Re: Benjamin Riley Sams

Benjamin Riley Sams is my husband's great grandfather as well. His grandfather is Albert, the youngest of 10 children. According to the information we have, Benjamin died of cancer when Albert was a small child. Albert's older sister Chessie (born Oct 28, 1892) took care of Albert when he was a boy. If the information I have is correct Benjamin Riley Sams and his wife Laura Isadora Haisten are buried at Inman Church below Fayetteville, GA. Benjamin's parents, Riley and Evelyn are buried in Cullman, Alabama. Albert and Chessie Sams Rivers gave me this information in an oral interview 30+ years ago. My husband remembers your grandfather Asbury from the Sams' family reunions.

Joseph Sams Farmersville OH/later KY

Looking for info for Joe Sams. Would have been divorced with a couple daughters. Was divorced. Lived above a bar in Farmersville OH in about 1953 ish. Later moved to KY. Would guess he was born around 1930 +/-

This is a total shot in the dark...but figured what the heck! I understand he may have had a brief affair with my grandmother and my mother is the result:) Oops. This is a family secret...always the joke that she was the milkmans...apparently close enough:) Never had the guts to discuss with my grandmother, now she is gone. Always resulted in tension and hard feelings between my mother and grandmother....would like to help my mom solve this mystery. We don't need anyhthing, just would be nice to know WHO we are, at least for medical purposes. I realize this revolation could cause his family distress....but the Truth is the truth...And hey, who knows, maybe we would like each other! Once met a guy with the same last name on a job site, looked so much like my brother I was freaked out...but chickened out in asking more questions.

Sorry for the book....any help would be most appreciated!

Not sure if you got this resolved but my Grandmas Dad was Jackson Nathan Sams born 1888 to Daniel and Rose Sams (Davis). Jack was married to 2 different sisters Lucy Mae Willard and Maude Willard, and they had 5 kids Mary, Martha, Jackie, Elma, & Thelma. If this is who you are looking for you are my new best friend because Rose Davis does not exist anywhere and the only reference to Daniel being married was to a Mary E. Sams. I hope you get this since your post is so old.

Re: Rice Sams

Rice Sams B. July 26, 1833 and Matilda Hutchins Sams, B. Dec. 28,, 1838 were my mother's paternal grandparents. I have recently placed a replacement stone on their grave at the Ann Wesley cemetery, Roddy Branch road, Blount Co., TN. Rice,s father was also named Rice, b. 1804 married to Rebecca Thacker(y). Rice II and Matilda had 13 children, 8 of which lived to adulthood. George was number 8. He met his wife Annis, as I understand, while hunting near Tellico Plains, TN.
My maternal grandfather was Doc (Ernest Carl) Sams, who was the youngest child of Rice II and Matilda. George and Annis are buried in the Clark's Grove cemetery in Blount Co. TN. Also buried there is his oldest brother, J.T., who died 2 months short of 100 y.o.; and his wife Belle. Also, George's sister and bro-in-law, Lillie and Azro Wayman. J.T.'s passing 5/16/59 was noted in a front page article of the Maryville, Times.
Rice II served in the 63rd Tenn. Confederate infantry for about one year, and, one of Matilda's brothers (Eldridge Hutchins) served in the Tenn. Union 8th cavalry, dying in service at Gallatin, TN. Aug. 23,1864. Rice and Matilda moved from Hawkins County TN. to Rockford TN. in 1869. George therefore was born in Blount Co. Feb. 16,1871.

Matilda Hutchins Sams passing Aug. 6, 1917 was noted on the front page of the Maryville, TN. paper that week (The Maryville Enterprise 8/9/17 - on microfilm Maryville, TN. Library)

I have been looking for Benjamin Riley Sams for quite some time - it seems that he was born in 1861 in Muscadine, Alabama and died in Georgia in 1914. He was married to Lura E. Haisten and had many children, one if which was my grandfather Asbury Benjamin Sams. Does anyone recognize this name? I am at a complete loss - I can't find him in other Alabama records leading me to believe that his family might not have been originally from Alabama at all. Please help!

Thanks,
Margaret

Thanks for looking. Very interesting article.

I just sent an e-mail to the author, Bruce Whitaker to ask if he can share the source of the documentaion. I assume if the SAR accepted Edmund Sams as a vet, there must be some documentation other than Sondley's book which gave no documentation. I also ask him if there was a part two, since the article was written in 2008.

When I visit there again, I will go by the Newton Cemetery and take a look. I guess I have not been back since the marker was placed there.

Between my post and your post, I did a little more searching and found this article: http://fairviewtowncrier.com/2011/08/captain-edmund-sams-par... Some questions are answered there, but we may have to wait for part II for more information. Note the last paragraph which states that the SAR "will hold a grave marker dedication for Capt. Edmund Sams (1750–1845) and William Forster II (1748–1830) at Newton Academy Cemetery in Asheville..."

Good to hear from you. I am glad to know your line and will add you to the database.

At this point I am doubtful of the family stories that Edmund was an "Indian fighter in the revolutionary war", since there no records that I have found to support it.There may have been a Sams that was part if the 1835 Indian removal on the Trail of Tears. I would have to look back to see which one.

I thought if Edmund had served, there might be some good family records at the DAR library, but alas they have nothing on him. Wonder how he got the Capt in his name. Was that associated with the ferry that he ran across the French Broad?

Sams family of Athens

My Mom was one of the twins (Thelma Faye) of Maude and Nathan Sams. She left Ohio with my Dad, Bert (Scotty) Denovan, after WW 2 to move to Washington state. They had me, Donna Jean and my brother Bob Denovan. I am 64 and my brother is 62. We are both married. My husband's name is Tim Knapp and we have four kids, Gina, Paul, Jacob and Jason and three Grandchildren. Bob is married to Linda and has three kids, David, Kelly and Samantha Faye and they live in Arizona. They have one Grandchild.

I used to love to come to Ohio on the train to visit my Grandma Maude, my Aunt Elma, Uncles Jack, Danny and Glen and my Mom's half-sisters, Mary and Martha. Grandma Maude was a very devout woman and from what I understand Grandpa Nathan was a minister. He slipped on icy stairs when my Mom was about 14 and broke his back and died a few days later. His first wife, who was Grandma Maude's sister, died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Mom's half-sisters, Mary and Martha were from that marriage.

Hello, Yes, you would be David's cousin. I have quite a bit on the Sams family and related ancesters. Matter of fact, I have @85 direct ancester names. I know Armand and his daugter Vicki has also done research on the Sams. My problem is getting all of this information typed into a post/email. Just got my computer back from being worked on and my FTM information was lost..thank heavens I also keep written notes. I would suggest you contact either Armand and/or Vicki. If for some reason you can't get the information you need, email me and I will see what I can do to get you the information. It might take a while, I am having surgery in 2 weeks so I will be out of commission for awhile but perhaps during my recuperation at home I can get something started. email me personally if you need Vicki's email address. Samswhitedog@aol.com
