I am also interested in George Ropes of Salem Massachusetts d. 1670 and was married to Mary. They had a daughter (also Mary) who married John Norman [who is my 8th great grandfather]

I am American-born, but live in Australia and don't have access to hard copy books on Salem. Can you please point me to a reference for his indenture or arrival in the Americas?

By now, you have probably found, as I just did, that there were two Marjorie Ropes, one born in 1891 to Louis W. Ropes and Marie Taggart and another Marjorie born in 1906 to William B. Ropes and Emma (who later married Albert W. Custer). This second Marjorie was the sister to Ray. I have been unable to find other siblings for the first Marjorie. She never married and died in Amherst in 1981 at age 90.

I've been researching the Ropes family and may have the answer to your question about Louis Wheelock Ropes' first wife. I found a notice in the 26 August 1890 New York Times Archives about the marriage between Louis W. Ropes and Marie Taggart, daughter of Mary Phillips Disbrow Taggart and James M. P. Taggart. They were married in 1890. Contact me for more.

It's been a long old time since you posted your message but we'll see if this manages to find you.

Donald Stephen Rope is my second cousin thrice removed. I'm related to him through his mother, Sarah Smith, as her mother was my ancestor's sister. I consequently know a lot about her siblings and parentage.

I'd love to learn more about Donald Stephen Rope - I believe he went to Canada?

The Essex Institue in Salem would have info. He is mentioned in the Salem history. He came as an indentured servant in 1628.

I am searching for the burial place of Civil War veteran Eli H. Ropes. He died 11/9/1898 at Richmond, Staten Island, New York, but may have been a resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey at the time.

He was the son of Jonathan M. Ropes and was survived by a wife, a daughter, and two sons.

#1)John Ropes b 1725 married Sarah Titcomb b 1722. #2 They had Mary Ropes 1753-1824 who wed Ebenezer Cressey Porter b 1744. #3)They had Ebenezer Porter 1780-1841 married Mary Griffen 1786-1855. #4)They had Sarah Jane Porter 20 July 1823 and Ann Wilson Porter Dec 1812 (among others). Ann married 12 Feb 1829 to James Whittle and had Anna 9 Nov 1843. Sarah Jane Porter 1824-1903 married Joseph B Wales 1822-1882. Anna Whittle was the niece of Sarah Jane Porter Wales. Anna lived with the Wales family for a time about 1860 Census.
These Beverely and Salem, MA families above, are all related to the Patch, Woodbury, Dodge, Cressey families.

I'm not sure what the connection is to the WHITTLE surname included in the query, but I'd be very interested in any information on Whittles in Salem, MA, particularly during the period 1780-1860.

There was a James Whittle who m 12 Feb 1832 Nancy Porter, the dau. of Ebenezer Porter and Nancy Ropes. Perhaps that's the tie-in here?

Do you have any lineage information on Horace C. (perhaps for Codman)Ropes b. 1859 in Italy, although he was American, he emigrated in 1863 and he died September 1944 and is buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father was b. in Massachusetts and his mother in Maine. He was a civil engineer and in 1920 & 1930 censuses and he resided at 122 Franklin Avenue W., Minneapolis, with his wife Corinne. In the 1900 Census he lived at 202 Church St., Clinton, Worcester Co., Mass. and is listed as a boarder in the home of John and Anna Worcester. He was 41 at that time and is listed as divorced, from whom I do not know, but there is a marriage for Horace Ropes and Kittie Fall on 6-15-1892 in New Mexico. This may or may not be the same Horace. He also lived at one time in Framingham and Boston, Mass.
Also, do you know who Opel J. Ropes is?
I would like to know anything relating to his parentage or anything else you may know about this line.

Yes, I am still interested. George Ropes, and daughter Mary, were ancestors of my great gradfather, Solon B. Wales b Beverly, MA 1850 and d Monroe, CT 1944
I am trying to fill in all the branches (and twigs) who married into the HURD, WALES and other families with their ancestors also.

Your post is about two years old now, so I don't know if you're still interested in the information, but George Ropes is apparently in my family tree as well. I have some information on his descendents, but it's from an unpublished family history by one of my relatives. She didn't document it very well, so I can't vouch for its accuracy. I'm in the process of verifying it now, but it will take awhile.

I have a Ropes family history from the first, George Ropes, born 1618 through to current date (2006) as it pertains to my line. I am searching for the name of the first wife of Louis Wheelock Ropes, born 6/2/1685, with whom he had two children, Marjorie R. Ropes, born 5/27/1891 and Ray W. Ropes, possibly born in Elkhart, IN. Mrs. Ropes divorced my grandfather and married Albert W. Custer and subsequently moved to Washington state where they established Custer, Washington. I would like to know her first name and Ray Ropes birth date, etc. if anyone knows this information.

married mary Walpole in Ashby st Mary Nfk in 1787 they
were both widowers.

They had James, William and Charlotte the family moved to Norwich and later Cambridgeshire.

Seek information about WILLIAM HALL ROPES (b.1853 St Petersburg, Russia-d.1905 Providence, Rhode Island. Buried at Swan Point Cemetery). His father was from Massachusetts and Mother from England. I don't know their names. Someone said they think his father was Captain of a ship that went to Russia and back.

He married Feb 17, 1875 in ?? to ANNIE MARIA CHAPIN (b.1854 Mass-d.1903). She was the daughter of WILLIAM CARGILL CHAPIN and SARAH B. BARTON, who lived in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York. They are buried at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.

WILLIAM HALL ROPES and wife lived in Brooklyn, NY in 1880 and he was a shipping merchant. They also lived in Brooklyn in 1900. They lived at 125 Willow Street in both census'. Children:

Nice to hear back from you - GeorgeRopes came to U S as indentured servant - and was sent back for striking his master - then he came back for second time - he was sheriff of Salem - you probably know all of this. One of ancestors, Benjamin Hardy Ropes md. Lucy Pushee - he wanted to get away from ships and sailing. He owned a farmed near Barre, Vermont - he traded his farm in Vermont for a farm in Iowa - he was apostmaster there in the village of El Dorado, Iowa, Fayette County. His son, Charles Baker Ropes, md. Rebecca Stevens, in Boston and they moved to Iowa also.
I had a 50 year gap in this family for a long time because of the Iowa thing, but finally got it put together several years agao. I think al of the Ropes in U S are related. George came from Sussex - I understand that there is a family re union of the Ropes family each year in Salem, but I haven't been able to find out anything about it - Sharon

The Ropes were all descendents of one man - George Ropes who came to Salem, Mass in 1628 - his wife's name was Mary - they are intermarried with the Hardy Family, Pickering Family, and many others. The Ropes family gave money to start Harvard in 1717 - I am sure you know of the Ropes Mansion in Salem. If you have access thru interlibrary loan, you can get Perkin's History of Salem - it will have everything you need and much, much more. Our family had a part of the French Spoils claim and my greatgrandmother, Mary Anna Duncan Ropes Dewey received her share in 1892 - 92.10 - if you can't find a copy, I know they have one at the Edith Abbott Library in Grand Island, Nebraska - and in the meantime I will look up what I have here.
