Re: Samson Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

I have cpmpletely lost track of the reason for the message and the connection for Edgar unless I was thinking he was a sibling of this chap I have:

Re: Elmswell, Suffolk Parish Look-ups.
Robesure (View posts) Posted: 19 Nov 2010 10:02AM

Classification: Query
Surnames:
I doubt if the parish records of Elmswell would help you unless the couple married there, which I doubt as James (not John) was born in Colchester Essex and Emma in East Bergholt. It is more likely that the marriage was in East Bergholt. If you purchase a copy of the birth certificate of any of the children, this will give the mother's maiden name.

The reason that you cannot find the family prior to 1891 is that they were using the surname SANSOM. There is a marriage of a James Sansom in the Samford district,(which includes East Bergholt), Dec.Quarter 1857, volume 4a, page 1199. A possible partner with that reference is an Emma Pettingale. However these references are not complete because of the poor condition of the copies from which they are taken and I cannot see an Emma Pettingale born in East Bergholt on the 1851 census, although there was a birth registered in Samford in 1840, of an Emma Pettengale, which would make her about the right age, for your Emma Curtis/Sansom. A copy of James Sansom's marriage certificate will give you the answer.

In 1861 James Sansom 24 a platelayer and Emma 20 are living at Railway Street, Newmarket, with a son James 2. In 1871 they are now in Elmswell with James 12, William 8, George 5 and Edward 3. In 1881 they are at Elmswell Road, Elmswell with additional children, John 9 Emma 6 and Eliza 5.

Come 1891 as you are aware they have for some reason changed there name to Curtis and are still living in Elmswell with the younger children.

Wonder if this james rings any bells with your Tree??

- Clifjade ( London )

A B Samson born 1775 in England

I am looking for anyone who may have information about my maternal ggrandfather. I don't know a great deal about him, but I do know he was born about 1775 in England. He immigrated to the U.S. and married my gggrandmother (most likely in Baltimore, Maryland) Fanny Middleton in about 1855 or 1856. They moved to San Francisco and started their family. I am not sure what kind of business he was involved in, but I believe he was a jeweler. He was wealthy by the days standards, and his daughters travelled quite frequently while growing up to Europe. A.B. Samson and Fanny had four daughters, all born in San Francisco, Ca.: Rebecca M. Samson born 1857-1931, Adelaide Louise Samson Munday born 1859-1940, Mary A. Samson born 1864-1931, and my ggrandmother Reis Samson born 1872-1930. A.B. died in 1870. I have no documentation to tell me what his initials A.B. stood for. If anyone has any information that could help, it would be so very appreciated!

His widow, Elizabeth, died 12/15/1911.

No death certificate can be found for him in Trenton.

Also need the regiment or ship he served during the war.

I am not related to him.

Bob

http://ourbrothersgonebefore.wetpaint.com

Re: Henry Samson's wife Anne Plummer?

What are those sources? Please specify because:
The GSMD "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations Vol. 20 Parts 1 - 3 family of Henry Samson" published in 2000, 2005 & 2006 does not list the parents of Anne Plummer or an Elizabeth Metcalf. The "Vital Records of Plymouth, Massachusetts to the Year 1850" merely gives a date of marriage but no parents of either Henry or Anne Plumer [sic] and does not list an Elizabeth Metcalf. "The Pilgrim Migration - Immigrants to Plymouth Colony 1620-1633" by Robert Charles Anderson names Henry's wife Anne Plummer but does not give her parents and does not mention an Elizabeth Metcalf. "Plymouth Colony - Its History & People 1620-1691" by Eugene Aubrey Stratton, FASG, in 1986 merely states that Henry married Anne Plummer, listing no parents for her. He includes a separate "biographical sketch" for Anne stating that she was Henry's wife and that she was probably the sister of Mary Plummer, first wife of John Barnes but does not mention the parents of either Anne or Mary or include anywhere an Elizabeth Metcalf. The "English Ancestry of Seven Mayflower Passengers: Tilley, Sampson and Cooper" by Robert Leigh Ward in TAG #52 (1976) does not mention Henry's wife at all. Ward's article "Henry Sampson's Paternal Grandfather" in TAG 56 mentions Henry's wife Anne Plummer but no parents of Anne Plummer and does not list an Elizabeth Metcalf. Gov. William Bradford's history "Of Plimoth Plantation" includes Pilgrim Henry Samson only in the passenger lists, merely stating that he married but does not name his wife. John Adams Vinton's "Genealogical Memoirs of the Sampson Family in America From the Arrival of the Mayflower in 1620 to the Present Time" published in 1864 does not list the parents of "Ann Plummer" or include an Elizabeth Metcalf. Volumes I and II of "Plymouth Church Records 1620-1859" include no Elizabeth Metcalf.
(Mr.) Stacy B. C. Wood, Jr., Co-Founder
Pilgrim Henry Samson Kindred

For information about American Revolutionary War heroine Deborah Sampson, please visit www.PilgrimHenrySamsonKindred.org. Click on "Abraham Sampson Descendants Report" in the upper right corner of the home page and then download the Report. Deborah Sampson was a 2nd Great Granddaughter of Abraham Sampson who settled in Duxbury, MA, by Dec 1638. She married Benjamin Gannett, Jr. and you can check the line down from her for a number of generations. Perhaps there is a descendant close to you. You can also have a look at the Report's All Name Index (it includes dates) for the same information.
The Pilgrim Henry Samson Kindred (PHSK) accepts descendants of Abraham who is a most likely first cousin of Pilgrim Henry. both being from Bedfordshire, England. If you send me your e-mail address I will send you a few past copies of our thrice-a-year newsletters. Deborah was featured in our first issue (Spring/Summer 2006).
(Mr.) Stacy B. C.
I think we may be trying to track the same family. I have a John Samson who married an Adelade. They are listed on the 1910 census report for Douglas County, Nebraska as John and Adelaide Samson. Their children are listed as George (17 yrs), Cora (15 yrs), Delbert (12 yrs) and Leora (8 yrs). I am not related to them, but I am related to Leora's husband Charles Larimer and their daughter Irma Larimer. I'm looking for information on this family. Leora died of cancer and Charles died from a car accident. Both died close to the year of 1940.

Please let me know if you think this is your same John and Adelade Samson.

Thank You,

Mary

You are correct that Tanguay made an error regarding Etienne Samson's parents. This has caused a lot of confusion for Samson descendants trying to find their ancestry. In the Drouin Collection, Parish of Beaumont, it is clearly written that Etienne, husband of Madeleine Charron, was the son of Jean Samson & the deceased Charlotte Lecours (this was Jean Baptiste Samson & Marie Charlotte Lecours).
Wealthy Chase is in my genealogy also. My grandmother was a Johnston from Perry, ME and I believe it is through her line that we go back to Wealthy Chase and eventually to John Alden on the Mayflower. It's been such a long time since I've looked at the fan chart that I can't recall much about it. However, I do know that there are "double cousins" and I believe at least one set of those falls in the Stickney line. I think sister's married brother's somewhere in the line and that created double cousins. Oh the tangled webs we weave.... My sister is the geneaologist of the family and will put you in touch with her.

Etienne/Lecours
As far as I found in my ancestry research, Etienne married Marie M. Lafrenierre Charron in Beaumont (8 miles east of Lévis) feb. 03 1739
Etienne was the son of Jean Baptiste Samson and Marie Charlotte Lecours who never married at the church. I got them married in front of a public notary. That was common in these days. Going to the church was a matter of faith.
Jean Baptiste S. was the son of Gabriel S. who was the son of Toussain S. residing in St. Gatien des Bois in France
Gabriel and his brother came in new France as engaged by....
To help him estabish in new France, at the end of their therm they were given the choice of going back in France or establish themself in New France, which they did.
Gabriel married Francoise Durand Nov. 29 1669
Jacques married Marie Anne Métru march 26, 1739
Jacques is my ancester...
According to PRDH (www.genealogie.umontreal.ca), Etienne's parents are Jean-Baptiste Samson and Marie-Charlotte LeCours. If you haven't tried PRDH, it is worth the price. You buy a set number of hits and can renew any time you like. I am descended from Jean-Baptiste's brother Louis dit Ignace Samson, so I guess we are distant cousins. Good luck on your search.

Thank you for the information and the advice.

Another distant Samson cousin (descended from Jacques, which Tanguay incorrectly gives as "my" Etienne's father) also contacted me directly with the solution to the "puzzle".

I still appreciate the help, though, cousin!

Etienne Samson & Madeleine Charron

Greetings,
I'm hoping someone has solved this puzzle. Etienne & Madeleine (m. 3 Feb 1739) are a set of my 6th great-grandparents. Their daughter, Genevieve (b. 1742) is one of my 5th great-grandparents, along with Joseph Blanchet (m. 26 Feb 1759).
The uncertainty is: who are Etienne's parents?
In Tanguay's dictionary, Vol. 7, p. 113, Tanguay points to Jacques and Anne Metru (m. 26 Nov 1671) as Etienne's parents. This marrigae/family is shown on p. 114 and lists Etienne as one of their children.
However, another source (mesaieux.com) points to Jean and Charlotte Lecours (m. abt. 1706?) as Etienne's parents. Adding to the puzzle: on p. 113 of Tanguay's Vol. 7, the marrige/family of Jean-Baptiste & Charlotte is shown, listing Etienne as one of their children.
So, this is clearly one of Tanguay's errors; which is the correct set of parents? (I've seen family trees posted in RootsWeb going both ways.)
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
Simeon

wow so we're like long lost cousins LOL
you know more then I do about my own family LOL
My grandfather Arman, Napoleon's son committed suicide when my father was 7 (in 1964 i believe)and the Samson family dissociated themselves from my grandmother, because they blamed her for his death.
My uncle (Armans oldest kid 18 when he died) told me he had a metal plate in his head and it caused him extreme discomfort, which was the true cause plus the death of 2 twins stillborn sent him over the edge.
Im gonna try and find some more info on the remaining Samsons here in the willimantic area and let you know what i can find
thanks for the info we've been trying to find the area in Canada for a while now

The area that my grandmother comes from is the Three Rivers area of Quebec. They were part of the Ojibwa indian tribe. I
think the town name was St. Yamocice P.Q. Canada. Napolean
was my grandmothers brother, her name was Aldea(Samson)Mahue. They lived in Willimantic. But came from Quebec.
