Hello Jim:

Just to clear some confusion, Barry is my husband and we share the same account. My name is Cathy and I would be a great-granddaughter of Sarah and William. When my grandfather, Alfred, emigrated to Canada in 1913 it was as if all connections with England were cut. Alfred died before I was born and both my grandmother and father died when I was 8 so it's been hard to track down info. Grandma had left me one photo album but it's photos of their life in Canada and her sister in Australia.

Would you mind sending me copies of the photos? I would love to see them. I have posted photos of my grandfather and father on my Rummery/Riley/Varrin/Babin tree.
Very nice to hear from you.

Cathy Stevens

Hello Barry. I am a great-great grandson of William Rummery and his wife Sarah Sellens. I have an electronic copy of a photo of Sarah taken when she was a young woman, possibly around the time of her marriage in 1872. I also have a copy of a photo of Sarah, her daughter Rose and my grandmother, Doris, who it appears was Rose's daughter born out of wedlock but who believed for many years that Sarah was her mother. Alas, I have no photos of William or other members of the family. I remember seeing a photo of William when I was very young. My grandmother described him to me as 'a small dark man who looked like a gypsy.' Kind regards, Jim

Hello: I live in New Brunswick, Canada. According to my research, I have John Rummery married Jane Thomset in 1747. Then Richard Rummery married Ann Prior in 1778.
Richard Rummery of Etchingham married Elizabeth Hawkins in 1802. One of their sons, Stephen married Eliza Farley in 1831. His son, William, married Sarah Sellens in 1872. My grandfather, their son Alfred, was born in 1875. Salehurst, Sussex seems to be where a lot of Rummerys lived.

Does anyone have any old photos of the Rummerys in England? I have nothing prior to my grandparents emigrating to Canada.

Alfred Edward Rummery (1875-1952) and Boer War

According to family oral history, my grandfather, Alf,was a batman or groom to an officer for the Boer War. The officer was captured and Alf served alongside the regular forces. I am just trying to find out more info about him as I can find the 1891 and 1911 census for him but not the 1901 which would be when he was in Africa or working for someone. I believe he might have worked for the family of the officer as a coachman or groom - I know he worked with horses. He emigrated to Canada in 1913.
His parents were William Rummery and Sarah Sellens.

Her husband's first name was Ernest. He died in Eltham or Woolwich in 1950. As I recall he had served in the East Kent Regiment ('the Buffs', I think they were called)in the Boer War and later in India. After leaving the army he worked for Woolwich Council as a rubbish collector or 'dustman'. Ring any bells? I was only 7 when he died but I have quite vivid memories of him.

Hello Molly, I thought it might have been you.

Quite by chance, I happened on some information about the name. It seems that several derivations are possible. To me, the most likely is from 'romere' an early mediaeval word meaning someone who had made the pilgrimage to Rome. Other possibilities include 'Romero', a person of Italian origin - this surname is fairly common in the Hispanic world - and 'Roumare', the name of a village in Rouen. However, I generally tend to favour the homely over the exotic.

This information came in the first instance from Mike and Nicky Rummery's site Rummery.co.uk but is repeated elsewhere.

I also found (on this present site) a map showing the distribution of Rummery families as recorded in the 1891 census. Most were in Sussex and Kent, with a few in London and (apparently) Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

Surprisingly, though, there were several Rummery families in Devon and across the water in South Wales, with no family of that name between Sussex and the southwest. If 'romere' is the real origin of the name there is no reason to assume that the eastern and western groups are related, though of course they may be.

On a less formal note, I remember coming across an old word 'rummer' meaning (I think) a pint pot. In Dutch, 'rumoer' means 'uproar'...Of course I'm not implying that this has anything to do with our side of the family!

Bairbre and I are doing well. I hope the same goes for you and Clive. We hope to visit the Old Dart next year and catch up with anyone who wants to see us.

Love

Jim

My maternal grandmother was Doris Etheldreda (or Ethelinda, I'm not sure) Rummery. I believe she was born in Mountfield, Sussex, not far from Battle. She married Ernest Stracey, a guardsman, not long after WW1 and bore him three children: Sylvia, my mother Doris and Jean. She had a son, George, from a previous relationship. Ernest died in 1950. My grandmother never remarried. She emigrated to Western Australia in 1961 along with my parents, my sisters and her daughter Jean. She died in Perth aged 88 in 1984.

I favour Etheldreda as her second name because I recall that the parish church in Mountfield is named for St Etheldreda. About 50 years ago, when I was in my teens, I spent an afternoon with Doris's brother Bert and his family in Mountfield and visited the church while I was there. I don't know the names of other siblings but I think she had sisters.

I may be wrong, but I think her father's name was William. She once described him to me as 'a small dark man who looked like a gypsy'. I think her mother's name may also have been Doris. There's probably heaps of information in the local parish registers, because I have the impression that the family had lived in and around Mountfield for a very long time.

What I'd like to know is, where does the name Rummery come from and what does it mean?

Jim

Hello
I am tracing my father's maternal line. His Grandmother was Alice Mildred Rummery who had sisters Phyllis and Doris. She gave birth to my Grandmother in Hastings and for some reason my Grandmother at around 4/5yrs was taken away from her and brought up by Hobbs family. Alice Rummery
died due to war wounds at 34yrs old during the first raids on hastings. Her father is William Rummery - a gardener deceased at the time of her death. Annie Rummery may have been her mother as she lived at 17 lennox St with the others. I cannot find Alice Rummery's birth cert so cannot provide exact link to possible Rummery family in saleshurst area. Do you have any info on a hastings line??
Hi John,
In Sept 2003 I visited John Rummery in Armidale, spent a very enjoyable day with him. His family think we look alike!
His originas are in Saleshurst, mine in Rushklake Green just a stones throw away. So maybe we are connected somehow.
Call if ever you come to NZ.
Yes Viv, you are quite correct, it is Rushlake Green, just a typo.
Since writing my first message I have visited John Rummery in Armidale NSW Australia, spent a day with him. His family think we look rather alike! His descendants come from Saleshurst which is just a stones throw from Rushlake Green. I have not as yet been able to work out when my line moved from Saleshurst to Rushlake Green, I understand that they did though, so there's a chance that way back the Australian John and I are connected.
Hi, I was just looking through the web for Rummery. My mothers family are Rummery and there are several related families in Sandhurst Kent. I was interested in your address as they were on the Kent Sussex border, all farmers. Hop farmers up to the death of hop farming in Kent.
I was always told Rummery was an old Romay name do you know anything else.
I don't know if you are aware that the place is RuShlake Green near Heathfield not RuClake Green.
Regards
Viv Cheshire

From what I can gather The Rummery's connected to my family tree came from Salehurst in Sussex. A distant relative Jenny/Jeannie Elizabeth Logan b1876 Lambeth. married George Henry Rummery b1880 (1878) a stoker at a turkish baths. They married in lambeth Jan 1906 and had a son John Henry in Dec 1906, I think from research he died in 1922 if its the same one. The witnesses to the wedding were Jessie Clarke and John Dean.
Does anyone have any connections ?

I have a photo of a two story house in Maine with writing that states Esther A. Rummery. On the back is a note describing the house and an aunt Ann telling that the picture was taken from the railroad tracks. I am trying to connect this picture with my family. Could she have had a child that married into the Cottingham or Stockton Family. Any one have Esther as an ancestor???? Would have possibly been 78 years old in 1920.

In my family tree back to 1724 there are
Rummerys and Rummarys recorded differentlly for
parents and their chilldren--spelling was not important. There is a branch in Kent who are Rumleys, and Rumerys in the US
Don't be bashful. Lets unite!

I live in Ohio and that is where they settled, in Strongsville and most of them are in the Strongsville Cemetary. Tamar is the daughter of Zara D. and Abigail Hewett. They also had a son named Zara D. and that is the line that my husbands family is on. I don't know if you'll read this or not but if you do I'd like to e-mail with you and see what kind of information you have.

Hello,
I am researching a connection to the Rummery family in the Casino/Lismore area.
Agnes M Gibson married Richard J Rummery at Casino BDM no. 6223/1926. Agnes is registered as the daughter of Elizabeth and James Gibson. I believe Elizabeth Gibson was previously married to Frederick Francis Kenning at Grafton in 1877, but re-married James Gibson after the accidental drowning of Francis in the Clarence river in 1880. James and Elizabeth were married at Balmain in 1893 and they had 5 children that I know of. Can anyone verify what I am assuming? Was Elizabeth Gibson/Kenning born Elizabeth Grohs/Gross of Grafton? If so, she is the 'missing' sister of my grandmother, Augusta. I look forward to hearing from anyone with some information.

My grandmother was Katherine Elizabeth Rummery, born Katherine Elizabeth Rich in 1904, died 1972 I think. She is buried in Brenchley churchyard, Kent. Her husband died in 1948 or so. He was the gardener at a big house in Kent (Burwash?) and my grandmother was in service there. Sorry if the details are a bit hazy, I live in Japan and haven't been home for a few years. But Rummery is quite definitely a Weald of Kent/Sussex name.
