I definitely agree about PA they are sticklers, I think that's probably why there aren't ANY records at FamilySearch except Philadelphia which really sucks. Plenty for Ohio and Illinois to keep me busy but virtually nothing for PA. I don't send requests to Butler county unless I have to.

Jackie

I am not sure where I got the infor on John's naturalization. I know it was after he served in the Civil War. PA and I went around and around because I wanted a copy of it and they couldn't find any of the naturalizations for that county. They were lost. Don't you love it. I have more trouble with PA and records. I will find the Roxbury folder and see what I have on it. My email is eteddys@att.net. If you send your email I can attach a copy of anything I find to an email to you.
Elizabeth

I can't remember where I found the information on John's naturalization. I am getting old. I know that PA and I went round and round about getting copies of the papers. They can't find them. PA is hopeless. I will go pull the file and see if I can pin that down. My email is eteddys@att.net.
I agree, I also just got some information from a cousin (of sorts) that pretty much confirms that they were BORN in Maryland, just what the FamilySearch records say. What didn't make sense to me is that the youngest was born allegedly in Scotland and died coming to America. If that child, William Jr. WAS born in Scotland then the older two would've been as well, I kind of think that William Jr. WAS the oldest and the other two came after because their mother didn't marry a second time till after they were already here. It could be that William Sr. is the one that died at sea.

Where did you see John Roxbury's naturalization papers, was it on Ancestry? If so, I guess I'll have to go back to the library tomorrow and look them up. I didn't get John's pension file from the Civil War because I'm linked to Upton.

Jackie

I believe you may have found John Roxbury's birth. On his naturalasion papers after the Civil War he said he was from either Ireand or Scotland. The problem with what these two children told census person is that they were very small children when they came here with their mother and all they remember is Maryland where their mother married Michael Heckathorn. How clever of you to have found that information. I would persue that lead.
Elizabeth

I don't believe that they ever lived in Massachusetts. According to FamilySearch, both John AND Upton were born in MARYLAND. According to the 1900 census for Upton, who was living with one of his children BOTH of HIS parents were also born in MARYLAND. There is also a PA death certificate (of sorts) at FamilySearch for a William Roxbury who died at age 19 months of consumption, his age and year of birth FIT with the third child of William Sr. and Mary (Vogan) Roxberry. It never made sense that they came from Scotland and I was skeptical about them ever settling in Massachusetts and then going to Maryland and THEN Pennsylvania. It is a much shorter trip from Maryland TO Pennsylvania, especially where my ancestor, Upton's youngest child, Cowden was born, Portersville, Butler County.

Mary didn't marry Michael Heckathorn till 1827 after William Roxberry Sr. died. I haven't found her past 1860, but she and Michael had 13 more children so she has to be somewhere, most likely Pennsylvania.

Jackie

Okay, according to the 1900 census both of Upton Roxberry's parents were born in MARYLAND so whoever thought that they emigrated from Scotland was incorrect. There is also a death certificate of sorts in Pennsylvania of a William Roxbury that died at age 19 months of consumption, it is VERY possible that HE is the William Jr. It isn't an ordinary standard death certificate form BUT his death fits the time frame to logically conclude that he could possibly be the William Jr. that allegedly died 'at sea'.

Jackie

I don't honestly believe that John or Upton were born anywhere but Maryland, as FamilySearch as this as their birthplace and their birthdates are slightly different. According to that site, John and Upton were born in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. They certainly couldn't have emigrated TO Maryland if they were born there. I think that they could've emigrated BEFORE and the William Jr. that allegedly died 'at sea' was the first born, since he was named after his father. I'm just throwing this out there because I have been stuck on this line for a long time, ever since I discovered that my ancestor, Cowden Roxberry, Upton's youngest son, 'assumed' the name Joseph Cowden when he moved to Ohio yet went back to being Cowden Roxberry not only when he went to visit family in Butler County, Pennsylvania but also when he was mentioned in brief articles in Prospect newspapers yet he was living and working in OHIO. That is the one thing that has never made sense to me. I can understand just WHY he changed his name but its almost as if he was hiding something from his family and at the same time he wasn't.

Jackie

Roxberry/Roxbury from Roxburgh?

Is it entirely possible that Roxberry was changed from ROXBURGH? I was poking around and came across a record for a ROXBURGH born almost identically to John Roxberry (24 May 1818) in SCOTLAND, with a father named William. Would like some opinions please.

Jackie

Cowden Roxberry changed his name to Joseph C. Cowden

Hi All,

I'm looking for some information. my great-grandfather, Cowden Roxberry changed his name to Joseph Cowden and I'd like to find out not only WHY but WHEN specifically he did it.

Cowden E. ROXBERRY was born 11 Aug 1867 in Portersville, Butler County, Pennsylvania to Upton Roxberry and Mary Heckathorn. He had several siblings and was married TWICE. First to a Mary C. WAGNER and then to my great-grandmother Lydia Amelia LEPLEY. In both cases his name was Cowden Roxberry, however between the time of the 1900 census and when my grandmother was born in August 1903, Cowden changed his birth AND surname to Joseph E. (or C.) COWDEN, using his given birth name as his surname. At the same time his wife, Lydia also had to change HER surname from Roxberry to Cowden.

The reason I suspect this is when the change took place is because the ONLY maiden name my grandmother EVER had was that of Cowden. However, according to Cowden (Joseph's) father's obituary, he and his family still assumed he was Cowden Roxberry because that is how he is refered in the obit.

Any help with a specific date when the name change took place would be greatly appreciated.

Jackie

Question about Dock Roxbury, I have Jacob Roxberry/Roxbury in my files as being born 1853 but he didn't marry anyone named Liddy Lepley that I've found, the ONLY Lydia Lepley I have is my great grandmother who married Cowden Roxberry aka Joseph C. Cowden. He changed his name to the latter sometime after the 1900 census as in the 1900 census he was listed as Cowden Roxberry and his wife was Lydia Roxberry, but in the 1910 census he was Joseph Cowden and his wife was Lydia and daughter was Alice (actually his daughter was listed as Irea, as her middle name was Arrea for Alice Arrea.

I descend from Upton, John's brother and Upton's youngest son Cowden, who coincidentally changed his name after 1900 from Cowden Roxberry to Joseph Cowden, for reasons I have yet to uncover. Cowden married twice, and I am happy to post that I have FINALLY gotten the name of his first wife, Mary C. WAGNER, his second wife is my great-grandmother, Lydia Amelia LEPLEY. Their only child Alice Arrea was my grandmother. They actually had another child but I know nothing about him/her.

She died in 28 Feb 1888 in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

Cowden married a second time, to my great-grandmother, Lydia LEPLEY in 1893, by the 1910 census he had changed his name from Cowden Roxberry to Joseph C.
Hi!

I'm linked to the Roxberrys through Upton and his son Cowden. I'm looking for any information on the Heckathorns and the Roxberrys. Cowden changed his name between 1900 and 1903 when his daughter, my grandmother was born. His name changed from Cowden E. Roxberry to Joseph E COWDEN. How's that for giving yourself a new identity! :-) Feel free to e-mail me at jknancy99@sbcglobal.net or jknancy99@hotmail.com

Looking forward to hearing from you and Happy Holidays!!

Jackie

James Robert Roxberry

Hi,

I am looking for some information on James Robert Roxberry. He's the son of Upton L. Roxberry and Mary 'Polly' Heckathorn. He was born in 1855 and died 30 Aug 1904. From the information I have his wife and children preceeded him in death. I have found his wife (possibly) as being Abigail McCandless and a daughter Hulda born 1879, according to the 1880 census but haven't found anything else. If he and Abigail had more than one child, it happened BEFORE 1904. Any help with this would be appreciated. I'm working on this line because James is a sibling of my great grandfather Cowden E. ROXBERRY (aka Joseph E. Cowden).

Thanks in advance

Jackie
jknancy99@sbcglobal.net

Cowden E. Roxberry's first wife

Hello,
I am looking for some information on my great grandfather, Cowden E. ROXBERRY/ROXBURY. He was married once before he married my great-grandmother but I have no information on his first wife other than she was born in 1870 and died in 1888 in Pennsylvania. She is buried there but I have no name for her. When he married his second wife, Lydia Amelia LEPLEY, they had one child PRIOR to the 1900 census but the only clue to that child is that they are listed in the 1900 census in the 'how many children/living' section. The only other child they had was my grandmother.
Also, Cowden E. ROXBERRY/ROXBURY changed his name to Joseph E. COWDEN sometime between 1900 and 1903 but I have not been able to find any reason. When he did this Lydia his wife had to also change her last name from ROXBERRY/ROXBURY to COWDEN. Any information about either of these queries would be greatly appreciated as I have hit the proverbial brick wall with these two mysteries.

Jackie

Roxbury/Roxberry confusion

Hello,
I have just discovered that my great grandfather Joseph Cowden may have changed his name to that from Cowden E. Roxberry. I have gotten very confused regarding this surname as well as about who his parents are. There is an Upton Roxbury and a John Roxbury. Cowden is listed with Upton as being his father but it could be John for all I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to add this information to my program and haven't found much since I've discovered his unusual name change. Incidently, Cowden changed his name sometime between 1900 and 1903 when he and his wife Lydia had a daughter who was my grandmother. How common is it to see a name change and especially one so unusual as this?
Thanks in advance,
Jackie Fry

e-mail me at jackie_fry99@yahoo.com

I was perusing the Roxberry name on the net and came across this site. I'm researching the Roxberry/Roxborough genealogy on my mother's side. She is descended from William Roxborough married to Mary Torrens (Torrence). Mary came to the US in 1800's She was born in 1810 and died aroung 1905. She settled in Allentown, PA with her family. I was in contact from someone in Pittsburgh/Butler area some years ago by the name of Roxberry. Would appreciate any information you can give. Thanks
