick born to William and Mary Brien in Cork. Also, it said Patrick came in 1855 and that could work as long as he wasn't on the 1849 ship. I found a few possibilities for an arrival but no distinct connection.

What might interest you is that I found 4 documents at Ancestry on a Betsy Ronan, a common nickname for Elizabeth in those times. I feel confidant they are the same woman. First, there test book entries for the Immigrant Bank in NY where a Betsy is making deposits for her son Patrick in 1865 and 1857. She states she is from Dunmanway, Co. Cork.
After this I was able to track down a Census from 1850 of Betsy Ronan, 50, living in the 19th Ward of NYC with a Jas Ronan, Pat Ronan and daughter Betsy. I found a ship registry for the two Betsy's in 1848 neither James or Patrick are on the manifest.

I know your James ended up in Mass. but who's to say he didn't come through NY first. I have started to entertain that perhaps Patrick came in somewhere else and ended up in Manhattan. If the name Gilhooly on my Patrick's Death Certificate is correctly spelled the name is tied to Northwestern Ireland particularly Leitrim but I am finding next to nothing on the name anywhere. Also I never applied the fact that Elizabeth might not be the name she was born with. When England outlawed the Catholic religion they angelized names too. They changed my G-G-G Grandfather's name from Mathias to Mathew and possibly his father's from Jacobus to James.

Hope I haven't been to much of killjoy.

Be well, Danielle

James RONAN son of Thomas and Eliz.

I am looking to start my search in Ireland, but only have sketchy info to date. James Ronan, my ggrandfather, married Bridgit Bugby in 1853 in Lawrence, MA, at the age of 21, making his birth abt 1832 in Ireland. The church record indicates he is son of Thomas Ronan and Eliz. Family lore says he may have come from Tyrone or Armagh. Any thoughts on where to go with this info?
Many thanks. Carroll

By the way I think Elizabeth's last name is actually spelt Gilhuly or Gilhooly but I'm going with the first and the name is mostly found in Leitrim which would go with your Tyrone or Armagh but there are always stragglers everywhere.
Patrick's daughter Anna's mother in law is a Fitzpatrick-McNamara, a Fitzpatrick of Co.Clare not Laois,Kilkenny or Cavan and getting anything out of Clare is like pulling a tooth from a tiger !

Carroll, This is going to be long... Patrick Ronan is my great great grandfather, pretty much from the onset of my research I have found him to be a part of the Ronan's of E. Cork. Ballymacoda, Youghal area. On April 12 1849 David, a carpenter(assumed uncle may now be brother ) brought Patrick, his own son William and a John Ronan to New York on the ship Industry with him and there might be an Ellen in there. The first time I find Patrick in the States after is on the 1860 Census, he's in NYC, married to Anna McCaffrey ( Annie later Catherine same person ) and has two sons Thomas 1858 and James 1860 ( named for their fathers ). He's on 1870 and 1880 Census reports too cant find 1900 and 1910 but the family lived on E. 58th Street for over 20 odd years. Patrick and Anna would have several more children. Catherine 1862 ( Katie, Kitty) , William 1867, Joseph 1868, Mary Catherine 1869, and Anna, my great grandmother in 1879. Patrick stayed a carpenter and can be found in a few Manhattan and NYC directories as such, he died on April 25th 1912.
I actually had Patrick as the son of David's brother William who died in 1837 in Glenawn, Co.Cork, the thing is we do not have David and William's parents and now I'm thinking that perhaps Thomas and Elizabeth are their parents or he's a cousin but we're fairly sure they died sometime before 1849. I found a Sarah Clayton on Ancestry through Patrick, she thought Patrick was a son of David's ( I never thought that ) but now we're stuck with finding out how Thomas is related to David and exactly how old Patrick really was.His death certificate is totally wrong when it comes to age and dates in the US. I have it up on my tree along with his wife Anna's and their daughter Anna's Baptisimal.
Brsgenealogy, did the same thing to me and while it helped me find one entire branch of my family and helped I helped some other people with theirs by purchasing my mistakes, I havent gotten a hit on Patrick with Thomas as a father which is fustrating me to no end ! I did only find this out earlier this week but nonetheless my gut actually proved to be some what wrong this time, ugh !

Danielle

Danielle,
Well, this is intriguing. So, you have a Patrick Ronan whose parents are Thomas Ronan and Elizabeth Gilholy(sp). I have tried brsgenealogy recently with no success? After a while, the $5 begin to add up. Can you direct me to this family in Cork? Do you know his siblings? Did Patrick come to the US? If so, where did he settle?
Thank you. Carroll

I have a Patrick with the parents of Thomas and Elizabeth Gilholy or Gilloly, not sure of exact spelling.Have you tried brsgenealogy.com you have to register and if you want to view its $5 a file but if you just run the search for James Ronan, the year and with his Father'e first name Thomas you can see if there are any hits. I didn't come up with anything if Tyrone or Armagh for my Patrick as far as I know all mine are in Cork. You should try an all over Ireland search you might be surprised.

Danielle

I am planning a visit with descendants of Joseph Ronan and his wife Fannie Ferriara. They were married, we believe, in Fall River early 1918/late 1917, and had the following children, all born in Fall River: Maryann, Kathryn, Robert, Elizabeth, John. Can anyone find record of this marriage, or births of children? I have Joseph's registration for US Navy on 28 Feb 1918, as well as son's Robert and John's. Also have census records for this family. Just looking for marriage and children's birth records to show to the family on my visit. Thanks for any help.
Do you know of any connection with Fall River? I have finally figured out that one reason there are so many Ronans in PA and MA/RI (Fall River) is the cotton/weaving industry so many irish americans were a part of. Also there was a steamer line that traveled from Fall River, to NY, and to PA. There was a Michael F. Ronan that was the steamship Columbia's quartermaster in 1915. There was also another Michael F. (I think this one is mine) that was a watchman. From all the birth records I have found, these two men were born within months of one another and may have been sons of brothers.

I have a Passport application on a Michael Ronan found while researching Ronans in my family. This Michael was born Co Tipperary Ireland 7 Aug 1873; father was William Ronan. Michael came to US about 1896 and was naturalized 26 Jul 1902 in Schnectady NY. He traveled back to Ireland in 1915 to visit brothers and sisters. It also states he lived in Worcester for some years upon arrival in US. He may have had a married sister Margaret Mahoney living in Worcester in 1920. I share this in the hopes someone searching a Michael Ronan will find this helpful.

This is really odd. I am Laurie Ronan, wife of Richard. I was really into genealogy for several years but by the time this was posted, the addiction had waned, therefore I never saw it until now. Richard and I are in S.Carolina and have recently begun to reassemble the family. Richard daughter Laurie has been instrumental in getting us all together. The interest has always been there, but time and space has been an issue as well as uh, life?! Actually Ricky called and told us he had run into one of you brothers. I thought he said David, but possible it was you. This is quite interesting, and Richard has often said he would love to meet up with his half brothers.
Hi Kathy,
I know William and his wife's children--Katherine A (Katie) (abt 1892) and Mary E (abt 1895.) They lived with my GrGrandfather and his wife--Daniel P. Long and Nellie Burke. They moved to El Paso Texas in 1904. Nellie died soon after that (1906?) supposedly on a trip to Massachusetts to help her sick mother. My grandfather and his brother (John W. and Daniel) were then placed in an orphange. I found the girls in El Paso in 1910 living with 2 other women. Not sure where they went from there. They are listed as nieces--and I believe their mother was Daniel Long's sister. Hope this helps- Laurie
