Heather,

Last night I found a Joseph Saddington and wife Sarah living in Oswego County, NY in the 1900 U.S. census. This leads me to believe that it was the Joseph with wife Sarah who were the parents of the Emma Saddington in my brother-in-law's family tree. I also found what may be them on two different voyages from England -- one in 1885 that brought Joseph by himself, and one in 1886 that brought Sarah and a number of children (but not Emma who was already married). I'll have to look up the names of those children again and will get back to you on that.

The information that I have on this family, such as it is, is mostly online already (except of course for information about living persons):

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mdtaffe...

I have additional information such as transcriptions of census listings, but won't post that information publicly. If you wish to receive it, you can contact me directly at mdtaffet@twcny.rr.com and I can send it to you via e-mail.

-- Mary D.
Derek
My grandmother was a Saddington, I have a lot of data re some of the families of Foxton & the City/Borough of Leicester.
I am not sure your Louisa Watson fits in with the marriage of Thomas Watson and Martha Saddington.
They were married 22 Jan 1846 at St. Andrews, Foxton, Leicestershire. They had 4 sons, William b1846, John b1849, James b1851 & Charles b1853, these children were all born Wigston, Leicestershire.Thomas 1811 - 1895 was born Scarrington Notts and died Wigston, Martha 1812 - 1898 was born Foxton and died in Leicester.
Louisa Cli{e}psham states on the 1881 census for West Derby, Lancashire that she was c1840 in Boston Lincolnshire.
She was born 6 years before Thomas & Martha were married.
The 1861 census for Market Place, Grantham Lincolnshire shows a 21 year old Louisa Watson born Foston, Lincolnshire living with her parents Thomas & Martha Watson.
Thomas Watson & Martha Selby were married Sep1838 in Grantham. Louisa Watson & John Joseph Clipsham were married Sep 1864 Grantham.
Foston is 5 miles north of Grantham on the A1.
The 1861 census for High Street, Grantham shows John Joseph Clipsham aged18 an Apprentice Draper to Hart BUCK born Grantham.Have u had sight of Louisa Watsons birth or marriage certificate, the birth would show her mothers maiden name.
I will email u copies of the 1861 details for u to see
I lived in Leicester until 2002, I now live in Lincolnshire so I go to the Lincoln Record Office from time to time
David

I didn't know that he had two wives!
Do you know where I can find a public family tree that includes this branch of the family?
Do you have any knowledge of CLIPSHAM's as this was my mothers maiden name?
I have a MARTHA SADDINGTON (1814-?) married to THOMAS WATSON (1811-1891) whose daughter LOUISA WATSON (1841-?) married JOHN JOSEPH CLIPSHAM (1842-?) from Grantham.
My email is: dbanksbkk@yahoo.com
Hi Derek

I am descended from the Thomas Saddington of Foxton that you mention, but by his second wife, Mary, through their son, Mattathias (d.1733) who married Frances Waters. However I have also registered the Saddington surname with the Guild of One Name Studies so am interested in any reference to the name Saddington. You can find my Saddington blog at www.saddington.blogspot.com and my Guild profile at www.one-name.org/profiles/saddington.html

I would be delighted to hear from you with regard to your Saddington ancestry.

All the best

Rowan Tanner
Saddington ONS
www.saddington.blogspot.com
saddington@one-name.org

Hi,

Last year I registered the Saddington surname with the Guild of One Name Studies, having done research into my Saddington family for 20 years, noting any references to Saddingtons that I came across on the way.

Last month, following a seminar on publishing your family history research, I have started a blog on the Saddington surname. You will find it at http://saddington.blogspot.com

It is a work in progress, so any comments, feedback, ideas of what to include etc would be gratefully received.

Regards,
Rowan Tanner
Saddington One Name Study

Joseph Saddington m. Mary Charlotte Pink 1824 London

Looking for information regarding Joseph Saddington who married Mary Charlotte Pink on 17 Apr 1824 at Saint Bartholomew The Great, London.

I have a copy of a letter dated 15th July 1831 written by Mary in Lisbon to her brother Thomas Pink of Woolwich Common, Kent, in which she requests a Saddington death certificate: “I was informed that he died of a decline, in his father’s house two years back”. I had assumed this to be her father-in-law but noticed that there was a burial of a Joseph Saddington aged 23 at Church Brampton, Northamptonshire in 1829, which would tally and could conceivably be her husband.

Mary and Joseph had two children although only George is named in the letter; Joseph was obviously in the Army although I’m not sure at this time as to his regiment or rank.

Any Information would be very much appreciated.

Michael J.
Hi David,
Thanks so much for that. I had already found Arabella Saddington born 1715 in Knossington and guessed that she married a John Chamberlain but my John Saddington Chamberlain wasn't born until 1778, so I assume he must be their grandson??? Any more info you may have will be greatly appreciated!
Just a quick query - I am trying to discover who ran the Fox and Hounds in Knossington in the late forties as my Father remembers visiting relatives at the pub as a child but can't remember who the relations were. (We think they were Chamberlains) Not sure where to turn for the info?
Thanks again,
Andrea

Hi David, thanks for the reply. My John Saddington was a carpenter. He Married Elizabeth Ruff in Oundle and the records state that he was of the parish. His children were Mark 1827, Harriet 1830, Charles 1832 (my GGGrandfather), Emma 1835, Mary Ann 1837, George 1839, Caroline 1842, Matilda 1847 and Helen 1850. All were born in Oundle. I know that by 1861 he, his wife and some of the children had moved to Battersea, London and he died in Ifield, Sussex in 1883 where he was estate carpenter. I am aware of the Kings Cliffe John Saddington but there also seems to be one born in Market Harborough around the same time as well as others and the census returns have suggested that these are not the right John Saddingtons as they still seem to be around the area later on unlike mine and the children don't match. I'm sure he must be there somewhere. Thanks for your help and ideas, I'll keep plugging away.

The IGI shows the following entry;
Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire.
07 Feb 1806
John CS of Joseph & Ann Saddington.
Now I know the area well, Kings Cliffe is very close to the village of Apethorpe, which I don't think has a church of it's own. Could this be the Thorp he gave in the census return. Did John have any children named Joseph, what was his trade.
Also at Kings Cliffe;
01 Aug 1802
Joseph Saddington = Ann Leach
Did any of the children have a name {middle name} of Leach.
I have a lot of data of the Saddingtons in Wakerly & Harringworth Northamptonshire only a few miles down the road, also Nth & South Luffenham & Market Overton Rutlandshire, if it helps.

CD = Christened Daughter
Yes I agree Ann (70) on the 1851 census is John S Chamberlain's widow.
My grandmother was a Saddington, I can trace her families to c1600 in Foxton, Leicestershire. I found the Saddington - Chamberlains at Aylestone when looking at the marriage of one of my (Mary) Saddington ancestors, she married an Illston.
I think your connection with Saddingtons begins with the following marriage.
Rothley, Leicestershire taken from the IGI
23 Apr 1734
John Chamberlain = Arabella Saddington
Knossington, Leicestershire taken from the IGI
08 Jan 1715
Arabella CD of John & Isaday Saddington
Great Dalby, Leicestershire taken from the IGI
John Saddington = Isaday Bell
Although a much later date I think this one of yours;
Cosby, Leicestershire taken from IGI
17 Jan 1853
John Saddington CS of John Saddington & Mary Ann Chamberlain
If you want to look at my Website I can give you the address, but has only my line.
If I find or think of anything I will let you know, I get to the Leicestershire Records Office from time to time, I live in Lincolnshire now, I could have a look at the Wills/Marriage Bonds.
TTFN David

Thanks David, the info is great!
What does the "CD" stand for next to Arabella , daughter of William and Eleanor?
John Saddington Chamberlain (b. 1778 Aylestone) was my Gr Grandfather x 4. Anne, William, Henry, Susan and Arabella were his children (all born Aylestone /Knighton)but I have been unable to find out who their mother was.I think your info - 1851 census shows their mother as being "Ann" and more besides I didn't know about! Thanks again so much. Are you related?

Hi, My 3X GGrandfather was John Saddington, a carpenter of Oundle, Northamptonshire. His birth varies with census returns between 1803 and 1811. He married Elizabeth Ruff in 1826. I am struggling to find how he relates to the other Saddingtons of Northamptonshire/Leicestershire as his birth place also differs from Oundle to Thorp and then just Northamptonshire. There seems to be several John Saddingtons in this area all born within about ten years of each other. Any suggsestions or help to tell which one if any he is or who his parents were would be gratefully received.

Thanks - I am amazed that something came up so quickly, I have only just started researching my family and I am surpised how well it is going.
I am afraid the Saddington name didn't carry on much further down my line as my great grandfather Frank, son of George had 5 daughters - Ella, Muriel, Joan, Barbara and Freda. My father Gordon was given Saddington as his middle name by my Grandmother Muriel.
I have found 9 of George Saddingtons children -George (who I believe died in1898 aged 35), Martha, Mary Ellen, John Thomas, Ann Sophia and Frank. In the 1871 census there was also Elizabeth and Sharlott, as Sharlott didn't show up in the 1891 census I presume she died as she would have only been 12 then.
Frank was born in1881and maried Annie Maude Walters in Birdwell, Barnsley at the Methodist New Connexion Chapel on the 1st of January 1907. He was living in Rotherham at the time. His Father George had died between October and December of the previous year in Leicester.
Do you know whether it wasThomas or John who was the Father of George? How did you manage to find out about them and their parents?
I would like to share as much as I can with you about our Saddington ancestors and to see how our 2 lines fit together, I am still looking into the life of Frank and I haven't even started looking at where all of my grandmothers sisters ended up.
My email address is silversun@fanasong.fslife.co.uk so you can use that if it it would be easier.
