Col. Robert Rowan - NC - parents??

Who were his parents?? Seem strange to me after years of research no one has his parents or exact birth date. I have the family of his uncle Gov. Matthew Rowan, as well as Matthew's siblings and parents. None of them list a son Robert b: abt 1738 in NC. Something doesn't seem right, and wonder if Matthew is really the right family. Matthew's family immigrated from County Down, Ireland. It is guessed they arrived sometime in early 1720s, but no exact date has been found. Matthew first appears in records in 1726 in NC. Robert is assumed to have been born in 1738 as his death in Oct 1798 list his age as 60.

Anyone had any luck with this line???
That's great ! Are your Griffins also from Mayo? If so, would you mind sharing some information with my about Mary's family? Her parents names or if she had any brothers? I am 98% sure my Ronan family comes from W. Cork. My seach for my Great Grandmother Anna Griffin Mulvaney is still very murky ( my Grans married Pops, the grandson of Anna Ronan McNamara.). My heart tells me Kerry or Tipperary or possibly Galway for her origin but my first inclination was Mayo and it keeps popping up when researching surnames associated with this branch I've found in NYC to their lives in Ireland.
For the longest time, I thought the Mary Byrnes listed as Grans Godmother on her baptismal from St.Patrick's Cathedral in 1915 could be a married sister or a cousin from her Mother's side (The names given on Anna's death record are most likely unreliable ). Turns out Mary Byrnes maiden was Griffin, her father was a George (conflicting origin NY or Ireland). Another thing that struck me was the name Veronica. Its not exactly a common Irish name and Mary's sister Martha was given it as a middle name.
Connecting is a long shot.but its better to take the shot even if nothing pans out, right?

Danielle

Hi Peter, I've been looking at Australian Rowans for many years - my wife's mother's maiden name was Rowan. We have much information on her line back to Cappawhite, County Tipperary - this Rowan family arrived in Melbourne in the 1850s. Some of that family later moved to Sydney. Let me have a little more information about your Rowans and I'll see if they can be matched up with our lot. Regards, John Wilson.
I don't believe I have a connection to your family.Though both names are on my Mother's side.I found my Ronan family on the 1880 census under Rowan, I am going to suggest trying that spelling. If you haven't checked out irishgenealogy.ie , you should Ronan and its variant spellings are very strongly tied to Cork. Mine are from the west. The Griffin name is said to have originated in Kerry you'll find records for that county as well.

Good luck, Danielle

Hello,I am researching the Rowan side of my family. Most were from Florida, Chattahoochee area. My Granfather was Herman Colonel Rowan, he had 6 siblings and his mothers name was Susie Rowan. On the 1930 census it only listed Susie as the head of household and the children.
Does any of this seem to match?

Thanks,
Carrie Jean Cassou - Rowan

Just got a bunch of birth certificates from the UK tonight and apparently on a couple of them I got the wrong parents. The good news for you is that one of the ones I got wrong is John Rowan, son of Patrick Rowan and Mary Griffin, born 25 Jan 1863. Place of birth is listed as "Dawgreen Dewsbury" and Patrick's occupation is listed as "Hawker of Pots". If you want a scanned copy, just send me a PM.

Irish Rowans Arr. 1850 in PA and NY

I am researching my Rowan ancestors. This is what I have learned so far:

Peter Rowan was borne (his father possibly named Andrew) abt. 1832 in Ballintemple, Erregal, County Derry, NI and arrived in NY (or Philadelphia) in 1850. Peter's two older sisters Martha (who married James Breen) and Bridget (a spinster) both settled in NY City. Peter was an iron worker (puddler) who moved from one iron town to another following John Fritz (a preeminent early iron magnate) wherever Fritz built iron works. He is first found in Phoenixville, PA where he married Catherine Carville (b.1832) in 1852 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Around 1853 he moved to Johnstown (Millville) PA where worked at the Cambria Iron works. In the fall of 1864 he moved his family to South Bethlehem, PA where he settled for the rest of his life working at Bethlehem Iron (then Steel). He also served in the early days of the Civil War under Colonel Linton. He and Catherine along with son William, all died in March 1906 likely from a TB outbreak, but said to be pneumonia. Peter and Catherine had the following children:

Martha (Mattie) b. 1854 in Johnstown, PA. She married Peter Hall in 1883 and had four girls (Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth and Martha).

Andrew b. 1857 in Johnstown, PA. He married Annie Nolan in 1877 and they had a son Peter (1878-1962) who is my great-grandfather.

William Joseph b. 1859 in Johnstown, PA and died in 1906 (never married)

Mary b. 1861 in Johnstown, PA and remained unmarried.

Dominic b. 1864 in Johnstown, PA and remained unmarried

Dennis b. 1866 in South Bethlehem, PA and died in 1873

Thomas b. 1870 in South Bethlehem, PA and died in 1945. He married Jennie Devinney and had 3 children (Francis 1893-1905, William b. 1896 and Joseph b. 1897, who were parted out after the death of Jennie around 1898).

Peter Breen b. 1872 in South Bethlehem, PA and died in a fire in 1901. He never married.
[According to the census, Catherine had 9 children, so one is not accounted for above and may have died in infancy.]

I am particularly interested in Andrew who is my linage. I have located him (with surname spelled Rowand) in the 1880 census living with his wife Annie and his son Peter in Braddock, PA. I have been unsuccessful after much research on Ancestry.com and elsewhere locating any sources of information on Andrew, or Annie after 1880 (other than Andrew's enlistment in the Spanish American War in 1898). I am able to find his son Peter as an adult in the 1900 census (and thereafter). This is why I'm hoping by posting here that someone might be able to help remove this road block on Andrew's life. The only other information that I have is from his father Peter's obituary which says that Andrew and his brother Dominic residing "in the West" in 1906, but I have no idea what the "in the West" might mean-western PA,mid-west or western US. I'd also be interested in any additional information on any other's listed above. If anyone is interested in this line of Rowans, I have a wealth of newspaper clippings of marriages and deaths that I am willing to share. Thomas Rowan is the most prominent of this line having served on the first Bethlehem City Council and also the school board.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jim Rowan
Well, Hello, Rodney! Glad to find a cousin! And I'm very glad to share information. Your Frances Josephine Rowan married Lyman H. Scott twice -- isn't that right? Once in 1922 and again in 1935? I do not have any other information on the Scotts and would welcome adding more in that line to the tree. What information might I help you with? I have some info on the James R. Rowan who married Ellen Sweeney (mentioned in my earlier post) -- then a good bit of info on their children: Martha, James R. (the one who married Sophie described in my earlier post), William (the father of your Frances; William is also my husband's line), Mary, Elizabeth "Lillie," and Anthony. Then info that you likely have, too, on William and his wife, Katherine Wallstein -- and then some info on Katherine's ancestry. Thanks so much for replying! Good hearing from you!
My Patrick came from Mayo County, as documented in the birth certificate of William H Rowan (4 Jul 1873). Sarah died in Liverpool of Uterine Cancer in 1878 and the family came to the US in the early 1880s (I think on separate trips). I have more birth certificates coming from the UK on the Rowan family members in Dewsbury, which I am hoping match the family that I have found in the 1861 Census around the Batley Carr area.

Yes, it's certainly possible that they are related to the other Rowans in Dewsbury. I've found two familes who seem to have come to Dewsbury sometime near 1850 -- Dominick Rowan and Patrick Rowan. Dominick came first. My family is Patrick's. I've been trying for years to establish any kind of connection between these two men. Do you have any idea where in Ireland your Patrick may have come from? Look forward to hearing from you!

Hello, after doing years of research it looks like I have Rowan family members that were also born in the Dewsbury area. However, my side has a different patriarch and matriarch. Patrick Rowan and Sarah Gavin came to Dewsbury around 1860/1861. They are in the Census, but have a daughter listed as born 1860 in Ireland. Wondering if they were part of a family migration from Ireland to the Dewsbury area?

Just been following up as news media have contacted us about one of Patrick's Great grandchildren Albert John Schorer who had his grave desecrated at Benghazi War Cemetery in Libya in March 2012, so I thought I'd upload a photo of Albert and ended up on this page. There has been a few stories about him in the news
Hello,

KIDDER is my main research of 20 yrs. I have my great-grandfather, George "Sanford" KIDDER, b1870 in Princeton, Maine, near Calais, Maine. He was the son of Joseph KIDDER and Clarissa WILKINS. He had 5 younger siblings, and I have information on the 3 brothers, and have found descendants of them. But, I've had trouble finding information on their 3 sisters.

The youngest sister was Marian "Aurelia" KIDDER, b~1882 in Princeton, ME. In 1901 in Houlton, Maine, she married John Howard HARRIS. He had been born in 1876 in York County, New Brunswick, and was one of 3 sons of John HARRIS and Fannie ROWAN / ROANS / ROLLINS (sp?).

With the help of researchers, I found out that Fannie was born in New Brunswick in 1842, and her parents were William ROWAN / ROANS and Mary McLEAN. William had been born in ~1794 in England. I don't yet know when William arrived in Canada, and I'm curious about that. William and Mary ROWANS (sp?) seem to have had 9 children born during 1830's and 1840's. And probably all in York County, New Brunswick.

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(I've been told that the old records in New Brunswick have at least 6, different spellings of the surname.)

My mother and uncles are all now decessed. I have one sister Mary. Joseph, their son, had six children and lived in southern New Jersey. James and Francis were childless.
Also, I hae a hand drawn family tree, I believer from my Uncle Jim, showing that Bridget had eight syblings and I know tha all the sisters except Winifred came to the US. Never knew any of the brothers. Have some info on a niece of Joseph, Dot Hall, who still lives near Philly.
Finally, from the tree, Bridget's parents are shown as James Moloney--not Maloney--and Bridget Ryan.
Lastly

This is exciting!I have been trying to make sense of the family history for some time but I must admit I have not had the time this year as much as I would like.
My grandfather Albert Schorer ( though I now believe his father was a convict with the surname Schora) came from Wandering/Toodyay. His mother ( Sarah) was the daughter of Charoltte Mary Waters ( daughter of Thomas W and Sarah Price) who married Patrick Roan ( Rowan). Patrick's name changes have led me a merry dance - his marriage certificate is in the name Roar.
I understand the history of the Waters is also very muddied. My grandfather was researching that family when he passed away and I have seen some of his notes which would suggest Thomas Waters' father line of
heritage is not clear. I have a small picture of Thomas and Sarah.
I would welcome any help you may be able to give me or to put me on the right path. If I have any thing of benefit for you please ask.
I live in Victoria, Australia

Donna, I know that my Rowans had a connection to the Enyarts, but can't find any real proof. On the other hand, I haven't looked for a long long time. And, I am sure that we have communicated before. It's been while. :-) I hit my Rowan brick wall in Pennsylvania, and don't see ever getting over it.

Ms. Hall,
I am writing a history of the Union Cemetery in Symmes Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. The Enyarts are a significant family in the cemetery, and a road in the area is named for them. Samuel and Anna are buried in the cemetery as are other members of the family. I would appreciate any information you have on the Enyart family, such as their country of origin and from where they immigrated to Ohio from. Also, their religion is of interest, as the cemetery was associated with a church, though not owned by the church. I can send photos of the tombstones if you would like.
Thanks,
Bill Stewart
Denton, Texas
wks41@verizon.net
