I have to make a correction to my message, thanks to the eagle eyes of John Freesmith.

The date that Charles Rountree lived and leased land in Mulladry was 1737, not 1837. My apologies for the mistake.

Fred
Charles Rountree of Co. Armagh

This information is primarily for the descendents, in the USA, of Thomas Rountree and Evy Sturgis.

There are a number of trees which relate to the father of Thomas, who was Charles Rountree (wife Lydia, with no proof whatsoever that her surname was McMan). Charles lived and leased land in Mulladry, Co. Armagh, in 1837. Most of the trees that I have seen quote Charles’ death date as 1759, as does the IGI. Again that has been given without any proof at all.

Well, I am certain that date is wrong, just like the ‘false’ tree of Charles’ ancestors up to Moses. I think I have proof that Charles died in 1781/1782. There was a will for Charles Roundtree/Rountree in the Armagh Diocesan records dated 6th November 1781 and proved in 1782, so he died either late 1781 or 1782. The will was recorded in the Armagh Diocese, but no longer exists, and, like so many other documents, was probably destroyed by the IRA in the Four Courts fire of 1922. All that is left is the index to the will where he is recorded as Charles Roundtree/Rountree, of Mulladry, Co. Armagh.

Now we know that in 1837 Charles had three sons, John, Thomas and William. As Thomas was born in 1733 I would guess that Charles was born around 1700 to 1710, certainly not the 1680 quoted by the IGI and others.

Charles (now Rowntree), along with my ancestor, John Rowntry, is mentioned in the 1753 poll records and both are mentioned (now Rountree) as overseers of roads in the Kilmore parish in 1771. I suspect that Charles and John were brothers but have no proof.

It appears that Charles did not have a son named Charles senior enough to have inherited the land in Mulladry so I am led to the conclusion that the above will refers to the father of Thomas.

It might be argued that an age of around 70 years or so might be too long for that period in time, but the Rountree family did have members who lived to a good age, with my own 3 x great grandfather being 91 years old when he died in 1889, in Co. Armagh.

Fred
Mary,

Your message again emphasises the need to get proven facts about our family's ancestry. Too often family members include in their trees, as fact, information based solely on myth and, I think, some deliberate falsehhods generated by a rogue genealogist.

With reference to the Rountree DNA we know have nine Rountree (or variant names) who match pretty well on 67 markers in the DNA tests. Of these three of us can definitely trace our ancestry back to Co. Armagh in Ireland, while four others can trace their ancestry, with a high degree of certainty back to William and Dorcus. Do those four descend from the Co. Armagh family? We don't know for certain but as one of each group match perfectly the chances are very high.

The other two matches cannot trace their ancestry back far enough to say if they descend from William and Dorcus.

I must admit to being younger than yourself (I am 77) and hope to keep trying to get to the root of our ancestry. I think it is people like yourself and Mary Gregg (who seems to have 'retired'), along with Bob Baird, who have tried to keep us on the truthful path.

Fred

Hi There! I would like to throw in some facts, with proof to back them up about our William and Dorcus. You are correct there is NO PROOF, and much against Dorcus having been a Dudley. An early researcher jumped to that conclusion just because of the one Baptiaimal record of son Dudley. There are no clues to her name, as you said it could have been Thomas, Richardson or Turner. One little clue that might make it worth while to look for a Turner family is a 1688 patent of land to a Charles Turner, and 1685 Thomas and Wm listed as immegrants and C. Turner of New Kent was given land for their passage.
Several other descendants and I spent a good week working on all the errors in this family. There have been several. ToWit: As well as Dorcus not being a Dudley; Richardson's 1st wife was Matilda Anderson dau. of John and Susanna Anderson; second wife ( and my ancestor) was not the dau. of John Hart "The Signer",her parents were Benjamin and Ann Jernigan Hart of Craven Co. NC. also in my line son Thomas Hart R. wife's name was Mary GILBERT not GILBREATH (proof) Richardson's Bible. See http:genforman.genealogy.com/rountree/messages/1246.htm1
Hope this clears up those errors. I would love to have some help with searching for Mary Gilbert family in SC. her father was James, my time is limited as I am now 83 yrs. young and am not able to work much at this. Please contact me directly maryhspringer@comcast.net.
Family history

Once again, I have a NewYear question for Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree family members.

I know that this might seen as boring and repetitious, as I have asked this question at the start of the New Year for some time now, but I, and I would think lots of other members of our family, would very much like to find the original source(s) of the family tree of the Rowntree/Rountree/Roundtree family from Moses Rowntree (b.1550) through William, Joseph and John, to Frances (sic) Rountree (b. 1649) which has been used in a number of family trees.

The earliest that I have been able to find when this tree first appears is in 1963, in a book, The family of Ebeneezer Durden Rountree, by W.E.Rountree, without any references, and similar information was sent to the Mormon Church, for their records, by Frances La Merle Cochrane in the 1970s.

La Merle Cochrane’s notes said that the information was gathered by I.W.Rountree (d. 1979), of Swainsboro, Georgia, during a visit to the British Isles. A nephew of I.W. told me that I.W. never visited the British Isles, but had no references for the tree. W.E.Rountree, who was I.W.Rountree’s son, never acknowledged my letters.

If any one does know where the data, if correct, originated, e.g. in a family bible or church records, will they please let me know. I am sure that there are many family members who have this tree in their genealogy and they would like to believe that it was based on solid records, rather than some possible guess work by person(s) unknown, or even the work of a rogue genealogist. I will not include it in mine unless the sources can be shown to be valid. Personally I think it is total fiction. The tree is totally unknown to the English and Irish families, which is where one would expect it to have its origins.

Do the American Rountree family members come from Ireland or Yorkshire?

Well, we now have eleven Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree men who have had their Y-DNA tested, plus a further man is in the process of being tested. Of those eleven men, nine live in the USA, while two live in England. I am one of those living in England, although my father was born in Co. Armagh, Ireland. The other Englishman descends directly from a Yorkshire ancestor.

Of the nine living in the USA, eight have a DNA profile that says there is a 90% chance of a common ancestor 12 generations or less back, and I also fall into that same category. Of those nine Americans two have definite connections back to the same area in Co. Armagh as me, while five can trace their ancestry back to a William Rountree born in Virginia around 1699. The other two men can only trace their ancestry, at the moment, back to the beginning of the 19th century.

One descendent of William Rountree and one descendent of an Armagh Rountree match exactly on 67 markers, suggesting that there is an 80% chance that the common ancestor was around nine generations back. This would just about coincide with the arrival of the Rountree family in Armagh. Does this suggest that William Rowntree might have been a grandson of the ‘Old Man Rountree’ who came to Virginia, from Armagh, with his six sons, according to the Rountree legend written by Joseph Rountree in 1867?

Did the Rountree family go to Armagh from Yorkshire? Nobody knows. The Irish records do not exist, although it is almost certain that they went to Ireland, from England, as part of the Cromwellian plantations in the middle of the 17th century.

The problem is that the only Englishman who has a direct connection to Yorkshire does not match at all to the rest of the tested men.

It would be nice if more family members from all over the world would consider taking a DNA test.

Thank you.

Fred Rowntree
Assume you are perhaps in Ireland? I have visit the Shercock, Kingscourt, Shercock area of Co. Cavan as I have relations in this area related to my great grandmother Elizabeth Orr Babington (Abt 1839 - 1880). I have a couple of Rountree connections. A late second cousin once removed Lexie Hall (1926-2007)of Drumeague, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan was married to a Rountree. Going further back on my Magheracloone, Carrickacross, Co. Monaghan Babington side I had a distant cousin by the name of Roger Breaden (1860-1932)whose wife was a Mary Anne Rountree (Abt 1857-1919). This Mary Anne Rountree was born in Co. Cavan and was the daughter of an Alexander Rountree (Abt 1835-?). This Alexander Rountree is on the Rountree Family Tree that has been discussed here.

The Rountree tree i have notes the following, as noted previously this tree has few dates:

1. Charles Rountree
Born about 1710 in in theory Armagh. In about 1730 he went to Killigriffem Bailieborough (Co. Cavan) where he married Mollie Coleman.

2. Jack Rountree of Killyvaghan, married a Mmrs. Peggy Ebbet formerly McFadden.

3. Nancie Rountree, married William Smith (Domena). There were five children in this family:
3. a. John Smith (Domena) married Nancie Rountree (Campstown) - Had four children.
3. b. Robert Smith (USA) - No children listed.
3. c. Esther Smith, married Alexander Foreman (USA) - Two daughters.
3. d. Charles Smith (Bailieborough) married Jane Wilson (Skeagh) - Nine children
3. e. Margaret Ann Smith married James Campaign (Canada) - Ten children.

This Rountree tree is large and in places hard to follow. Have you tried looking for people in the 1901 and 1910 Irish census online?

JuliaLouise,

There is a Nancie Rountree on the tree, who married a John Smith. No dates are given on the tree, except for the first person on the chart, being Charles Rountree born about 1710.

However, the chart indicates that there were no children from the marriage to John Smith and Nancie then married Ambrose Forsythe, with whom she had 5 children. However none were named Alexander.

I have the chart on 6 separate pages, which I can send to you if you give me your e-mail address.

Fred

She has a transcription of the tree and told me about an entry: JOHN SMITH B. 1810 m. NANCY ROUNTREE. They had a son called ALEXANDER SMITH and we think he might be a great, great grandfather of ours. Can you tell me how I go about seeing this tree?

I am searching for any family history on either Neverson Rountree (b. abt. 1824) and Martha Rountree (b. abt. 1834). They married in Gates Co., NC 2/26/1856. Neverson served in the Civil War. They had several children. Martha then married Richard Whitley in Gates Co. 3/17/1864. I can tie neither Neverson nor Martha to any other Rountrees in Gates Co., and would appreciate any help.

I have found a will for a John Wilson who died in 1863. The will mentions his father-in-law Jones Rowntree and his son (i.e. Jones' son) Meredith. John's wife is Ann (Rowntree)
She would seem to be another child of Jones and Alice.

Does anyone know anything about this John and Ann as I'm wondering if this John Wilson is connected to my Wilsons.

Evelyn

Hi. I've worked on genealogy for the Roundtree family for many years. My paternal grandmother was a Roundtree. We all live in Schriever/Thibodaux, LA area. Elisha had 2 children - Nancy and William. I descend from William. Nancy married a man named Charles Hawley and they moved to Louisville, KY with their children and possibly her mother Charlotte. Poor Elisha was killed in Texas. He supposedly was robbed and shot. They did bring his body back to Terrebonne Parish and buried him. Then them moved. William remained in the area. A man named John Guyot Smith in NY wrote the most interesting story on Elisha and his brother. Told the story of his life in Natchez and Terrebonne parish. I have one great uncle Roundtree left living - Hale Roundtree. My grandmother June died in 2006. Her father was Joseph Roundtree married to Cecil Roundtree. His father was Sam. Sam's father was William. The old Roundtree house was torn down, but the property all still remains in the family. Please contact me if you have any questions. My grandmother's brother was Alton Roundtree. He was once the mayor of Thibodaux.

J.

Yes, you are correct. DNA is passed either down the male line or the female line, therefore you cannot trace your Rountree DNA yourself. It would have to be done through any male descendent of your mother's father. But as Mervyn Rountree and yourself have a common male ancestor, Charles Rountree, who married Bettie Ebbet, you already have your male DNA line, which will be basically the same as Mervyn.

If you want to know more about the Rountree DNA visit 'www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Rountree'

I have the Charles Rountree tree as 6 separate pages in Word. I will e-mail them to you. I have your e-mail address.

Fred

Since I am a female and I descend through a female line, my DNA wouldn't be worth testing.

Thanks again.

Jwaring05

J.

AS I said, there were two Letitia Rountrees born in Cavan with brothers Moses.

One was born in 1876, with parents James Roundtree and Letitia Little. This family seems to have moved 'en bloc' to Texas, initially, by 1880.

The other Letitia is registered on the Irish birth records as Leticha Rountry, born 23rd. January, 1867, in Tullyvin, Co. Cavan, with parents Richard Rountry and Mary Little.

This information is on the LDS website. As James and Richard were brothers it seems likely Letitia and Mary Littles were sisters.

Richard and James' parents were William Rountree and Margaret Trainor. William's parents were Charles Rountree and Bettie Ebbett.

This Charles' parents were Charles Rountree, born about 1710 in Co. Armagh (almost certainly in the townland of Mulladry), and Mollie Coleman.

All this information is on the Charles Rountree family tree produced in 1890 by Walter Rountree.

You mentioned Mervyn Rountree. Well, he descends from Charles Rountree and Bettie Ebbett and his DNA is an almost exact match to mine.

Have you not got a copy of the Charles Rountree tree?

Fred

Thank you so much for writing.

My grandmother was born in 1867.I have my grandmother's confirmation card, but it is old and hard to read. She met her husband William Wolf when his mother Ellizabeth Little Wolf took him to Ireland as a young man. He kept a journal which I have. In it he talks about going to see the "Widow Roundtree" his mother's cousin.

Our family legend says that Letitia's brother Moses came to the United States to visit her, but didn't like it here. Before leaving he gave her a gold pocket watch. I have the watch.

I believe my grandmother had the midddle name Florence.

Later, two of her sisters came over and married two brothers named Hall. One wrote a book about traveling the the far east. I also have this book.

I would appreciate any information that you could give me.
jwaring05
I was interested to find your posting. I had a grandmother Letitia Roundtree who immigrated here in the late 1800s. She had a brother Moses. We thought with such an unusual name they would be easy to trace. Not so. You are welcom to look at my family tree to see how far I got.
There is also an ancestry member Mervyn Roundtree that has some family history, but he couldn't connect the details of my tree.
As for DNA testing, since it was a grandmother, and I am a female I don't think we could help. I have the announcement of their marriage but not the certificate. I have quite a bit of detail and am happy to share if you'd like anything. No doubt you already have the photograph of Edward Noel.

Hi, this is a little late and not directly related to your query, but...

In doing research on my own family I've pulled a copy of the wedding certificate for one Emily Maria Rountree, daughter of William Rountree and Mary Cole, born in Ireland, to Edward Milligan (from Scotland) in Wellington NZ 9 November 1881. Could this be the Emily you mention? Still yet to flesh out the detail, but Emily and William had at least two children - Ethel Mary Milligan and Edward Noel Milligan, the latter notably became one of WWI's "ANZACs".
Yes, I've seen that, too. I believe it started from the first volume of Folks Huxford's Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, which said that he married Nancy Hendley on "March 6, 1811, in Pulaski County," and people took it to be a God's honest fact. Granted this was way before the internet; so, a lot of the information was hard to verify without living in Pulaski County. That volume also said that all of his children was sired through Nancy Hendley.

My wife descends from Weston Rountree. Currently, I'm looking at James's father, William, and have found a few records from Burke County, Georgia involving land.

Thank you so much for you reply. I've come across so many Family Trees that have posted Nancy Hendley as the mother of all his children and have posted the marriage record along with them. My husband descends from Harriet Rountree.

That has been my conclusion with the marriage record in Pulaski Co., 1820 census, and seeing as there is a six year gap between the birth of Henrietta Rountree (May 1817) and James Rountree Jr. (Dec 1823). James is also born 9 months after James's marriage with Nancy. I don't know who James Sr. was married to first.

My greatgrandpa was named William, middle name may be Ellic(?). I also believe he had a brother named Barton and possibly 1 more sibling, i can't recall.
Whatever happened, it was enough for her to change all their names back to Cox. She later remarried a Pitman.
thanks!

Gary, Which child do you descend from of John? I have the following listed in my data: Willie J.,Walter C., Nancy May, and Mary Ester. I just recently was informed of his first wife's name. Would like to exchange data if we do connect, I don't know the reason for the end but will see if I can find out from some other contacts.
