Hi
I have not yet built our tree on this site, but briefly I start with John abt 1490 and Agnes at Quinton, they have Robarte b. abt 1516 who marries first Margrit then Alice Rogers. Robert and Alice have amongst others John b 1567 who marries Jone. They have William who has a sister Ann and marries an Ann - both sister and wife look like the same person !! They have Richard 1633 who marries Alice. They have John 1670 who marries Martha. They have a William 1696 (Birmingham)who has your John 1726 and marries Martha Ruston. John and Martha also have John 1703 (Stratford)who marries Sarah Tinler and they ahve a John 1729 (Stratford) who marries Ann Seeley and their son John b 1759 is adopted by their father's cousin John 1726 after his parent's death. Good luck. This is the "Pebworth" line.Let me know how you get on. Also look at Peter Grant's tree on Ancestry - that is also the Pebworth line. There is also another theory - probably correct - that the parents of William 1696 and Elizabeth Sillitoe are William and Miss Fincher, not John and Martha. Has that completely thrown you? Sorry !!

I was intrigued by your post. Like many others I expect, I have 'lifted' the 3 generations after John 1567 without questioning why they should have moved to Pebworth and then back to Bearley for birth of William (x2) in 1693/96. I have John b. 1726 married to Martha Ruston not Ann Seeley, have I got that wrong? I also have (unsourced) parents of John 1567 as Robert Ryland 1520 and Alice Rogers 1530. Any comment?

Hi Walter
I have read many of your articles on the Rylands with great interest. Do you have a record of the Rylands of Bearley before John Ryland 1726/9 of Stratford who married Ann Seeley back to John Ryland abt 1567 married to Jone?

I am a 4 X gt grandaughter of the John Ryland of Stratford b.1759 adopted by his father's cousin John 1729 the wire drawer of Birmingham. Any assistance would be most appreciated. ps I have found a copy of the will of Ann Seeley's uncle, Charles Smith a gentleman, wherein he leaves Ann money and various cottages and lands to other relatives - v interesting.

Descendants of John Ryland b.1567 of Bearley and Jone his wife

Looking at the descendants of John Ryland b abt 1567 of Bearley, there are some family trees on Ancestry who put the next 3 generations as being born at Pebworth. (William b, 1593, Richard b.1633 and John b. 1670.) Another tree has different descendants all from Barford or Bearley. Interestingly all these link up with John Ryland b. 1726 married to Ann Seeley.
As Edmund Burke refers to "the Rylands of Bearley" and mentions that they were at Ryland's Hill Snitterfield (which covers Bearley) "for many centuries" before 1770s when the last of the estate was sold, can these Pebworth descendants be correct? Apparently many of the Bearley Parish records have been lost. Does anyone have a record of the descendants of John abt 1567 of Bearley and Jone his wife that uphold the notion that these Rylands lived at Bearley for many centuries. I am looking for Rylands between 1567 and 1729. I would be most grateful. Thanks

Hi Sam,

I am in awe of your research. I hope to eventually have the knowledge base and records to discuss the Ryland ancestry with you. I'm in the beginning stages of researching this side of my family, however, I recognize the information the original poster listed as part of my family's oral tradition, Elizabeth Ryland being a part of this. I'm now in the process of trying to verify things. Below is what I have been able to confirm thus far regarding William Kendall Baker.

William Kendall Baker (b. 2 Jan 1848 in IN, d. 26 Jan 1930 in CO) married Elizabeth Anne Burns (b. Aug 1860 in IA) on 7 Mar 1880 in Labette County, KS

They had the following children:
Della Florence Baker b. 10 Feb 1881 in Altamont, KS, d. 12 Jul 1935 in St. Louis, MO
George H. Baker b. Oct 1883 in KS
William E. Baker b. Dec 1887 in KS
Charles Albert Baker b. 27 Dec 1891 in Altamont, KS, d. Jun 1891 in St. Louis, MO
Erma E Baker b. 2 Oct 1894, d. 3 Dec 1894
Nora M. Baker b. 4 Nov 1895 d. 8 Jul 1897
Raymond F. Baker b. Sept 1898 in Missouri

Generally speaking, the oral tradition that I've heard all my life is that many of these family members moved throughout Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, and Colorado.

I could use some hints for navigating Rootsweb. Every time I visit, I get overwhelmed and lost. Thanks for the link to your tree. I don't know if I'd be able to find it on my own.

Lisa

Yes that's right: the clergyman was a Dissenting Minister - the Rylands had joined his congregation in 1804 and 27 members of the Ryland family were baptised at the Minister's chapel. Octavius himself appears once as a witness at a baptism at the chapel. The Minister was William Bengo Collyer - my website (imperfectly) tells the story (see www.wbcollyer.org - I say 'imperfectly' because the site is a work in progress). Collyer was the subject of a scandal earlier in his life and it was this that Octavius was playing on in his attempt to exhort money.

There was an Augustine Blake in Middlesex Co., VA who married Sarah Robinson 22 Dec 1799. But you probably know about that. Sometimes Ann is a nick name especially if she had the same name as her mother? I've seen Ann used when the given name was Hannah or Nancy. Doesn't this confuse the female line. My line shows an Ann "Nancy" Ryland born 11 Oct 1755 to Joseph and Mary Ryland (Essex Co., VA.) Sometimes brothers' family use sister's name.
Sorry nothing new.

Building on the careful research of a small group of family-researchers, a new family tree/database is being developed, through which we are attempting to trace all descendants of Paulus Reylandt (also known as Paul Ryland), and his wife Louisa. We invite you to review this file, and to assist with its development during the weeks, months and years ahead.

The file (now 2,279 persons), devoted solely to Descendants of Paulus Reylandt, has been posted both to Ancestry.com and to RootsWeb as follows:

The URL for Ancestry.com is http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/30254071/family

The URL for RootsWeb.com is http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Currently the database is incomplete and unfortunately it undoubtedly includes a number of errors.

If you identify errors, omissions or misleading suggestions to the reader, or if you have suggestions that will improve this record of this family, please contact me at saylesworth@shaw.ca advising of the the changes you would recommend and providing sources for your findings.

Similarly, if you are willing to share information for inclusion here, please send a Family Tree Maker file (preferred) or a GEDCOM file to saylesworth@shaw.ca. We strongly request that you list sources in your file for your findings.

We will update this database from time to time. As it is refined, perhaps it will become a significant resource for all who share an interest in this extended family.

MY OWN LINEAGE FROM PAULUS REYLANDT

This database/family tree was created over the past fourteen years. I descend from ANDREW RYLAND and PHOEBE BURKHART. Andrew was son of Paulus Reylandt, as follows:

1. Paulus Reylandt & Louisa (also known as Paul Ryland and Louisa)
2. Andrew Ryland & Phoebe Burkhart
3. William Ryland & Elizabeth Lippincott
4. Rachel Ann Ryland & Thomas Stanton
5. Martha Jane Stanton & George Nickle
6. Samuel Clarence Nickle & Gudrun Olga Mylada Simonson
7. Agnes Alice Nickle & Robert Wesley Aylesworth (my parents)
8. Myself

As noted above, although I descend from his son Andrew, this family tree attempts to track the descendants of all of his children.

I wish to acknowledge, with appreciation, my extensive indebtedness to all from whom I have learned and borrowed.

Particular appreciation is expressed to the following persons, who have provided information about the earliest generations of this family: John F. Ryland, "JA", Louis Fackler, Phyllis Hughes, Norma Buida, Pat Ryland and H. H. Ryland (even though I have now moved away from some of the core conclusions reached by H. H. Ryland). Their findings and reflections are quoted extensively in the NOTES-sections relating to members of the earliest generations.

The information on later generations comes from this same group, from personal research, from many family trees that are posted on Ancestry.com, and from census and vital-records that are available primarily through the internet.

We hope that this new tree proves to be of interest and value to the many members of this Ryland family.

Best wishes from

Sam Aylesworth
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Hand-Book, Generation 6 ... comments from a Canadian cousin

Hello,

I would be a distant cousin of yours. I descend from Andrew Ryland, who was a brother to the often-mentioned Sylvester Ryland.

I never corresponded with the man named Walter Ryland, who posted the initial summary of the family-tree-information assembled by H. H. Ryland. However I've been told by others that Walter was a wonderful person, and a very diligent researcher. Sadly he passed away some years ago, and apparently no one else has emerged as the 'oversee & champion' of the Ryland section of RootsWeb.

When studying this family, I too began with the newsletters published by H. H. Ryland. Copies had been given to me by an aunt. However, I now believe that H. H. Ryland was very probably wrong in his understanding of the earliest members of our family in the USA. H. H. Ryland traced our lineage to a Lord Ryland. Many family members have found evidence indicating that our first ancestor in the USA was named Paulus Reylandt, and that he came from Germany aboard the a ship called "Patience" in 1750. I have reviewed this evidence and now accept that it is accurate.

FYI, my wife and I made a trip to Pennsylvania four years ago, searching for more information about the Ryland family, and I met some members of our family while there, including one granddaughter of H. H. Ryland. I share this only to clarify that I have been diligent in searching for information about the family. I found the church which my Andrew attended, and I located his headstone. There is no doubt that the members of that Church were German families.

My own findings are summarized on RootsWeb at the following address: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=samaylesw... If you are not familiar with RootsWeb, please let me know and I'd be pleased to clarify how you move around on that site. In particular, I'd ask that you review my notes on Paulus Reylandt, as they provide the foundation for the information about his descendants. To find these Notes go to: (1) the letter "R" in the Index, (2) then "Reylandt" in the list of names, (3) then select "Reylandt, Paulus". Scroll down and you'll see my notes. You'll also see a listing of his children, and the links will take you to further information. (I have much additional information about the family that I have not yet been able to add to my family tree for posting to RootsWeb. As you will know, keeping up is a never ending challenge!!)

Other researchers have now submitted information on Paulus Reylandt and some of his sons to the DAR, and this new information has been accepted by the DAR. Thus, people who previously presented lists of their own ancestry which led to Lord Ryland can now correct that information AND THEY WILL STILL BE ACCEPTED BY THE DAR AS MEMBERS. John Ryland, of San Francisco, can provide more information about this work with the DAR.

My own line from Paulus Reylandt runs as follows:
(1) Paulus Reylandt and his wife Louisa
(2) Andrew Ryland/Reiland and his wife Phoebe Burkhart
(3) William Ryland/Riland and his wife Elizabeth Lippincott (whose ancestors were a well-known Quaker family)
(4) Rachel Ann Ryland/Riland and her husband Thomas Stanton (I know only a little about this Thomas Stanton; he came from Wales I believe.) This couple moved to Canada from Pennsylvania in about 1865 with some but NOT all of their children. I have been able to trace a few but not many of their descendants, other than my own direct line.
(5) Martha Jane Stanton and George Nickle (whose father came from Ireland). This couple married in Thamesville Ontario, and later lived in Philadelphia, Detroit, Winnipeg, Calgary, Los Angeles and then back in Calgary).
(6) Agnes Alice Nickle and Robert Wesley Aylesworth (my parents). They met and married in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
(7) Myself, Samuel William Aylesworth and my wife Diane

Best wishes to you as you pursue further information on your family. If I can be of further assistance, or you have comments on my own approach to this family history, please write again. I can be reached directly at saylesworth@shaw.ca

Sam Aylesworth
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Thank you so much Karen. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Donna Lee Moon's mother, Anna Harriet HEPTING's first marriage was to my grandmother's brother, George Harrison CASTEEL. Wouldn't it be wonderful if one of Donna Lee's children had some information from their grandmother about her first marriage! Wishful thinking.
: )
Priscilla

Hi there

I am a descendant of George and Lucy Thaggard (Ryland) that you have mentioned. My Auntie Nellie Thomas who you have mentioned is the younger sister of Polly (my grandmother) who was the eldest child of George and Lucy's children.

My mother visited from NZ a couple of years ago and went and visited Aunt Nellie who is apparently still alive in Blacktown somewherein Sydney I wish I could make time to go see her before she passes on. I think George and Lucy's children were Polly my grandmother, uncle John married Sarah, Auntie Lora married Sidney Smith, Auntie Nellie married a Thomas and another brother who I believe is still alive in Vatukaroa in Vanualevu in Fiji.

My mother was adopted by her Aunt Mary, daughter of Peter Thaggard from other side of the family that married Emily Gwilliam. Because of the supposed shame they never spoke about their families, so we never really knew much until we start probing them with questions as we got older.

Kirsten, I will not be back in London for 4/5 months. You could contact Alex Ryland direct, his wife's name is Orla, my daughter. He must be your second cousin. I think it would be worthwhile checking the ground I have covered 1770/1786 baptisms for St Johns, Hackney at the Hackney Archives. It is possible I missed a Baptism of a John Ryland. However, I did notice a Dryand baptism in 1777. I have not got the note I made on this. Michael, Alex's father has it. Dryand/Ryland easily a mix up. I also think it worthwhile to go back some further years as John may have been older being a second marriage. Alex's email is alex_ryland@hotmail.com and mine is hooperrichard@eircom.net.
The dates do not seem correct for Nester/John to be related to the Rylands. However, in a previous "life", I was a competitor to a Ryands firm in Manchester/Irlam which made steel wire products. The firm was bought out by Beakerts of Belgium before 1965. Hope this may be of some help.
Richard Hooper

I am looking for any information on Joseph and Priscilla Ryland who lived at Marlborough in King and Queen County, Virginia. Joseph was the son of Josiah who lived at Farmington also in King and Queen County. I have their children's names and most of the dates of death and birth for each but I am mainly looking for stories and pictures. I now own Marlborough and would like to find any pictures and stories of the family and house that are available.

Have been watching this with interest and while not sure I can help, I have interest in Rylands being my late mother's name. Her Rylands came to Liverpool from County Dublin late 19th century and produced many branches. I have got most of the Liverpool ones identified but know that many went to Manchester - made no impression with these. Folk law has it that a number went to London but here again no facts. If any of tnis makes sense please contact me. Best of luck with your searces.
Kevin Keeley - Lincolnshire

Hi!!

I really don't remember now although I know Richard was the most logical solution a the time and one of the closes Rylands to the area!! Its great that you have been to the archive as I was planning to go and look at the records very soon, but you have saved me the trip!!...and also that you have found that John was a Widower!! I thought he must have been older and possibly travelled to the area as the oldest Rylands are in the North of England. It would be great to find his first marriage as this would give us lots more clues!! If you would like me to I could meet you at he archive next time you go and double the effort for the time we have...heads down! I am really keen to find something that may tell us where John came from!

Lovely to hear from you!
Kirsten

A long time since I last communicated with you, Kisten. Last Saurday I visited the Hacney Archives abd saw the photo record of John's marriahe to Anna (not Hanna(H) according to my reading) Suaunders (Difficult to confirm entirely)om 2 January 1804. I had hoped to see a reference to his fathers name but it was not the practise to record this info. However I did note that he was a widower at this marriage.
I also examined the baptism for St John from 1770 to 1886. But time ran out and I noted no births of John Ryland (or any Ryland)in that period. Next time (A few months hence I will look to the earlier period a John's second marriage could be at a later age say 40-50. Could you you give me some details as to where you found the reference to Richard being John's father?
Michael Ryland has made some effort to contact your father but maybe I have spurred to better efforts.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your message. I started researching Louisa Anne Ryland when I found a folded up piece of paper about her amongst my mother's things after she died. I'm not sure whether you saw the message I posted, about how I'd been told as a little girl that we were somehow related to Ryland's Paints, (not sure how true that is by the way.) Anyway, I thought there might be some connection and we are distant relatives of hers. Can I e-mail you direct, so I can explain it all in a bit more detail. Pat.

I didn't know Walter Ryland had died, do you have a copy of that biography you could e-mail to me, my e-mail address is P.CLARKE46@sky.com.

Patricia,

You might want to read the short biography of Louisa Ann Ryland here on Rootsweb, written by Walter Ryland shortly before his unfortunate death. I am wondering if there is a connection since Louisa was the single greatest benefactor in the history of Birmingham, UK. Her legacy includes a school for artists and musicians housed in Cannon Park which was her former estate. Your ancestors may have met there. She was the daughter of Samuel Ryland and her dates coincide.

Jim Ryland

That's a real shame as I've been desperately trying to find out more about her. The story I heard was that she was disowned by the rest of the family when she married my Gt Grandfather as they felt she had married beneath her. Not sure how true that is? He was an artist and she was a pianist, or so I'm told. If you have any information re: this story, perhaps you could let me know.

Also, do you have your tree on Ancestry, as I'm wondering if we are related? Bye for now!
Hello, My Gt Grandmother, Mary Frances Ryland b.1856 was the grand-daughter of Archer Ryland b. 1792, legal author and barrister. I have just read, with interest, your article about the Ryland Group. When I was a little girl, and unfortunately, not taking a lot of interest, my mother and maternal grandmother always used to say we were, in some way connected with Ryland Paints that became Berger Magicote. Not sure how true this is, but thought I would let you know. It would be good to hear from you, as you may be able to "throw some light on this story".
Pat Clarke
