Hi. I live in England ( well actually The Isle of Man which is a separate country technically ). It's a funny thing about the Routledge's we are not very inventive with first names. Perhaps because our surname is so complicated. Anyway, we come from a valley on the borders English side, though that's pretty meaningless really. We split pretty much three ways, ( after the Union of Scotland and England ) to the NE of England, Newcastle , the NW , Liverpool, and probably some to London. Not sure how they emigrated to the American colonies - probably in several periods, via Ireland as Rutledges ( having been relocated there as colonists ) and later from Liverpool as Routledges in the twenties - my grandad paid for some of the widows of family women whose husbands had died in the Great War to go to America to start new lives. (many of the the young men of Liverpool having died in Northern France mostly in 1916 ). We are still an exceptionally close and proud family here in the NW of England, and very aware of our history. P

Routledges in Cumberland (Cumbri)

Routledges in Cumbria are like Smiths in anywhere. The Routledges came Raping and Pillaging from Scotland way back.
I a am a Routledge desendant. My Granfather was John Routledge Born 1866 Died 1939. He married a Sarah Ann Parker, she was born in 1862 and died in 1934. Their Children were: Janie, Sarah, Mary Dawson (my mother) and John, I believe there was another daughter who died early in life. They lived in Williamsons Lane, Hensingham, Whitehaven. I have tried to search earlier family without success. Is there anyone out there who can help?

We have a Thomas Routledge born 1838 Crathorne, he married an Elizabeth Thompson, had a number of children. After her death approx 1877, he married a Jane Coatsworth, & had more children.
Could this Thomas be a son or grandson of the family you are researching. I have lots more on his family & though not one of my direct relatives, I am in contact with his great grandaughter, who still lives in the area.
Bye Hilary.

Re: Isaac Routledge - Cumberland

Hi, just found your message from 2004! I live in Hamilton, Victoria,Australia. I am descended from Routledges and Pearsons. Info I have so far (which is probably what you have) John and Elizabeth Routledge- john died before sept quarter 1837 (before free bmd index started) in Cumberland and was born there. He was dead before 1841 census. His wife Elizabeth (not sure of surname so far cannot find marriage) lived in 1841 census in Wigton. She born Cumberland too - in census she is 55 years, occupation Charwoman, and her kids Jane 20years(actually christened in 1818 in Bromfield, near wigton & on IGI index on family search), Ann 20years (christened 1821 in Bromfield) and Isaac 15 years (christened 1823 in Bromfield). Ann and Jane occupations listed as Straw Bonnet Makers and Isaac was a shoemaker. Not sure when Elizabeth died. Not sure who married Jane. I know of Isaac and he is buried in Hamilton Cemetary and still has a tombstone there, buried with wife and a couple of kids (they had lots of kids). He is still a bootmaker as I have found him in the old electoral roles in the Hamilton History Centre. My grandmother Daisy Hill (nee Jennings) said the Routledges were her cousins and were well off, but she didn't have much to do with them.

William and Ann yes were married as you know in 1844 in Wigton. Their kids - Elizabeth Pearson (b.1848 in Oldham below town, Lancashire, uk) and Joseph Pearson (b.1851 in Oldham below town). William and Ann moved to Manchester area before immigrating. William was a coalminer in the early days before immigrating. I always knew they immigrated but was unsure where as cannot find them. Do you know where to in Australia??????? Daughter Elizabeth moved to Hamilton and married William Holden and had lots of kids too. They also are buried in Hamilton Cemetary but no tombstones left. I have lots of info on them and two old photos - one of them with some kids in their house I think somewhere in Lonsdale street?? And one of a son and his wife. Son Joseph was a hairdresser. He stayed in Manchester, then later moved to Northern Ireland where he married a Widow Mary Esdale/Easdale (nee Gillespie) and had 5 kids - Elizabeth, Margaret, and Williamina, then moved to Scotland (for some reason) had William in 1888 then 1889 moved to Manchester and had son Isaac. Found them in 1891 census, found Joseph in directory for Manchester in1896 then nothing. So think they immigrated but not sure where. Daughter Elizabeth stayed in Lanchashire and married first Edwin English (who died 1916/7) and had five kids, and then married my great grandfather William Thomas Jennings in Liverpool in 1820. Their daughter Daisy Jennings born 1821 was my grandmother. She married a Hill and later moved to Terang in Australia in the fifties.

I think John and Elizabeth (betty) had another son Robert Routledge who was christened on 10/2/1821 in Bromfield, Cumberland (the same day as daughter Ann), but as he is not listed in the 1841 census I shall I have to keep looking to see if he died or moved out. Todays next job.

I have more info on Isaac and jessie's trees downwards and William and Elizabeth Holden's trees downward if you want it. Let me know. There is an interesting site I just discovered called historicaldirectories.org. It has directories from different decades in England and Wales, such as trades in towns, etc. Check it out and see if you find anything useful.

Belinda Hill.

I have an Elizabeth (born 1853), daughter of John and Agnes (Bell) in Hawick, (Scotland 1881 Census). It seems as though she was married to a "Pickering" at that time - no husband on the census, but a child (Lillian) I have not been able to confirm this by another source. No Thomas's in this large family. Carlisle seems to be where marriages or births were registered.

Hello,

My Rutledge line started out as Routledge in England. I'm not descended from the Rutledges that came to America via Ireland. The spelling changed when William's grandson John, moved south and no doubt was surrounded by "Rutledges", so succombed to the "correct" spelling of the territory. :-]

According to many Family Trees on Ancestry, our William (son of Thomas) came over from Kirkenlin, Cumbria, England sometime before 1680, as his son John was born in Pennsylvania at that time. Interestingly, Kirkenlin doesn't seem to exist anywhere but on Ancestry... I hope we are not all pooling our ignorance--just because one Tree says it, that means it is true for mine as well...

Alas, just wondering if anyone has any light to shed about this William, this town, etc.

Thanks, Dori Lloyd :-]

My grandfather, William Lynn Routledge, was also born in Carlisle, Cumbria, but in 1888, son of Mary Alice Lynn and John Routledge. He came to America (Ohio) when he was 21, telling his mother if he liked it he was going to stay. He stayed and married a Mary Jane Cottrell (nee Johns) who was born in Wales but met him in Ohio. I haven't found out much about the rest of his family members, siblings etc. but the family had a bakery on the corner of Brooke Street (I can't read the cross street on the photograph) not too far from St Mary's Church, I think. Wherever they lived you can see the Castle in the background on a picture of their street. My father took the pictures when he was there during WWII and a friend of mine visited the bakery, taking a picture of it, about 11 years ago. I think Mary Alice died and John remarried (? ) a Nellie/Nettie Barstow/Barlow or something close to that. The bakery obviously continued and they had possibly 3 sons, one being named Gordon. I have been told of another Routledge bakery at another location but not sure how, or if, this even fits into my family. I would be overjoyed if anyone recognized any of this information. If I can be of help to anyone researching Routledges I will be happy to.
