My grandfather was a Salmons but his side of the family had become Sammons whether through choice or mispelling I am not sure. Hope this is of some assistance.

Re: family
During the 1950s & 60s, Alex Salmons had a store at Stepptown, WV @ 4 mile from Kermit. He had a son who, I believe, attended Kermit High instead of Crum High. He still had that store when I was at Crum, and I believe it was later operated by Harry Moore.

Contact Pat or Dale Fluty there in the Crum or Stepptown area (Pat is Director of Transportation for Wayne County Schools). I believe this Alex is part of Pat's line.

The other Alex (Ringtail) Everett Salmons is son of Roland (Ringtail) & Nancy (Bates) Salmons. Roland was the oldest son of Franklin Pierce & Sarah Margaret (Chaffin) Salmons who had a farm on the "Pierce Hollow" at Yellow Ck, Ky across the Tug River 1 mile from Webb, WV. Sarah was a daughter of Stan Chaffin and xxxx Copley as best I recall.

Alex Ringtail married Nancy Slade, daughter of Joe Slade of Queens Ridge, Dunlow, WV. Nancy died of T B about 1937 or so. Alex died perhaps 30 yrs or so ago of a heart attack at Chesapeake, OH. His only living son,Drexel Salmons, lives in the Spring Valley Area near Kenova, Wayne County, WV.

Roland's sister, ANNIE (Salmons) BRADLEY who married Joe Bradley has a G-Granddaughter, GARNETT ALLEY, residing at Cattlettsburg (? sp), KY near Kenova, WV. She was raised by Aunt Annie at Logan and at Dragg Ck near Roland's farm.

My Dad, Joe Sammons, is a son of Stan & Jessie (Waller) Salmons of Webb, WV. Stan was Pierce & Sarah Margaret's baby and was named for Sarah's dad, Stan Chaffin. I was raised at Webb in the 50's & 60's and knew all of the kids living at the time - - Tim, Bazz (Zella), and J.W. had passed by then, leaving Roland, Nancy Jane, Annie, Liz (moved to Carlsbad, NM), Stan.

All the cousins (except most of Fred & Bazz' kids) dropped in at Stan & Jessie's little country store there at Webb from time to time. Some of Bazz' kids did too -- Earl I remember very well. Nancy Jane & Joe Vinson's kids were regulars and my brother, Charles, visited them regularly at Nolan, WV when he worked on the railroad thru there.

Many, many of them buried at Webb Church including my dad, Stan, Jessie, their kids Chester, Myrtle, & Virginia (Opal is buried near Somerset, OH); Roland & Nancy; Frank (Ringtail); Annie; Nancy Jane & Joe Vinson; and I've forgotten so many that a trip thru the cemetery would refresh.

The orignal Salmons Cemetery in the area is about 2 mile away on the KY side of the Tug where old man Roland Jr and his first wife, Edna Elam Osborne and his second wife, Nancy Cox, had their farm. That is also where G-Grandpa Franklin Pierce is buried adjacent to Concord Church (unmarked grave). Sarah Margaret died in 1920 but I don't know where she is buried.

J.W. is buried at Foley in Logan Co, and I suspect Uncle Joe Bradley is too. Don't know about Bazz & Fred. Uncle George Williamson (Aunt Liz's husband) is buried at Red Jacket #3 and I believe Aunt Liz was buried in Carlsbad. Uncle Tim (Pierce & Sarah's son, not Tim Ringtail) died in a railroad accident back probably before his mom, but I don't know where he was buried.

Don Sammons (runwayinsight @ msn . com) or 304 733-6997.

Della, if you're still watching this board, how has this turned out for you? I saw where a gentleman had said that he was related, but wanted to compare notes. I had his father as Roland and mother Isabell Parsley. Does this sound right to you? I have no marriage or descendants for Covington, but the birth I have for him is 10 Nov. 1889, and death in 1972. Any details appreciated. I'm not a descendant, but a nosy cousin who wants to know as much as he can about everybody in the family tree. Much appreciated.
David Chafin
dchafin@wvdisciples.org

I am also researching the Salmons/Sammons families. I note more than one as the primary is Elizabeth Salmons that married William Henry 1802 Botetourt Co. VA. Jacob Salmon was Surety. The second Salmons also spelled Sammons was of Sussex Co. VA. This other Elizabeth Sammons married John Whitehorn Jr. Elizabeth the daughter of James Sammons and Annie Seaborne.

I have seen Amagon, Jonesboro and Heber Springs AR listed on this site. The descendants of the Salmons and Sammons above moved to Glaize Township, Jackson Co. AR. in the 1853 - 1856 timeframes. I would love to hear from you and compare our research either online or directly to me at the following e-mail: cca44@aol.com.

Carolyn Anderson
Hope you're still there.
I also am a remnant of Daniel Boone's legion of family members. But, reading your post rang another bell.
I had a great-uncle named Hilliard B Crump. Uncle B was born in Callaway Co, MO in 1871. He married a Phamey Nestor Salmons, a widow with 4 children. I am the last living person in this line so there is no one left to ask questions of. Makes it difficult to locate people.
Does my Salmons lady sound at all familiar to you?
If you can help, I'd really appreciate it.
June Gray chachipup@yahoo.com

Sheila - I haven't done enough work on the family to know at this point. I have had Leah Salmons and Jesse Walls names for years and have not done much on them. I got an inquiry last week that prompted me to do some searching for Leah's family. In going to the censuses in the early 1800's, I discovered that the majority of Salmons / Sammons / "Solomons" in Sussex Co, DE were listed as free people of color. This got my interest.

What I have done is some extensive reading this past weekend on the family in general. The Sammons/Salmons are a part of what was once referred to as the "Delaware Moors." These families are a group that kept mainly to themselves and are thought to be descendants of the Nanticoke tribe - mixed possibly with Europeans and Africans.

Ancestry sites this book - "Free African Americans of Maryland and Delaware from the Colonial Period.." which says that "Jane Salman/Salmond, born say 1683, was the indentured servant of Francis Makemie on 3 December 1701 when she was presented by the Accomack County, Virginia Court for having an illegitimate "Mulatto" child." It goes on to say that she was charged 3 more times for having bastard mulatto children. In 1707, she was ordered sold to pay for her fines. It also says that she was probably the ancestor of Joseph c 1747, Benjamin c 1748, and Solomon c 1750.

Francis Makemie was a very influential man and is credited with being the father of Presbyterianism in the Colonies. Google him...

When I see "indentured servant" I think of all of the British who came here as servants, but in reading further I have found that the Nanticoke "Kings" would often place orphans as indentured servants to the "English." This is what I think happened to Jane.

To say that this has been a big surprise to me is an understatement! I'm going to refer you to this website -
http://www.mitsawokett.com/MainMenu.html
for more information on these families and a little more about the Sammons of Sussex. For some, this heritage has been an open secret hanging around the family for generations. For my family, it was something that was never passed on. Jesse and Leah moved to Beaver Co, PA before the War of 1812 and this "secret" died with them.

Feel free to write me at rivermet@aol.com

Marcia

Sheila - I'm under the impression that Leah was the daughter of Isaac Sr and Barsheba / Bursheba (Thomas and Mary Jane Debry Walls). Leah was born in 1791 and married Jesse Walls in 1805 at age 14.

Barsheba/Bursheba couldn't have been 36 in 1800, she married "Reedy Salmons" in 1764. Was that age a typo?

My line:
Marcia 1952
Charles Philip "Phil" McClure 1929
Joseph Lester McClure 1889 - 1941
Joseph Long McClure 1858 - 1929
John McClure - Eleanor Walls (E 1815-1891)
Leah Salmons Walls (1791 - 1865 Van Wert, OH)

Marcia

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Irene Louise Salmons – age 11 weeks”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken about 1896, by Gale, with studios in Joliet, IL and Aurora, IL and she is wearing a christening gown.

I found Irene L. Salmons in the 1900 census for Aurora (Kane Co.) IL, age 3, DOB Sep 1896, living with parents Bert H. Salmons, and Estelle M. Salmons.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Irene L. Salmons.

I'm seeking any info on William A. Salmons, born either 1816 or 1818 in Warren County, Kentucky. By 1848, he married Ruth Preston in Illinois. He had several children in Illinois: John H. in 1851, Americus I. in 1854, Susan C. in 1859, and Andrew in 1861. In 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War for the Illinois Infantry. By 1863, he was discharged with a disability in Louisville, Kentucky.

Any information, especially info on his parents, siblings, or his death would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact me at kkona3@yahoo.com if desired.
