Hi.
Although i have several Johns in my family tree, I cannot find your's. However I can tell you what my family know about our surname...
The Vikings conquered the Orkney Isles, amongst other areas of northern Scotland; then set their sights on Europe and crossed the English Channel to France.
King Charles of France did not want to relinquish his throne, so he made a deal with the invaders. He would give them part of France to be included in their Viking Empire, if the rest of France was left alone. The area given up was what we now know as Normandy - a word meaning the Land of the North Men. What we grew to call Normans, were in fact Vikings. The town of Rosay became a huge Viking fort in their new kingdom.
When the most famous of their decendants, William the Conquerer decided to invade England, amongst those warriors who supported him, were ones from Rosay. After England, William's armies moved into other areas of what we now call the UK.
Surnames did not exist as such here, especially amongst the peasant class, but William enforced them, to keep records for taxes, so surnames had to be found and adopted. Rosay became the surname of those Scots who had become the subjects of the Norman/Vikings who had moved north into Fife. The name became Gaelic -Rosei and Rossie, then settling as Rosie; Rosies moved further north and settled in Caithness and the Orkneys.
The name also appears with different spellings in some other parts of Europe as presumably some of the other soldiers from Rosay conquered other areas, eg I have seen Rossi in Italy and Rossiere in France.

Regards
Sue Rosie

Jean,

Please re-do your message starting off like other researchers on this board have done. It is unhelpful to tag your query on to another message that is unconnected - it will not be viewed by other researchers so is an utter waste. I'm replying only because you replied to my post. Please study other topics on this board particularly the opening message in each and you should get the hang of it before you try again.

Thanks.

Good Luck,

James.
Hi
I am looking for the family of Jean Rosie (circa 1762) who married Oman Duncan. I know she had two brothers Malcolm and John, as Malcolm aged 68 and John's widow were both living with Oman and Jean in the 1821 census. Any info much appreciated. Regards Linda

I am not sure if you meant me to receive this information and whether it was meant to be rude but it seemed quite offhand. My ggg aunt married an Italian prisoner of war - he was not Orcadian - nor did he become an orcadian if that answers your question if it was one.

A new Mailing List has been set up for ROSIE.

Briefly,
You can subscribe to this list in mail mode by sending a message to

ROSIE-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word

subscribe

and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command instead to

ROSIE-D-request@rootsweb.com.

To unsubscribe, send the command "unsubscribe" to ROSIE-L-request@rootsweb.com
(if in mail mode) or
ROSIE-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.)
To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if you want messages to stop, simply unsubscribe.

To post to both ROSIE-L and ROSIE-D, messages should be sent to
ROSIE-L@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear both places.

Thanks,
James/

My Rosie family are Walter Rosie and his wife Margaret Warse. They married in Canisbay in 1788. I don't know who Walter's parents were, and as far as I know they did not have a child called Mary, but you never know.

Do you know anything else about your Mary Rosie?

Her name was Helen Scott and she came from the Dunnett family who had a farm there. One of the Dunnett sisters married an Italian prisoner of war and his name was Rosie and that is all I know at this stage. My cousin is named after her great grandmother Helen. could there be a connection. If you have any info at all I would be most grateful.

Hi I am currently starting an investigation into my family and I know very little except that my great grandmother was born in St. Margaret's Hope in south Ronaldsay. There were sisters all Dunnetts and they had a farm there. One of the daughters married an Italian prisoner of war by the name of Rosie. It is in the book of records and that is all I know. I would be most grateful to hear of any info you have uncovered. Some research I did said that the Rosie's moved around from South Ronaldsay in Orkney to Caithness so there could be a connection.

My gr.gr. grandmother was Marjory Rosie who married Alexander Steven. Her Father was John Rosie born 1781.(Not the son of John Rosie and Janet Williamson). There were 2 John Rosie s born that year. I did make the mistake of thinking they were the parents a couple of years ago when I could only find one on the IGI. Ian Aitchison set me straight. My John is not listed in IGI.

I wish
to find out more about the original John Rosie and Janet
Williamson please. Did the name Rosie come from the Isle of Rousay in the Orkneys?
Not a lot definite; I have deduced out a few things - she must have been born before 1806 as she married in 1822 (would make her 16 when married) and the children were born between 1824 and 1832 so she was likely to be born after 1788 (that would make her 44 when the last child was born) so birth between 1788 and 1808 which is a fairly big range of years. Family story has her being a bit younger than Alexander (he was born 1777); also has her being a servant at one of the houses in Thurso area. Not too sure where Canisbay is but your marriage date is in the right sort of area...
