I have to make a correction to my message, thanks to the eagle eyes of John Freesmith.

The date that Charles Rountree lived and leased land in Mulladry was 1737, not 1837. My apologies for the mistake.

Fred
Charles Rountree of Armagh

This information is primarily for the descendents, in the USA, of Thomas Rountree and Evy Sturgis.

There are a number of trees which relate to the father of Thomas, who was Charles Rountree (wife Lydia, with no proof whatsoever that her surname was McMan). Charles lived and leased land in Mulladry, Co. Armagh, in 1837. Most of the trees that I have seen quote Charles’ death date as 1759, as does the IGI. Again that has been given without any proof at all.

Well, I am certain that date is wrong, just like the ‘false’ tree of Charles’ ancestors up to Moses. I think I have proof that Charles died in 1781/1782. There was a will for Charles Roundtree/Rountree in the Armagh Diocesan records dated 6th November 1781 and proved in 1782, so he died either late 1781 or 1782. The will was recorded in the Armagh Diocese, but no longer exists, and, like so many other documents, was probably destroyed by the IRA in the Four Courts fire of 1922. All that is left is the index to the will where he is recorded as Charles Roundtree/Rountree, of Mulladry, Co. Armagh.

Now we know that in 1837 Charles had three sons, John, Thomas and William. As Thomas was born in 1733 I would guess that Charles was born around 1700 to 1710, certainly not the 1680 quoted by the IGI and others.

Charles (now Rowntree), along with my ancestor, John Rowntry, is mentioned in the 1753 poll records and both are mentioned (now Rountree) as overseers of roads in the Kilmore parish in 1771. I suspect that Charles and John were brothers but have no proof.

It appears that Charles did not have a son named Charles senior enough to have inherited the land in Mulladry so I am led to the conclusion that the above will refers to the father of Thomas.

It might be argued that an age of around 70 years or so might be too long for that period in time, but the Rountree family did have members who lived to a good age, with my own 3 x great grandfather being 91 years old when he died in 1889, in Co. Armagh.

Fred
Re: Rountree family origin

Bercha,

I have not researched any Rountree family in Texas in the 18th. and early 19th. centuries. Towards the end of the 19th. century the parents of Joseph Gustave Rountree moved, I believe, to Texas. Joseph, who lived in Beeville, Texas, was the author of the book 'Rowntree and Rountree Family History 1521 - 1953'.

Joseph lists a lot of American Rountree families, including a few from Texas, including some born towards the end of the 18th. century. If you can access an LDS library they will get a filmed copy of the book for you to read.

I downloaded the book from the internet some years ago, in Adobe, but it is very large, taking up nearly 50 MB. I have just tried to find it again but it seems to have disappeared.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Fred

Family history

Once again, I have a NewYear question for Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree family members.

I know that this might seen as boring and repetitious, as I have asked this question at the start of the New Year for some time now, but I, and I would think lots of other members of our family, would very much like to find the original source(s) of the family tree of the Rowntree/Rountree/Roundtree family from Moses Rowntree (b.1550) through William, Joseph and John, to Frances (sic) Rountree (b. 1649) which has been used in a number of family trees.

The earliest that I have been able to find when this tree first appears is in 1963, in a book, The family of Ebeneezer Durden Rountree, by W.E.Rountree, without any references, and similar information was sent to the Mormon Church, for their records, by Frances La Merle Cochrane in the 1970s.

La Merle Cochrane’s notes said that the information was gathered by I.W.Rountree (d. 1979), of Swainsboro, Georgia, during a visit to the British Isles. A nephew of I.W. told me that I.W. never visited the British Isles, but had no references for the tree. W.E.Rountree, who was I.W.Rountree’s son, never acknowledged my letters.

If any one does know where the data, if correct, originated, e.g. in a family bible or church records, will they please let me know. I am sure that there are many family members who have this tree in their genealogy and they would like to believe that it was based on solid records, rather than some possible guess work by person(s) unknown, or even the work of a rogue genealogist. I will not include it in mine unless the sources can be shown to be valid. Personally I think it is total fiction. The tree is totally unknown to the English and Irish families, which is where one would expect it to have its origins.

Do the American Rountree family members come from Ireland or Yorkshire?

Well, we now have eleven Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree men who have had their Y-DNA tested, plus a further man is in the process of being tested. Of those eleven men, nine live in the USA, while two live in England. I am one of those living in England, although my father was born in Co. Armagh, Ireland. The other Englishman descends directly from a Yorkshire ancestor.

Of the nine living in the USA, eight have a DNA profile that says there is a 90% chance of a common ancestor 12 generations or less back, and I also fall into that same category. Of those nine Americans two have definite connections back to the same area in Co. Armagh as me, while five can trace their ancestry back to a William Rountree born in Virginia around 1699. The other two men can only trace their ancestry, at the moment, back to the beginning of the 19th century.

One descendent of William Rountree and one descendent of an Armagh Rountree match exactly on 67 markers, suggesting that there is an 80% chance that the common ancestor was around nine generations back. This would just about coincide with the arrival of the Rountree family in Armagh. Does this suggest that William Rowntree might have been a grandson of the ‘Old Man Rountree’ who came to Virginia, from Armagh, with his six sons, according to the Rountree legend written by Joseph Rountree in 1867?

Did the Rountree family go to Armagh from Yorkshire? Nobody knows. The Irish records do not exist, although it is almost certain that they went to Ireland, from England, as part of the Cromwellian plantations in the middle of the 17th century.

The problem is that the only Englishman who has a direct connection to Yorkshire does not match at all to the rest of the tested men.

It would be nice if more family members from all over the world would consider taking a DNA test.

Thank you.

Fred Rowntree
My great grandmother was of a mixed race and she died at a young age. I draw a blank when I try to pull up any information on her. It is as if she did not exist. I am so anxious to find out about her. The were from Millen Georgia. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hello!

Oh how I wish I had more info on our g-g-(g) grandfather John J Roundtree. He is a mystery. There is no birth cert. or death cert. The living family members I have been able to connect with all have been stopped at him and can go no further. We know he was from South Carolina per the Census but we have not found his parents or siblings. (He only shows on the Census after marriage.) My great grandfather was his last child (John Colley Roundtree) born about 1863. My suspicion is that he died in the Civil War as he totally disappears before the 1870 Census. But I cannot find proof of this. I do find a John Roundtree in the Veterans Gravesite in Little Rock National Cemetery with a death date of 19 Nov 1864 but I can't prove this is our John. Mary is listed as a widow on the 1870 Census. It was around 1872 she married Addison Griffitts.

I am preparing to go back east and plan to stop at the Wolfe Creek Missionary Baptist Cemetery. We have MANY ancestors buried there. John J does not seem to be one of them but I am going to look really hard to make sure he wasn't overlooked in the recordings. There is also a Caddell Cemetery and Pleasant View Cemetery. I have a photo of your g-g grandmother's headstone. I have attached it to this message. (You may already have it.) Our ancestors stayed in Whitley County for a LONG time. Someone should know something! I would love getting to the bottom of this mystery. It has become a quest of sorts for me.

Keep searching. If I discover anything in my travel back east I will definately share it! Many of us feel a need to know more about John J Roundtree. My brother has agreed to do the DNA testing for the Roundtree lineage. He is very excited.

Thank you for writing. The Roundtree's have become my passion. I truly wish I knew more about their lives.

Gail

It appears we are from the same John J Roundtree of NC. (1850 Census notes he is from SC) My father is Enos R Rountree Jr, born in Whitley County, KY. He is still living and I would love to complete his line for him.

I am new to Ancestry.com but not to genealogy. I see that your post is dated 2004 but I was hoping you may have obtained further information or can point me in a good direction.
Rountree family origin

Once again, I have a NewYear question for Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree family members.

I, and I would think lots of other members of our family, would very much like to find the original source(s) of the family tree of the Rowntree/Rountree/Roundtree family from Moses Rowntree (b.1550) through William, Joseph and John, to Frances (sic) Rountree (b.

If any one does know where the data originated, e.g. in a family bible or church records, will they please let me know. I am sure that there are many family members who have this tree in their genealogy and they would like to believe that it was based on solid records, rather than some possible guess work by person(s) unknown, or even the work of a rogue genealogist. I will not include it in mine unless the sources can be shown to be valid.

Additionally, I would like to mention DNA testing. To date, in the U.S.A., only family members, who descend from just two ancestors, Thomas Rountree (born in Armagh, Ireland, in 1733) and William Rountree (born in Virginia about 1699) have tested and the results show they are from the same original ancestor, who was almost certainly living in Ireland around 1700. My father is from the same area as Thomas and my DNA match these American family members. Did our common ancestor come from Yorkshire as the Rountree myth says?

Well, only one Englishman, who has direct connections to Yorkshire, has tested and his DNA did not match. It would be nice if more family members from all over the world would consider taking a DNA test.

Thank you.

Fred Rowntree
Hi,
I writing a trade directory of Irish Cabinet Makers from 1650-1901. Might I ask you two more questions 1) when was William John Rountree born (ie day, month and year) and who were his parents (was his father as Cabinet Maker); 2) I found two other Charles Rountree's living in Richhill, Armagh in the 1901 census (one aged 46 and the other 35 years old) who are both Cabinet Makers. Might these two persons be younger brothers of William John Rountree, if so do you have their births and marriage dates (ie day, month and year and who they married).
Yours John Rogers

Elaine,

Unfortuantely having your DNA tested would not give any links to the Rountree family. Our testing has been done on the Y-DNA which is only passed down through the male line. If your mother has a brother who is alive, or he has sons, then they could be tested, if willing to do so.

At the moment, if the results were positive, it would link your family back to the Rountree family who were in the parish of Kilmore, Co. Armagh, in 1664. It is almost certain that this is from where John Rountree's ancestors came.

There is a chance, of course, that John did not descend from the Armagh family, in which case it would be expected that a mismatch would be seen.

We have one Rountree who descends directly from the Yorkshire, England, family; his results were significantly different to say that the Armagh family are very probably not related to him in around the last 1000 years.

We do also need more men who have proven descent from the Yorkshire family to test to get more comparisons.

Fred

I am interested in having mu DNA tested. My mothere was a Rountree.

I have traced my Rountree side back to my great great great grandfather. His name was John Roundtree born 1805 Monaghan, Ireland. The Rountree's settled in Taunton, Ma in 1849.

How would this benefit me, and which test do you recomend.

Thanks

Elaine

Yes, that person was correct. The Rowntree name has been associated with sweet making for over 100 years, although the business is now owned by the Swiss company Nestlé. The business was set up in the city of York, Yorkshire, England, by Joseph Rowntree. Yorkshire is where the family name was, as far as I know, first mentioned, in 1301, being Robto Rountre, in the village of Newby, Yorkshire.

There are Rountree/Rowntree families in England, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who all probably originate from England. However, in spite of what is taken as gospel by some members of the family, there is no proof whatsoever to show how families in the USA are related back to England. We do have proof for a relationship back to Northern Ireland in the 17th. century.

There is a DNA project being run by Family Tree DNA, whcih is where you can get details.

Fred

Greetings, I am relatively new to ancestry.com. I have a quest I hope to succeed at, in any form, while I am on here. Although I am young, I do seek to know exactly where my lineage comes from. For the longest I have understood that the Roundtree line that I am from traces back to Jackson, even Brandon, Mississippi. I have also acquired knowledge that we have lineage even in England. I was at a Sams Club with my mother and when the woman assisting us saw our last name on the membership card, she told how there was a factory, a chocolate factory if I'm not mistaken, in Yorktown with that very name. She said they made very, delicious chocolate :-)..If anyone can help feel free to email me at BambizBeauty@yahoo.com. I would love to see how many others out there are uniquely connected.

The latest test for DNA on the Rountree family has just been reported by FTDNA. On 67 markers a descendent of Thomas Rountree, born in Armagh, Ireland, in 1733, matches exactly with the DNA of a descendent of William Rountree, born in Virginia around 1699, through his son, Turner Rountree, born in Virginia around 1742. Turner was the brother of Richardson Rountree.

It is known that the father of Thomas was Charles Rountree, who was living in Armagh at the beginning of the 18th Century. The line back to Charles, through Thomas, is 8 generations. It is not known how many generations the William Rountree line is back to the British Isles. However, given the perfect match between the two participants, the chances of the common ancestor being just 9 generations back is 99.4%, it is therefore almost 100% certain that William Rountree, born in Virginia around 1699, came from the Armagh family of Rountree.
ROUNTREE DNA UPDATE MATCHES US LINES

ROUNTREE-ROUNDTREE-ROWANTREE-ROWNTREE-ROUNTRY SURNAME

As of yesterday August 12, 2009 five participants whose ancestor came to America are a match. We now know that dispite the many Rountree stories and how these five ancestors arrived in America, we all share a common ancestor.

These lines are:
Assigned Lines:
Charles Roundtree b c1680 England or Ireland m Lydia McMann (67 marker test)
+ Thomas Roundtree b 1733 Co Armagh Ire Orange Co. NC, m. Eva Sturgis
+ Andrew Roundtree b 1772 Orange Co NC m Mary "Polly" Robinson
+ John Jackson Roundtree b 1815 Maury Co TN m Margaret J. McKee
+John Marion Roundtree b 1850-1851 m. Melvina Witherspoon
+Paul Hollis Rountree b. 1878 Maury County m. Sarah Adeline Spivey

John Rountree b c1798 Co Armagh Ireland m Mary Anne (67 marker test)
+ Charles Rountree b 1822 Co. Armagh Ire m Frances Jones
+ William John Rountree b c1858 Co. Armagh Ire m Mary Connolly
+Frederick Rountree b 1883 in Co. Armagh Ire m Margaret Mallon

NOTE: The two males above match 66 markers.

James Vandiver Jones b 1803 SC or VA (67 marker test)
William J. Jones b 1826 Greenville County SC
William J. "Johnny" Jones b 1854 Anderson County, SC

NOTE: James V Jones matches the line of Charles Rountree b c1680 65 of 67 markers.
James V Jones matches the line of John Rountree b 1798 64 of 67 markers.
James Vandiver Jones is a Roundtree by any spelling. If anyone has information
that would help his descendants please contact me and I will get you in touch
with each other. It is believed that this mismatch in markers occured about 1800
but can't be certain.

Turner Roundtree b c1790 Spartenburg SC m Clara "Clarey" Smith (37 markers)
+ John S Rowntree b c1830 Spartenburg SC m Emily Francis Lanford
+ James Turner Rowntree b 1856 SC m Mattie Rowena Bearden
+ Carl Bearden Rowntree b1884 TN m Harriett Vivian Fowler

NOTE: This ancestor matches the lines of Charles Rountree b. 1680 and John Rountree b. 1798 on all 37 markers.

We have another line who has tested with 37/37 markers matching. I do not have access to the ancestral line at this time but hope to have it soon. It is said that this is a line of Richardson Roundtree.

************************************************************************
FACTS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:
There is a sixth participant whose line is of Yorkshire England who is not a match...not even a close one. He matches 30 markers of 37 markers. If tested on 67 markers he would undoubtbly still be unmatched with the rest.

Of course this was very disappointing to a number of Rountree's who have believed that they they were from this line.

Perhaps with further testing on new members we can find other matches for John Rowntree b. 1680 in Yorkshire England.

That line is as follows:
Unassigned Group:
John Rowntree b c1680 Yorkshire, England d 1741 Yorkshire, England m Ann Marton -
+ Robert Rowntree b 1722 Yorkshire, England d c1789 m Mary Halliday
+ Robert Rowntree b 1754 Yorkshire, England m Ann Wood
+ William Rowntree b 1792 Yorkshire, England m Elizabeth Bowman
+ John Rowntree b 1824 Yorkshire, England m Sarah Horn
+ William G. Rowntree b 1850 London, England m Anne J. Kirkby

We beg you to participate in this surname DNA study. A participant should be male, have a proven line to their earliest known ancestor.

To order your kit go to: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/rountree/order

You may also contact me at ginrounATcomcast.net

Happy researching!

Ginny Rountree

I have just begun searching for my husband's family. We have found notes and little pieces at a time. Today we found a handwritten note in an old book-Roundtree in Texas was relatives. Margaret Murphy was J Tault Murphy's sister. If she had been married before to an Ingram as on the 1880 census from lauderdale, Alabama, then we just may have a link. We do not have much on our family. Let me know, willing to share
Mary Murphy in TX but of OK-Tenn-Ala

First of all, this is Becky...not Amy. I'm using a friend's computer.

Secondly, please accept my apology for taking so long to reply. I didn't see the notice until this morning.

To answer your question, I have little/no information about about Martin Roundtree. My UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) chapter placed a military marker at his gravesite last fall. I was trying to find any descendants that I could...just to let them know about our ceremony. I have pictures from the ceremony, if your MIL is interested. Also some paperwork (his pension application, I believe...testing my memory here!) I can scan in for her.

My email is historyluvr@hotmail.com

Becky

Rowntree/Rountree DNA

There is a Rountree/Rowntree etc. project site on Family Tree DNA. So far, there are 4 participants.

I am one of the participants and my father and his ancestors lived in Co. Armagh, Ireland. Prior to that is pure guesswork, but it is rumoured that the family came from Yorkshire, England.

Another participant is descended from Thomas Rountree and Evy Sturgis, who immigrated, in 1760, to, eventually, Orange County, North Carolina. Thomas, who was born in 1733, came from the same place in Co. Armagh as my family, so I am certain that we are related, but, I know for certain, at least, 8 generations apart.

A third participant is descended from Turner Roundtree, of South Carolina. Turner was born about 1796, and it is possible that he is a grandson of Richardson Rountree, but there is no evidence other than his name Turner.

I think that it usually assumed, in the States, that Richardson Rountree was a descendent of immigrants who came directly from England. But did they?

Why the query? Well, all the three participants above have identical y-DNA across 37 markers. According to FTDNA, there is a 99% chance that all three of us have a common ancestor around 10 generations ago. Now, the Rountree family was in Co. Armagh in 1660, which would be about 11 or 12 generations ago. Does this indicate that Richardson Rountree's ancestors came from Co. Armagh?

What was wanted was a Rountree/Rowntree who is directly descended from a Yorkshire family. Well, we now have one whose forefather was
John Rowntree, born around 1680.

This Rowntree's DNA results for the first 25 markers were promising, there being two mismatches. This could lead to the possibility of 90% that we had a common ancestor around 800 years ago. This is around the time that surnames were starting to be widely used in England. However, on the next 12 markers there were a further 6 mismatches, which really precludes any relationship in the last 2000 years, if the line from father to father is 'legitimate'.

What is needed is more Rountree men to be tested, especially those descended from the Richardson Rountree line, and from the Georgia family, whose ancestry, I believe, is unknown, in spite of their 'trees'. But at least 37 markers need to be tested, and preferably 67. As can be seen from above only 25 markers are almost certainly a waste of time.
