I don't know if this is the right branch for you, but my great grandfather was John W. Rosenberger and he died before 1963, his wife's name was Ella Florence Fritts and they had 8 children, my grandfather was the youngest. These Rosenbergers lived in the Shenandoah valley as early as the mid 1700's. They came on the ship Ranier from Rotterdam to Philedelphia. I have a ton of information on this part of my family, perhaps if you have some mixed up names we would be cousins!

Karen, go to the website "findagrave" just google that and the site pops up. When you are there, search for Erasmus Rosenbarger 1796-1875 at the BRushy Valley cemetery in INdiana. His site pops up and some info on him. On the left side of the page you can view the others in the cemetery, so look at his younger children's grave markers, they did not live but a few weeks/months and up to 2 years. Those children have menorah's on their gravemarkers, you will have to look for them carefully, they are not the easiest to find like for the child JACOB the menorah is right under the J. LEt me know if you find it.

JOYCE

I found my Ashkenazi DNA markers by having my DNA tested with 23andme. Right now the kit is $99, last Thanksgiving they dropped the price to $49, can you imagine $49 for having your DNA tested? I emailed EVERYONE! At 23andme, they set the amount of 5 cM (cM is centi-morgan unit of measuring DNA) so your more distant cousins, still important, will not be listed on your account, just the closer ones. I have almost 600 now. Anyway I sent my "raw data" my DNA info to a guy at 23andme and he sent me back a spreadsheet with lots of distant cousins on it, the ones that did not make the 5 cM cutoff. He told me I have Ashkenazi markers. We women are XX (female-female) chromosomes, men are XY (Female-male) so even though half of our dad's DNA flows thru us, we can only find out the X haplogroup (which means where that family originated) not like 100 years ago Ireland, but thousands of years ago. I'm female and only got one haplogroup of K2b1........middle eastern, to include Ashkenazi, and 35,000 years old. However the Askenazi Jews (German Jew) originated in the Rhine valley of Germany. I knew I had the DNA markers, but I needed to find the connection closer than the 35,000 years ago start. It's the Rosenbergs.

JOYCE

Thank you so much for the wealth of information.I have been searching for the connection to our jewish roots for a long time. My husband is jewish. He overheard my father talking. He asked me why was he speaking yiddish? I asked my father. He did not realize he was using yiddish. I asked him where he learned these words. He said from Uncle Minn. He grew up in Belington, West Virgina. He said that Uncle Minn used to say they had ancesters from Niderzel, Germany and they were Jewish. My aunt did the Geneology on the Rosenbergers from Neiderzel,Germany. I am a decendant from the Erasmus Rosenberger family line. I heard that a person could have their DNA checked for jewish markers. I did not know if it was an accurate way of testing. This is great! So many questions are being answered. I have been praying about this! All the Rosenberger relatives that I know are dearly in love with the Lord. My Father is a strong God fearing man. My brother is a preacher. My Grandfather was also very strong godly man! Such a long heritage of God loving people. I can not thank you enough for all the hard work you have put into collecting this information! We have a Rosenberger book that may be of interest to you. I would like to stay in touch.
Thank You Again!!
Karen

Here is something else. I had my DNA tested thru 23andme, and I have Ashkenazi Jew DNA markers. One theory as to the Ashkenazi is they originated (each different "sect" has their own DNA markers due to never moving and inter-marrying) 500-ish years ago in the Rhine valley of Germany. Hmmmmmmmm

JOYCE

Joyce, I think you're right about the children being "born Jewish" and then possibly converting later to their mother's religion (which I believe in this case was either Mennonite or Lutheran, I don't remember which). Asa's daughter Catharine's obituary makes a point of calling her "a good Christian woman"--maybe that was a generic statement that they put on everybody's obituaries back then, but then again maybe it was because the family was known to be Jewish.

I was looking up menorah meanings because I wondered if maybe it was something like the swastika is--where it used to have one meaning, and now has a different one. I was curious if there was a possibility that menorahs ever meant something in addition to being Jewish. But I haven't found any evidence for that so I think that the odds are they were Jewish after all.

I can't think of ANY reason that they would have Menorah's on their grave markers other than being Jewish. If they were not Jewish (at one time??) having a Menorah would be really random and I think, ahem, a non-Jew would never put one on a grave marker or anything else. The grave markers with the Menorah's on them were from the younger children, kind of like they weren't quite baptised yet, maybe into their "new adopted" religion?

Kgdorf, here are links to the graves I am talking about:
Anthony Rosenbarger: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=47...
Barbary Rosenbarger: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=47...
Jacob Rosenbarger: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=47...

As far as the names go, I think Asa's father Rudolph (son of Erasmus) went by Rosenberger, but Asa spelled it Rosenbarger (as seen in a letter he wrote to his father, and inscribed on their tombstones).

If you want to read the letter from Asa to Rudolph, I have it transcribed on Asa's memorial:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=47...

I'm confident that they must have been Jewish at some point since three of Erasmus's great-grandchildren (young children of Asa Rosenbarger and Rachel Pitman) have menorahs engraved on their tombstones. This is in Brushy Valley Cemetery in Harrison County, Indiana; you can see the photos on Find A Grave. It was later affiliated with a Lutheran church but the earliest marked graves are those of the Rosenbarger children.

Wow you cleared up a lot of info for me, I was wondering of my Rosenberg family was Jewish (I have DNA markers for Ashkenazi)and my 4th great grandmother was Maria Rosenberg and husband Jacob Moak, my mom's maiden name is Moak. That Moak line goes back to Switzerland, off that tree is ancestors with the last name Stauffer from Eggiwil, Switzerland. My 11th great grandfather Christian Stauffer was an anabaptist preacher, he was part of the "Taufer hunt", was put in prison in Thun, had his citizenship taken away and exiled to Germany...............for being anabaptist! But anyway thanks for clearing up the Rosenberg issue, it all kind of fits into place now.

JOYCE

In your original post, you list Nicholas Rosenberger. I am the GGGG Granddaughter of Nicholas Rosenberger (1832-1875). He seems to have immigrated before 1860, and I'm not really sure if his parents immigrated or not. Is this the Nicholas you are talking about? I would love to know what his parent's names are and if you have any documents! Thanks -Rene

Hi,

first of all i would like to emntion that Ujpest is propably not a district of Handlova but nowadays part of Budapest. But that is not very uncommon that people from Handlova/Krickerhau had some events in Budapest (since it was a bigger city not too far away).
Concerning Paul Rosenberg i checked my data from Handlova and i have at least one Paul Rosenberg (*01.01.1886 in Krickerhau/Handlova, oo 05.05.1910 Veronika, Schnuerer in Budapest-Ujpest and oo 11.04.1920 Maria Grollmusz) that was born in 1886. There are some more Rosenbergers from the year of 1886 but all other Paul Rosenberger seem to be born on different dates. Do you have any more information for me as input?

Regards,
R. Weiss

George W. Rosenberger VA 1914 obituary

Transcribed by Morgan Breeden.
The Manassas Journal
Manassas, Virginia
26 June 1914 (page 1)
SHOCK TO THE COMMUNITY
Mr. George W. Rosenberger Circums [Succumbs] After a Sudden Stroke of Paralysis.
At 8 o’clock last Saturday morning, June 20th, this good and valuable man suffered a sudden and severe stroke of paralysis from which he died at 5 o’clock the following morning [June 21, 1914]. The Grace Methodist church, Manassas, could not seat the crowd that attended his funeral there on Tuesday afternoon, the 23rd. An appropriate and discriminating sermon was preached by the pastor, Rev. E. A. Roads. The text, selected by the family, was 2 Cor. 5:1 -- “For we know that if this earthly house of our tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” Rev. Dr. Quarles, pastor of the Manassas Baptist church,
assisted in the services. The body was interred in the Manassas cemetery.
All of the members of his immediate family and all of his near relatives were present except one brother, Nathaniel of Florida. Some of those attending were: His stepmother, Mrs. Levi Rosenberger, of Washington; his brother Abraham and his wife, from Jeffersontown, Va.; his sister, Mrs. Nalls, and his brother John, both of Manassas. He leaves his widow, who was Miss Kate B. MacDonald, of Culpeper, and seven children -- three sons, George L., of Manassas; Allen E., of Norfolk, and J. Wellington, of Willimantic, Conn., all of whom are electricians, and four daughters, Mrs. George W. Wilson, of Washington, whose husband also was present, and Misses Mary, Nellie and Sadie at home in the recently established family residence about five miles from Manassas.
Mr. Rosenberger was 63 years old, a native of Shenandoah county, Va., having lived many years in Culpeper county, near the town of Jeffersontown, but having been for the past twenty-two years a resident of Prince William.
Mr. Rosenberger was of the quiet, gentle, unpretending type. Very early in life he became a Christian -- joining the Methodist church -- and in all the walks of life, to the end of his life he exemplified the beauty of holiness. Implicitly trusted in business and highly esteemed as a neighbor and friend, his death inflicts a real loss upon our community. But it was in the home that the brightest luster of his character shone. His loving loyalty and gentle kindness to his family and their tender affection for him were beautiful to behold and were most admired by those who knew them best.
Note: I am not researching ROSENBERGERs. I just thought this might be helpful to someone. To see more Prince William Co VA records, go to
http://www.pwcgov.org/library/digitalLibrary/

MY great great grandfather was Matthias Rosenberger. I learned he served in the Civil War. He was in the 50th Engineers Regiment New York. Furthermore...

The 50th, known as Stuart's regiment, and later as the 50th
engineers, was organized at Elmira, of companies from the middle
and western parts of the state, which were mustered into the U.
S. service Sept. 18, 1861, for a three years' term.

It left the state 850 strong, Sept. 21, for Washington; was
ordered to Hall's hill, Va., and assigned to the 3d brigade of
Gen. Porter's division. On Oct. 22, the regiment was converted
by special orders from the war department into a regiment of
engineers and ordered to Washington, where instruction was
received by the men in their new duties.

In March, 1862, with the volunteer engineers' brigade, Army of
the Potomac, the 50th moved to Yorktown and worked faithfully in
digging trenches, constructing bridges and earthworks, etc.,
until the evacuation of that city. At White House the command
was divided into several detachments, which were engaged in
escort duty and bridge building until reunited at Dispatch
Station on June 1, when the regiment was employed in providing
for the passage of the troops over the Chickahominy.

It accompanied the army through the Seven Days' battles to
Harrison's landing, where it was again separated, one detachment
being sent to Hampton, Va. When the regimental headquarters was
transferred to Hampton in August, a detachment was left behind at
Harrison's landing, but on Sept. 3 the regiment was reunited at
Washington.

Four companies were detached on Sept 12 and ordered to Harper's
Ferry, where they were engaged in constructing pontoons and later
returned in charge of two of the pontoons to Washington, leaving
a part of the detachment behind. Another detachment was sent to
the vicinity of Fredericksburg with these boats, and the
headquarters of the regiment were transferred to Acquia creek,
leaving one company at Washington.

Great assistance was rendered by the 50th in laying the bridges
before the battle of Fredericksburg, when they were under
continuous fire from the enemy's sharpshooters. Until July 17,
1862, the 50th was enrolled on the state records as an infantry
regiment, but an act of Congress of that date accepted it as a
regiment of the volunteer engineer corps, of the same rank as the
regular army engineer corps.

After passing the winter in the neighborhood of Fredericksburg,
the regiment joined in the Chancellorsville campaign, where it
aided effectively in conveying the army across the river and was
highly praised by Gen. Benham. At Deep run in June the 50th
suffered the loss of 11 in killed, wounded and missing, while
engaged in laying a bridge.

Cos. A, C, F, G, H and K remained in the field during the summer
of 1863 and the others were stationed in Washington. In Dec.,
1863, about three fourths of the regiment reenlisted and received
their veteran furlough. At the opening of the Wilderness
campaign in May, 1864, the 50th was again divided, one detachment
assigned to the 2nd, one to the 6th, and one to the 5th corps,
one company remaining in Washington.

In the winter of 1863-64 two new companies were added to the
regiment and the ranks filled with new recruits. During the
operations of the Army of the Potomac in May and June, 1864, the
main work of the regiment was that of laying bridges at various
points notably one 2,010 feet long, across the James.

At Petersburg the regiment was in demand at all points for work
of construction and repair on the fortifications, and it also
assisted in destroying railroads. During its long service the
men became very proficient in engineering and through its
steadiness under fire is said to have lost during the last year
of its service no bridge material of any kind.

The original members not reenlisted were mustered out at New York
in Sept., 1864, and after participation in the grand review at
Washington, the veteran organization was there mustered out on
June 13-14, 1865. The loss of the regiment by death from wounds
was 17 and by death from disease and other causes 214.

Source: The Union Army, Vol. 2, p. 86

New York
FIFTIETH REGIMENT OF ENGINEERS (VETERAN).
Stuart's Engineers; Independent Engineers; Sappers, Miners and
Pontoniers. (Three Years)

Colonel C. B. Stuart received, July 26, 1861, authority to
recruit a regiment of infantry, which he organized at Elmira,
and which was designated September 20, 1861, the 50th Regiment
of Infantry. The companies were mustered in the service of the
United States for three years at Elmira, A and D September 18;
B August 16, C and F September 17; E August 29; G and H
September 16; I August 26, and K September 30, 1861. October
22, 1861, the regiment was converted into and designated the
Fiftieth, Regiment of Engineers. Two new companies, L and M,
mustered in the United States service for three years in
December, 1863, and January and February, 1864, joined the
regiment in December, 1863, and February, 1864, respectively.
Quite a number of men enlisted for this regiment in 1864 were
assigned to the 15th N. Y. Volunteer Engineers. At the
expiration of its term of service the men entitled thereto were
discharged and the regiment continued in service.

The companies were recruited principally: A at Addison,
Bath, Lodi, Painted Post and Savona; B at Auburn, Elmira,
Geneva, Syracuse, Waterloo, and Honesdale, Pa.; C at Chemung,
Elmira, Rome and Union; D at Elmira, Fulton, Geneva,
Ogdensburgh, Oswego, Syracuse and Watkins; E at Buffalo,
Elmira, Maine, Niagara Falls, North Hector, Penn Yan and Rome;
F at Geneva, Elmira, Oswego, Potsdam and Union, and at
Scranton, Honesdale, Mt.
Summary of letter from Asa Rosenbarger (Harrison County Indiana, 1796-1875) to his father Rudolph in Virginia

I have now seen and photographed the letter for any cousins who may be interested. I'm not sure of the copyright laws on such things, so for now I will summarize it. If you'd like to read the full text, feel free to send me an e-mail (listed on my profile).

To Rudolph Rosenbarger, Strasburg, Shenandoah County, VA

Harrison County, Indiana
August 22nd, 1835

*Asa says that his reply to his father Rudolph is late in coming because he was expecting a visit from Mr. Goghenour (perhaps Isaac Kochenour or his father?)

*The family's health is good, except for Anthony, who has "chills and fevers" (note: Anthony died in October 1836) and Asa himself who has been sick since the last letter he sent his father.

*Asa's brother Paul has built a stone house (in Virginia); Asa comments that there was plenty of stone available in the area.

*Asa suggests that Joseph Brubeck come (to Depauw?) to be the town blacksmith.

*The Rosenbarger family has good access to fruit, and Asa is planning to make apple cider.

*Asa has heard that his brother Abraham has talked of visiting him; he wishes that Abraham would just do it rather than talk about it.

*Asa's crops: He harvested 500-600 dozens of wheat, 150 of rye, and 300-400 of oats; and is growing 40 acres of corn. Wheat is going for $1/bushel in the area, and rye for 37-50 cents.

*Asa and Rachel's son David was born May 4th.

*Asa reminds his mother Barbary (Hammon) that she had promised to visit them 5 years after they left Virginia; the 5 years are up and he hopes she will come through on her promise.

*He thanks his parents for the "paternal exhortation" they gave in the last letter--to set a good, pious example for their children, and to "train them up in the should go, so that when they grew old they might not depart from it," etc.

*Asa hopes he can please his parents in this regard, and that Rudolph and Barbary will remember Asa and Rachel with love; and that Asa may receive Rudolph's blessing.

The letter is signed:
Your affectionate son and daughter
Asa Rosenbarger
Rachel Rosenbarger

To Rudolph & Barbary Rosenbarger

Letter from Erasmus Rosenbarger (1796-1875) to his father Rudolph?

I am a descendant of Erasmus "Asa" Rosenbarger (1796-1875) through his daughter Catharine--Erasmus, Rudolph, Erasmus, Johann Christoffel, etc. I read that a college professor named Francis Coleman Rosenberger wrote some books about the family back in the 1950s, but they were all private printings and the only way I can find to get them is to go to the University of Virginia library.

One of the books was "Word from the West: a letter to Rudolph Rosenberger in Virginia from his son in Indiana, 1835."

The son here being my gggg-grandfather Erasmus "Asa" Rosenbarger of Harrison County, IN (1796-1875) who married Rachel Pitman.

Has anyone seen the letter in question? I'd love to read it but I can't see paying the U of VA $50+ to send me photo copies.

Thanks in advance!

Karen, you mentioned a John Rosenberger who I have been looking for for years. This is not a name common among the family. As for their nationality,I believe they were Jewish and German. I've always been told stories of the Hill of Roses which is where the very wealthy lived in Germany. One of my grandparents came from Danzig, which is where the Hill of Roses is reported to be. My grandmother wasfirst generation German,Dollos was their family name and that's the religion my grandfather adopted.I have found a Benjamin Rosenberger who was one of the Bucktails who fought in the Revolutionary War,I would like to tye them together.

Looking for info on the parents of Margaret Myers. According to The Oberholtzer Book by Barbara Ford, she was born Oct, 1781, married c1805 to Tillman Rosenberger (c1775-Feb., 1814), died 25 Apr. 1875 and is buried at Alverton, Westmoreland Co., PA. I have conflicting info on her father's name--possibly either Christian or Samuel. Also, she may have had a sister Elizabeth who married Abraham Stauffer, Jr. and/or a sister Mary who married Daniel Dillinger.

I don't know how much each of you are sharing so I will let you know as well. The information I received on my family, Hillgardner is incorrect. Mary Rosenberger was not married to my gr.gr. grandfather John Hillgardner. He married Mary Reiber. Mary Rosenberger married John R. Hillgardner who was cousin to my grandfather. If you check the 1881 Census you can see the names. I have a photo of my John H. and Mary with their names on the back that my gr.grandfather gave to my grandmother who gave it to me. As well, I have their marriage info and death notices (white cardboard with a black band around the outside) and pictures of their monuments. You can e-mail me if you want. John Hillgardner and Mary Reiber were both born in Strassburg, Ontario, Canada and married there. Grandpa as born their as well as his 6 siblings. carolekavelman@yahoo.com

I requested some information on Hillgardner and when I received it it said Mary Rosenberger was married to John Hillgardner and what children she had. This is incorrect. She was married to John R. Hillgardner. If you check the 1881 Census you will see the error. John R. was cousin to John Hillgardner who married Marie (Mary) Reiber. I have pictures of John and Mary from their son Edward, my gr-grandfather Edward Hillgardner. Also, I have their death notices and pictures of their monuments. You can e-mail me if you want to. carolekavelman@yahoo.com I also have pictures of their in New Dundee that John's father and mother Elisabath built in 1850.

Tracing Harold Rosenberg/Rosenberger

I am trying to trace the family/friends of Harold Rosenberg/er, stationed in South Wales,UK,1944 during WW11 - originally believed to be from Baltimore, Maryland or Washington area. He is believed KIA. He is my grandfather and my grandmother sadly passed away before I was born, which is why I have no further info to go on. In addition, the records were destroyed in a fire at the military records centre - so I am posting on any site that might possibly help shed some light on this. Apologies if it isn't strictly relevant, however as you can imagine, it is a fascination to think how things might have turned out - had he survived, Rosenberg/er would now be my surname! He proposed to my grandmother just prior to being posted to Normandy. It is a poignant tale. Anyway, many thanks for your time - any info at all would be most gratefully received!
Best wishes
Liz
