Dear Fiona:

I only found out relatively recently I was related to Yossele Rosenblatt. My father's name was Sidney Rosenblatt (ob'm), and his father's name was Yosef Rosenblatt. A cousing of my father's told me that Yoselle Rosenblatt and my grandfather were named after the same relative, and they were first cousins. My grandfather also died relatively young (at 53) of a heart attack. I am named after him. My father's family lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn. I learned from this same cousin that my granfather came from Yvansk (or that is how it sounds) Russia (maybe Ukraine too). He came in his teens. I am forgetting my grandfather's mother's name, but she came from Russia too, after her children were in America and Canada. She was a devoutly religious woman and found there was only one home of her children that she felt comfortable in...Yetta's. Yetta also lived in Brooklyn, though not in Williamsburg. I learned all this from Yetta's daughter Dinah who lives in Baltimore (or did as of several years ago). She would be in her late 80's or possibly early 90's now, and was very hard of hearing back when I spoke with her. If you have any other info, I would love to hear about it. I know there was one sister of my grandfather's who lived in Canada. I think the sister's were Bella (or Baila), Esther, and Yetta...and my granfather Yosef or "Joe' as he came to be known in America.

I am also trying to establish whether I am related to Yossele. My name was Rosenblatt before it was changed. My father was born in Rumania and lived in Vienna until he migrated to Australia in 1939. He always spoke about Yossele as if they were related but I cant establish it to be true. Has anyone got a Family tree for Yossele. My grandfather was Samson Rosenblatt. I MAY BE CLUTCHING AT STRAWS, BUT.......

I am descended from a "Wolf Rosenblatt" -- 5 or 6 generations. Your Wolf and my Wolf may or may not be the same person. The only information I have about my Wolf is that he probably lived around the turn of the century in either Kedainai, Kovna or Vilna, Lithuania. I'm told that his Hebrew name was "Z'ev", Wolf or Volf in yiddish, and eventually anglicanized to William or Bill. There are many documents on Ancestry.com for "Wolf Rosenblatt" that might be relevent to your search. From what country/town did your "Wolf Rosenblatt" emigrate to the US?

Susan,
Your post hit me really strange today. My mother's name is Susan as well and my Grandfather was Henry Rosenblatt (1914). He was married to Rose Rosenblatt (born in 1921) which made me read your post about 4 different times before posting back to you. They only had 2 children so this is where everything is different.

Good luck in finding your ancestors.

10 years later and I haven't found out any specific information prooving the relationship to Cantor Rosenblatt. Hannah Rosenblatt was born abt 1883. She married Yacov Fischman abt 1898. They emigrated to NY in 1907. I think I'll try to find someone who has done the cantor's family tree and see if Hannah fits in their tree as I have had no luck finding additional info on Hannah.
On the Ancestry.com transcription of the 1900 US Federal Census in New York, NY for "A G Rosenblatt" from Russia, immigrated 1899, somebody entered a "yellow triangle" annotation that he also had the name [Harry Rosenthal] in square brackets, and also that he immigrated in 1889. I would like to get in contact with whoever made that annotation because this Harry Rosenthal **may** be my GGF from Kiev, who changed his name and disappeared.
Looking in Canada for the half sister of Gloria Wise.

We believe Gloria's maiden name was "Rosenblatt", but Gloria changed it to "Rosanne" when she moved from New York to California at age 18. We're not sure of much. Gloria was born in New York around 1928 and was raised by a foster family. We believe her sister's name might be,"Roslyn" and their mother's name, "Alice", but we're not sure of that either. We are sure that Gloria's sister is still alive and living in Montreal or another large Canadian city. We also believe we have a rather large Jewish extended family living in the same area in Canada. If any of this information rings a bell we would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you.

Leyb Rosenblatt, sons David, Ber Gabriel, Wolf, Itsik (Itsek) Eliash, and daughter Slove - Lithuania

Leyb Rozenblatt, born about 1822, married Godee or Goldy Minen, born abt 1831. As Leyba ROZENBLYAT, in 1852 on the craftsmen census, he was listed as a baker with 2 women in the family. In 1860, as Leyb ROZINBLYAT, he was a taxpayer, listed in Vilkija, Kaunas province, Russia, now Lithuania. In both these lists his father was David. In 1866 they were town dwellers in Vilkija; Leyb was 36 and his son Movsha Wulf was 10, so he was married at least before 1856 and perhaps by 1852. By 6 May 1870 in Vilkija, he is listed as living in Kaunas as a box taxpayer. In 1874, he is listed as 52 yrs old, with sons Berel Gabriel age 12,Itsek Elya 4, Movsha Vulf 26, Volf 23. By 1890, on the family list, he was listed in Vilkija, but looks like living in Kaunas, Movsha Wulf age 41 is married and has Yakov, and his wife is perhaps Zlata 39. Volf age 39, has children - Hatskel Ezekiil age 19, Ovsey 12, Rocha Pera 5, Sora 4 - his wife could be Zlata; hard to tell whose wife she is by ages as she is 39, the right age for either son. Gabriel Ber is now 28 and his wife probably is Mindel 25, and son David Wulf is 3. Leyb's wife Golda is 59, and son Itsik Eliash is 20. They also had a daughter Slove/Sarah b. abt 1853- 1868, who married a Samuel Segal/Siegel. She emigrated to the US in 1904/5 with 3 of her 5 children; Eli, Ruth and Esther on US census records. They moved right away to Chicopee/Springfield MA area, and are listed as running a dry goods store. Eli married Ray and had Edith N, Goldie M and Ada E. Ruth married Oscar Fine who ran a deli I think and had Harold S and Shirley L. Esther married David Maislen and had Gladys M, Dorothy H - twins, Sidney E, Irving and Edith.
Back in Lithuania, Ber Gabriel dies abt 1905 in the Kaunas area during the revolution. By then he has, besides David Vulf who marries Sonia Schermann and has at least a son Benjamin; a son, name unknown, who later goes by Max Epstein, and a daughter Perel Leah, who marries a ? Khmelevsky. Benjamin Rozen may have been the only survivor of the Holocaust in David Vulf's family; "Max Epstein" married Rose Klompus and moved to the us in 1927 and then Hartford,CT area - both died in 1951, leaving two young sons. Perel Leah and her family may have perished, as well as Ber Gabriel's wife.

My husband was 15 when his parents died and never knew anything about his family, and only recently discovered his family name was Rozenblatt, not Epstein. I have been tracing the family for a few years, and we are about to visit Lithuania to see where they came from, but I am hoping to find more family for him soon, as he has developed mild dementia, and this has been a life long question in his mind. I also want to pass on to his children their heritage, as much as possible. Any leads would be appreciated.
I am related distantly to the Samuel/Rebecca and Wm. H. Rosenblatt you mention from the 1860 census in Rochester. These Rosenblatts are from Bavaria. I have a fairly extensive genealogy of the Rosenblatts on "Family Tree of the Jewish People" on www.jewishgen.org, which you might like to look at. Alternatively, you could give me the names of your Rosenblatt ancestors from the 1800s and I could try to identify them.

Regards
James Alsina

I would suggest checking www.ancestry.com using the last name "Rosenblat" (ie one t). (Our branch used 2 t's.) They have recently added a number of records for Canadian censuses as well as immigration data. Regards -- James

Loking for information on Rosenblatts of Russia/Buffalo/Bronx/Brooklyn

Just started this journey complicated by fact that my paternal grandparents and all but one uncle/aunt predeceased my birth in 1966.

My Grandfather's name was Israel Rosenblatt (born approx 1892) and and came to U.S. via Russia in approx 1915. He married Vera (surname unknown, born approx 1896) who also appears to come from Russia. By 1930 they were living in NY/Bronx area. At this tiem they had six children (Abraham 1915, Bertha 1917, Jacob 1919, Hyman 1923, Millie 1925 and David 1927). I know of at least two other children born after 1930, Uncle Sol (died in the 1970s) and my father, Edward, born approx 1936. My estranged father is the only living child.

HELP! Can anyone peice together even part of this mystery? Almost all of these people died before 1966.

I can be contcated at medmallawyer@hotmail.com

Dear Anne

I was delighted to read your e-mail to Audrey Wyper.

My father was David Ross, grandson of Harry.

My grandfather David Ross had 4 brothers, Harry, Robert, Alec and Joseph and a sister called Rosa. I would be interested to know who was the grandfather of your brother-in law Andrew.

I know exactly where Harry's grave is situated because my grandfather is also buried in the same plot. It is in Craigton Cemetery in Glasgow at the Paisley Road West entrance. It may be quite difficult to find because a large part of the cemetery has been vandalised and some parts are quite overgrown so it would probably be best to ask at the gate to be directed to the plot.

I remember my Dad taking me to see the grave as a child. There was quite a big headstone and I remember my Dad saying something about it being a masonic headstone.

Please get it touch with me if I can assist with any more information.

Sadly my Dad died almost 15 years ago but both his sisters, Phyllis and Margaret are still around and may be able to help with more information.

Best wishes

Margaret (Ross) Brown

Dear Audrey,
My brother in law is Andrew Ross and Samuel Rosenblatz is his great great grandfather. We are trying to trace where in Glasgow we can find the grave of Harry who was married to Catherine Graham. We have a photograph of the grave but do not know its location. If you can help we would be very grateful.Like you we seem to have come to a full stop at Samuel. Andrews cousin Ella from Australia has done a lot of research aand she seems to think that Samuel was born in Riga Latvia about 1847. She has his occupation as a Master Grocer in 1892. I do hope that this reaches you as it is a long time since your letter was put on the site.

Best wishes
Anne

Joseph Rosenblatt was probably the GREATEST cantor in the 20th Century. He was a movie star too.
You can order his recordings from tara publishing.com or www.jewishmusic.com.
You will LOVE to hear him. The man quitesimply had a divine voice, just like my relative, cantor Joseph Schmidt. It's just that Yoessl lived long enough to make an enormous recorded body of work.

I now have info on a couple of branches of my dating back 10000 ce. I only found these because I researched various spellings of different names. I made sure they coincided with all of the info I had. We've even gone as far as having some DNA tests done. You'd be suprized!!!
This is very curious. I have been researching my roots; and, because of name changes, I keep running into obstacles. I have a great-uncle Benjamin Abramovitz (sometimes spelled differently), whose sister married my other great-uncle Jacob Elias Poritzky, whose mother (my great-great-grandmother) was Jennie Rosenbaum. Her father, "Aaron Rosenbaum," was a cantor. Is it possible that Rosenbaum may be the same name as "Rosenblatt?" My great-uncle was born in Lomza, Poland in 1876. Do you see any connection?

Rabbi Rosenblatt conducted my Bat Mitzvah at the old synagogue which was then located on Garrison Blvd in Balto (now on Old Court Road, right in back of my current home). The synagogue has a wonderful historian (whose name escapes me now...). You can contact BT at 410-486-1900.

I do believe they can and will assist you in your family search.
All the best,
Sue Tapper
