I have his birth year as 1854 and death around 1910. He married Joanna Jane Eaves, they lived in Shelby County Texas. I cannot find any information on his parents. Their children were George Washington, Robert Lee, John, Edward, Pearl, Ada and Jesse Clinton, who is my great-grandfather. Any info would be appreciated!

Still don't know the location of George Samford's burial lot in Tahoka Cemetery, but know now that his second wife was Mary Davis. She was married before and had two sons who were well-educated professional men. Don't know their names because my source doesn't know. She is on the 1920 census with George Samford in Tahoka and she's 60 years old. Can't be the first Mary because she died in 1909. Perhaps he's buried next to his second wife, but haven't found proof yet. Cathey

Hi there, I am trying to locate the burial plot of George Watkins Samford. His obituary does say that he was buried in the Tahoka Cemetery, which is known as the old cemetery today. The family plot is Block 2, Space 35 Mary Jane is buried there in Lot 1, but it gives her first name as Elizabeth. I have talked to a gentleman in the offices of the City of Tahoka, and he tells me that there are 3 lots in that block besides Mary Jane's burial. Hers is the only one that's occupied. I understand that Mary Jane died Oct. 7, 1909 and that George died Oct. 23, 1926. The obituary names his wife as a survivor, but doesn't give her name, that I saw anyway. Does anyone know the name of the woman he was married to at his death and is it possible that he is buried beside her?
The following page shows George Samford as the owner of Block 2, Space 35.
http://www.tahoka-texas.com/CM_MASTER_REPORT_-_1408.pdf

Sadly, I found the obituary of the original poster, Lance Samford.

But, yes Lance, I know your family. You are from the Brown County (Brownwood and neighboring Coleman) Samfords who go back to James Watkins Samford (Tennessee) and Nancy Ann Tooley (Ky).

Your grandfather was my wife's father's uncle...Jesse was the son of John R. Sanford, who in 1910, was living on a farm in Brown County...Jesse's brother was my wife's grandfather.
James Samford and Nancy Ann Tooley migrated to Missouri after their marriage in Muhlenberg, KY.

James was killed by a bull in Missouri, and Nancy and her children migrated to the frontier of central Texas.

The Samford family continues in Texas to this day. My wife (Linda Samford) is descended from James Samford through his son John Richard Samford (Elizabeth Ann Glasgow) through their son Byron E Samford (Ruby Smith) through their son Milton Leroy Samford (my wife's father).

You can find John Richard Samford (born 11/1864 in Mo) in the June 1900 census living in Brown County, Texas (Brownwood) which is the central ancestral home of this Texas branch of the Samfords.

Sanford/Samford of GA, Jesse Sanford & Jane Bryson, 1824

Looking for someone who is familiar with Jesse Sanford & Jane Bryson, md in Habersham, Co, GA, in 1824. I am trying to trace Jane’s family line. Jane is reportedly born in Pendleton District, SC, in 1801.

There are only two Brysons listed on the 1800 & 1810 census’, Daniel H. and John, who were brothers. By 1810, only Daniel lists daughters under 10.

I am trying to find someone who can substantiate the claim that Jane Bryson Sanford was, indeed, born in Pendleton district. People who have submitted to the Ancestry family tree for Daniel do not list Jane at all, but the offspring listed do not match the ages of daughters in the census. There is one girl missing. PLUS, Daniel’s son, Daniel Jr., moved to Habersham Co about 1820, which helps explain (sister) Jane’s travel to that county.

If you have or know of documentation or interviews with someone who would know, please contact me at davewilson@bellsouth.net.
Hello Mike, just read your message. Did you know that Douglas Virgil Samford died recently, grandson of Douglas Virgil "Daniel" Samford, son of Elmer Samford? Would you have the siblings of Douglas and Oleta? Don't even know who Oleta married or dates of her birth/death etc. Thanks Barbara

Hi Cousin, I remember going to Cousin Allen's home the evening before Uncle Buck was buried the next day. I realized recently that I didn't have some info on Uncle Buck's children and grandchildren. First omission would be the children of Roger Ben. I know Ailene who married Jack Roberson. Jack was my math teacher in junior high. But who are her siblings, their spouses etc. Ben isn't on the 1830 census nor Uncle Buck that I can find. So I am missing children. Hope you can help me. Heck, just realized we had already corresponded on Uncle Buck's family. Guess I am in a fog today, but still need/want the info on Ben's family. Thanks, Barbara

It was nice to hear from you. Yes he is buried in Tahoka and so is his wife. My grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Eubanks and her mother was James Effie ( Jimmie) Samford. I am trying very hard to get all the info that I can.I would really like to find out more about his parents. And my grandmother swore that there was some indian somewhere in the family, But I believe it to be on the Eubanks side but I am checking out all possibilities. There are several of his grand children and children buried in Tahoka also. If you would like to contact me direct, I would love that we may have info the other one is looking for. Thanks Kathleen

My wife is Linda Samford and your Samford was her Uncle Jesse's boy (killed in a mortar attack in Viet Nam). My wife's father was Milton Leroy Samford (Jesse's brother) and his father was Byron Samford (also my wife's brother's name). The family is fairly mysterious in that my wife's father left home young and didn't dicuss family. If you find out more, let me know...thanks:

Ken Baer kbaer@comcast.net

Buck's daughter is my maternal grandmother, Beulah Samford Risinger, Shelby County, Texas.
I have never heard that story about the Samford name. Sounds possible. Also I do not have a Elkanah Sanford (JR.) listed any where in his children.I have ten children listed for him, all born in Alabama.
Anything you would be able to share abt the Samfords would be very appreciated, as I know little abt them.
Thanks
Linnie Crump

Before moving to Tx Castleberry's were in Bradely Co Arkansas. And living with a James Castleberry.????
My GGF Edward Newton was born in Arkansas.

I think also the the sisters Mary and Maragrett are "Glasgow"(father) and "Jeans"(Mother) surnames.

But I may be getting the 2 "Samford" Families confused.

I do have proof (Copy Mrriage Certificate) now that Edward Newton Castleberry married Miss Maude May McClurg in McLennon Tx Oct 1895. Also a couple years later Aug 1898 there was a "P.F. Castleberry" who married Miss Una "Middleton". This P.F. Castleberry is I believe my GGF's brother. There were flowers sent to GGF's funeral in the name of P.F. Castleberry.

Thank you for your help and any more would be greatful from anyone especially for the Castleberry connection to Samford.
I can be contacted at
wannamae@arkansas.net
Thanks,
Lawana

Wendy,
Your gggrandpa George is in Rains County, TX of 1880 in household of E. Samford (his mother Sarah Elizabeth Creel Samford). They were enumerated June 11, 1880, household 171.

E. Samford is head of household with sons George age 26 and Tho (for Elijah Thomas) age 12; and daughters "M" and Callie. The "M" was Missouri Delaware who also went by Della. On another page of same census was George's brother Henry Franklin Samford and his wife.

Diana
