I guess I have nothing further to offer but have the same puzzle regarding my gggrandfather Edwin Ruthven Long of Lockport, NY. Seeing as your post is over 8 years ago I'm not sure you'll view this belated response but just wanted to add my two cents. The name Ruthven was used several times in succeeding generations as a middle name in my family right down to my own brother using Van as his middle name based on the Ruthven of earlier times. Anyway..not sure why the Moms of long ago felt so inclined to name their sons after a fictional character from the Scottish Chiefs but it must have had quite an impact...eh?

Dave

Hi,

I am looking for information about William Ruthven, possibly born in London, circa 1787. He was married to Kitty and came to Cape Town, South Africa in 1820 on the Duke of Marlborough.

He had the following children: William, George, John and Louisa (born in South Africa).

I wish to find out more information about William's lineage in the UK.

Thanks!

As of this particular moment I am out of town and will be glad to send you what I have when I return. It is a shame the only names we could come up with were Robert and/or William.lol No originality. I am of the line of Edmund Ruffin III whose son George was my 3rd or 4th great-grandfather. Sorry I took so long. Sherry

Hi Heather

That message about William Ruthven is very old, I have probably lots more information since then. I have noticed your name on Ancestry recently but not a lot of people make contact.

It gets confusing with the Mowat family as my husband great grandmother name was Isabella Mowat who married Gilbert Ruthven who had who had 8 children in New Zealand who came to Victoria Australia, and the other Mowat family who went to US. I speek to both Families via email. The second Mowat family was my husbands great Aunt Diana Donnelina Ruthven who married Arthur Ward Mowat in Victoria they then immigrated to Seattle.

I hope this is not to confusing, If you have any questions just email me.

Regards

Cheryl Ruthven
She married Irvin Guinty, and their son, Walter Guinty, was my grandfather. Do you have any other information on Ann Ruthven, or her parents? I cannot find any resources that can connect Ann to Sime Ruthven as her father. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks, K.

Wilma was the daughter of William Manning & Camma Lucretia Booth, grandaughter of William Manning & Margaret Beere, gr-gramdaughter of Ann Ruthven/Charles Beere. Her research done in Scotland shows that Sime did have children.

I found a little more info on Anne:
Dec. 2, 1844, Mr. Beere was united in marriage to Miss Annie Ruthven, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Aug. 27, 1820, and came to New York in 1838 with a sister, her parents having died when she was a child. We couldn't find which Sime she came from. Have you found anything yet? Thanks, Kathleen C.

Sherry,

Hello, I have been tracing the lineage of my Grandfather, James Floyd Ruffin, of Hugo, Oklahoma. Read your post on the Ruthven/Ruffin conncection and wanted to see if you have any information that may be of benefit to my search.

Here is what I have so far:

My Grandfather was James Floyd Ruffin, his Father was James Tebe Ruffin, his Father was James Johnson Ruffin, his Father was William Whitmel Ruffin, his Father was James T. Ruffin, his Father was William Ruffin (1735 - 1813), his Father William Ruffin(1708 - 1781), his Father was William Ruffin (1683 - 1739), his Father was Robert Ruffin (1646 - 1694), whose Father was William Ruffin (1617 - 1674; I believe this is the William Ruffin who escaped England on the ship Assurance in 1635 and may be the descendant you mentioned in your post), I go back further but the last name I listed is where it get's a little confusing. Have you been able to trace William Ruffin (1617 - 1674) back to William Ruthven II (1528 - 1584)? There seems to be a skip in the generation, perhaps William Ruthven II had a Son by the name of William Ruthven, whose Son William Ruffin fled to Virginia in 1635?

I have been unable to make appropriate connection between William Ruthven and William Ruffin.

Any information you would be willing to share is appreciated and I will reciprocate with the research I have.

Thank you,

Doug Harris

I am a descendant of William Ruthven who changed his last name to Ruffin to evade capture by the English. I have been able to trace the Ruthven/Ruffin line back as far as the year 1000A.D. Leofwine was the father of, Thor the Longus, Lord of Tippermuir and superior Lord of the lands of Crawford. Swain(Swane, called Succonus) was the son of Thor. I have a direct line from there to today. THat is over 1000 years. Would love to hear from you Sherry Dixon
Rains.

Hello!

I am the son of Glen Ruthven. I have no information on my family. My father never talked about his famly. I knew my uncles Bob and Orville, but not very well. I only saw my aunt Lucille once or twice in my life. We were not a close family. Though my grandmother lived near by in Junction City, Oregon, I did not know her well either. I never met my grandfather. I believe that he died of alcohalism before I was born.

James Ruthven
Portland, Oregon

The Ruthven name in my family begins with my great grandmother, who was Sallie Annette Ruthven, married to George Ruthven. George's Father was Edwin Volney Ruthven, and mother was Fybia LeGrand Parker. Family legend has it that Edwin's father's name was William, and was born in Scotland. I've searched for some time, and not found much information. My great grandmother's bible says his wife's name was Prudence and last name looks like Jones (not an easy name to trace either!)Do you have any information about any of these people.

Hello Janice,

I am currently studying a short course with the Open University - start writing Family History - and came across your posting about Sime Ruthven. i just wanted to say that I will be taking up searching the Ruthven line, but was interested in researching something about Alexander John Ruthven the well known printer who was a half-brother of Sime and James Ruthven. I am descended from Sime's brother anyway. James Ruthven, Sime's brother is my great great great grandfather, i think, not my grandfather or my great grandfather nor yet my great great grandfather, but my great great grandfather's father. How on earth do you find more about Sime Ruthven, like how did you know he moved to Hull, that's the sort of detail, i couldn't imagine being easy to find....Good to be in touch with you. Iona22@ntlworld.com. Will let you know how i progress and if i can find out any information for you. ..my father was born in 1911, i was born in 1967, he died in 93 so, that will makes things more difficult..

I have been researching My Ruthven heritage for about tem years and have uncovered considerable information however much of it conflicting with each other . I would be pleased to get information on the Ruthven’s in Scotland.
Hears what I have the I feel confident about:

Robert Ruthven born 1777 married Margaret Thompson 1 July 1798 was a weaver in Glasgow moved to Canada on ship David leaving Glasgow 19 May 1821 with wife and four sons Robert, Alexander, George and William leaving behind John who I believe married Margaret Bernie.

I have copies of three letters to Robert Ruthven addressed Dear uncle, Glasgow 15 April 1842 requesting information about the new country (Canada) it goes on to state she married a William McGregor form Stirling 15 years past stating she had eight children of which 3 died It appears by the letter her sister Margaret, brother John died leaving only herself and brother Peter also mentioned is Margaret Turner, who married John Alexander of Sterling

Letter #2 dated 24 August 1842 Requesting additional information about (Canada) Cost of living, etc. talks of Margaret Turner , John Birnie, Margaret John being a salesman in spirits Talks of Roberts sister Margaret’s son Henry Paterson and his sister Mary residing in Tollcross. Mary is married to William McBride with family of eleven, ten living she further states Margaret is married a second time to an Irishman, William Shanks and is residing in the east end of Gallowgate. Margaret Slon is married to a surgeon and moved to America about 4 years ago

Letter #3 Tollcross Sept 17 1849 addressed to dear Aged Uncle and Aunt
Your brother George Tomson died some years ago. His son Alexander listed and went away, William Thompson died two years back of fever. My mother
(Mary Ruthven) died 8 years past, her sister Lile died 5 years before my mother and her son Peter at the same time. Margaret Turner, her daughter, was married to John Alexander he had money and property but lost 300 pounds by chasinaman. He died and she is living with sons John and Peter Alexander. Her brother John Turner is in Insbrick and owns a large spirit seler. William Mgour and Janet Ruthven send respects. Your sister Margret Ruthven was married to William Montieth, he went away to America on year 23 and took two children with him. He left Margaret Slon upon the cares of this world, but God was with her. She learned the steam loom weaving and continued till she was 17 years. Her father returned found her and gave her a good education My sister Margaret Paterson died of cholera along with her son Robert, William and his wife and child all with in 3 days. I know this is a lengthy document but I’m in hopes some names well ring a cord. I have Para phased much of the letters concentrating on people.
Robert Shaver

Do you have any? I would be glad to share any I have. You can email privately (sooz28@yahoo.com).

Sue Wilbur
