Hi all,
There was a Northeast Airlines plane crash near Nantucket, Massachusetts in August 1958. The plane left from New York but I'm not sure of the destination.
Re: Rubenfeld/Stanislav, Austria

Hi Lynn:

I am the sister of Deidre Raver who answered your post. She forwarded me a copy.

When my father married my mother in the 1950's, his last name was Rubenfeld. Because his background was Jewish and my mother's is Catholic, they eventually changed their last name to the more "neutral" Raver as a means of avoiding prejudices...in those days it was a bit scandalous for a Jew and a Catholic to marry. :>)

In any case, this is what I know about my grandfather's background. He came from Germany but from an area of Germany that was sometimes considered German and other times considered Polish. (It depended who owned what territory at what period of time.) He was a German citizen but left Germany to avoid the draft. (Good move when one considers the eventual rise of the Nazi's.)

In Yiddish, Rubenfeld means "field of turnips." During WWI my grandfather had the great and tragic misfortune of seeing his parents starve to death...which I am certain encouraged him to get the h*** out of Europe and move to America.

I don't know anything about the town of Stanislav. However, my cousin might know something. She married a Hungarian about 30 years ago and now lives in Hungary. She is a brillant archeologist so she knows a lot more about these kinds of things than I do. I recently visited her and she could rattle off names of towns my grandparents came from...goodness knows the names were too foreign sounding for me to remember! lol :> I will email to see if she can contribute anything.

Good luck...I'd be really interested in knowing if you find out anything. For all we know, we are distant cousins!

Best wishes,

Liz

Dear Deirdre,

Thanks so much for the information. As it turns out, both sets of grandparents came from Stanislav in what was then Austria. I'll see what I can find out.

Lynn

Maybe the Rubenfelds from Poland were related to the my grandfather's Rubenfeld family in Romania.(Austria)
It may have been a common name. They came to Brooklyn in the early 20th Century.
Deidre Raver

You should try Romania instead of Austria.
I am related to a Rubenfeld family - they originated in the Empire of Romania that was also Austria- the boundry changed quite a bit. Also, there was a lot of starvation in the 20th Century. I know my great grandparents with the last name Rubenfeld died because there wasn't enough food. My grandfather brought the rest of the family here to America.
Hope this helps.
Deidre Raver

My grandfather Sol, and my grandmother, Mollie, were both from the town of Stanislav, Austria. I estimate that they came to this country in the early nineteen hundreds.

I can't find anything, anywhere about the town of Stanislav. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
My grandfather, Irving Rubenfeld, also grew up in Brooklyn, but I was not aware of any brothers that immigrated with him from Poland. I would be interested to know if there were any connections between 2 Jesse Rubenfelds.

My late grandfather's name was Louie Rubenfeld. He resided in East New York, Brooklyn and in later years, Co-Op City. I know he left a turmoil in Poland and came to America. He then rescued all his brothers and sisters from Poland, one by one. I am currently tracking my family tree. Perhaps this is the same family, maybe not. I will ask as I research.
Regards,
Deidre Raver (Raver was changed from Rubenfeld)
