My great grandfather was Edward Sandell. He had three brothers, George, Oscar, and Albert, in addition were John, Charles, William and two sisters, Ida(Iva) and Phoebe. Father Nels and mother Eva C. Sandell. Could your Sandells be the same?

I am geographically challenged, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that Finland and Sweden were one country way back and when they immigrated to the US sometimes the two were mixed. In any case, I had a great-aunt who was an Eva Sandell and lived in Illinois. I found several of my relatives because of children being named after aunts, etc. At one time, my Sandell's had a farm in Illinois and several of his brother's came over and worked on the farm until they earned enough to strike out on their own. So try Illinois around Springfield. Also you might try Washington State. I came across Finnish Sandells there several years back. Hope this gets you started.

Hi,I am unable to get anywhere with my Finnish ancestry. The only information I have is something my grandmother wrote on a piece of paper and is not very legible. My grandmother's name was Eva Elizabeth Sandell and had about 8 siblings: Souma, Mari, Minnie(ended up in Florida), Fred, etc. She wrote that her mother's name was Maija Liisa Heikinin born in Waasan (?) Laarri(?) Finland - Jussi. Her father's name was Wilhelm Sandell born Rauma Finland (b 1855?). The settled in Dollar Bay Michigan / Houghton Lake, Michigan. She also wrote down her sister Suoma Senja Sandell married Joe Kruger??? Any lead would help. Especially the names of cities.

Hi Edward definitely died in 1834 and was buried in North Creake. I think that the 1779 that you have probably come from my guesstimate (assuming he was about 21 when he married) that I posted on friendsreunited many years ago. There was an Edward born in 1779 in Saham Toney and there were Shingfields in that village but there is no record of Anne Shingfield in Saham Toney. Edwards father was Edward married to Ann Baldwin. They had two other Edwards who died in 1770 and 1772. Ann Baldwin died in 1786 Edward remarried Elizabeth Salter in 1787.

Still, there is no certainty that it is our Edward

Jack Sandell

Hi Jack, we too nearly ended up in Australia, my parents nearly came over on the £10 passage many moons ago but my mother didn't want to leave her family. How life could have been so different if we had of gone!

The info I have about Edward was that he was born 1779 and died 1883 which would have made him 104, I doubt this is correct though! You are welcome to share and view my tree on genes reunited if you are registered, drop me a line on there and I'll open the tree up to you.

Hi Nigel I am a direct descendant of Edward who married Ann Shingfield (Shinkfield) at North Creake in 1800. I have been looking for years to try to find info on Edward. I'm beginning to think that he may have married Ann as a second wife or that he was born earlier than c.1780 as he died in 1834 in North Creake. If we take the average age at death of male to be of the order of 60/65 then he would have been born about 1770

There are no Sandell's in North Creake parish records between 1550 and 1800, although there are Shinkfields. Adult Sandells mysteriously appeared in the early 1800's in North Creake and surrounds.

Jack Sandell
South Australia

Sorry, I have not been involved in this conversation. I have been very busy lately and have not had time to do any geneology folow-ups. Thanks so much Garry for your information. The Sandels have been the mystery to us in the family history.I had started slowly to piece together info I have gleaned from my Grandfather's diaries that he started writing in 1882 @ age 15.There are many mentions of relatives in them. The last diary I have is from 1915.I'll be glad to pass on any cole info when I get it together.

Yes, I'm looking forward to hearing more from Marlyce too.

After your last message I went looking on google for Catherine Bieber + Sandel, and found the Waltman site, from which I gleaned a good deal (saw your name there too), as well as the Gordner & Bieber sites. If you have more beyond what's on the Waltman site, or more about Michael's siblings mentioned on the Gordner site, I'd certainly appreciate it! Thanks for all your help.

HI,
The oddest entry that I have ever seen in the 1910 census for King county Wash.
Victor Sandal 52 widow, Russian Polish, parents born Finland, laborer of odd jobs. I do know that the Finnish were often put as born in Russia as Russia"ruled'them back then.
He has no kids living with him then.
Alicia

Re: Sandell's from Sweden

Hi,
I was researching Sandell for someone else when I saw your message. There are some really wierd coincidenses with my family thourgh.
My ggrandfather by marrage, was from Sweden. His name was supposedly Charles but called Carl and his last name was something like Schrewneh. His wife's name was Hannah Etta Shelly or Helberg. They changed their name to Sanderson when they got here.
Shelberg and Helberg are awfully close, Anderson and Sanderson are close and if you throw the name Carl in there, that's a lot of similarities. Is it possable Hannah and Christina could have been sisters ? Or maybe Schrewneh was a maiden name from one of their mothers. I always wondered how they got Sanderson from Shrewneh...maybe they didn't ...maybe it was Anderson and the "s" was added here in America.
Do you have any info on Carl John's brothers or sisters ? Excuse me if I sound kind of excited...I've never been able to find anything on than branch of the family. Even though I'm not related to the Sanderson's except by marrige, until my dad was 65 he thought that Carl Isadore Sanderson ( Charles & Hannah's son) was his father. So as far as I'm conserned, Carl was my grandfather. He lived with us til he died in January 1966.
So any info I can get will be really appriciated. Thanks lots,
Cathy Lowe
