I believe my family to have come from somewhere in or near Yorkshire, before they immigrated to Canada. Would either of you have information on a Thomas Rycroft, who would have been born circa 1835-1840. He married Mary Midgley, perhaps while still in England. They were my great-great grandparents. I have information on their descendants if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Krystal Rycroft

Another Rycroft, wonderful!

Fascinating to know, especially since I believe Joseph's middle name is likely to have been William as well. It's a family name today too.

I don't have much hard evidence, but my suspicions have been that they were from somewhere in Yorkshire. I realise that's a large area, but I haven't been able to get anything before Joseph, except another suggestion that his father may have been named Thomas (another family name to this day). He may also have had a brother named Thomas, and a sister, but I can't find her given name.

I also don't know why they came to Canada, but I'd love to find some connection! One problem I've had is that there are very few Rycrofts left (around here) who are old enough to question.

If you have any further information, Mark, it'd be very much appreciated. I should get in contact with the Public Records Office at some point.

Thank you,
Krystal Rycroft

In the 1880 US census the John Rycroft family is transcribed for the index as "Rycraft." William appears with his family as "W. Allen Rycraft." His age is entered as 30, implying a birth date of 1850. Obviously that does not match the birthdate shown in other entries for the same family. In 1880 the family is in the Village of Bay View (Milwaukee County) Wisconsin.

Joseph Rycroft, St. Thomas Ontario.

Looking for my great gradfather Joseph Rycroft b. 1859. He married Annie Stewart in 1889. They had seven children: Leigh Stanley, Ernest (who fought in WWI), Ivan, Pearl, Vera, Beatrice, and my grandfather, Glen, b. 1911.

They lived in the St. Thomas area, until they moved to Brant County circa 1913. I am 80% sure he was born in Canada, but I have been unable to get back any farther than his birth.

Any information would be much appreciated.

My family (Rycroft) lived in the St. Thomas area until c.1913.
My great grandfather is Joseph Rycroft, who married Annie Stewart in St. Thomas in 1889. He had 6 children, including my grandfather Glen. Does this line help? I haven't been able to get anything back farther than Joseph, but I'm trying.

I am engaged to marry William Joseph Rycroft in June 2005. I am very interested in family history, but haven't been able to get much information out of his immediate family. He was born in Sarnia Ontario, June 27 1953. He has a sister Debra Rycroft born May 1955. His mother's name is Laura, born August 1930. He isn't certain if his father is still living in Ontario, as he hasn't been in contact with him for FOURTY years! Does anyone know of this family and their history?

None of those names sound familiar. My family name is Irish and lived in Newton, MA at the turn of the century. There was an English Rycroft family who also moved into Newton at that time. They had been living in the Worcester area. That family was trained in millwork. They had arrived here because an Englishman had bought a water wheel activated mill in Worcester and only hired Englishmen whom he could trust.
I have not been to the state archives in over a year. I'm not sure when I will be able to get there again, in the near future.

Sorry I couldn't fill in any gap. Off hand, I'd say that these names are English, which should limit your search. There are no English Rycrofts in this area now.

Hello Richard,
I've just begun researching my husband's line. I have very little info. as of yet. I have discovered that his grandfather, James H. PETERS was m. to Anna, who was b. in Mass. abt.1897 to Margaret RYCROFT. Marg. arrived in 1881 according to the 1920 census, but I'm not sure of port of arrival.

Knowing people gave more thought to what they named their children back then, it might be helpful to know that James and Anna's three sons were named Herbert, Raymond and Robert. I'm guessing Anna's father may have had one of those first names. Do you have any information on these RYCROFTS?
