I would suggest you continue with Ancestry for a while longer. Start your husband's family tree, starting with him and add all the information you have on his family. By having a tree you will get Ancestry Family Hints, they connect you with people that have the same family names and records. These Family Hints will give you names of brother and sisters of your ancestors and from there you can find their families, it will also give you contact information on those hints. If you are lucky they will answer your emails. You will also get Historical Hints such as census records. Make sure you look at the original census records and do searches on each individual in Ancestry.com the LDS website FamilySearch.org and Google. This process will give you a good start on what you need and much more then just a search on a name without it being in a tree. Good luck....Karen

Thanks for your reply. I joined Ancestry.com in an effort to find some long lost relatives, as my husband's grandfather left mineral rights to his seven children. Now that all of that generation is gone, I am trying to track down the grandchildren, as there is an offer to lease the property for oil exploration. As you can imagine, trying to track down second, and sometimes third generations of seven family members is not that easy. I do not plan on staying on ancestry.com past the 14 day free period. I do not do genealogy, so forgive me if I don't state the following correctly.

My husband's great-great-great grandfather was John Van Leuven Sr 1754-1847, (married Mary Ann Pulver) GG GF was John Van Leuven VL Jr 1802-1889 (married Fannie Draper), G GF was William Harrison VL (1828-1912) (m Amy Gard), GF William Michael VL (1857-1934) (m Emily Chambers), father William Wayne VL (1897-1986)(m Laurene Armstrong).

So, it appears my husband shares a common lineage with you, from John Van Leuven Sr.

Laura van Leuven

I am sorry I do not have any information on Myrtle Van Leuven.

On my husband's father side, he is the 2nd great grandson of Hannah Van Leuven, daughter of Fredrick who came to California in 1851. Frederick is the son of John R. Van Leuven 1774-1847.

On his mother side he is the great grandson of Ida May Van Leuven daughter of John Asher Van Leuven, son of Benjamin, who also settled San Bernardino in 1851, he was a brother to the above mentioned Fredrick.

Karen

Your post referred to Audrey's book, of which we have a copy. I have been trying to find any descendants of Myrtle Van Leuven Bailey/ Wright Bailey and Mabel Van Leuven Dunlap/ Frank Dunlap. Are you somewhere in those lineages? Thanks, Laura

Re: Looking for info on Ethel M Roswell married Truman Badgerow

I believe you and I have written to one another before but when I read your most recent e-mail I got thinking.

I have a aunt named Ethel M. Roswell born abt 1917. She was one of seven children born to Frederick & Clara M. Roswell.

Her siblings were: Fred Jr. B:1912, Charlotte, B:1919, Dorothy B: 1920, Laura B; B:1926, Lester Ernest B: 1928 and my father Robert B: 1923.

My father was not close to his sisters and only kept in touch with my Uncle Ernie {Lester}. Something about the girls using money he sent home during the war to party while he was overseas. I don't know the true story only what I was told and heard growing up. The only aunt and uncle that I ever remember meeting was Uncle Al and Aunt Charlotte and I recall a cousin named Kenny who like myself served in Vietnam.

Dad spoke very little of his family and I know he had very bitter feelings towards his mother. Why I don't fully know, but my mom convinced him to attend her funeral. He got really upset at the funeral because some of the other family members were smoking marijuana and that pissed him off.

I know that in 1930 and later years that the family lived in Asbury Park, Monmouth County, N.J. My Dad was born in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

My father Robert, who his family called Bobby had worked as a boy in a local bakery, delivered the Asbury Park Press and also cut wood with his father.

I am researching Pop Pop Frederick Roswell and trying to trace his side of the family. Dad spoke very little of his dad and I believe it was due to his being possibly a heavy drinker and once the depression hit he lost everything and I think they also became distant.

I know that Pop Pop Frederick, Uncle Freddie and Grandmom Clara are all buried in Mount Prospect Cemetery in Neptune City,New Jersey.

Some other tips that may help.

Uncle Freddie was wheel chair bound his whole life due to polio and he had no formal education. He died in 1975.

Grandmom Clara M. {Bickens}, Roswell died in July 1978 I believe in the Atlantic Highlands, and Pop Pop Frederick Roswell died in 1949.

I know some of the family moved west to either Indiana or perhaps Mich.

The only sibling that may be alive is Aunt Laura who I met sometime in the mid to late 90's for the very first time. I also know she had a health problem because she always had to have her food pureed in order to get it down.

My father died in April 2008 just before his 85th birthday. His brother Lester E died in 2007.

My mother was Joan Roswell who passed in June 2001.

If this is off any help please let me know.

Oh, one thing that I'm researching has to do with my Pop Pop Frederick Roswell being an inmate in the Monroe Township, New Jersey, Middlesex County, State Home for boys at the age of 18 and listed in the 1900 United States Census.

He had seven children one of them being my father Robert Roswell.

He married Clara May Bickens but I do not know what date.
Charles,

Here is the original information, on the Roswell's of Hudson, Ohio I found.

I have more info, if you would like. Email me directly at aadrianson@aol.com.

Alan

Audrey Van Leuven's account ,(Van Leuven family), shows Ambrose and Elizabeth (Van Leuven) Roswell's children:
1. Gilbert Roswell, (my gr-gr-gr grandfather), blacksmith, living in Russell Township, Geauga, Ohio, born about 1823, Loughborough, Canada, married about 1846, Ohio, to Polly ___ who was born about 1827, New York, children Maryette, born 1847, Ohio, and Laura, born 1849, Ohio.
2. Melissa Roswell, born about 1825, Loughborough, Canada, died abt 1857 (?), Ohio, married 5 Feb 1846, Lake Co., Ohio, Lewis McGoon, children Lucy, born 1847, Ohio, Henry, born 1848, Ohio, Martha E., born 1851, Ohio, and Laura, born 1855, Ohio. (note by Audrey: "We are doing some guesswork here. And we presume that Melissa had died before the 1860 census was taken as Lucy and Martha were living with Betsy & Ambrose; Laura was living with a Robert Corp family, only 3 households away. In 1850 census Henry was living with Betsy and Ambrose.)
3. Roney Roswell, (male) born abt 1830, Loughborough, Canada, (he is shown in the 1850 census, Hudson, Twp, Summit, Ohio, as a laborer, 20 years old, living in the household of Moses Thompson.)
4. Brigham Roswell, born about 1833, Loughborough.
5. Ambrose Roswell, Jr., born about 1836, Loughborough (Ambrose shows on the 1860 census, Hudson Twp, Summit, Ohio, as a farm laborer, 23 years old, living in the household with his parents.)
6. Girl, born abt 1839 (shows on 1840 census for Summit Co, Ohio. She must have died as Anna mentions only the other five children in the 1852 letter.)
Thanks again Alan,

That looks like a possiblity of being the mother of Charles Roswell also. More research to be done. This is mere speculation right now since I have only pieces of information leading me to this theory. It makes the most sense to me right now, but something could prove it to all be wrong.

Chuck

Charles,

I'm not sure, about that theroy, but it needs more research.

One other thing I forgot to mention, was that Albert bought a lot in Fairview Cemetery in Boston Heights, Summit, Ohio and a Mrs. A. Roswell is buried there on 25 Aug 1899. Haven't found anything else about her.

Alan

Thanks Alan,

Is it possible that Mary was Albert's wife that was living with the Snyders in 1900? That would make sense. Charles Roswell could have named his daughter, Mary (my grandmother) after her. I guess it could be his aunt, but it makes more sense that it was his mother.
Chuck

Charles,

I'm not sure how your Charles is connected, but I have researched this family, and this information should help clear up a few things.

Ambrose and Elizabeth Roswell Sr. where the parents of Ambrose Jr.

Ambrose Roswell Jr. married Elizabeth L. Miller on 20 Oct 1858 and they were listed with his parents in 1860. Elizabeth was probably the domestic at the bottom of the household on the census listing. And looks like she was also listed with her parents John and Elizabeth Miller in Northfield, Summit, Ohio. He married second Mary Durkin on 17 Aug 1864 in Summit County.

Albert Roswell looks to be the son of Ambrose Jr. and Elizabeth Miller, and I did not find him in the 1860 census either. Like you mentioned he was listed with his grandparents in 1870 and S. A. Chamberlin in 1880. He and probably a sister Mary Roswell are listed in Hudson, Summit, Ohio in 1900 with the Snyder? family on the same page as his parents Mary (head) and Ambrose. The 1900 census has him born October 1859 and he died 2 Dec 1918 in Akron, Summit, Ohio.

Alan

What happened to Charles Roswell?

Mary Blanche Roswell(born 25 Mar 1915)was my grandmother. She married Paul Sabo(born 1906 in Hungary) about 1930 in Conneaut, Ohio. They had four boys...Paul, Gaylord, Charles(my father) and George. My father is Charles Roswell Sabo(born 20 May 1937) named after his grandfather Charles Roswell (born abt 1876 in Ohio) who was Mary Roswell's father. Mary Roswell's mothers name was Jennie McManus(born 1880 in Sugar Grove, PA). Jennie McManus's parents were John McManus and Mary A. Good.
Mary Roswell left my Grandfather Paul Sabo and their 4 boys when the boys were quite young. From what I understand, Grandpa Paul was a hard man to live with. I never got t meet My Grandma Mary, but I understand that she married several times and has many other children and grandchildren. I have been in contact with Tom and Kelly Waid this year and we have exchanged information with one another.
We all have been very puzzled on what happened to my Great Grandfather Charles Roswell. How, where and when did he die. We also have no idea who his parents or siblings were. All we know is, from the 1910 and 1920 US Census, that he is born in Ohio in 1876.
Can anyone help me with finding out this missing information?

Origin of the name Roswell/Roswill ???

Does anyone know the origin of the name Roswell/Roswill?

I have been working on my Robert B. Ames + Elizabeth Mosher/Mosier family.
They had a son named Roswell Ames b 1802. This name was repeated within several descendant families. Spelling varies as Roswell/Roswill/Rosel/Rozel.

I imagine it was a family surname - a mother or grandmother's maiden name.

There seem to be quite a number of men with this as their given name, but I am not seeing connections to anyone with Roswell as a surname.

The origin of my GGGG-GParent's is still unknown and we are trying to track down any leads.
They were in Ontario Co, NY on the 1810 census.
Robert Barkley/Barclay Ames was b abt 1768, so the Roswell would have been 1-2 generations prior.

If you have any knowledge of a family connection - please post or contact me.

I would like any info on the origin of this name and when + where people with this surname came to the US.

Thank you,
Sandi
steeler271@aol.com

Cathie-
Thank you for your response.
My ancestors all appear to be from the New England area.

The name Roswell/Roswill/Rosel/Rozel as a given name is known to me as occurring in 1802.
If it was a surname from a prior generation, it would have been in the 1700s.

I believe that it was a prior generation because I found a Roswell Ames in an index in 1800 in NY. Possibly an uncle or father.

I would imagine that with a name like Robert Barclay/Barkley Ames, the family would be British.

If I could find the early immigrants with this surname, I may be able to find my GGGG-GF's ancestry.

I will look at the name Rouswell.
(My understanding is that there was no standardized spelling of names until Social Security.
Many people spelled their own name differently, the above Robert Ames did in his Will - he spelled Barclay, 3 different ways.)

Thank you for your time and information.
I appreciate it.
Sandi
.

Re: Origin of the name Roswell/Roswill ???

Try looking for Rouswell. I always thought my g grandmothers family was Roswell, but discovered about a year ago that Rouswell is the correct spelling. You will occasionally find it spelled Roswell in the census, but the correct spelling is probably Rouswell. My personal belief is that often in pioneer days, no one in the household could read and write and therefore the spelling was left up to the census taker. Where did your family live? My branch of Rouswells lived in Texas. I only recently started collecting Rouswell data, but I would share what I have if you are interested.
Cathie
mailto: catjwilson@aol.com
