With almost 300 Rudges world wide it could be a handy resource for family tree research or just a chance to mingle with people that have the greatest surname in the world. Come have a look..

Did you ever find Albert Rudge? I have an Albert, born in 1886 in Forest of Dean, son of John Rudge and Naomi Saunders. In 1901 he was living in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, Wales. I don't have any other details but our Rudge ancestors also came to Canada in 1911 and settled in Manitoba where many of us still live.

My Rudge family were in the Gloucestershire area. Gt x2 grandfather Henry was born about 1811 in the area but can't verify this. He was married to mary Hooper in 1839 in Tewkesbury. On the certificate it states that his dad was William Rudge a sheersgrinder. I would love any info particularly in regard to Henry's birth and his parents.
Thanks
Chris

I hope someone can help on this one as it seems complicated..
My Husbands mother was Jean Mary Chappell at birth in 1925 in Kircudbright Scotland but later adopted by William & Mary Kirkland.
Her birth father was John Chappell who sometimes resided at Linden Gardens, London W2. Her birth mother was Margaret Mary Chapman or Chappell sometime of The Studio, 54 The Strand London. It is believed that her birth mother left for Canada and either married or re-married and had another family. Family stories also say that her birth father killed himself a few years after her birth because of the shame as he was already married, we were also told he was well connected with horse racing. We don't know anything as fact and would love to find out any information we can.
Richard Rudge

So I'm pretty confident that i've traced things correctly a ways back to William F Rudge (born in New Jersey in 1866, died in Connecticut in 1949) to his father William Rodney Rudge (born in Hereford? England in 1845, died in Massachusetts (i think) in 1916).

I think his father was Richard Rudge (born in Hereford England in 1808?) and his mother was Ann Hill? (1810?).

But now i'm stuck! I can't find any parent information and i'm not familiar enough with the resources for England. Any tips?

Rudge family in France

Does anyone have information about Rudges living in France (Le Havre, Paris, Nantes)? My branch migrated from England to France (ca. 1840), ultimately winding up in North Carolina, USA. I now have reaason to believe that some of the branch I am following had descendents who remained in France. Here's the URL for my branch: http://homepages.wmich.edu/~rudged/gen/rudge.html

Thanks for responding. Since posting this message, I've dug up heaps of information on my family through the Free British BMD Index, British census, and a couple other sources. The Rudges of Gloucester are most likely related somewhere in time but I couldn't find a link to your family and mine.

Have your searched the Forest of Dean website (genealogy site for families who lived in that Gloucestershire area) at http://www.forest-of-dean.net ?

Best of luck in your searching!

My G3 Grandmother was Mary Rudge who definitely married John Dunshee (of Smethwick) in 1835. According to the 1851 census she was born c1817 in West Bromwich (which would tie her in with the IGI record for Mary Rudge, d of Samuel & Mary Rudge, chr 16/11/1817). However, according to the 1881 census she was born nearer 1815/16 in Smethwick. I'm inclined to believe the former. If you know any more I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Please e-mail me at davesmith_115@hotmail.com

Dave Smith

All we have as birth place is England or Wales. (In 1910 it is noted as Wales, in 1920 and 1930 it is given as England. Source accuracy is therefore questionable.

The source for John RUDGE's birth date is his naturalization papers.

Birth date of Mary is from her death certificate. However in the 1900 census it is given as June 1880.
