Hello James:

Do you have any confirmation of a link between the Arabella and her husband Henry Rudkin, who were living, with their daughter Arabella in Tower Hamlets at the 1841 census, and the Rudkin Family in Ireland? Was this Arabella the Arabella Cotter that many researchers seem to have in their records. I just havn't seen any proof. The above mentioned daughter I believe to be my gt gt grandmother. The census form does record the birthplace of all three as Ireland.

Regards,

R.

Hi, all. I'm just diving into my Rudkin genealogy and am currently researching George William Rudkin, born in Fleet Fen in 1857/1858, and married Emma Laxton in 1878. They immigrated to the US with their daughter, Annie E. (also referenced as Anna E. and Ann Elizabeth) in 1882. I'm looking for information about George William's father, a John Thomas Rudkin who is thought to have died in 1865, was married to Sarah (thought to have died in 1866), and had 7 children that I know of -- Ruth, John Henry, Joseph, Charles, George William, Sarah and Mary Elizabeth. Any additional information is more than welcome!

Hello - I'm a Rutkin in Australia descended from Rudkin's in Lancashire (Warrington, Blackburn, and Clitheroe). The family moved to Brisbane Australia from 1885. I'd suggest the family were not the ones writing/spelling the surname, simply pronouncing it in various accents for others to record in church registers or other official documents. The spelling depended on the listener's interpretation of what they heard our relatives pronounce.

I wonder whether some would have pronounced the "Rud" rhyming with "mud", or alternatively rhyming with "wood". It's possible the "d" and "t" sounds were similar in some accents.

Hello, I have been researching my family tree today and would like to share information with other Rudkin's out there. For some reason my part of the Rudkin family used to move to different parts of the country spreading from Uppingham late 1700's, Mansfield early 1800's, Easington mid 1800's and in early 19th century my father moved to warwickshire where many of us now live.

What puzzles me is that some of my relatives have the surname Rutkin. Has this happened to you? I only found out this as I got stuck and selected the 'include variants' option.

Anyway if you have any Rudkin/Rutkin in your family tree from Uppingham, Mansfield or Easington and would like to share results please contact me. After all we maybe related.

Thank you.

Hi Pat

Thanks for that - I appreciate your reply.

He passed away two years ago unfortunately. I now live in New Zealand but I did manage to get some information from the UK after the funeral and will try to sort some detail out. Grandfather died not long after I was born so I did not know him.

As far as I know the family were always based in Leicestershire, but Rutland is just on the eastern border of the county and at times has been part of Leicestershire.

I had some information that Rudkin's were Huguenots from Paris and were into the rag trade. They moved from Paris to East London due to religious persecution and then onto Leicestershire. This fits with Rudkin's moving to Christchurch, New Zealand (Lane Walker Rudkin or CCC the Canterbury brand. Some of my reles are still in the rag trade in and around Leicestershire.

I will get back to you when I know more.
The Rudkin name was initially Rodkyn and they were Saxons (Germanic) who went to Norfolk, possibly in 1066. There is a link between Leicestershire and Rutland and some went south to Essex and also Lincolnshire - there is also a strong Irish link. Some of my Rudkins ended up in Leicestershire from Rutland - what was your grandfather's name and whom did he marry?
Pat Mahoney
Middle Swan Western Australia
Unfortunately I haven't gotten anywhere with this line. I do know a little bit more about the timeline of events which I've listed below but nothing else. My grandfather is sure that his great-grandfather is William Rudkin who married Sarah Jane Davis and the evidence that I've found seems to support that. It's just a matter of which William Rudkin he is and when he came from England (supposedly).

Sarah Jane Davis born 1834. Sarah married Samuel Hillery 20 Oct 1859. This was his second marriage so there are at least two children in the 1860 Census who are not biologically Sarah's. 1860 lists Samuel 41, Sarah J 26, Caroline 11, Francis 9, and Mary E 2. 20 Jan 1864 Sarah married William Rudkin. In 1870 she has two children: Elizabeth 5, and Zachariah Taylor 3. Also an Elorey Henry 10 which might be a mis-spelling of Hillery from her previous marriage. In 1880 the children aren't with William and Sarah but I know that Charles was born in Jul 1870. From there it's much easier to trace the lines but I just can't get back further than William. Having his actual date of birth would help but the census information is very off (census says 48 in 1870 and 65 in 1880).

~Katie

William Henry Rudkin

So I believe that one of my ancestors is William Rudkin who married Sarah Jane Davis. I believe that his middle name was Henry but do not have any proof. I have been searching because I have conflicting dates of birth for him - from 1815 all the way to 1842. In the 1870 census he is listed as 48 and in the 1880 census he is listed as 65. I did find one William Rudkin (born about 1829) that came over from England in September 1850. There isn't a William Rudkin on the 1860 census that I can find. What are the odds that these could be the same William Rudkin? It's not a common last name but I am hesitant because the ages are so different. Is it possible that the census is that off and he was just missed in the 1860 census? I know one of his sons was missed in the 1880 census so people are left off. My other question is there is a Henry Rudkin born 1829 that I have found - could this Henry actually have been William Henry (who went by his middle name in England, and his first in the US)? There are so many dead ends with this line it gets frustrating. Any help would be appreciated - even if it's only guessing. Thanks!

~Katie

Hi Jim, Thank you for your email and it would be great to see the Rudkin tree. Thanks for the offer. I am researching on my old family home where I lived as a child growing up, sadly this house no longer exists. The house was at Staplers, near Newport on the Isle of Wight. I did find on an 1881 census the Rudkin family which I am sure were living in my old roots and thought it would be nice to see where they went after leaving the house. The census says Hester Rudkin aged 34, born Cork, Arthur Wellesley William Waring Rudkin aged 9, born Dublin, Violet Mary Rudkin aged 5, born Collon Ireland, Leonora Stella Grace Rudkin aged 3 born Italy (British subject). Hesters maiden name was Waring. Also with them was a Mary Ann Condon aged 60 born in Wicklow Ireland and she was their domestic nurse. Also there was a servant girl. The old family house was a big house. They were not there in 1891 as I have found the next family. As I am trying to put a book together regarding the property I would be pleased to know what happened to the Rudkin family. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards Angie. (I still live on the Isle of Wight.)

My name is Angie Cook from the Isle of Wight UK researching my old family home on the Island and I believe that the above name and her family were living there in 1881. I found your and her name linked together as part of a family tree and thought I would try to get in touch as I am trying to put a book together on my old home and the people who lived there before me. If these are your family, maybe you could tell me what happened to them and I can tell you more about the old family home if you are interested. Look forward to hearing from you.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 23 June 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

SHOT HIS BABY BROTHER

Five Year Old Boy Finds a Loaded Revolver and Used It For a Plaything.

Oklahoma City: While Mr. and Mrs. Rudkin, near Britton, were absent from their home their five year old son went into the house and while going through a dresser drawer found a loaded revolver. The boy took the weapon into the yard where his two year old brother, Ray, was playing. He pressed the barrel of weapon against the younger child's stomach. There was a loud report, and the next instant blood began to pour from a gaping wound. The injured child was brought here as quickley as possible and placed in the St. Anthony Hospital. Drs. Ryan and Jolly performed a surgical operation and removed the bullet but the child grew steadily worse until released from suffering by death.

In speaking of the accident Mr. Rudkin stated that he had forgotten the revolver was in the house and did not know it was loaded.

This is probably far too late, but you might still be active. My husband was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire and his family go back though Pinchbeck and Crowland Lincs to Glapthorn, Northants and then to Rutland in 1709 - 1720. I have also looked at the other Rudkin families in Lincolnshire in 1841. have traced two others to Rutland, 1 to Derby and 1 to Leicestershire.
Have been told earliset Rudkin/Rudkyn reference is 1329 in Essex - either Viking origin or Saxon. My husband was once on a radio link and a professor on another phone line told him "from his name and voice he came from Saxony in Germany".
The link in Rutland we are looking for is Samuel/Samwell Rudkin and only one found so far is 1709 in Uppingham, son of Samuel. All the Rudkins are suppose to be decendents of Henry of Wing (who came from Essex/Norfolk in early 1500s and his 5 sons
The more you dig the deeper it gets
Diane Rudkin
