Re: Rutherford's Edinburgh Parishes of Liberton/Duddingston/and surrounds - Edinburgh - Scotland

Hi there.

I am trying to trace the FATHER of EUPHAN RUTHERFORD (AKA ELSPETH) 1758-1838. Married Thomas Hutson (Hoatson) at Old Gray Friars Church when she was 16. The marriage certificate with Thomas states her father is JAS RUTHERFORD (a farmer at Middle, Roxburghshire - is "Middle" the name of a farm?) but the only birth certificate I can find for a Euphan Rutherford states born 14/12/1758 Knowsouth, Bedrule (which is Roxburghshire), but father’s name is JOHN RUTHERFORD, not JAS (James) as stated on marriage certificate.
Looking at Euphan's will:
her brother: Alexander Rutherford, Writer, Jedburgh - William Rutherford is his eldest son, Alexander Rutherford is his second son. He also has daughters - two are called Elspeth and Elizabeth.
In 1841 Alexander is living at Castle Gate with Catherine 70, and Jean or Joan, 30.
her brother: William Rutherford, Jedburgh
her brother: Charles Rutherford - has a daugher called Janet Rutherford. In 1841 census he is living at Old Bridge End, Jedburgh and called "independent".

This is everything I have on her family.
We believe Euphan was a maid to the Duchess and worked between Dalkeith Palace and Bowhill House. She seemed to be
trusted and well known by the family as we found a letter
the Duke wrote to Thomas Hutson on which Euphan (Elspeth)
was allowed to add a P.S. in her own hand. Euphan's husband, Thomas Hutson (my GGGG Grandfather), was head game keeper at Bowhill House. (changed her name to Elspeth during this time - prob at request of the family)

I hope you can help me sort out who Euphan's parents are and where they came from and did.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Cheers, Linda Hutson, Melbourne, Australia

Hello Anne and thank you for your response. I am on the hunt now for 6 volumes of Scots Bibles that Eupham Rutherford left in her will to her friend, a Mrs Thomson who resided at Dalkeith Palace. Apparently Eupham worked for the Duke of Buccleuch (as did her husband Thomas Hutson) and was sometimes sent from Bowhill to Dalkeith when work demanded. I wish to know how I could find these bibles - I believe they may contain some information the family requires. Any tips?
Kind regards, Linda Hutson

Hi, I ws wonderering if you could help me fitting my ancestor into the Rutherford family tree. My g-grandmother was Mary Ann Rutherford, who married a Hazlerigg. She was b. in 1852, and had a sister Martha b. 1854. Their father was John R. Rutherford, and seems to have perished in the War Between the States.

Martha married a William McDonald, and had 2 sons William and Zeon. He seems to have dies, or moved away soon afterwards, as the census returns show Martha living with her parents and sons.

My aim is to link g-g-grandfather John R Rutherford into one of the Rutherford lines, as at present, I know nothing about his lineage. John R Rutherford married Rhoda G Young, who was the 2 girls' mother.

My name is Susan Mangum and I am a descendant of Martin Rutherford, . 1805 in Monkton. He married Nancy (?)Smith and had children George, Phebe, Augustine, July Ann, Martin, Alice before leaving for Muscatine IA about 1856. After Nancy died in 1866, he moved to Antrim County, MI and married Julia Levi(s)and had 2 more children Francis and Velma. I am still trying to connect him by some documentation to some parents there in Monkton. Please put me back in your email list.
Re: Lorenz Rutherford

I am working on a collateral line. I am a descendant of Martin Seymour Rutherford b. 1805 Addison County, VT. He moved about the same time of about 1850 to 1855 to Iowa. He located about 30 miles south of Dubuque in Muscatine County IA. I know that Ira Rutherford b. Monkton VT about 1813 moved to Dubuque about the same time as Lorenz. I've also seen his name as Lorenzo and there may also be another Lorenzo but not sure. Monkton was an area that was right in the middle of the War of 1812. It is where Fort Ticonderoga is located. This time frame may not have too much information for either of us. Please email me privately at susan3peaks@yahoo.com so that we can compare notes further. Look forward to working with you on this.
John RUTHERFORD, occupation Potter

John RUTHERFORD married Elizabeth MORRILL in Pontefract, Yorkshire in 1816. First child Harriet was born 1816 in Knottingley, Yks, the next child Elizabeth was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne c1818. Marriage certs for both state father John was a Potter. The 1841 census shows Elizabeth (nee Morrill) living in Knottingley, apparently a widow with John age 10 (born Yorkshire).
Rutherford is not a common name in Knottingley but is in Northumberland so John may have had family ties there and would probably have been born 1790's.
There may be more children to be found. I would like to hear from anyone who may have also found John Rutherford, a Potter, on a marriage cert or can provide any more clues as to his origins.

I noticed Wayne, WV first, sice that is where I was born and alot of my family still there. I am an Adkins. I notice you had a Saint Rutherford son of Oliver. Well, I have this family history book (well 3 altogether) called Ferguson Family Genealogy History of Wayne County they are in this book I have. It was written by Evelyn (Booth) & John Henderson Massie. Bits and peices here and there. Nothing real sound, but if I could be of service to you please contact me. My email is leoleigha75@yahoo.com If you do contact me please reference that Saint is in the big green book page 599.

He was a Revolutionary War Soldier and his wifes name was Mary Jameson. Anyway, I will have to check on info about Nancy and get back to you. I am working right now. I should have some time to help this evening. In the meantime, if there are any names you would like to look up that have an attachment to West Virginia check this site out. I have been working on Archibald Turnball Rutherford son of James Rutherford and Isabella Hood who in turn is the son of William Rutherford and Margaret Rae, which I know are all in your tree. I was very interested to see that your had found an Obituary and was wondering where you had found this and I would very much like to see it.

James was the son who had moved to Newcastle.

Hi there,

Last year I was taking photos in Scotland and took a few that did not have enough detail. I put the Rutherfoord family up on Find A Grave website, but many details are hard to read and thought someone in this Rutherford group might know the details. Names on the marker are: William, Agnes, John, and Grace. Plus a wife named Elizabeth Calloway. Are all Rutherfords traced back to the spelling with two oo's ? Or is this related to fjord as Scotland and Scandanavia were close at one time and still are in some respects. Anyway, here is the link to the site and I have attached my so so photo. cheers, Jon Melusky

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=81...

I am seeking a Rutherford connection. The Joseph Rutherford that I seek was born in Ireland, circa 1832. He died in St Louis MO of Small pox in 1862. My reason for contacting this site specifically is that he married Emelia/Emily/Emma Craig (?) who was born in Brookville KY in 18 Aug 1832 and died in St Joseph MO 04 Jan 1912. Emma who I had to work backward to even find anything, was married to a William Diamond/Dimond after the death of Joseph and they lived in Doniphan Co. Kansas until his death. Joseph Rutherford and Emma must have married in Kentucky. They had two daughters, Catherine Maria Rutherford and Theresa aka Tracy, and Teresy on some census. I have a total brick wall here. I would like to know when Joseph and Emma married, the birth dates of the children and if I missed children between census. I would like to know more about Joseph, and Emily/Emma/Emelia. I suspect that Joseph ended up in KY due to relatives he had there. Please forward any information no matter how small. My email address is permanent and I keep it only for Genealogy. Thanks

Married John Campbell (1859) and they had a son, my grandfather, who immigtrated to Chicago in 1884. My grandfather owned a printing company..so I thought your mention of the Chicago Tribune might have been actually The Campbell Printing Co.

Jane McKnight Campbell died in 1912 and is buried here in Chicago.
Bob,

John Wesley Rutherford is my 3rd grandfather, his daugther Wilda Alice was my grandfather's mother. I am researching the family history and I am having difficulty establishing proof that John served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
