My Great great grandmother's maiden name was Rothwell (Susan). She married by great, great grandfather John McCutcheon and lived in Hilltown (near Wexford). As often happens, my great-grandfather (also a John) named his daughter for his mother (Susan Rothwell). I was able to find the family farm when I visited Ireland four years ago, but no gravestones or permanent records. The family was Anglican. Let me know anything that you might find. Thank you so much.

Hello!

Can't provide any info on Andrew/Mary, but John Edmund Rothwell and Eliza (Bell) are my great grandparents. Their youngest, my mother's mother, was Ida Pearl Craine Rothwell, but she was always called Pearl. She married Charles J. Onley, and they had 5 children: Olga Elaine-called Elaine, Edward(who died as a young child, my mom Mary Ruth--always Ruth, Margaret Pearl, and Charles.

Hi Lori,
Yours is an old post, but I've been in touch with Bill Rothwell in Houston, and he seems to have gotten good information. John and Eliza Rothwell are also my great-grandparents--Pearl Rothwell Onley was my mother's mother.

So--how are we related? I'm sporadic in doing these searches, but am trying!

Hi,
I replied to you separately by e-mail. Let me know if you did not get, but in summary, we are second cousins. Since writing this original note, I have made quite good progress, working with another new found second cousin based out of Calgary and fourth cousin base out of New Zealand, in fleshing out much of our family tree. Turns out our branch of the Rothwells began as Radwells in Ireland changed their names to Rothwell then split into potentially three groups: One group (ours) moving to Canada (and my part on to the US), one part to New Zealand and presumably one part remaining in Ireland (although we have not focused much on any of those potentially remaining in the Wexford region of Ireland). I suppose their is a fair probability that the ancestry line moves back to England, but this is purely speculative at this time.
I would be most interested in hearing more about the decedents of your grandmother Ida Pearl Craine Rothwell Onley. Also I am very curious if you have any insights into the choice of "Craine" in her middle name.
Thank you!

Bill Rothwell

Edmund became a US citizen in 1888.

Do you live in Little Falls? My Grandmother died in 1974 and my Grandfather who is the Rothwell died in 1976 or 1977, (he was missing for a long time and we got the word of his death by phone), I was not into the family history till way later.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for replying to my Rothwell request. I have been to the cemetery at the head of Dog Trot and found Solomon's grave. Ebenezer I believe was buried on the hill on the right before you got to the the end of the road. If I remember right both Solomon and Ebeneze now have stones. I help find so many graves I forget sometimes which ones have been marked.

Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,
I just found this website and noticed your post. Solomon, born 1830, was my gg-grandfather. Don't know the dates of death but he & Hannah, born 1826, are buried in a small un-tended cemetery at the top of Dogtrot Road off Route 460 in Menifee County. Most people in the county don't even know there is a cemetery among all the trees and shrubs. The graves have always been marked with slabs of river rock. It would be wonderful to have his grave marked with a real headstone. Unfortunately the only information I have on Ebenezer is he married Patsy Ann Stine in 1865 and they had one son, John born 1878.

Does anyone have a Sarah Frances Rothwell on their tree? She married Andrew Hackney around 1880 in Menifee and she is believed to have died around 1927. I want to find where she and her husband are buried. I don't know who her parents were.

Thank you very much for the response. The info that I have thus far is that when Ace (my gt grandfather) was 7 years old he was on the 1880 US Federal Census living in Menifee, KY.

At some point years later, after his son Edward was born, Ace, Mary, and their five offspring made their way to Paint Creek,(between Holly Grove and Gallagher) WV and Ace worked as a plumber on the railway at the railroad scaleyards. I know exactly where they lived.

I have that Ace & Mary had the following children - Ellen Rothwell b. 1901, Nancy 'Nannie" (Sparks) Rothwell b. 1903, Edward Grant Rothwell b. 03/07/1905 {my grandfather} in Bath Co. Ky, John McClellan Rothwell b. 10/11/1907 d. 09/06/1966, & Mildred Rothwell b. 1913.

I have a photo showing Ace and his son Edward taken in 1927 at the railroad scaleyards in WV. That would put Ace at 56 years of age and Edward at 22 years of age.

I also have a photo of Ace and his wife Mary Belle (Williamson) Rothwell - date unknown holding a baby boy. I have a photo taken recently of Ace and Mary's gravestone along with their dates [Ace b. 1871 d. 1967] [Mary b. 1877 d. 1963]. The spelling on the gravestone was Ace. Acy may have been a nickname - I am really not sure. The graveyard is small and located along Paint Creek in Holly Grove, WV. There is also a small headstone there with Sue Carol Rothwell on it.

Edward, my grandfather, did name my father William Tracy Rothwell and my dad's older brother Acey Charles Rothwell. I am William Tracy Rothwell II.

Let me know if you would like a copy of any of the Pictures.

Now that I know that Ebenezer "Eb" was my gt. gt. grandfather, do you have any information on him or anything before him?

As for the Indian blood in my Rothwell family, I am not sure. I could make a guess by looking at the picture of Ace and Edward on the railroad scaleyard and the picture of Ace and Mary and say no. As I said, that is only a guess. My father has no recollection of that.

I will keep digging to try to find that out. Please contact me at rothwell_t@gmail.com and we could exchange telephone numbers.

William Tracy Rothwell II.

Thank you soooo much!!

Eb Rothwell had a son named Acy and we show born in 1873. We do belive he moved to WV. Eb's children were Joseph 1868, Nute 1869, Bird 1871, Emma 1873 (my gt grandmother) Acy 1873, Andy 1875, and John 1878. Some believe that Acy and Emma may have been twins.Eb was married to Patsy Alice Stone(some show Stine.) Emma's picture is in the ancestry photo data base. Do you know if there was any indian blood in your gt. grandfathers family? We are trying to confirm this. Let me know if I can be of further assist.

We are looking for my mother in law's grandfather, Alfred Rothwell, who came to America, landing in New york in 1901. He was naturalised in 1906 in Portland Maine. This is the last documentation we can find for him.
Later in 1901 his wife, Ellen (sometimes Nellie) and new born son (Arthur) came to America and landed in Boston. Some time later his wife and son came back to Bolton England but he stayed in America. He could have used Fred or Fredrick his name.
He may not have refered to his English family but he sent cards and presents to his son early in the 1900's.
Any information would be appreciated.

I am researching my family who emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand in 1864. My great grandfather was Thomas Rothwell the son on Benjamin Radwell. His mother was Patience Merryman and his parents married in 1815. Thomas married Eleanor Ball in 1857 in Dublin and they had five children when they emigrated to NZ.

We have in our possession various photos sent to my great grandparents. One photo of Bella Rothwell has on the back of it Walkerton, Ontario. There is also a photo of Mr and Mrs James Rothwell. There must be a link between a Rothwell family in Canada and the one in NZ for photos to have been sent. Would be grateful for any information.

Glenys

Probably a wise to remove the generations prior to Claiborne but you never know. I am about to make further enquiries along diferent lines to see if i can link Thomas and Elizabeth to Claiborne.
As a matter of interest Thomas and Elizabeth certainly had 5 children here in the UK who were;
Richard b 1730. Peter b 1717. John b 1718 Ann b 1720 and Robert b 1725.
If I do discover anything more on this possible UK/USA connection I will advise you.In the meantime in case you and any other Rothwell family members are interested i have set up a Rothwell Family History Facebook page.
I have seen that but I've never seen any evidence of his parents or even when he arrived. The name Thomas persists in his line however.

One story claims this Thomas and Elizabeth [m. 1716] had sons Thomas [DOB unknown], Peter b. 1717, Sara b. 1730, Claiborne b. 1740. That is a big stretch but it also could be there were multiple wives and missing children. I have one proven line with only two known children 20 years apart.

This story also indicates the father of Thomas is Peter and the mother is Mary Haywood. It goes on from there. I have wondered if someone made a convenient "fit."

Rothwell family.
I have recently returned to researching my Rothwell family after a 3 years break. I have read on the web that it is claimed Claiborne was the son of Thomas Rothwell b; 1687 in Bolton Le Moors and his wife Elizabeth Young. I am descended from Thomas and elizabeth. I have posted several messages over last few days to the people that show Claiborne's parents as thomas and Elizabeth to enquire if there is any evidence to supprt this claim but to date have heard nothing
As part of the UK Rothwell family and "would be" relatives to Claiborne it would be amazing if the link were proven but until then we can only speculate.
In anticipation.
Stewart Rothwell

Rothwell was born in Athlone, Ireland to James and Elizabeth and was the oldest of their seven children. He trained to become a painter at the Dublin Society's school from 1814 until 1820 and won a silver medal for his work. At the age of 24, he was made a member of the newly established Royal Hibernian Academy and exhibited portraits there from 1826 to 1829. He subsequently moved to London and worked as a studio assistant to Thomas Lawrence,[1]. When Lawrence died in 1830, Rothwell completed many of his unfinished works and was poised to become the next foremost portrait painter in Britain and Ireland.[1] According to Leoneé Ormond's biographical article in the Grove Dictionary of Art, Rothwell "was at the height of his powers from 1829 to 1831"; he "was much influenced by Lawrence, but he lacked the incisiveness and flair of his master".[1] From 1831 to 1834, Rothwell toured Italy to study Italian art so that he could paint history paintings. When he returned to London, his popularity had evaporated.[2] Rothwell lived and exhibited works in Ireland, the United States, London, and Italy, but he never again achieved the same level of popularity he had reached in the late 1820s.[2]

In 1842 Rothwell married Rosa Marshall; the couple had several children.

In 1868, Rothwell contracted a fever while working in Rome and died. Joseph Severn, who painted a portrait of the Romantic poet John Keats, arranged for Rothwell's funeral and tomb in the Protestant Cemetery, Rome.[
Dear all,

Does anyone out there have any information on the lineage of Richard Rothwell (1800-1868)the painter? There is a biography of him in the Dictionary of National Biography. Is he by any chance related to the Rothwells of Rockfield?

Edward Kendall

I am researching the Rothwell family in New Zealand. My great grandparents Thomas and Eleanor (Ellen) nee Ball and their five children emigrated to NZ in 1864. Thomas was born in 1818 and was the son of Benjamin Radwell and Patience Merryman. He had a brother Edward born in 1816. My grandfather told my aunt that a brother had come to the South Island of NZ before going to Canada. Another family member thinks his name was John. Any help would be appreciated.
Glenys
