William Sale-the immigrant. Location of his original 73 1/2 acres.

I have been doing research on the location of William Sale's deed of 73 1/2 acres, along with several other deeds related to the Sale, Jones, Farmer, Parker, Brooke and Mayfield families. I now believe that I have found the location of the land that Thomas Parker, essentially gave William Sale in 1681 in old Rappahannock County, Virginia; now Essex County.

First, let me state that the original deed of 73 1/2 acres was wrong. It in fact was for 60 acres. I have recalculated this acreage several times. There is indeed about a 13 1/2 acre mistake in this deed. The property forms a polygon and the irregular shape makes is diffucult to calculate the area. The property had to be divided into right triangles to determine acreage, and the surveyor who calculated the acreage failed to divide by two after multipling the length and width of one of these triangles.

Oddly enough, William Sale's land encompassed the area around where old St. Matthews church is located at Champlain, Virginia. In my opinion it should have been called, Sale or Sale's Church, Virginia, but that's just my opinion. This fork in the road had been known as the, "fork at..." or "road to..." Sale's Church from 1731 until at least the 1860's. It only became known as Champlain, Virginia when a post office was established there in 1893. Anyway, here is how I found the solution to the location of this deed.

In 1673, Thomas Parker was granted 73 1/2 acres, (actually 60 acres) of land as follows:

"To all to whom these present shall come, I Sr Wm Berkley, Knt. Governor & c. Now know yee & c. that I the sd: Sr Wm Berkley doe with the consent of Counsell of State accordingly give & grant unto Tho: Parker seaventy three Acres of Land and a 1/2 situate and being in the County of Rappa: on South side the River in the pish of Sittingbourne back in the woods. Beginning at a marked red Oake the Corner tree of Robert Gaines Land extendeth thence by the same N.W. 90 pole to a red oak by ye side of a branch thence N.N.E. 40 po: to the Land of Wm. Moseley. Thence by the sd Moseleys line E: by S. 192 po: to a red oak neare to a path in the head of vally Thence S.W. 122 po: and finally W by S 40 pole to the first mentioned Station the sd Land being doe unto the sd Parker by and for the Transportation of two persons into this Colony whose names are in the records mentioned underneath this patent. To have and to hold yeilding and paying to or sd Soveraigne Lord the King & c. Given under my hand and Seale of the Collony this 5th of Novr: 1673..."

The "branch side" the deed refers to turns out to be called today, Hunters Mill creek. The deed was recorded on the same day as his gift to William Sale, the 23rd day of January, 1681/82

In 1677, Robert Mayfield bought 105 acres of land from Daniel and Robert Gaines (Games) which states:

"BEE IT KNOWN unto all men by these presents that wee Daniel Gaines & Robert Gaines of ye County of Rappae: in consideration of two thousand pounds of tobacco & Cask to us in hand paid, doe sell unto Robert Mayfield of ye same County his heires & assignes forever a Certaine Devident of land containing about One hundred & five acres by estimation being on ye South side of Rappae: River in ye County abovesd in ye Parish of Sittingbourne back on ye Woods on ye South most side Branch of Occupacie creek beginning at a marked red Oak corner tree of Thomas Parker's land & running N.W. along ye land of ye sd Parker to Pokikery (Hickery) on a branch side from thence by a South course to a marked tree on ye land of Robert Moss thence along ye sd land of Robt. Moss to another corner tree, thence still along ye sd Moss his land towards ye S:E: a corner tree, thence by a North East Course along ye land of William Bates to ye place where it first began wee ye abovesd Danial Gaines & Robt. Gaines make over all our right to ye sd land wth all houses, orchards, fences & cleare ground thereupon, from us or: heires & administration unto ye abovesd Robert Mayfield his heires & assignes forever & wee doe warrant ye same unto him & them from ye just Clayme of all or any persons whatsoever. In Testimony herunto sett to or: hands & seales this 5th day &ber in ye year of or: Lord 1677."

Again, the N.E. boundry corner by a "branch side" with Thomas Parker's land is Hunters Mill creek.

In 1681, Thomas Parker gives his 73 1/2, nigh 60 acres, to William Sale, "...for valuable consideration already received." Parker reserves ingress and egress for a cemetery plot where his daughter is buried.

Later, in 1727, Abraham Mayfield, son of Robert Mayfield sells 125 acres of land, (this acreage may be a mistake, or there may be additional land included) to Robert Brooke, Jr., bounded by Cornelius Sale, Thomas Jones and Col. Joseph Smith. Smith's land was on the South of Mayfield's land. Thomas Jones land was located on the north and west sides, meaning Cornelius Sale's land was on the east side of Mayfield's property. Cornelius having inheirited this land from his father, William Sale. Then, in 1731, Robert Brooke, Jr., sells the Mayfield land to Cornelius Sale reserving two acres for the church which would be known either as, "Saile's Church," or "Sale's Church".

This pretty well establishes that Wiliam Sale's land was located next to Robert Mayfield's land and that Cornelius Sale eventually owned both properties. Now, as to how I came about finding the location of these properties; it gets more complicated.

Some years ago I was made aware of a plat map of Farmers Hall that has long been claimed to be the land of the Sale family. It was actually, and some would argue more famously, at one time, the land of Robert Brooke, Jr., surveyor and a member of the "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe." However, Thomas Sale, who married Molly Brooke, daughter of Robert, did inherit 247 acres of the land after Robert Brooke, Jr's., death.

This plat map dates to 1817. A gentleman named Henry Garnett, bought Farmers Hall in 1791. Garnett died in 1811. His probate case is dated and listed as, "1823-030, James H. Noel vs Henry Garnett's exec. & Robert Garnett." There is also another reference to the plat map in the Fredericksburg Court records listed as, "Noel & c vs Matthews, exor of Henry Garnett, 1820/CR-SC-H/205-2." It is this record that identifies the plat map as being drawn in 1817.

Farmers Hall, as it was called when Henry Garnett died, was not the dwelling house that Robert Brooke, Jr., lived in during his lifetime. Farmers Hall, as the 1817 plat map shows, was located on the west side of the property, where Robert Brooke, Jr's, house was on the east side. There is also no evidence that Robert Brooke, Jr., ever called his plantation Farmers Hall. This was a name given to the property by either Robert Brooke III, or his son, Edmund Brooke. The oldest known reference to the name Farmers Hall dates to 1782 in a letter written by Edmund Brooke to Col. William Davies.

Robert Brooke's "dwelling plantation" or "dwelling house," as it was most often referred to, was located at the fork of what today is called Farmers Hall creek and Chesituxent swamp. Farmers Hall creek has been referred to by many names, Mosses branch, Little Occupacia creek and the S.W. branch of Occupacia creek. Chesituxent swamp was in fact, historically, the main S.W. branch of Occupacia creek, part of which today is called Farmers Hall creek. Today, the remaining portion of Chesituxent swamp is unnamed on topographic maps. Chesituxent is an Algonquian name whose meaning has been lost to history.

Two deeds refer to the fork of what was then Mosses branch and Chesituxent creek as being where Robert Brooke, Jr's, dwelling house stood. The first, from June 11, 1717, between William Moss and Robert Jones. The second, from March 16th, 1723, between Richard Moss and Robert Jones. Oddly enough, both of these deeds involve the same property. These two deeds establish that this is where Robert Brooke was living between 1717 and most likely, 1744, when he died. Now, put that together with the plat map from 1817, which also shows a graveyard next to the "Old House," as it is described on the map and this must be the location of Robert Brooke, Jr's, house, and likely, the graveyard where he is buried. This fork at Mosses Branch and Chesituxent creek then establishes our starting point to locate the land of William and Cornelius Sale.

The deed dated June 11, 1717, from William Moss to Robert Jones states in part:

"William Moss of St. Ann's Parish, Essex County, Robert Jones of same. For 30 pounds sterling...386 acres... plantation and land were Martha Moss, widow, now dwells...forke of a swamp near Mr. Robert Brooke's dwelling house where he now dwells, known by the name of Mosses Swamp...til it comes to Chestnut Swamp...land of William Jones, unto land sold by William Mosses father unto Thomas Farmer...land formerly given by Robert Moss, father of said William unto Tucker and now in the possession of Cornelius Sale of this county of Essex...unto the land of Joshua Stapp formerly purchased by his father (Abraham Stapp) of Edward Moseley..."

This establishes that Chestnut swamp is the first branch south of Chesituxent swamp. Today, Chestnut swamp is called Rouzie swamp on topo maps and at the branch of Mosses swamp and Chestnut swamp is where William Jones' land began. Also, the deed from May 13th, 1729, between Robert Stokes and Salvator Muscoe establishes that the bridge over Mosses branch and the main road was called, William Jones bridge. It also establishes that the location of the S.W. corner of William Jones land and the modern day bridge on Highway 17 (Tidewater Trail) over Farmers Hall creek, is adjacent to where William Jones bridge was originally located. The original road and bridge having been slightly northeast of the current bridge.

William Jones, in 1704, is charged with 465 acres of land and in 1715, with 415 for a net loss of 50 acres sold during this time period. If we look at the Essex County assessors map, section 19, tax parcels 65, 65a and the combined smaller portion of parcel 42 it adds up to 115 acres. Then, if we look at tax parcels 64 and 66, they add up to 250 acres. The other 50 acres from the 1715 quit rent rolls is as yet unaccounted for...

Next to William Jones' land is the fifty acres of land that Thomas Farmer bought from Robert Moss and Mary, his wife, on June 9th, 1704. This land Farmer sold to George Loyd on June 9th 1710. George Loyd died prior to Dec. 19, 1713, when his will was dated. Loyd left the land to, "daughter-in-law," Mary Diskin (actually his step daughter.) Mary, married Francis Padget, who then sold the land to Cornelius Sale on June 17, 1718.

The deed from Robert Moss to Thomas Farmer reads in part:

"Robert Moss and Mary his wife of Sittenbourne parish sell Thos Farmer of Essex, for 2000 lb tobo, 50 acres on Occupation Creek in Sittenbourne par. Beginning at a corner tree of Nicholas Willard & Robert Moss, thence down the main Swamp to ye land of William Jones, thence along the land of the said Jones to a branch called Jones Spring branch, thence along ye Said branch to a marked Hiccory thence along the(words missing)to a marked Hiccory Standing on the head of a branch yt comes out of a branch called by the name of ye Chestnut branch, thence along to a marked red oak that stands in the said Willard's & Mosses line thence along the sd Line to the first mentioned Station..."

This is further shown by the deed between Richard Moss of Westmoreland County and Robert Jones. Richard Moss was evidently the son of Robert Moss and brother of William Moss. Apparently, Richard Moss had made a claim on the 386, nigh 400 acres, that William Moss sold to Robert Jones in 1717. So on March 18, 1723, Richard Moss sold his interest in the same property to Robert Jones.

This deed states:

"This INDENTURE made the Sixteenth day of March 1723 Between Richard Moss of the County of Westmoreland in (the) Colony of Virginia of one part & Robert Jones of the County of Essex in the County aforesd. Witnesseth that said Richard Moss for (the) sum of Fifteen hundred pounds of Tobacco to him paid hath granted unto said Robert Jones his heirs all that plantation & tract of land whereon Andrew Pritchet now lives in (the) parish of St. Anne in aforesd County of Essex & containing four hundred acres bounded Beginning at ye fork of a Swamp comeing out of Little Occupacia Creek oposet to Capt. Robert Brooks Dwelling house where he now lives. Thence up the South branch thereof to the land of William Jones. Thence along the several courses of said William Jones his land until it comes to the land of Cornelius Sale which he purchased of Francis Paget. Thence along several courses of the sd Sale's land to the land of Robert Brooke wch: was lately Abraham Stepps. Thence along the several courses of said land to a Swamp and so down the sd Swamp to the beginning..."

Note that by comparing the two deeds of William Moss and Richard Moss it establishes that Thomas Farmer's land became Francis Padget's land and that Padget sold the land to Cornelius Sale.

Farmer's land was divided from William Jones' land by William Jones spring branch. Today, this branch still exists, but has meandered through the centuries as topo maps from the early 1900's show when compared to the modern tax assessors maps. These assessors maps also do not show the next branch along Chestnut swamp which forms, in part, the N.W. side of Thomas Farmer's property, however; it does appear on old topo maps from the early 1900's. This branch may have filled in naturally over the years or been filled in by modern development. This N.W. boundry of Thomas Farmer's land splits the original tax parcel 42 in half, which was at one time, in part, an 80 acre parcel owned by another Sale family member, William Eugene Sale, son of Benjamin Leonard Sale and Mary Susan Wright, until 1912. This N.W. boundry of Farmer's land forms the S.E. boundry to the land that Leomidon Tucker, father of Daniel Tucker, who bought or was given this land by Robert and Rebecca Moss on September 3rd, 1679. As a side note, you can see from the previous deed from Robert Moss to Thomas Farmer that Robert Moss had two wives; Rebecca and Mary.

The description of the deed between Robert Moss and Leomidon Tucker is as follows:

"KNOW ALL MEN by these present that I Robert Moss of the County of Rappae: Planter, together with the consent of Rebecca my beloved Wife, for diverse good causes me thereunto mooving, as alsoe for the love and affection wee beare unto Leomidon Tucker of the abovesaid County, doe for us freely give and make over unto the said Leomidon Tucker his heires and assignes forever One hundred acres of land being in the Parish of Sittingbourne (later St. Anne's) in the County aforesaid on the South side of the Rappae: River back in the woods on the SW branch of Occupacy Creek beginning at a marked red Oak on the corner tree of the land of Robt. Gaines, and runing thence along the line of the land of Thomas Parker for length, a certaine proportional quantity of perches (poles) according to the dimension of the land above specified thence the next Course into the land above specified, thence the next Course into the land of Robert Moss according to proportion parallell with the first course back againe; to the line of the land of William Bates and finally along the said line to the first mentioned station, we the Robert and Rebecca Moss..."

You can see from the deed between Robert Moss and Leomidon Tucker that the N.W. boundry line of Tucker's land was the S.E. boundry of Thomas Parker's land. The same land that Thomas Parker gave to William Sale in 1681.

The clue that this was William Sale's land was the triangular parcel of land that makes up tax parcels 33, 33a, 33b and 33c. These were at one time one parcel that was owned by a Lillian May Sale, daughter of Benjamin Leonard Sale and Mary Susan Wright, until 1924, when it was sold out of the family. It should be noted, however; that this land had previously been sold out of the family by Thomas Sale, son of Cornelius, and Thomas' wife, Molly Brooke-Sale, in 1788, but had been reaquired, through an inheritance, by brothers, Dandridge Sale and Leonard Pitts Sale in the 1850's after the death of their uncle, Blevin Pitts, who owned Farmers Hall at that time, and which included the land where St. Matthews Church is located. The land was then inherited, in part, by Dandridge Sale's son, Benjamin Leonard Sale and his children. It should also be noted that when Thomas Sale sold this land to Capt. Muscoe Livingston the boundries were somewhat different from those that were given in the original grant given to Thomas Parker and included some additional land.

This land included the N.E. corner of the St. Matthew's church property. The eastern point of this property formed the eastern point or corner of William Sale's land where his land turns S.W. for 122 poles and then W by S for 40 poles to the corner of Robert Gaines, which was later William Sale's corner with Robert Mayfield.

It is also important to note here that in 1788, Thomas Sale and wife, Molly Brooke-Sale, sold the land that his father, Cornelius, had bought from Tucker and Padget, to Meriday Brown.

So, for those of you who live in the Tidewater Virginia area, as you travel up and down Highway 17, the Tidewater Trail, passing by old St. Matthew's Church; be mindful that you are passing over the land where the Sale family began in this country, and probably, where many of our Sale ancestors lie buried.

I am searching for the family of Thomas Sale (b. abt 1822)who lived in London in the 1840's. His common-law wife was Ann (sometimes k/a Polly) Jones. Ann had 2 daughters, Sarah (father recorded as Thomas Sale) and Mary Ann (not sure of father). Thomas was involved with petty crime but got caught up when he and others robbed a man, in Westminster, who subsequently died from injuries. Thomas was found guilty to CCC 13/12/1847, death sentence and was hanged 10/1/1848. Ann was also found guilty of a separate robbery offence and received 15 yr Transportation sentence to Australia , 1848. Ann and her 2 daughters survived and lived in Tasmania.
I am a descendant of Ann. Would like to know if anyone knows the parents or siblings of Thomas Sale.

Cal (or someone else),

I believe Granville S. Sale's brother was Lewis A. Sale. Do you know who the wife of Lewis was? The Confederate pension application says "Virginia R. Sale". I went through the census data and the only "Virginia R" I could find that would have been the right age was Virginia Ryan. I could not find a marriage to Lewis in Amherst County. Also, I think that at least one of Granville's desertions was related to his brother's (Lewis) illness. Lewis became ill around Staunton in the fall of 1863 and returned home where he died. One of Granville's desertation was at this time.

I am a descendent of Lewis and Virginia's daughter, Laura, who married James Higginbotham.

Thanks,

Mike Thomas

I don't have any info on the Dodd family either. I have Lutie (Lucy) Dodd with a brother Willie W. Dodd, and their father as Edward P. Dodd born 1848 in virginia. There is quite a bit on the familysearch.com site if you type in edward P. dodd and find the kids if you know who they are. It gives the parents name. I think Edward P. dodd was married a couple times. And I think Lutie, was Lucy Dodd. I have Edward P. Dodd as married to a Sarah ? . I havent checked that all out at all. I do have the Morgan side. I wondered what you had on the Morgans, or any photos or information? Tipton's brother, Albert Morgan was a lion tamer in Snakeville TX. I wondered if you had any data on that? That's all I have.. Except for Lucy's brother is Willie. This is the info from the 1930 Federal Census. Maybe give you something to start with.
1930 Federal Census

Name: Edward P Dodd
Event: CENSUS
Event Date: 1930
Event Place: Pedlar, Amherst, Virginia
Gender: Male
Age: 82
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Birthplace: Virginia
Estimated Birth Year: 1848
Immigration Year:
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Father's Birthplace: Virginia
Mother's Birthplace: Virginia
Enumeration District Number: 0011
Family Number: 99
Sheet Number and Letter: 6A
Line Number: 23
NARA Publication: T626, roll 2434
Film Number: 2342168
Digital Folder Number: 4547832
Image Number: 01077
Household	Gender	Age
Edward P Dodd M 82
Child Willie W Dodd M 41
Gladys Dodd F 29
James E Sale M 25
Perry G Sale M 11

I am trying desperately to trace Tipton G Sale's wife, Lutie Dodd, but keep running into the same mistakes as found in the census and other documents (spelling slight errors)Since this thread was originally started has anyone perchance run across any more of the Dodd line?
Oh, and hello to any and all my cousins out there I may not have met!

Again, the information in Slaughter's book is wrong. The land was set aside for the church in in a deed between Robert Brooke and Cornelius Sale in 1731 and the church was built by August 1733. Slaughter was just restating bad information by previous researchers. There is also no evidence that the church was torn down in the late eighteenth century. There is ample evidence the the church survived right up until sometime between 1843 and 1855 when it is no longer listed in the processioners returns. The 1855 processioners return has no mention of Sale's Church in it. Previous returns had mentioned the church in relation to other property owners in the area.

In a previous post I had stated that I thought that Sale's Church had stood until the new church was built, however; later research revealed that the church had indeed been torn down between 1843 and 1855. The 1855 processioners return has no mention of Sale's Church in it. Previous returns had mentioned the church in relation to other property owners in the area.

Source Number 2:

Essex Cunty Wills #6, 1733-1735, pp. 10-11. 29 August 1733, will of William Taylor. "Thomas Heely to see me buried at ye New Church and pale me in."

The "New Church" could only be Sale's Church. Cornelius Sale, Thomas Heely and John Goode had been appraisers of the estate of William Evans on March 16th. Also, John Cook was witness to this will. This is the same John Cook who married Cornelius Sale's daughter, Mary, both of whom would die of disease a few months later.

The subsribers list from 1860 which states they intend to build the new church on the site of Sale's Church. In fact, Blevin Pitts, who was the brother of Mildred Pitts, who married Leonard Sale, donated one acre of land for the new church. Leonard Pitts Sale and his brother, Dandridge Sale, were the executors of Pitt's estate.

Going further back to 1817. The plat of the Farmers Hall estate, which was owned by Henry Garnett at that time states that one of the points in the survey that a certain corner was on the south side of the road that goes to Sales Church. That road no longer exists, but stretched from the Farmers Hall property down the the fork in the road that still exists at Champlain that has been discribed as the "Fork at Sales Church" in other documents. This fork lies just south of St. Matthews Church.

I may be able to help you with your land maps. I have located most of William and Cornelius Sale's land. As far as the Mayfield land, I know where most of the boundries are, however; there is a discrepency in the total number of acres. The originial deed was for 105 acres, but when his son Abraham Mayfield sold the land it was for 125 acres. I cannot find where the additional twenty acres came from...I believe they came from part of William Sale's land which Cornelius inherited to the east of Mayfield's land.

I have run into James Merritt's land being mentioned with in the sale of Col Joseph Smith's land which was sold by John Smith. His land was by Christopher Beverley's land. Part of Smith's land was bought by John Sale. It is the land that Linden B&B is currently located. The information about the history of Linden on their website in totally wrong.

Anyway, contact me if you want compare notes.
I may not have found the correct Thomas. The Thomas Sale I am tring to find married Harriett Campbell Feb 1819 in Caroline County. She is the daughter of Joseph Campbell and Rosey (Sale?). They had one son (Thomas) that I know of. After his death, Harriett married Thomas Broaddus in 1827.
I had been working with the idea that he was orphaned and moved out of the county - which is why I was looking at John Sale & Phebe children.

Any of this sound familiar? Thanks.

Here is the information on my ggaunt Phebe or Pheba as she it was sometimes written in records.

Married Richard Mays on November 20, 1820 in Amherst County, Virginia.

Richard Mays born based on census records in 1777 in Amherst County, Virginia. Believed to be the son of Robert Mays. I have no information on his mother. He died between 1850-60.

Phebe Sale born 1794 in Caroline County, Virginia. Died at Temperance, Amherst County, Virginia on August 13 1873 reported by C. E. Beard.

Both are believed to be buried in the Richard Mays Cemetery near Molly Mountain in Amherst County, Virginia.

Children:

Richard S. Mays born about 1826, married Delilah Campbell.

Phebe Mays, born about 1830, married John P. Campbell.

Pamillia L. Mays, born about 1829, married Charles E. Beard.

Mary Avarilla Mays, born about 1833, married William J. Cash.

Two other children that I have not yet verified are William J. Mays, married Polly Campbell and Elizabeth Mays, married David S. Campbell.

Obviously, they were close to the Campbell family, but I have no other infomation on the Campbell's. They may be related to Wiley Campbell who married Elizabeth M. Sale, daughter of John Sale and Frances Saunders.

Additional information. Phebe was raised as an orphan by here aunt Polly Sale who married Jesse Jones. She moved with her brothers and sisters to Amherst County in 1808 from Caroline County to live with family members after the death of her father, John Sale and mother, Phebe Mitchell. The children appear in court papers in Amherst County. There guardian was Henry Lane, Jr. who married Phebe's aunt Elizabeth Sale-Barker. Henry and Elizabeth are buried in Rockbridge County at Falling Spring Cemetery.

Phebe's brothers and siters were, Andrew, Alice, John, William (my gggrandfather), Mary Ann and Thomas P. Sale.

If you have additional information I would like to exchange information.
Yes, she married Richard Mays in 1820. I dont have the exact date. She is believed to be buried in the Richard Mays family cemetery near Molly Mountain in Amherst County. She died in the 1850's or 60's. I have the date, but not with me right now. I'll post it later. They had several children some of whom lived in Nelson County. I'll post more specific information tomorrow.

Just read your query, 23 Jul 2010. All dates and names are very close to my great-grandparents. According to his obit, aquired at the library in Neodesha, KS., he was born Dec. 20 , 1843, in Wilkesboro, N. C. Served in the confederate army. Moved to Garnett, KS where he met and married Ellen Osborn on Nov. 18 1870. On Dec. 18, 1889, she died. They lived in Montogmery Co, Ks. A few months before he died, he went to live with a son. He died Jan 20 1917 at the home of his son, rural Neodesha, Wilson, Co. KS. Somewhere I have pictures of the gravestones. I can't remember if I ever checked the dates or not. His name is Charles W on the tombstone, I think, but is W. Charles on his Civil War enlistment record.

Cal, that makes a lot of sense to me. I could never figure this thing out, I dont have an 1870 census and the 1880 census that I have doesnt show Granville T. Sale. However I have one further question that will help me clear some of this stuff up. Do you know what Frances"s maiden name was. I noticed that it is Frances J., so just wondering if you have that information. Also would you know when Benjamin died. I know that Frances remarried to Samuel Evans. After Frances died Samuel sold his property after marrying Sarah Booker and supposedly moved to West Virginia. Also they were all living just north of Fincastle Va. near to John J. Sales who was 52 in 1880 and his wife Lucinda Sales.
Any further information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks you have made my day. louisshowalter@aol.com.
PS. Glad to have you as a cousin

Based on available information. Benjamin Sale, son of James and Alice Sale was the father of Diana R. Sale. If you look at the available census data there is a mistake in the age of Diana's brother, Granville's age in the 1850 census. Based on the 1870 census, he was 8 years old, not 18. So in 1850 Benjamin Sale was 36, Frances J. Sale was 24, Granville was 8 and Diana was 5. Diana is shown living with Granville in 1870 in Amherst County, Pedlar Township, P.O. is Cool Well. Benjamin, his mother Alice and sister Peggy are also living in the same area. Guess that makes us cousins.

Cal, wow do I appreciate the info about Alice Sale and James Sale. I have been to Amherst County several times and cannot seem to find much information. In the 1850 Census it list Allice Sales, Benjamin (I thought it was Beryn) as 36. Francis Sale as 24, Granville Sale as 18, and Dianna Sale as 5. Dianna married my Great Grandfather and on the marriage certificate in Botetourt County it shows her mother as Francis Sale. Who was Francis married to, or was Dianna born out of wedlock. I am having a difficult time finding this information. Dianna and her Husband John Black are both buried in Clifton Forge, Va. Francis I think is buried in the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Fincastle, Va. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Louis (louisshowalter@aol.com

The name in not Beryn but Benjm, Benjamin, son of Alice Sale and James Sale. Yes there are two Granville Sales. One Granville T Sale and one Granville S Sale. Both approximately the same age.

Alice Sale was the son of John Sale and Phebe Mitchell. James Sale was her first cousin. James died of disease in the War of 1812 in either December or February 1814/1815. There is confusion in the official records.

John Sale died in 1808 in Caroline County and Phebe was dead by 1807 when her father, John Mitchell, also died in Caroline County. John and Phebe's children went to live with relatives in Amherst County. James and Alice were married in Amherst County in 1808.

The other Granville was the son of Benjamin Sale and Mary Lane.

Granville S Sale (verify) is buried in Amherst County on Ware Gap Road. His gravestone in the only one still standing just 30 feet off the roadway.

These families are all related to me because Alice's brother, William, was my gggrandfather.

I will have to pull my records if you want more information.

Cal Sale
