Rowlands from Tacoma, Pierce County, WA

Hello -- I am researching my Arnold extended family who lived in Brown County, Illinois and moved to Tacoma in the mid 1920's. Here are the specifics: Douglas Allen Arnold, born 9 Oct 1876 in Brown County, Illinois, son of Alcaster & Angeline (Cox) Arnold. Alcaster and Angeline both died before 1900. The next I find Douglas is his marriage to Mamie Kreamer in Seattle in 1912. He also lived in Skagit County and was a meat cutter / butcher by profession. He is listed with Mamie and her children in census and directories until 1920. Mamie died in 1960 in Washington and went by the Rowland name & her obituary does not mention the years she was married to Douglas A. Arnold. One of Mamie's sons was also a butcher.

In 1925 & 1928 Douglas is moving into Canada with his wife (another widow with two children) Veda Popham Tully. He is with her through 1939 where they are in Oregon. In 1971 I find Veda's death record in Oregon. However, she's listed as Veda Tully and not Arnold.

First, I'd like to find Douglas' death records. I've thoroughly searched (I think) Washington and haven't found anything more on him. He appears to have lived in Tacoma, working (owning?) a meat market. His second wife, Veda, had ties in Canada, perhaps he died there?

Any thoughts, suggestions, information would be most welcome.

Thank you in advance! Sue suemanz.graham@comcast.net

Betsey Saunders Rowland, wife of Charles Rowland -- Rensselaer County, New York

Betsey Rowland, wife of Charles Rowland, is mentioned as a "sister" of Margaret Saunders, of Lansingburgh, Rensselaer County New York.

Margaret Saunders made her will 7 March 1833, probated on 21 November 1833 (Rensselaer Wills, v. 12, p. 387) naming her daughter, Margaret E.; sisters, Mrs. Janette Atwood, Eliza Armstrong and Betsey, wife of Charles Rowland. She made a bequeath to the American Bible Society; named her executor:Elisha Alvord; witnesses to will were William F. Atwood and E. W. Walbridge.

Find A Grave memorial no. 44869483, Margaret Saunders d 12 September 1833, bd Old Lansingburgh Cemetery, lansingburgh, Rensselaer Co, New York.

Also in Old Lansingburgh Cemetery is Elizabeth Rowland d 11 February 1837, Find A Grave memorial no. 44869474. Believe this to be sister Betsey Rowland, wife of Charles Rowland.

Would like to confirm the identity of Elizabeth Rowland and to know vital statistics for Charles Rowland and his parentage. He may be buried in Old Langsingburgh Cemetery without stone? No entry for Charles has been found in the Find A Grave website nor the online Interments in Rensselaer County Cemeteries.

Will welcome any information and assistance in further identifying these Saunders and Rowland families.

Ann, I am Robert McMenamin. Shirley Rowland and i were married in 1954. I wanted to contact you about the Rowland family. Checking the Census Records on ancestry, I have found a Nathan Rowland in the 49th Tennessee Infantry during the civil War. Can you confirm or dispute that? That is the question i have, but also wanted to contact you. Shirley received your letter at Christmas, but hasn't had an opportunity to reply yet. She's very busy helping our youngest son with his Apple computer business. If you want to contact us on the internet, Shirley is Shirley@mac8.com. Mine is Robert@mac8.com. Hope to hear from you. Bob

There's a lot of info out there on Gasper Roland's descendants, but I really question the accuracy of the widespread accepted "fact" that his parents were John Rowland and Esther Falla. John Rowland was reportedly born in England and though I see his date of death I never see a place of death. Esther Falla was reportedly born in Belgium and died in England. Obviously it is very POSSIBLE that they had a son born in Germany. But it is not EVIDENT to me. Is there any info out there, such as birth or baptismal records from the Rhineland-Palatinate? I WANT them to be his parents, cuz then I can trace my ancestry way back to the twelfth century. Can anyone help?

Hi Carole,

Uncle George lived in northern Virginia at the time he died in 1967, in the Oakton/Fairfax area. Some of the family is still up there around Manassas.

Finding information for his first wife, Maude Ellen Shetley, is tough. George had a sister named Maude Lindsay Roland. This Maude married Americas Shetley, the brother of Maude Ellen Shetley. So you have a Maude Ellen Shetley Roland and a Maude Lindsay Roland Shetley who were double sisters-in-law and born close to the same time.

Maude Roland Shetley (George's sister, not his wife) died in 1991 in Union, South Carolina.

I only just managed to find Maude Shetley Rowland's (George's wife) death date and burial place. She died on December 18, 1960 and is buried with Uncle George at Fairfax Memorial Park. We have home video footage of her from about the summer of 1960 from a family visit to Manassas.

Elizabeth Rowland of Rensselaer Co New York ---wife John Taylor/Tyler?

Any one searching the Rowland/Taylor or Rowland/Tyler familes of Pittstown area of Rensselaer County New York??

Perhaps John Taylor (or Tyler) who married Elizabeth Rowland in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co New York?

The following information is all that I have:

Elizabeth Rowland b 12 Jun 1816, d 26 Jan 1897, Rensselaer Co, buried in Middletown Cemetery, Pittstown, Rensselaer Co. The cemetery record online (Interments in Rensselaer County Cemeteries) has note that she is wife of John Taylor/Tyler. Did not find a cemetery entry for John Taylor or John Tyler that fits.

Have not been able to find this couple (John and Elizabeth Taylor/Tyler) in the 1850-80 census; but have found an Elizabeth/Eliza Tyler b ca 1817 residing in Pittstown area in 1850, 1870, 1880 census who is wife of JAMES TYLER.

Perhaps? the cemetery transcription is in error and husband is James?

Would appreciate any assistance on this couple to identify proper surnames and parents.

As one line in the Wiki reports;

"Many Americans claim descent from Pocahontas through her son Thomas Rolfe, his daughter Jane, and his grandson John Bolling"

There might well have been a marriage between a Rowland and a descendent of Thomas Rolfe, etc.

But you being of a Alabama Rowland family, perhaps you are related to my line, who also claim relationship to the Cherokee tribe via a marriage to a Cherokee woman to a Burlison/Burleson. The Burleson and Rowland family later
mixed and thus the Native American claims.

Regards,
Ronald L. Hughes

I'm struggling with the same set of problems. I find Elisia Russell (1590-1624) listed also as mother to Elizabeth Rowland (father John Rowland). Sometimes she is shown as Elizabeth's mother, and Luke Billington (1590-1623), confusingly, is shown as Elizabeth's father. The list of children of Elizabeth Rowland and William Thornton is also highly variable; lists often include Luke b 1642 (suggests Elizabeth b earlier than 1647 and marr to Wm Thornton also earlier than 1646); Wm 1649; Francis 1651; Rowland 1654. Sometimes one Rowland is b 1647, d 1648, and another Rowland appears 1653-1701. Excluding ridiculous suggestions, of which there are several, one also sees: Edward 1646, Ann 1648, Matthew 1650, Henry 1646, Esther 1655. Is there any even semi-authoritative source for birthplaces of children, or any other respectable way to sort out families? And is there any reason for Elisia Russell and Luke Billington to enter into the discussion?

Hello All. Is there anyone here that is related to a Rowland by at least their grandparents? My maternal grandmother was a Rowland. She was born in Montana as her father, Robert Roy Rowland came to Montana with his two older brothers, from Missouri about 1900. I have accurate info on my Rowlands back several generations, but I am focusing on, back to Frederick Rowland (ggggrandfather)who was born in 1805 Chatham Co., Missouri. He had a lot of kids, so there must be some fairly close relatives out there! He came to Missouri via a few years in Tennessee abt 1829. His parents and a few of his brother's came also. My line from Frederick is George H Rowland, Robert Roy Rowland, Helene Roberta Rowland. I am looking for living cousins. Thanks, Lisa

I have recently made contact with some of my cousins. If you go to my facebook page you will see some of them listed as "friends". I haven't had the time yet to do what I would like to do re family history. My plan is to post some of the photos I have of FC and the places he served as missionary. I never remember meeting any of his brothers, but I think most of them were Baptist preachers like he was. The church he served during the fifties is still operating. It's called the Spring River Indian Baptist Church (near Quapaw-Miami Oklahoma). The site in northwestern New Mexico where he ran a mission for the Navahos was called the "Tinian" mission. It's 30 miles west of Cuba New Mexico, but I haven't been able to find anything about it on the web. All of FC's sons are gone, William, Harvey (my dad), Kenneth and Rudet. The people on my facebook page are their children.

Minnie M. Rowland 1886--Rensselaer County, New York

Am looking for parents of Minnie M. Rowland, born 1885-1886 in Rensselaer County, New York, most likely in Pittstown.

She is enumerated in the 1900 Rensselaer Co New York census at Pittstown with William H. Rowland and wife, Mary F. Tilley, as their "niece". She is also as "niece" in their household in the 1905 New York State Census, Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY.

The cemetery records for Warren Cemetery, Pittstown, NY shows the following:
Minnie Rowland b 11 May 1885, died 4 Dec 1945, wife of Walter Brainard and Cecil LeBarron; her mother as Lillian File and father as John C. Rowland. The transcription notes Minnie was buried on 7 Dec 1945 and source of this information was "Mable Wallace Hewitt, her records"

Buried in the same Warren Cemetery is John C. Rowland (1856-1932), wife Libby (Elizabeth) Stearns and Libby Stearns (1882-1932). The 1900 census indicates that John and Elizabeth Stearns have been married about one year (married about 1899); they are known to have one child, Mabel J. Rowland, born ca 1901.

Would like to exchange information to confirm that this John C. Rowland was married first to Lillian File and that they were the parents of Minnie M. Rowland (1885-1945).

Any help on this family will be greatly appreciated.

Brenda,
I have pdf files containing the DAR application of Ruby Nash as well as her text transcription from the original 1833 handwritten Rev War Pension Application of James Rowland of McNairy County, TN. If you will contact me with you email address, I will be happy to reply with these files as email attachments. However, Brenda, based upon your description of your Rowland ancestors, I am pesimestic regarding your connection here. If you will do a search of the Ancestry.com Public Member Trees for Stephen Rowland who was born in 1790 you will get hits on about 75 different trees matching this search. There are at least two different Stephen Rowlands whose owners of these trees have gotten confused and mixed up. One of these Stephen Rowlands (my line) married Sarah McHughs (aka. Sallie McKew) on Oct 12, 1818 in Lawrence County, TN. The marriage records in Lawrence County lists her as "Sallie McKew". (Note that when you pronounce McKew and McHughs they sound identical). I have proven that the records clerk at the Lawrence County courthouse just misspelled her name and should have spelled it McHughs. A search of the State of Tennessee 1818 male voter census for Lawrence County did not turn up any McKews but did lists 3 different McHughs including a Charles McHughs who was the bondsman for Stephen and Sarah marriage bond. Also, the 1820 census turned up several McHughs but no McKews.

The second Stephen Rowland was a "Stephen M. Rowland" who married Sarah Minerva Stampley in Jackson, Mississippi on August 26, 1818. He apparently lived out his life and died in Mississippe but many of his researcher have assumed that the Stephen Rowland they found living in Newton County, AR in the 1850 census was their Stephen....that is just not true. The Stephen Rowland living in Newton County, AR in 1850 was still alive in the 1860 census. In 1850 he was living next door to my gg-grandfather William Riley Seaboalt who was married to Stephen's daugher Sarah Jane Rowland (My gg-grandmother). Information passed down by my maternal grandmother had it that Stephen Rowland's daughter Rebecca (who was enumerated in his household in the 1850 Census) married William "Bud" Owen, the brother of my paternal great-grandfather Richard Carol Owen. Stephen Rowland also had a son John Rowland living with him in 1850. This John Rowland married Nancy Owen, sister of William "Bud" Owen. John and Nancy had a daughter they named Betty who was a cousin to both of my grandmothers on opposite sides of my family. Betty Rowland married Harlan Cook and lived in Eufaula, OK. She used to come to Ellis County in Texas and would visit and stat at both of my grandmother's homes and both grandmothers called her "Cousin Betty". I have photos of Betty including her husband and daughters that were sent to my grandmother. I mention all of this to let you know that my connection on Stephen Rowland is well based and factual. I have traced all of the known children of Stephen Rowland though all the census years while they were living and come up with a pretty good conclusion on when and where they were born enabling me to verify the places I found Stephen Rowland in other primary source documents like census, land and tax records. We know that after marrying Sarah McHughs in Lawrence County, TN in 1818, he was enumerated there in the 1820 census. He and James Rowland (his assumed father) were both awarded adjacent land grants in McNairy County, TN on the same date in Sept 1826 (I have copy of these documents). Later, both Stephen and James were enumerated on adjacent lines in the 1830 Census for McNairy County. James Rowland was living in McNairy County in 1833 when he made his pension application and was still there in the 1840 census but without Stephen. Tishomingo County in Mississippi was created from Choctaw Indian lands after their removal to Oklahoma in 1832. A corner of Tishomingo County, MS touches a corner of McNairy County in Tennessee. So, Stephen did not have far to move when he claimed land in Tishomingo Coutny that was vacated by the Choctaw Indians. Between about 1835 and 1844 he appears on several tax rolls as well as in the 1840 US Census. He is widowed in 1850 with a 5 year old daughter Martha born in AR. This indicates that he moved to AR about 1844 and his wife Sarah died about 1845 after giving birth to Martha. From later census records putting it all together, we know that Sarah Jane was born 1829 in McNairy County, TN, son John was born Tishomingo County, MS as was his daughter Rebecca. Some people who did not do their research have assumed that Stephen was the son of George Washington Rowland who died in Buffalo, Newton County Ar in 1844. Just not true. Also, true researcher of That George Rowland have identified all of his children and there was no child named Stephen. Hope this will help any of the Roland researcher out there to get their lines straight. I have much more documentation proof of my above statements
wdgorman@verizon.net

Was "googling" this afternoon and saw your post about Thomas Rowland. Unfortunately I can't help you but would be very interested in info that you have pertaining to ancestors of Jacob Garber Rowland. He is my 2nd great grandfather. I show Thomas to be his father but that is all that I have. If I have any info that would help pertaining to Jacob, let me know. My email is eaperry@cox.net.
