Help with Rowlandson Tree

Hi,

I'm tracing my Rowlandson tree back. I've managed to get it back to 1802/03 with John Rowlandson but i'm hitting a major brick wall now. I can't seem to work out who his parents were. I' have a few potentials - Richard and margaret. Peter and Jane and also John and Margaret. If any fellow Rowlandsons out there can look at my tree and give me a hint I will be most grateful.

Cheers
Robert

The surname Rowlandson

In 1535, there were 13 Rowlandsons allocated seats in Crosthwaite Chapel, 5 miles W of Kendal (British History Online / Crosthwaite). They were John, Richard, Edward, William and their wives at Mosside, James and wife at Broadoak, Wm and wife at Townyeat and widow Rowlandson at Huberstyhead. The earliest recorded baptisms (Familysearch) are Myles 1517 and Edward 1518 son of William. So clearly the name was in use in the late 15th century around Crosthwaite. There are 2 possibilities for the origin of the name. It probably developed from the Christian name Rowland, just as Johnson, Thomson etc; there is a Rowland Rowlandson living in Kendal in the early 16th century, so the Christian name was in use there. The other slight possibility is that it developed from a place name. There is a hamlet quite close to Mosside and Broadoak called Row; so the name could have developed from Row to Rowland to Rowlandson during the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, there are over 100 Rowlandson baptisms recorded in Crosthwaite and many more in Kendal. Before 1600, 90% of the Rowlandson baptisms in England (Familysearch), were around Kendal, indicating that the name almost certainly originated there.

The name is more likely to come from the Christian name Rowland. There are many more Rowlands around Kendal before 1550: Rowland Atkinson, Benson, Helme, Taylor etc, so the name was widely used. There was a William Roulandson recorded in Cumbria in 1332.

I am looking for more information for both Henry Morgan Rowlandson & Emily Sarah Humphries.
I have their marriage listed as 1830 in Saint Katherine Creechurch, London, London, England. After this, it seems that they moved to Madras, India, and had at least one son (Arthur Hodgson Rowlandson). Henry Morgan Rowlandson is listed as an attorney in Madras in 1833.
Arthur Hodgson Rowlandson immigrated to Victoria, Australia, where he married Susan Sophia Black and had a number of children, including Alfred Cecil Rowlandson, the pioneer publisher.
Would anyone have any more information on Henry or Emily's families? Or how many children they had in India?
Anther "son" is listed in 1837 (Arthur Hodgson was born around 1833).
This is Mary White Rowlandson's daughter that was shot, in Mary's arms, when her garrison was taken by Indians (in Lancaster). According to Mary's writings, the child survived for several days (two weeks?) and was burried by the Indians. Sarah was the youngest of three children; Joseph, Mary, and Sarah.

My father discovered a few years ago that Mary and her children are in our family line. Thank you for posting about this grave site. My father may want to visit it.

My father, Howard Ford, has been researching our family history for several years. I don't know if he or I can answer your question, but he found that the Rowlandson family is in our line through William Ford. I recall him telling me about Mary White Rowlandson, and her writings, as well as Thankful Rowlandson. My father may have some additional information about Rowlandson family in Connecticut as I think he has traced the family back to England.

A Rowlandson - Beckley Mystery

An entry in the Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, 1636-1776, p. 211 contains an entry that may hold a clue to the identity of Hannah, the wife of Zebedee Beckley (1734-1776), of Wethersfield, Conn. Hannah's maiden name is not contained in Sheppard's Beckley Genealogy (1948).

The entry under consideration pertains to a petition lodged against "Abraham Harriss, of Weathersfield" by "Joseph Roulandson" a minor under 21 who presented a petition through his guardian, Zebedee Beckley, also of Wethersfield. Joseph was joined in this action by his sister, Hannah, also a minor, who petitioned through her guardian, Caleb Galpin of Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., Mass.

A little research into the Rowlandsons reveals that Joseph and Hannah were the orphaned children of Phineas Rowlandson (30 Aug 1731-28 Jan 1759) and his wife Ruth Williams.

Phineas Rowlandson had one brother, Wilson (30 Sep 1733-1 Jul 1775), and two sisters, Thankful (b. 13 Aug 1727) widow of Captain William Ford (and mother of eight children) and Hannah, b. 7 Aug 1729.

The only record I can find of Hannah Rowlandson was her marriage to David "Pick" (Peck?) in Farmington, CT on June 1, 1749. I have not been able to determine whether Hannah and David Peck had children.

While the Beckley Genealogy (Zebedee Beckley is covered in pp. 41-49) does not reveal the maiden name of Zebedee's wife, Hannah, a lengthly list of real estate transactions is included and beginning with the first one (1758), four of the deeds mention Phineas Rowlandson.

Question: is it plausible to suppose that Zebedee and Hannah Beckley became the guardians of Joseph Rowlandson because Hannah Beckley was, in reality, the sister of Joseph's father, Phineas, and Hannah married Zebedee Beckley as her second husband?

Can anyone help solve this mystery?

-- Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan

Hi, I believe you are looking for information on Rowlandsons. I know most of us originated in the Lakes or Border Counties but you can try the 1903 UK Census which is now on line. My grandfather Authur was born in Wigan, he died 10 years ago however his father (I think Thomas) moved from the Lake District to Wigan about 1905 / 1906. He married a girl from the Cotswolds. Unfortunately he was killed in the First World War and shortly afterwards his wife died. There was eight children who were split up. I hope some of this might help

Hi Liz. Thomas and Bridget were my G+grandparents, as was their daughter Martha and John Eaton. I haven't been able to find out much about the Rowlandsons as most attention is paid to poor Mary (White) Rowlandson. I've ordered her book from our library. I'm curious about Bridget...I've seen several last names for her...such as Bradstreet, Hussy? or nothing at all. Do you have more information about her parents? Also, I saw a site that listed Thomas as a reverend also besides his son, Joseph. I'd like to communicate with someone who knows a bit about this family. What a horrible experience they went through!
Thanks. Jan

Thanks. Jan

My mother, Muriel Patricia Rowlandson, was born in 1919 in Hampshire. Her cousin, Paulin Rowlandson (born 1904 and still going strong) created an incredible family tree dating back to William Rowlandson of the Height in Cartnefell, who died in 1596. Our branch of the Rowlandsons came from the Cumbria area and some of them served in the British army in India. I have tons of information, but no idea how to transfer it into a manageable format for the Internet. I'd love to get in touch with other members of the family.
