There were thousands of sames going as far back to the 1300's with the spelling of Rudolph with the ph. There were Rudolphs that were nobles and slaves.

Milnor's relationship to Marguerite Pendaries Baca is a little more complicated than that. ;)

Milnor's son Charles Frederick Rudulph married Emilie Pendaries, the oldest daughter of Jean and Mathilde Pendaries. Emilie had two younger sisters, Marie and Marguerite. So Marguerite was the sister of Milnor's daughter-in-law.

I never met either Emilie (who was my great-grandmother) or Marie, but Marguerite was still alive until about 1971. She was a wonderful lady, who showed me how to decorate blown eggs and who sent me a small present every birthday. Oliver LaFarge, who married Marguerite's daughter Consuelo, described Marguerite as being "both perfectly French and perfectly Spanish -- no mean feat!"

If you were named after her, I can assure you she was a remarkable and charming lady. She was also, as I recall, the first woman Secretary of State for New Mexico.

If you run across Oliver's book "Behind the Mountains," it's well worth reading. It's a series of essays (first published in The New Yorker) about life on the Pendaries Ranch, Rociada.

I am not sure I am directly related to her, but I have a suspicion that is where my name came from. I was named after my grandmother, Marguerite Vahldieck who was the daughter of Julia (Rudolph) Swords. Her father was Edward Rudolph who was the brother of Milnor Rudolph. I think she named her daughter after one of Milnors daughters, Marguerite, but I cannot be sure. That is where the name Marguerite first started in our family. Is this the same person you were referring to?

Thanks,
Marguerite Vahldieck

Oh, also, I have family lore about how and why the spelling of the name "Rudulph" was changed.

According to my grandmother (Garnet Kiefer Rudulph, the wife of Louis Frederick Rudulph, Sr.), the name was originally spelled "Rudulph." However, most of the family in Maryland gave up arguing with people about the spelling, and changed it to "Rudolph," including my great-great grandfather, Milnor.

Milnor moved out to New Mexico, and entrusted one of his brothers with the money to buy supplies for a general store he was starting in the vicinity of Rociada. The goods for the store duly arrived -- but they were followed by a bill for the goods. Milnor paid the bill, but changed the spelling of his name back to "Rudulph" to differentiate him and his family from his "thieving"relatives back in Maryland.

Re: Milnor Rudulph in New Mexico

Charles was my great-grandfather. I have the manuscript of "Los Billitos," along with my father's translation.

For what it's worth, my father (Louis F. Rudulph, Jr.) thought Louis Branch's book took a lot of liberties with the facts. For example, he told me the picture that Branch was using for Maria Candelaria Rudulph de Trujillo was definitely not the grandmother he remembered. However, the picture of Milnor in Branch's book is the same as one we have, though. (Branch, I believe, is a cousin of ours.)

More importantly, my father was certain that no one in the family would ever have had the friendly relationship with Billy the Kid that is described in Branch's book as existing between Milnor's family and the Kid. Charles (as family stores go) lost two of his toes waiting in ambush in a tree all night for the Kid, along with other members of a posse. The Kid apparently was tipped off, and avoided the trap. (For what it's worth, this is consistent with Pat Garrett's account.)

According to a cousin of ours in Alabama, Milnor (cousin to Lucretia Rudulph Garfield) was descended from Michael Johannes Rudulph, who had been the Captain of the Guard for Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. According to the story, Michael Johannes eloped with Anna, the niece and ward of the king, and the two of them fled with his three brothers first to Paris and then to Maryland. I have absolutely no proof of any of this, except that another cousin says she saw Anna's beaded purse (with her coat of arms, which included a Scottish thistle -- which would make sense, if she really was who it is said she was) in a museum in Baltimore. The cousin says she has a picture of the purse, but I have never myself seen the purse or a picture of it.

The only support for this story I have been able to come up with is that it makes some sense, given the personalities involved, that if a niece and ward of Friedrich Wilhelm I HAD eloped with the Captain of the Guard, the two of them would have wanted to get as far as possible from the King, who did not take kindly to being defied. Also, for whatever reason, the males of my family all seem to have the name "Friedrich" somewhere in their names.

My husband and I spend part of each year in Europe, and if anyone has any suggestions about how to pursue this over there, I'd love to hear them.

This excerpt was in a group of papers sent to me years ago about David Willard Rudolph. He Floated Logs on the Allegheny River to log mills, then farmed in Nicholas County in a 2 story house of logs, which he built. 68 feet in length and 12 feet wide with a curving staircase. It was still standing in 1956 but has since been torn down according to Anna Watkins.

David was Superintendent of a Mine in Allegheny County during the civil war.
In Nicholas Co. they rented a place on Peter's Creek between Summersville and Swiss on the Gauley River and David worked as a teamster with a 4 Horse team and hauled salt from the salt works at Malden to Webster Springs and brought back other supplies. I will try to find the rest of the paper. it talks also about annie matilda callison.

From there it goes down to Abraham Rudolph, David Williard Rudolph, Anna Matilda Rudolph, Pleasant Callison, Max but Callison, then me, Krista Callison.

I don't know anything about John but would love to find out more. I believe he was born in Holland, PA, not the country of Holland.

Pat...I do not recognize the name...I am a decendant from John George, John Edleman, Wiley B., Finis, then my grandmother, Grace Rudolph Smith....our Rudolphs came from Germany to PA, NC, TN, then into Kentucky...not sure if we are in the same line of Rudolphs...but, I would be interested in knowing the names in the Bible...Thank you very much and how wonderful of you to try and locate the rightful Rudolph line.

A Rudolph married into my Lindner family in the early 1850s. My family came from Sachsen Altenburg, but I don't know if he came from the same area or not.

I really don't think you can pin an area down with only the surname. As someone already replied, the surname appears throughout the area that became Germany.

I am sure he was one of our family born in McCracken Co KY. No doubt his parents are buried in the New Hope C. P. Church in Lone Oak area of Paducah McCracken Co KY as Herbert and Guy were used in one line of the family. Guy Jefferson Rudolph was a sheriff in McCracken or Marshall Co in the early or mid 50s.
I wrote a book for my husbands Rudolph line, but did not follow all of the children down into the 20th century except our line which I took from Western KY to Montgomery Co TN, NC and finally back to Germany.
All the Guy Rudolphs I knew are deceased and he is not in my husbands direct line, just cousins.

I'm also seeking more info on this Rudolph line -- working on a family history DVD and have just joined Ancestry.com for free trial.

John George Rudolph born 1748 in Holland, married Christena Meyers 1771 -- these are my gr-gr-gr-gr grandparents. Jacob & Elizabeth are my direct line, followed by Abraham and Emily (Leech) Rudolph, then Andrew Johnson Rudolph who married Jennie Larsen and had my grandfather Hans Emil Rudolph born 1889. I have an 1898 photo of the Rudolph family in Annandale, Minnesota. Any info we can share?
