      <description>There are many books and publications that list all known settlers of Jamestown.  I just checked &lt;a href="http://historicjamestowne.org/biographies/list.php" target="_blank"&gt;http://historicjamestowne.org/biographies/list.php&lt;/a&gt; and do not see any listing for Ezekiah Wroughton but this list only covers the first 18 years.  There are many spellings for Roughton and the closest I saw was Thomas Wotton, who was a surgeon I believe.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I have a good many Roughton's in my data base.  Mostly in NC.  I descend from John Roughton who migrated from Elizabeth City Co., VA to Tyrrell Co., NC in 1742.  John was the son of Richard Roughton who was b. ca. 1676.  I have not traced him further back.  Unfortunately, I do not have any of the Roughton's you mentioned.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;You might want to try books such as Cavaliers and Pioneers; also the William and Mary Quarterly. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Good luck.</description>

      <description>yah your right, um, well for starters orvil was born in 1918 around bentonville ark.  his father was John H Roughton born in 1886 at benton Ark.  his father was Thomas R Roughton. he was born in 1844 at coffee, TN.  his father was James Harrison Roughton born 1818 also in coffee TN.  his father was James Henry Roughton 1787 out of NC.  his father was Josiah L Roughton also from NC.  i can keep going back to when they came over from england, but from what ive researched and i cant verify with paperwork, is that they were here before the the mayflower.  the first Roughton to be here from what i have seen was Ezekiah Wroughton.  he supposedly died in jamestown in 1630.  how can i verify all this?</description>

She lived in Corsicana, Texas and married Lynne Wortham, the editor of the local Corsicana Daily Sun. She was kinda awesome...       <description>I believe Sarah O'Sheal was the daughter of Daniel O'Sheal and his wife, Sarah Walker O'Sheal.&lt;br&gt;Daniel O'Sheal was the son of David O'Sheal, and the John O'Sheal you mentioned was the brother of Daniel and son of David.&lt;br&gt;Daniel was born bet. 1722-1730 in Nansemond County, VA.&lt;br&gt;I want to explain I am not the only person who believes the surname was not O'Neal but rather O'Sheal.&lt;br&gt;As I reported to you earlier, the O'Sheal family owned many many acres in Chowan, Bertie, and Pasquotank Counties(Tyrrell County was formed from those counties and others.) Your search should not be limited to Tyrrell County. You need to look at the counties before Tyrrell was formed.&lt;br&gt;Have you seen the original copy of the marriage bond from the NC Archives?&lt;br&gt;As far as traveling far for a bride, that would not have been necessary for Daniel O'Sheal and his family because they did own property in the area near your Roughton/Routon family.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

      <description>Like I said in the previous posting, there were no Osheal in any of the early records of Tyrrell Co.  There were O'Neals in the Tyrrell Co. 1786 census and 1790 census. If you believe that is the correct spelling then you need to order a copy of the original marriage bond and compare the lettering to known spellings in the same person's handwriting.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I believe I have every book published on Tyrrell Co records up to the mid 1800's.  I do not have microfilm of Tyrrell records so I can't make that comparison for you.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I have Deeds of Chowan Precinct 1696 - 1723 and see that a John Osheall son of David Osheall leased 90 acres that had been part of the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co., VA. in 1720.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Back then (1789 in this case) people did not generally travel that far to find a wife but it is entirelly possible.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I think it is more likely she was a daughter of Richard O'Neal of Tyrrell Co.  He was in the same Census District and with the same census taker as Richard Rowton.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Have you made a determination of Sarah's parents?</description>

      <description>You could be mistaken because I wrote the Colonial History of the O'Sheal in 2003 and know O'Sheal was a surname in the area of North Carolina where the Roton/Roughton family lived.&lt;br&gt; O'Sheal very well could have been Sarah's surname.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;David O'Sheal came to the VA Colony in 1714. He was a very prominent merchant and attorney.&lt;br&gt;David owned properties in Chowan, Bertie, and many counties in North Carolina as did his sons.&lt;br&gt;What makes you think O'Sheal is a mistake in the marriage bonds other than your belief it is misspelled?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

      <description>I assume you are getting your information from the marriage bond.  I believe the Osheal spelling is a misinterpretation by the person who transcribed the marriage bond.  The old handwriting can be easily misread.  I have never come across another instance of that surname in my research of Tyrrell Co. whereas the O'Neal family (also various spellings) goes back in that area to at least the early 1700's.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Richard Roughton's name on the 1790 census also is not spelled Roughton but Rowton.  There were several spellings of the Roughton surname.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Jean&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

Elsie in 1931, Eric in 1933, Nora in 1924 and Roy in 1936.  We are slowly trying to fill in information in their records.  Mostly now in these classes about the dates of their birth and, sorry to say, death.  It's been very hard to get info on these, your family members.  I read in your father's obit that Roy was already deceased, but I can't find anything in the Social Security Death Index or any other holder of info.       <description>&lt;br&gt;Since John Roughton was the first Roughton in the Tyrrell Co. area, it stands to reason that Ann Hunnings was married to one of his sons.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John was in Tyrrell Co. by 1742:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Deed p. 293, 22 Feb 1742 - Patterson Willson of Pasquotank sells to John Roughton of Virginia for 20 pounds current Virginia money land all the plantation or tract of land containing by estimation one hundred &amp;amp; twenty acres be the same more or less situated lying and being on the North East side of Alligator Creek . . . . .  (MY NOTE:  I have a copy of this deed)&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John and his wife Agnes West had eight children, four of whom were sons.  His oldest son, John, may have died but I have found no trace of him after 1762 and do not know if he ever married.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John and Agnes' second son, Richard, married twice first to Martha Mann and second to Sarah O'Neal.  Their fourth son, Daniel, married Elizabeth Alexander.  That leaves their third son, Edward, who names his wife Ann in his will as the only possible one to have married the daughter of Zachariah &amp;amp; Sarah Hunnings.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John's wife Anges was definitely a West:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Tyrrell Co., NC Minutes Court of Pleas &amp;amp; Quarter Sessions 1755 thru 1761 Book 2 transcribed by Betty Fagan Burr:&lt;br&gt;pg. 14, item 32 (March 1756)&lt;br&gt;The Petition of John West, John Routon, Natha. Spence West and Agorss West wife John Routon read after consideration was ordered that as? Jams. Fox who inter married with Martha West Executrix of Edwd. West on his Husband Estate the said Edward West be arm Bound do forthwith give Security to the sd. John West, Nathinul West, John Routon and Agnus his wife and Indeminfie them from all Losses and Damage which theay may Sustain on account of that in Default thereof the said Excuters of James Fox do Deliver to the Said parties all and Singluer the goods &amp;amp; Chatles of the Edward West Deceased where pressed of now in the Hands of Thomas Fox Excutor of the said James Fox to the said Petitioners or give Security in the Sume of L100 Proclamation that a Sumons issue to sumon the Proper Parties to __?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Edward and Ann Hunninhgs Roughton had four known children:&lt;br&gt;Hoziah, Sally, Zillah and Luah.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Hoziah married Nancy McAllister and they had six known children.&lt;br&gt;-------------&lt;br&gt;The Edward Roughton who was the father of Alfred, Mary Jane, and Edward was born bef 1807 and died. ca. 1845 in Tyrrell Co.  I do not know the name of his wife.  Edward was most likely the son of Richard and his second wife Sarah O'Neal.  Richard was born about 1757 and died Bet. 08 Mar 1816 - Jul 1817.  He married Sarah O'Neal 8 Jan 1789.  Richard mentions his son Edward in his will as one of his two youngest children.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The son Edward, son of Edward, son of Richard, son of John was born in 1838 in Tyrrell Co.  He married Phebe F. Owens b. ca. 1837 in Tyrrell Co. on 27 Jan 1857.  They had three children:  John, Polly (Mary) and Martha Ellen.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Phebe F. Owens was the daughter of John and Sarah "Sally" Sikes Owens.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I do not know who Edward is with in the 1850 census unless it is his cousin Zilliah Roughton who was born ca. 1800 and would have been about 50 years old in the 1850 census.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I hope some of this has been of help to you.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Both Owens and Roughton are direct lines of mine.       <description>I am not a Roughton descendant.  I am researching the family tree for my direct ancestor Zachariah Hunnings (died 1790 Tyrrell County).  According to our Hunnings family history, Ann Hunnings, daughter of Zachariah Hunnings, married to Edward Roughton.  No other information was provided.  She is named as Ann Roughton in her father’s will (dated 21 December 1790 Tyrrell Co); Evan Dillon, MD (in a work he published in 1999) identified Edward Roughton as her husband.  I wanted to confirm the marriage and try to identify any children that may have been born to this couple.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;However, I quickly realized that all of the family trees posted to the internet cited the following marriage: Edward Roughton married on 26 January 1757 to Phebe F. Owens, b. 1736 Columbia (Twp), Tyrrell County, North Carolina (per family trees)&lt;br&gt;Then there are four to five children listed for this couple with the kids births ranging from 1761 to 1770.  Four daughters consistently appear.  &lt;br&gt;Sally, b. 1758; Zilla, b. 1761; Leah, b. 1764; Sui, b. 1767, d. May 1850.&lt;br&gt;And one son. Hoziah, b. 1790 d. May 1850, m. 15 Jan 1816 to Nancy McCallister.  The birthdates vary slightly; none of the girls are cited with marriages; and descendants appear to be tracing through Hoziah.  So I can guess that this is a matter of interest to those who trace their lineage to Hoziah.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Only one tree included a second wife identified simply as “Ann” with no children listed as born to her.  I realized that I was going to have to research at least the first three generations of Tyrrell Co Roughtons in order to identify who married Edward and when (maybe he had two wives?); and which, if any children had been born to Edward and Ann Hunnings.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;However, the marriage in 1757 of Edward Roughton, son of John Roughton and Agnes (some trees have her identified as Agnes West) is quite a big problem.  (See the chronological notes for the records I’ve pulled on the Roughton family in Tyrrell County posted in next message).  In summary, it was quite clear that Edward was likely born 1751-1755 and thus could not possibly have married in 1757.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In checking Edward and Phoebe’s marriage record at Tyrrell County website this is what I find:&lt;br&gt;Phebe F. Owens and Edward Roughton married on 26 January 1857 (not 1757), marriage performed by George M. West, M.G., Witnesses George M. West and Saml. McCleese, clk. (The county clerk in 1757 was C. Spruill). &lt;br&gt;This marriage record is also found at familysearch.org, Records Search Pilot, North Carolina Marriages, 1759-1979.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The marriage date which is cited in so many trees is off by 100 years.  But which is correct? The family trees, or the marriage bonds posted at the Tyrrell County website and familysearch.org (both of which were pulled from the North Carolina Archives)?  There is no question that marriages recorded in 1757 would be contained within an entirely separate volume from those recorded in 1857.  It is extremely unlikely that a transcriptionist pulling 1757 records would misread the date as 1857.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Also, if Edward and Phoebe married in 1857 in Tyrrell County I would expect to find them in the 1860 census in Tyrrell County.  Guess what?&lt;br&gt;1860 US Census&lt;br&gt;North Carolina, Tyrrell County, Columia P.O.&lt;br&gt;Counted 18 July 1860&lt;br&gt;Household 360&lt;br&gt;John Owens, age 65, Master Carpenter, b. North Carolina&lt;br&gt;Sarah Owens, age 65, b. NC&lt;br&gt;Mary Owens, age 32, Domestic, b. NC&lt;br&gt;Household 361&lt;br&gt;Edward Roughton, age 22, Mariner, $125 per prop, b. NC&lt;br&gt;Phebe Roughton age 23, b. NC&lt;br&gt;John Roughton, age 1, b. NC&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Obviously, the 1857 marriage date is correct and somehow or another someone has misread it as 1757. Those things happen. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This Edward (in the 1860 census) was born 1838 in North Carolina (per census).  &lt;br&gt;In looking at the 1850 census I find him in Tyrrell County with the following household.&lt;br&gt;Gabriel Craddick, age 44, Laborer&lt;br&gt;Zilpha Craddick, age 50&lt;br&gt;Amelia Hassel, age 18&lt;br&gt;Affa Hassel, age 16&lt;br&gt;Nathan F. Hassel, age 12&lt;br&gt;John Hassel, age 9&lt;br&gt;Spence Routon, age 29, Boatman&lt;br&gt;Hardy Gray, age 24, Boatman&lt;br&gt;James Chaplin, age 22, Boatman&lt;br&gt;Edward Routon, age 12&lt;br&gt;Julia Spencer, age 28&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I was quite surprised that he was not listed with parents (but that would be too easy, wouldn’t it?)&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I did find him in the Apprenticeship bonds for Tyrrell County with two siblings.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;27 Oct 1845 Edward Roughton, orphan of Edward Roughton, 7 years of &lt;br&gt;age, apprenticed to James T. Roughton, Farming&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;27 October 1845 Mary Jane Roughton, orphan of Edward Roughton, &lt;br&gt;9 years of age, apprenticed to Daniel W. Bateman, Housekeeping&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;26 January 1846 Alfred Roughton, 18 years of age, orphan of Edward &lt;br&gt;Roughton, decased, apprenticed to Charles Johnson, Farming&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Although I don’t understand why Edward would be found in the Gabriel Craddick household when he had been apprenticed to James T. Roughton, at least we do know that Edward had two siblings, Mary Jane and Alfred, and that their father was Edward.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;James T. Roughton is found in the 1850 census in Tyrrell County, age 29, Laborer with wife Mary Routon, age 25 and daughter Elizabeth A. Roughton, age 2. &lt;br&gt;James T. Roughton and Mary Swain m. 17 September 1845 in Tyrrell County.&lt;br&gt;James was born, then, about 1821 and is possibly an older brother or more likely an uncle to Edward, Mary Jane and Alfred.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Mary Jane born in 1836, and Alfred, born in 1828 (per census). Their father was Edward who must have died in late 1845, does appear, for the first time as head of household, in the 1830 census for Tyrrell County.  I don’t find a marriage record for him in Tyrrell County; and do not find a marriage record for him in North Carolina Marriages, 1759-1979 (FamilySearch Record Search).  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Could not locate Mary Jane Roughton in the 1850 census.  She would only be 14 years old in 1850 and thus could not have married.  She was apprenticed to Daniel Bateman.  She is not listed in his household as either Roughton or Bateman.  This suggests that she has died; however, she does appear in the 1880 census as the aunt of Sarah Roughton (dau of Edward and Phoebe).&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I did not expect to find Alfred in Charles Johnson household and didn’t.  Alfred would be at least 22 years old by that date.  But could not locate him anywhere in the US in the 1850 or 1860 census.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Edward Roughton (the father) is found in the 1830 census in Tyrrell County next door to William Roughton (I haven’t figured out who he is yet or how he fits into the family tree – possibly a son of Edward and Ann?). &lt;br&gt;Edward Roughton &lt;br&gt;2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0&lt;br&gt;1 male of 20 and under 30 (b. bet 1800-1810)&lt;br&gt;1 female of 20 and under 30 (b. bet 1800-1810)&lt;br&gt;2 males under age 5 (b. bet 1825-1830)&lt;br&gt;1 female under age 5 (b. bet 1825-1830)&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The record shows that both Edward and his wife were born between 1800 and 1810.  With three children born between 1825 and 1830 they likely married in 1825 (kids born 1826/1828/1830)?  The female born between 1800 and 1810 could be a sister of either Edward or his wife.  Alfred would be one of the males born between 1825-1830 (born 1828 per census records); the other son may have been close enough to the age of 21 years to forego a guardian or apprentice bond. The girl born 1825-1830 could have married before 1845 and thus would not appear in the apprentice bonds. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;1840 Census Tyrrell County&lt;br&gt;Edward Roughton, Head&lt;br&gt;1 male of 30 and under 40 (Edward b. bet 1800-1810)&lt;br&gt;1 female of 30 and under 40 (wife b. bet 1800-1810)&lt;br&gt;1 female of 10 and under 15 (dau b. bet 1825-1830)&lt;br&gt;1 male of 5 and under 10 (son b. bet 1830-1835) &lt;br&gt;prob Alfred marked in wrong column&lt;br&gt;1 male under age 5 (son b. bet 1835-1840, Edward)&lt;br&gt;1 female under age 5 (dau b. bet 1835-1840, Mary Jane)&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Edward is listed between the Jesse Hassell and Jos Bateman households with Cooper, Brickhouses, Chaplain and Asa Etheridge as nearest neighbors.  It turns out later that Asa married Mary Jane, orphaned dau of this Edward (see 1880 census). At this time Asa is “of 20 and under 30” so born bet 1810-1820.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Best guess as to who Edward’s parents might be: Richard Roughton and 2nd wife Sarah O’Shear. This is the same Richard who married to Martha Mann (and I think has been confused with another Richard Roughton who filed a will in Virginia in February 1792? 98?).  This Richard appears in records in Tyrrell County through October 1819 and probably died shortly before the 1820 census, at which time Sarah appears as head of household.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Sarah Roughton (Sarah O’Shear, widow of Richard)&lt;br&gt;0 1 0 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 &lt;br&gt;1 female of over 45 (Richard’s mother we know has died; must be Sarah’s&lt;br&gt;	mother or even an older widowed sister or aunt)&lt;br&gt;1 female of 26 and under 44 (Sarah, b. bet 1776-1794)&lt;br&gt;1 female of 16 and under 25 (b. bet 1795-1804)&lt;br&gt;1 male of 16 and under 25 (b. bet 1795-1804) Edward?&lt;br&gt;1 male of 10 and under 15 (b. bet 1805-1810) &lt;br&gt;1 female of 10 and under 15 (b. bet 1805-1810)&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Richard (son of John &amp;amp; Agnes) had two brothers, Edward, and Daniel.  Edward appears to have produced only one son and Edward died in 1797 and Daniel produced only one child, a daughter named Edny.  The only other Roughton male old enough to have been the father of Edward (and married before 1801) was John Roughton (son of Richard and Martha Mann) who married in 1804 to Phillis Hopkins.  However, both John and Phillis died before 1820 and their four children were appointed gaurdians (Abner, Samuel/Daniel, Polley and Betsey).  None were named Edward who, even if born in 1819, would have been appointed a guardian.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As to Edward Roughton the son who married Phoebe F.       <description>I have also traced a part of my family tree back to John Roughton. The route to John was through Robert Lee Roughton, born 11-01-1893 in Riddleville, Washington County, GA. He was the son of Turner Eli Roughton and Annie Laura Rogers. Next generation was Albert Levin Roughton and Mary W. Bynum; then Enoch Roughton and Harriet Mote. Of course, John Roughton was next.       <description>I am looking for the descendents and ancestors of Thomas B. Roughton who married Rachel Rook on 14 Jun 1803 in Elm, Cambridgeshire.  Three of their children where Benjamin b.1807,John b.1814 and Rebekah. Benjamin married Sarah Thompson in 1829 in March, Cambrdge.  They had 12 children. Only 6 lived and the moved to the USA in the 1850' s after Benjamins death. John married Mary Kitchen in 1832 in March, Cambridge.  They appear on the 1851 and 1881 Census still in March, Cambridge.</description>

Believe &lt;br&gt;she could be the daughter of one of Enoch's &lt;br&gt;brothers, but cannot find out any information &lt;br&gt;on them. Know there was a William and a &lt;br&gt;Zachariah. Any help would be appreciated.</description>
