There might be several unrelated Roosevelt families related to Catholic Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley who was a known cousin of Teddy Roosevelt. With this is a riverboat man in Pittsburgh named Nicholas Roosevelt who was Teddy Roosevelts great uncle.

This is the Catholic Roosevelt family that Eleanor Roosevelt is always fighting with over government provided textbooks in Catholic Schools in the 1950's.

Are they related one being Protestant and the other Catholic. From their point of view, no way. From DNA point of view, you bet.

I have a deed dated 1739 conveying property to Nicholas Roosevelt. My family Bible lists this Nicholas marrying Elizabeth Thurman in 1757. The deed states Nicholas was a goldsmith. It appears his son Nicholas (born 1760) married a Margaret Cremer. There is also an Elizabeth Roosevelt born 1758 and dying 1760.

Another Elizabeth born 1762 marries John Thurman Gilchrist.

Anyone know how these folks relate to Theodore or Franklin?

Timothy F. Beard's book The Roosevelt Family in America: A Genealogy

Beard's book apparently has new research on whether Jacob Roosevelt was actually a Roosevelt but rather a different unrelated Roosevelts from Germany. The Daughters of the American Revolution no longer validates a certain lineage based on this research (that is where I got the information). Unfortunately, Beard's book is rare and I am unable to find a copy. I really want to read is conclusions, which the DAR say are found on pages 19-20 and 99-101 (The Roosevelt Family in America: A Genealogy by Timothy F. Beard and Henry B. Hoff).

Does anyone have anymore information on this or know where I can read more about it or read the book itself?

Thanks.
Pete

Roosevelts' from Poughkeepski, New York

I am trying to find information on Mariah Roosevelt. She was born in 1839 or 1840. I do not know her maiden name.

Mariah married Andrew E. Roosevelt but I do not know when. I believe it was in the 1850's. I believe Andrew died in 1896 or 1897.

They had two children. Frank T. born 1864 and Mary L. born 1862.

Frank married Lucy but I do not know when or what her maiden name was.
They had a child named, Blanche. She was born in 1892 and married Charles "Donald" Stevens. They had two children. Frank was born in 1915. There was another child born in 1916 but not sure if the child is Laurence (listed on a census) or Florence (listed on another census).

Mariah Roosevelt appears to have "adopted" a male child, William. He shows up on the 1900 census as William Roosevelt born 1884.

William is my GGrandfather. His tombstone reads William J Roosevelt born 1875 and died 1958.

It is told to the family he was actually William Johnson. I would like to find out about his background. He married Olivia L. Van Keuren and had tow children. Edward Samuel Roosevelt and Olive Roosevelt.

If anyone knows Mariah's maiden name or anyother information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Betti Roosevelt O'Brian

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 788.

City of La Crosse

W. A. ROOSEVELT, plumber and gas-fitter; was born Sept. 17, 1833, in Oakland Co., Mich.; moved with his parents into Detroit in 1837, remaining there until 1840, when he removed to Sandusky City, Ohio; he learned the machinist's trade in Sandusky, and, in 1853, emigrated to La Crosse, where he arrived Jan. 17; upon his arrival at La Crosse, he chartered the steam ferry-boat Honeoye, which he ran during the first part of the season, when he purchased a third interest in the Delia, and was engineer on this for a short time, running between Dubuque and St. Paul; he disposed of his interest in this boat in the fall of 1857, and, up to 1860, was engaged most of the time as engineer and captain on the Mississippi River. From 1860 to 1869, he was constantly engaged as a steamboat engineer; Jan. 1, 1869, he established his present business in La Crosse, since which time he has successfully conducted it.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information.
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, JR. - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, JR.

Rank and organization: brigadier general, U.S. Army. Place and date: Normandy invasion, 6 June 1944. Entered service at: Oyster Bay, N.Y. Birth: Oyster Bay, N.Y. G.O. No.: 77, 28 September 1944. Citation: for gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, in France. After 2 verbal requests to accompany the leading assault elements in the Normandy invasion had been denied, Brig. Gen. Roosevelt's written request for this mission was approved and he landed with the first wave of the forces assaulting the enemy-held beaches. He repeatedly led groups from the beach, over the seawall and established them inland. His valor, courage, and presence in the very front of the attack and his complete unconcern at being under heavy fire inspired the troops to heights of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice. Although the enemy had the beach under constant direct fire, Brig. Gen. Roosevelt moved from one locality to another, rallying men around him, directed and personally led them against the enemy. Under his seasoned, precise, calm, and unfaltering leadership, assault troops reduced beach strong points and rapidly moved inland with minimum casualties. He thus contributed substantially to the successful establishment of the beachhead in France .

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient SPANISH AMERICAN WAR

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of The Congress the Medal of Honor to

LIEUTENANT COLONEL THEODORE ROOSEVELT
UNITED STATES ARMY

for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt distinguished himself by acts of bravery on 1 July, 1898, near Santiago de Cuba, Republic of Cuba, while leading a daring charge up San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, in total disregard for his personal safety, and accompanied by only four or five men, led a desperate and gallant charge up San Juan Hill, encouraging his troops to continue the assault through withering enemy fire over open countryside. Facing the enemy's heavy fire, he displayed extraordinary bravery throughout the charge, and was the frst to reach the enemy trenches, where he quickly killed one of the enemy with his pistol, allowing his men to continue the assault. His leadership and valor turned the tide in the Battle for San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Oyster Bay, New York

Cemetery: Young's Memorial Cemetery

Born: October 27, 1858 at New York, NY

Died: January 6, 1919

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/roose...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt

Note: This is not my ancestry.
James Hamilton Roosevelt born 01/05/1821 New York City. Married Elizabeth Hassell 07/08/1848 in Edwards Co. IL. Per family history father JAMES ROOSEVELT, mother CATHARINE M. JONES.
Children of JAMES HAMILTON ROOSEVELT are: Bertha b. 1849, Clara b. 1851, Frederic James b. 2/17/1852 and Alice b. 1857. Very interesting story re. JAMES AND CATHARINE ROOSEVELT. James was disinherited by his father JAMES (JACOBUS) ROOSEVELT because he wanted to marry CATHARINE JONES also but she chose the younger JAMES. I have not been able to prove this.

Elliott Roosevelt's latest descendants

I have been interested for many years in the Roosevelt family geneology.

It would seem that by now, the grandchildren of Elliott Roosevelt are married and have children of their own. Can anyone give a fifth generation of Roosevelts, including dates of birth?
lf so, can anyone also say where his grandchildren are residing and if any are pursuing political careers? I note that Elliott, III, who is 41, is partner in a Roosevelt Capital firm, belongs to the Dallas (TX) Council on Foreign Relations, and is on the board of the Jefferson Award Foundation. As one who has written ex-tensively on political dynasties, it has been a long time since any of FDR's heirs have taken to politics successfully.

Ruth Chandler Lindsley is the oldest of Elliott's twelve grandchildren at 47 and the youngest is Chandler Caroline Roosevelt at 39. One, Dana Donner Roosevelt (son of Wm. Donner Roosevelt) is apparently deceased.
Hi Teri,
I just found your message board listing re the Roosevelt line.
I have both the Oyster Bay and Hyde Park lines, from Claes Martenszen Van Rosenvelt to the childen of Theodore and Alice Lee / Edith Carow on the Oyster Bay line and the children of Franklin and Eleanor on the Hyde Park line. There are many familie names in between, including Robert Livingston, 1746-1813, who administered the oath of office to George Washington.Let me know if I can help you in any way.
I'm looking for any info on Theodore's sister, Corinne, 1861-1933, who married a D. Robinson 1855-1918. I believe that
line is where my husband's family is connected.
contact me at ealumina@aol.com

I am interested in Jacob Rosevelt, Hadley, Mass, 1850s in particular. I have the information from the TR Journal, but nothing that predates Jacob and his family in Hadley. I would like to share family information to expand that which is already documented.

Roosevelts came from near HAARLEM, NORTH HOLLAND, FDR's own words: "...There's a tradition in our family that the
Roosevelts came from somewhere near HAARLEM...". [FDR to Delgado in 1938: Franklin Delano Roosevelt library,
President's Personal File 73; also, see pg. 25 of FDR: A BIOGRAPHY by Ted Morgan (1985). HAARLEM is the artistic & scientific center of NORTH HOLLAND. "FDR prefered to believe that he descended from the more prominent
HAARLEM ROOSEVELTS rather than from the common
Vossemeer Roosevelts, who produced nothing but clergymen
and schoolmasters. In 1938, he told interviewer, Virginia
Pearce Delgado: "I don't believe a word about this Zeeland
business [Zeeland was the province to which the island of
Tholen belonged]. I think it's all a grand publicity stunt someone thought up to atttact tourists off the beaten track.
There's a tradition in our family that the Roosevelts came from
somewhere near HAARLEM..."" --pg. 25 of FDR: A BIOGRAPHY by Ted Morgan (1985) & in notes section of his book reference the FDR statement to Delgado is given as FDR
to Delgado the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library [FDRL],
President's Personal File [PPF] 73. --Gregory Thompson,
a ROOSEVELT-descendant, my 7th-great grandmother is
ANNA MARGARIET ROOSEVELT m.
