Hendrick Russum

HENDRICK RUSSUM
Hendrick Russum, born Feb 12, 1852 in Brandba, Hadeland, Norway emigrated to America in 1876, coming firts to Fillmore County, MN.

During the late 1870's, he visited what is now the Grafton area, considering where to take up a homestead. After taking a homestead in the Grafton area, he moved permanently to this area in 1880.

Guldbrand and Hans Mohagen accompanied him on the move to this area in Walsh Centre township. At the time of their moving the railroad went only as far as Grand Forks, so their belongings and livestock were shipped that far, and the remainder of the journey was made on foot with horse and oxen drawn wagons. The slough area around the present town of Ardoch created a crossing problem, but the cloven-footed oxen were able to pull the wagons through the mud, so they were soon able to continue northward again.

After Mr Russum had built a sod house, he returned to Fillmore County, Minn and married Asborg WRAALSTAD on March 27, 1882 and brought his bride back to his homestead. The railroad had now come to Grafton and ran near his sod house. They walked out on the tracks and from the tracks he carried his bride through water, tall grass and buffalo bones, which were everywhere, to their sod shanty.

They lived three years in the sod house until a frame house was started, still a part of the old Russum farm.

Mr and Mrs Russum raised five children:
Carl Russum (deceased)
Ragna Russum (Mrs George Carlson) (deceased)
Marie Russum (Mrs Carl Lanes
Herman Russum
Palmer Russum

Their three sons, Carl, Herman and Palmer remained and farmed in the Grafton area. Ragna moved to Crosby following her marriage and lived there until her death.

Hendrick Russum died June 12, 1921 and Asborg Russum on Nov 12, 1940.
--page 524-525 Walsh Heritage,ND USA 1881-1981 Vol 1

Does anyone have any information, even the names, of the parents of William Jesse Russum (AKA Jessie Russum, Jesse Russum, W.J. Russum)? He was my great-grandfather. He was born in 1868 in Mississippi, don't have death date. Lived in Smith County in 1910s and 1920s, moved to Copiah County later. I don't think John W. Russum is the father, don't see Jesse listed as a child. Thanks for any info.
My great-great-grandfather, William B. Russum, had a younger brother named Isaac who, after serving in the War Between the States in an Illinois regiment, went to Missouri, farmed there and raised a family, moved on to Idaho where he spent the rest of his life. Another Russum brother, Jacob, also served in the War Between the States, went to Missouri where he raised a family, then moved on to Kansas where he spent the rest of his life. Could either one of these Russum brothers be in your line of ancestry?

Russum, Mississippi, history

According to the book, Polk Family and KInsmen, William Polk Russum went from Maryland to Mississippi in 1831. He married twice. First he married Sarah Ann Stanford and 2nd to "Miss" Watson. Several years ago I was in contact with a descendant who was still in the area. I believe it was Sydnette Russum (Mrs. George) in the Pt. Gibson area.
According to my research, William Polk Russom was son of William Russum and Eleanor Bozeman. There is a will of William Russum dated 1819.
That William Russum was son of Winlock Russum and Esther Ann Polk. Winlock left will dated 1774.
Winlock Russum was son of Edward Russam who left will in 1747. (I believe that Winlock's mother was Mary _____. However Edward Russum was married to Ann Erwin at the time he died. His will is so specific in regard to the care of his sons, that it leads one to believe that she was not mother of the children.)
That Edward Russam was son of Edward Russam who had married Elizabeth Parker. Edward left will in 1721 in which he named 7 children.
That Edward, was, I believe, the Edward Russam who arrived on the ship, "Cecilius of London" in 1677.

There was another early Russam named Thomas but I don't know how or when he arrived.
He, too, left a will in Talbot County, MD dated 1699.(He mentioned one child, Peter.)

Note that the earliest spelling of the name in the records is "Russam."

I did much research about 20 years ago. I hope, soon, to write more about what I found about the early Russams and the references that serious researchers might find valuable.

Unfortunately, I was never able to connect my own branch of the family with the early settlers, although I know that my great great grandfather, Price Russom, was born in Maryland.
Mary Hicks (HicksGM@aol.com)

Thomas Russum lived N.Y. in 1924

Is anyone out there descended from, or know of, Thomas Russum who lived in White Plains, N.Y. (12 Seneca Ave) and had office in N.Y, City on 42nd St in 1924?
He did research, himself, and hired a Mrs. Leticia Wilson to research Maryland records to try to find parents of his grandfather, Thomas Bayley Russum (b.1 June 1811) Mrs. Wilson travelled to all the Eastern Shore counties and made notes of all the Russum records she found.
Some of Mrs. Wilson's notes and Mr. Russum's letters to her are filed in Maryland, but her reports to Mr. Russum were not copied and saved.(I obtained copies about 20 years ago and though I don't recall exactly, I think it was from the Maryland Historical Society)
It is possible that the reports she sent to Mr. Russum are still around... lying in an old trunk somewhere... and would provide some additional information.
If anybody can help, please contact me at HicksGM@aol.com
Mary Hicks

I only know of one so far; Louise(a) Russum probably born around 1820?, from MD but moved to Philadelphia area and married a Crothers. I am wondering if we are connected as I saw the names Frances and Caroline which were names in the family from way back.In fact, Louise(a) named her daughter Caroline... Let me know if you know of anyone by this name or family in PA. Thanks.

Marlene
Joseph Countis Russum did not have a son named John W. Russum. His children were Joseph Countis Russum Jr., Charles Russum and William Russum who died young. Emeline Russum, his wife, Charles and William are all buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, MD. I am having a hard time connecting the family also. At first I thought it would be easy since Russum seemed to be uncommon. That was a mistake. There are so many in the Maryland area that I can't make any sense out of the lines. This is what I know about the Russum's of that time.
William Russom married Mary Countiss 1797

Their children were:
John Harvey Russom b. 1798
Anna Russom b. 1800
Elizabeth Russom b. 1802
William Russom b. 1804
Rebecca Russom b.1807
Caroline Russom b. 1809
Francis Russom b. 1812
Joseph Countiss Russum b. 1814
Mary Russom (twin of Joseph) b. 1814

How we got to be spelled Russum rather than with an o I don't know or maybe the information I have is not correct.

William had a brother Levi. (He might have had others but I haven't been able to determine which Russum family in the area that William and Levi are from.

Levi's children were:
Ander b. 1804 married Jane Fuller 1839
Elisabeth b. 1807
Asa b. 1810 died 1810

It's interesting about the twins in the family. My brother and sister are twins also, born in 1952 before the fertility drugs.
If you want to email me directly, my email address is arussum@crusoe.net.
It seems we ought to be able to determine some connection with Easton, MD. being a common reference point.
Anne

The author of those Civil War letters, Charles Polk Russum, had two older brothers, four younger brothers, and three sisters: Elizabeth, Sarah, and Margaret Jane. All but one of the boys, including Charley, moved to Illinois from Ohio in the 1850s after their father, Peter Russum, passed away. They left their mother, Catherine Eccleston Brown Russum, and three sisters in Ohio. All of this generation of Russum children were born in the 1830s and 1840s.

Charley died in late 1863 near Chattanooga and had no heirs. I descend from his next older brother, William Brown Russum. Another older brother, James Fisher Russum, also died during the war in 1864. Two of Charley's younger brothers, Isaac and Jacob were Union soldiers as well. They survived the war and made it back home to Illinois, but both promptly moved to far southwest Missouri in the late 1860s where they established farms and began their families. Jacob moved on over into southeast Kansas a few years later. Isaac moved to Idaho much later on.

Possibly the Mary Russum you are looking for was Isaac Russum's eldest daughter, Mary Angeline, b. 1870 in Jasper County, Missouri near Joplin. Jacob Russum had two daughters, but neither was named Mary.

Charley had an uncle, also named Charles Polk Russum, who was his father's younger brother. That CP Russum and Peter had moved to Ohio from Delaware, probably in the early 1840s when Charley and his older siblings were children. The elder CP Russum had a couple of sons and a daughter. She died in adolesence. One of his sons died at age 18, but the youngest, William, apparently lived his entire life in Ohio. I don't know if he had children, but if he did they likely would have arrived in the late 1870s and 1880s. This William Russum died in 1935 in Montgomery County, Ohio.

I hope this review is helpful to you in your search and if any other Russums find they can relate to any of these family members I would like to share more information.

I believe this was Edward Russum III, son of Edward II and Mary (Hopkins) Russum born after 1726 in either Talbot or Dorchester County, Maryland...

He had two brothers: James and Winlock Russum. Winlock was the youngest, born 15 Aug 1730. We have no information about James, but Winlock Russum was married to Esther Ann Polk, daughter of Robert and Alice (Nutter) Polk. Esther was born in 1746. Winlock and Ann had eight children: Robert Russum was the eldest and possibly a Minuteman in the Revolutionary War. A daughter, Nancy Russum, may have been married to Daniel Rogers, 13th Governor of Delaware...

The grandfather of Edward Russum III --- and great-grandfather of Martha (Russum) Downes --- was Edward Russum I, born in England and immigrated to America in 1677, settling in Talbot County, MD....

The letter you have fits with all the others we have from CP Russum. He was my gg-grandfather's younger brother. He did not make it home from the war. Another brother, James F. Russum, also did not make it home. Two other brothers, Isaac and Jacob Russum were in the war also. Both of them made it home, raised families and lived long lives. We have fourteen of CP Russum's letters home written between Aug 1861 soon after he enlisted up through late Oct 1863. He died near Chattanooga on 1 Nov 1863. He had been a school teacher in Ohio in the late 1850s and also in Illinois in 1860. During his time in the 38th Illinois Infantry he was promoted from Private to Sergeant to Lieutenant. We are thankful to have the text of this letter to add to our collection... If you'd like the text of his other letters I'd be very willing to share with you via e-mail.... JQ

East Texas Russums

I am looking for information on the Russum family that lived in Harrison and Panola Counties in the early to mid 1800's. As far as I can find they came from Alabama and moved to east Texas. The names that I have are Alabama S. Russum born about 1832 in Alabama married a James Terry in 1855 in Harrison County Texas and died in Jonesville Texas date unkown. She is found in the 1850 Harrison County Texas cenus in the household of her brother's widow Mrs E.A. Campbell along with her brother Thomas Russum. There is reason to beleive that Eliza Campbell's first husband was a Dr. J.J. Russum.

I would greatly appreciate anyone who has heard of this family or has more information on them.

Bernice SPink
BSpink8019@aol.com

I am not researching this family per se, however I thought I'd let you know there are some early Russems/Russums/Russoms from the Eastern Shore of Maryland: Edward, Elizabeth, John, Peter, Samuel, Sarah, Sidenham T., Thomas and Ann - also a Michael or Mitchell Russem. Dates range from 1721-1852.
