Re: Irish Sadlers

I am a descendant of the Sadlers that lived near Hudson, OH. The first known Sadler was John who married Elizabeth McGlune(?)They arrived in the USA 1825 according to Grace Shaw Woldt. (Son William says arrived 1826) Lived near Pittsburg, PA with relatives (unknown) for about a year, where wife Elizabeth died. His gravestone in the Little Ireland Cemetery lists his death as 22 Sep 1849. In May of 1823 a John and Elizabeth Sadler arrived in New York on the "Manhattan," having left from Liverpool. (Most Irish immigrants went to Liverpool to take a ship to America.) They were not listed in steerage but as gentleman and lady on the manifest. Their country of origin is Ireland. Ages on the manifest are 51 (abt 1772) and 48 (abt 1775). No children were listed on the ship's manifest, but this seems to be the same Sadlers. They first lived in PA with relatives of wife Elizabeth. She died there about 1826. John and Elizabeth had 3 children: James Jared, b The Glen, now West Belfast, William McGlune and Elizabeth. After she died John and his two boys moved to Stow Twp, Summit Co., Ohio where he had relatives. It may be that he had an uncle or great uncle John there and cousins Martin, Arthur and Jane. Where he settled was near an area called Little Ireland in Hudson Twp. and later known as Metz. Sometime between 1830 and 1840 he moved to Hudson, Ohio, unless Stow became part of Hudson by 1840.
John married (2)1828 Portage co. OH, Dolly O'Brien. There children were Robert, Joseph, George, Margaret, Nancy, John M. and Albert b betw 1829 and 1848 (Have birthdates) Some of John's children were well known lawyers in this area of OH. I also have dates, marriages on most of these children. Helen O'Connor, hoconn@cox.net
Searching Sadler - Stapleton Relatives in England

Looking for any information pertaining to the families of John James Stapleton born about 1872 Swaffham, Norfolk, England and Mary Anna Sadler. John James was the son of James Stapleton and Mary Wailing who were married Nov 20 1868. They had 2 children Susannah (b Jul 2 1870 Swaffham Norfolk, England) and John James. John James married Mary Anna Sadler March 1903 , they had 3 children Arthur James (born Mar 30 1904), Barbara Ellen (born Mar 8 1905 Downham, Cambridgeshire, England) and Frederick Roy (born 1907 Wisbech, St Peter, Cambridgeshire, England). According to the 1911 census the three children were in an institution (I believe either a work house or an orphanage) but I can`t seem to find what happen to John and Mary Anna. From stories I have been told over the years, Arthur and Barbara went to live with their Aunt Susan, but I'm not sure what happened to Frederick. Arthur married Edith Patterson June 1930, Barbara married Sydney Charles Bennett July 20, 1927 in Thetford, Norfolk, England had 1 child Marjorie 1928 (Thetford) before moving to Ontario Canada May 18, 1930 where they had another child Gladys 1933 (Ontario). Barbara was keeping in touch with both brothers up until WW2 when she lost touch with Frederick Roy Stapleton, which then made her believe that he had died in the war somewhere either in India or Africa??? But to the contrary, as I have found records where he was married to a Kathleen Annie Crofts in March 1940 – Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England and had 1 child (b 1941) and after the war they had another child (b 1948).
Would greatly appreciate any information on Frederick Roy Stapleton and also any information on what actually happened to John and Mary Anna before and after 1911. Thanks gggrandaughter of James and Mary; ggrandaughter of John and Mary Anna, granddaughter of Barbara, daughter of Gladys.
Chad,
Just an interesting note on the McCulloch/Neel connection. My ancestor, William McCullock (not the same one that served with Thomas Neel) married Mary Armour in Rockbridge County, VA in 1816. Andrew and James Armour (brothers) were in Neel's militia. I believe they were Mary's uncles. You also mention an Allen family. Mary's first husband's surname was Allen.

Teri,
Thank you very much for replying! I have found 2 Sadlers listed in the Prince George CO., VA tax lists around my James' birth. Burwell and Jeremiah. Burwell married Mary Sturdivant and they moved to Davidson CO., VA abt. 1805 the time of James' birth. It seems logical that Burwell was maybe an Uncle to my James, but I have not found any information to prove from whom James descends. I have requested look ups in Joan Smola's book, but have been told James is not listed. James and Rebecca had 2 children, Elizabeth b. 1833 and John James b. 1836. Rebecca died and James remarried Caroline Clay. They had 6 children, Richard, Felix, Jesse, Henry, Edward, and Alice. If you ever come across any information to connect my James to any of the Sadlers in VA, please keep me in mind. Thank you very much!

Best Regards...............Cat

What I've always wondered if why someone not related would even want these old photos or, conversely, why someone actually IN that baby's family would be selling it on Ebay rather than seeing to it that some other member of the family got it. It's sad!

It is a shame if a relative does not snap it up. It makes one wonder how it got out of the family. Only $13 on buy it now.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-PHOTO-ATOKA-LOGAN-SADLER-DALHART...

Richard C. & Sarah E. SADLER

I'm looking for information on Richard C. Sadler (b. @ 1853, NC) and his wife, Sarah E. (b. @ 1856, NC). In the 1880 census, they lived in Pantego, Beaufort Co., NC and had a son named Emmet R. (b. @ 1877, NC). In the 1900 census, Richard & Sarah lived in Deep Creek, Norfolk Co., VA.

I've seen Emmett's first name spelled/misspelled several ways and don't know which is correct. He married Lettie A. L(?). In 1930, Emmett & Lettie lived in Tanners Creek, Norfolk Co., VA. They are buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.

I'd appreciate any info on them that anyone can share.

Elizabeth Sadler

My great grandmother's name was Elizabeth Sadler. She was born around 1906 in the Williamson County area of Tennessee, and my father was always told that she was 100% Cherokee. I have had a lot of trouble finding anything on her aside from a marriage record to my great grandfather Carl Jefferson Carter Sr. and one census record. If anyone happens to have any information that could help me in my search I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Sadler, McDonald, Neel, McCulloch

The Neels, McCullochs, Sadlers of the New Acquisition District (York Co, SC) and McDonalds (Forks of the Rivers McDonalds – Smith Co, TN)

Hello,
I need some help. You may have seen a couple of postings by myself on Ancestry.com about these families. I really hope you can help. I am working very hard on trying to accomplish a few things. The first aid I need is in showing how these families are related. I have so far (relying on many of your posting) stitched the lines together but need some help here in a couple of areas. I will cover that down below. The second area I need help in is confirming that our ancestors played the roles in the American Revolution that I suspect they did. Why is this important? Aside from my personal interest in History ( I am an licensed Architect here in SC and History and Architecture are so related as to be nearly inseparable…), I believe it is important to tell the history of our families to our children. For example, I have read that William McDonald and Elizabeth Sadler had 91 grandchildren. They in turn have many descendants from the early 1800’s. Imagine how many descendants that accounts for today. Lastly, I am trying to document these ancestors to determine who served so that any descendant that wishes can join the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution. I also believe that it will be a fantastic story once it can be told in full.

Now for some background on the New Acquisition District. The District was created in 1772 when a portion of Mecklenburg Co, NC was seceded to South Carolina as the border between the two colonies was being finalized. Many of those families that had thought they were in North Carolina now found themselves in South Carolina.

Now to outline what I think I know and where I need help. Any information supporting or to the contrary would be helpful as we work to our best understanding of the truth.

The Neels
While there is some disagreement on exactly how the Neels arrive in the New Acquisition, there is little disagreement that Col Thomas Neel II (I use the “II” to separate him from his son and father) was involved in negotiating the final boundary between the colonies North Carolina and South Carolina. In fact, his family went from living in Mecklenburg Co, NC to the New Acquisition District, SC. Col Thomas Neel’s role as the commander of the New Acquisition District Militia and the roles of his sons is well documented and I encourage you to research this family yourself. In short, Col Thomas Neel II, Andrew Neel, Thomas Neel, and John Neel all die fighting as members of the New Acquisition Militia. Col Thomas Neel II was also involved in the “Regulator” actions prior to the American Revolution.

The McCullochs
This part of the story focuses on William McCulloch. William McCulloch marries Elizabeth Neel, the sister of Col Thomas Neel II. Where I need help is digging a little deeper into this relationship. It is know that a Captain William McCulloch served under Col Thomas Neel II in the New Acquisition Militia. The issue I am trying to document is, “Are they the same person?” I suspect they are. As William and Elizabeth have four daughters and no sons, this line “daughters out” so to speak.

The Sadlers
This part of the story begins with William McDonald and Elizabeth Sadler from who are descended “The Forks of the Rivers McDonalds” from the Tennessee Counties of Smith, Jackson, Sumner, Putnam and Davidson that were mentioned above. They are married in Mecklenburg Co, NC in 1789 and move to Tennessee before the end of 1790. Elizabeth’s father is John Sadler is who marries Jennet McCulloch, one of the four daughters of William McCulloch and Elizabeth Neel. (You are probably beginning to see the outlines of the story now.) John Sadler and Jennet McCulloch are also married in Mecklenburg Co, NC. There also appears to be a Sadler connection to the New Acquisition District Militia. I have seen it suggested that Richard Sadler was John Sadler’s father and that while John lived in Mecklenburg Co, NC before moving to Tennessee with William and Elizabeth, his father Richard Sadler lived in the New Acquisition District just over the border in South Carolina. What is interesting here is that there is known to be a Capt Richard Sadler that served under Col Thomas Neel in the New Acquisition Militia starting 1775 and a John Sadler the enlisted in 1775. I believe these are the same men and that is where I need help.

The Forks of the Rivers McDonalds
This family has been heavily document after William McDonald and Elizabeth Sadler arrive in Tennessee. I the spirit of full recognition, there are other’s that are a part of this extended family such as an Apple and an Edelman that have been recognized by the DAR and SAR for service in the American Revolution. What I am hoping to accomplish among the other goals stated above is that if we can better document the Neel’s, McCulloch’s, and Sadler’s then we McDonald’s might be able to dig deeper in to our Past. I have only been able to document concretely back to this marriage in 1789 between William and Elizabeth. In addition, I am aware of the oral tradition support by the articles of Calvin Gregory. What I am hoping is that we can track down or eliminate a few leads that I would like to present.

Calvin Gregory’s articles are a little conflicting in that sometimes he puts forward that our William McDonald is directly descended from a Randolph McDonald and a brother to Magness, James and Elias. I other places, he suggests that William is the son of Magness. What is interesting her is that our DNA is closely related to that of a Hugh McDonald of South Carolina. We are only separated by a genetic distance of 2 markers in 25. Current theory suggests, as I understand it, that this would relate the two lines to sometime just before the American Revolution. Hugh McDonald’s line migrates down through Virginia, North Carolina and into South Carolina before turning west towards Georgia. This is very similar to the Forks of the River McDonald oral tradition. Also, there is evidence of a Magness McDonald from North Carolina, that married and Agnes McDonald and that fought at Kings Mountain. (not to be confused with the Magnus McDonald the married a Tabitha)

I hope this has not been too long winded and is clear. I just wanted to be thorough to get the best help.

Sincerely,
Chad McDonald
