Warwick New York Ryerson Family

My Grandfather, Donald Clifford Hyatt was born in 1913 to Fred Hyatt and Ethel Quackenbush Ryerson Hyatt. Fred and Ethel married in 1912 but Ethel was first married to Asa Ryerson and shows up with him in Warwick in the 1910 Census. The 1910 Census shows they have 3 children. A daughter, Elizabeth E, age 5, a son J Walter, age 3 and a son Loyd T, 3 months. I haven't been able to find out what happened to Asa but somewhere in my research I did find that the children were living with the Quackenbush family. Whether they ever lived with Fred, Ethel and their 2 sons, I don't know because Ethel died in 1915.

Does anyone know what has happened to the half siblings of my grandfather? He has passed away as has my father. I would really like to know what happened to Asa and especially the children of my great grandmother.

If anyone would like to correspond and share info or knows what happened to the long lost kids, please email me at slheider3@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Susan Heider

Are you still there? I was busy and distracted in 2006. My first wife was dieing. Also Paul Stenscheol was very helpful to me. Since then I have remarried and Learned a lot about my family. Then I thought that Robert was my Grandfather. Now I know that he was my Greatgrandfather. I was adopted at birth by Gilbert Ryerson and his Wife Ruthanne (Hoenisch) Ryerson. Gilbert's older sister was Lena; her name was Valborg Nicolena (Ryerson) Benzinger. I have since learned that she was my Grandmother. Let me know if you want more. By the way Paul Stenscheol is an Axelson descendant.

Our line also descend from Nicholas whose other son, John R. Ryerson is our line. Nicholas was married to Sarepta Simonson. I do not have any info on Christopher's line but can give you information from John R. side. John R. did reside in Huron County Ohio until his death in 1932. He served in the Civil War and was with General Sherman.

Theodocia Earle Ryerson was my Great Great Great Great Grandmother. The only thing I can add to your origional query though is that I believe the marker for the "Old Ryerson House" in Goffle Brook Park is where the "homestead at the Goffle" was that is mentioned in the geneology. That would be in present day Hawthorne, NJ; Passaic County. The Goffle river today goes through Hawthorne, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff, and i'm not sure how large the farm was. Hassel did move to Sussex County, but after Theodocia passed away.

I hope that helps a little.

Thanks so much for your reply. You give her birth date as 1740--do you have a source for this? I have been unable to pin down a birth date that precisely. BTW, Dorothy is not Theodocia's child. Dorothy is the child of Hessel Ryerson's second wife, Catherine Van Vechten--Dorothy was baptized at Totowa 30 Nov 1789. The Dutch sometimes named the first child of a second marriage after the former, deceased spouse.

The Ryerson genealogy says that Theodocia was Quaker, but I have been unable to find any evidence of that. I suspect, but cannot prove, that her parents were Enoch Earl and Gertje Vanderhoof. If you have any information on parents it would be greatly appreciated. Finally, I believe that Hessel Ryerson died in Sussex County, rather than Bergen County.

I had my husband do an dna test as Stephen Rierson/Ryerson was his GGG Grandfather & I also couldn't locate his parents or siblings. I found that he is actually a Louw/Lowe/Low & had close (66 out of 67 markers) with Lowe's. Doing additional checking I believe that Stephen Ryerson/Rierson was really Willem Louw born 1762 in Dutchess Co. His parents were Johannes Louw & Aaltje Hoogland. Aaltje Hoogland's grandmother was Nelltje (Cornelia) Adriaence (Reyerszen) (see page 266 of the Ryerson Genealogy by Albert Winslow Ryerson). I am now in the process of linking my husband to the various close Lowe/Low/Louw ancestors.

Willem Louw aka Stephen Ryerson/Rierson

I have been looking for Stephen Ryerson's parents for some time. Since I was at a roadblock like many others I had my husband do an dna test which came back with the closest match (10 generations-250 years or approx. 1750/1760) was with a Louw/Lowe/Low. Since Stephen was using Ryerson/Rierson as a surname I checked the "Ryerson Genealogy" by Albert Winslow Ryerson 1916 for any Louw/Lowe/Lows. On page 266 I found an Aeltje Hoogland married to Johannis Low of Fishkill, Dutchess Co. N.Y. In checking that family I found that they did have a son, Willem Louw born June 29, 1762 & Baptized on May 22, 1763 per the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of New Hackenack. Willem's grandmother would be Nelltje (Cornelia) Adrianence (Reyerszen).
Johannis Low & family were British Loyalist who moved to Nova Scotia whereas Willem Louw aka Stephen Ryerson fought for New York in the fall of 1777 under Capt. Luddington.
If any Ryerson/Rierson's from the Stephen Ryerson family had a dna test (males only-direct line) please let me know.

I believe I have found the parents of Stephen Rierson/Ryeson. I had my husband, who is a direct decendent, do a dna test. His closest match was 10 generations or approx 250 years (1750/1760). Since the match was with a Lowe I checked the Ryerson Genealogy written by Albert Winslow Ryerson in 1916 & found on page 266 under Nelltje (Cornelia) Adriaence (Reyerszen) a granddaughter named Aeltje Hoogland who married a Johannis Low of Fishkill, Dutchess Co., N.Y. I found that Johannis Low & Aeltje Hoogland had a son named Willem Louw born June 29, 1762 per the Reformed Dutch Church of New Hackensack. I believe that Willem Louw changed his name to Stephen Rierson/Ryerson because his parents were British Loyalists who moved to Nova Scotia, Canada. Willem fought under Capt. Luddington of N.Y. Has anyone else in the Stephen Rierson direct line (male) done a dna test?

Hi,

I am running the Sturgeon Point Photo History Project. Both Maj-Gen Dr G.S.A. Ryerson and his son, Eric Ryerson, had cottages in the community. Dr. Ryerson and his wife Mary spent their first documented summer here in 1886 - the summer after the North West Rebellion. Eric actually sold insurance to a number of the cottagers.

I have been able to locate one picture of daughter Laura at the cottage, but I would appreciate being able to speak with family members.

Please contact me at jlk.kars@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Lili

I've been checking my husband's dna profile with others & the closest is 10 generations (approx 250 years) with a Low (Lowe,Louw) family. There was a John (Johannis) Low (Lowe) that was married to a Aeltje Hoogland born 1740 whose grandmother was Nelltje (Cornelia) Adriaence (Reyerszen).
I am Gordon L Ryerson III and although I do not know anything about a Stephen Ryerson, my understanding of our family lineage is from costal Holland about the time of the establishment of New Amsterdam in what is now NY.

It also appears that there have over the years, been a number of different spellings of the name, likely phonetic spellings of local languages and dialects.

Also looking at the history of peoples in Holland prior to the founding of colonies in America, there was a lot of movement from what is now Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany to Holland - primarily for job seekers since Holland at the time was a leading economic power and trading capital for the known world (also religiously tolerant).

Not sure about the Irish bit since that is new to me. Scandanavian, Dutch and German are all consistant with most Ryersons or names of similar spelling.

We need all the help we can get so if anyone may have a lead let us know. I'll check out your line to see if they have a Stephen Rierson/Ryerson or however its spelled. Others have mentioned that their families have heard that they had Rierson/Ryerson ancestors that were Irish. Since my husband's dna test we know he is part Irish & the rumors are probably true.
