Hannah Rutledge, possible name origin

Hello. Do you know if Hannah Chew was somehow connected to My 5th Great Grandmother? Her name was Hannah Rutledge. She may have been named after the Hannah Chew you mentioned. My 5th Great G'ma was born in SC around 1795. So this could be a possibility. I have no information on her parents.

I am wondering if my 5th Great Grandmother was a slave and/or descendant of the Rutledge family.

Any amount of help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Rutledge Family-John Carter's Descendants

I am the grand-daughter of Albert Little Rutledge born in TX died in CA (1911-1979). His parents were James Carter Rutledge (1862-1915) and Mary Anne Bowles (1872-1917).

I would like to know about my grandfather if anyone has information. I am specifically trying to obtain a photo of Albert for our family album.

Also, I have also heard that we have Native American ancestry on this side. I am not sure about James Carter's direct ancestry.

Is it possible that Mary Anne was related to Chief Bowles out of Texas? He was half Cherokee and Scottish.

I have not been able to find any info on James Carter Rutledge's father, only his mother Elizabeth Russel.

Any information is appreciated.

On a side note, I saw many postings here from a person named "Sunny". I would like to get into contact with her since we share the same grandparents. I have sent her two emails yet they were bounced back.

I'm sorry I do not know....I found in the 1910 census for my husband's grandfather a percentage of his Indian blood. It was on a page below the census sheet, I could not find the same thing for either Abe or Julia...but the above mentioned census was done in Oklahoma and not Kansas.

That will be great. I have also been told we have an Indian and one of the dna tests show Indian markers. Also was told they had to leave either North or South Carolina because of a Rutledge marrying an Indian woman. A dna test would show if we are related to the signer of the Declaration but I don't think so.

First of all, thanks for going to the trouble to post this information. I am a descendant of John Whitfield, thought to be born about 1770 in North Carolina, and Kissia Rutledge, born ca. 1783 in Georgia. Family notes say that John died in 1850 in Cannon Co., Tennessee. In 1860, Kissia was living with her son Allen in Izard Co., Arkansas. It is said she died there in 1863. Thought I'd see if anyone can shed more light on them.

Hello Regena,

Penelope Rutledge Rowland was my gg grandmother. I am very interested in what documentation you may have regarding Abraham Rutledge of South Carolina. There seems to be a line that genealogists have published, but I cannot prove or disprove any of it. You sound like you may have the answers that I need to settle this in my mind.

Penelope had a daughter also named Penelope who was a sister of my g grandmother, Martha Ann Rowland Buck. She was born in AL, lived in and had her children in TX and died in Carlsbad, NM where the family had all relocated.

I would really like to hear from you.

Patty Sims

Hello Rudy,

My Rutledges are the same family that Regena has posted just above your post. That Penelope Rutledge married James S Rowland in Wilcox County, AL. James died there and in 1860 Penelope (now Rowland) got on a ship in Mobile, AL with all of her ten children and sailed to Brownsville, TX.

I don't know if she had any relatives there, but I don't know why she would have taken so many children by herself to a country she did not know.

I would appreciate and information you may have that may connect these families.

Thank you very much,
Patty Sims

Researching Grady A Rutledge possible son of Anderson Rutledge

I am trying to research my greatgrandfather. I am not sure who his parents are. I have found several census that I am sure is him but each one list a different age and birth date. I am sure he was born in Ill but moved to Arkansas at some point and married my grandmother a Sarah J Wilson in Sevier County around Lockesburg and Dequeen area. I have found a possible match for parents as Anderson Rutledge and a Sarah Emery. Can anyone else help clear this up.

Oh yeah I have found his name as Grady A Rutledge but I have also found a listing for a Alonzo Rutledge which is where the connection to Anderson and Sarah Rutledge come into the picture. And the birth places for the parents pretty much match with them as well.

my email is

nowak@tctc.com

Thanks

Paula

I can resolve some of your questions concerning Abraham Rutledge and the McHaney and Champion families. I am a descendant of Isaac Rutledge who was Abraham's brother and my cousin wife is a Champion descendant.

The families came from Clarke and Wilcox Counties in Alabama. They went overland to Hidalgo County, Texas. This was between 1850 and 1860. At the same time the family of Penelope Rutledge Rowland also went to Hidalgo County. Also a Nathaniel Jackson and his wife Maria also went. The story goes that the Jackson family was of Choctaw descendant and they were tryint to escape problems with prejudice they had in Alabama. These families later started their own church and settlement in Cameron County, Texas.

I can fill in more if you will e-mail me at regena46@yahoo.com

Regena Williamson

This is a long shot as your post was many years ago, but Ernest Rutledge was my grandfather, Malinda was my great grandmother, and I do have related information to share if you are still actively searching. Walter Rutledge married Malinda Heistand Rohrer and their children were Ernest, Mary and Lillian. Ernest Rutledge married Gertrude Krug. Areas were Ireland, England, Rapho Twp., Lancaster Cty., Pa., and Philadelphia, Pa. It's a long colorful history regarding occupations, families also with info regarding Malinda's divorce and remarriage.

DNA testing

My wife Sondra Sue Rutledge (Hamelin) -- daughter of Howard Elmer R. (Leland Elmer 1900, Albert Andrew 1874, Nathan Franklin 1837, William Dean 1806, John 1768, William 1732) -- never takes no for an answer (or even "maybe"). I've told her taking her line back to Ireland or wherever appears undoable. But she is fed up with waiting for a breakthrough in trying to link James Rutlidge (bef. 1711) to someplace in Europe.

I suggested a DNA test, which I have done for the Hamelin line, with fascinating and unexpected results. She does have some male cousins available for testing. I'm just curious if any Rutledges have had this done to your knowledge, and whether it gave any hint of the family's
origins (Irish, Scottish, Welsh, whatever)...?

-- Joe Hamelin, Riverside CA

Heirs mentioned were William Rutledge, Mrs. William Faulkner and the minor heirs of Mrs. Robert Hunicutt. If William Rutledge is nephew of W. R. She was the widow of Robert Eaky.

William R. Middleton had land grants in both Cooke Co. and Mason Co., Texas. Thomas Rutledge, Robert Eaky, and Wilson Rhodes had land grants in Cooke Co., Texas also.

How are the Middletons, Rutledges, Davises, Rhodes, Eakys, etc. related beyond the facts above?
