Obituary: Maxine Sandoval

MAXINE SANDOVAL Everyone from patients to friends knew her as Max. She was born Maclovia Anita Martinez in Amalia, New Mexico, April 6, 1921 and raised in Douglas, Wyoming. Her father, Luis, called her "Maque". She was one of 13 siblings; 2 brothers and 10 sisters. Max had gorgeous movie star eyes, a beautiful warm smile and was quick to laugh. She could laugh so hard, she would cry. Her most evident characteristic was her goodness. She was kind and loving. It's no mystery why she chose to be a nurse. That was her nature. To the end, she was concerned for everyone else before herself. She picked beets, helped raise her siblings, spoke only Spanish until she was thirteen. She hated it when her mother, Fedelina, wrung chickens' necks. She walked a long distance to school when she finally went to kindergarten at age eight. She received her degree as a registered nurse in Alliance, Nebraska. One of her early assignments was as a private caregiver to Ernest Hemingway's wife, Mary. In her professional capacity, she once accompanied a young female prisoner and her baby cross country by train from Santa Barbara, California to Washington, D.C. She worked at the Veterans Hospitals in Albuquerque, NM and in Kansas City, MO. It was at the one in Albuquerque where she met a young disabled veteran named Bennie. Apparently, she told him she was attracted to him because, unlike the others, he brushed his teeth. That's probably why he became a dentist. He continued to brush his teeth through their 64 years together. She supported him during his schooling. And when he did start his practice, she did everything from setting up the office to chair side assisting to bookkeeping to cleaning. She loved Coors, her toy poodles, Pierre ( I and II) and Antoine (Tony), dancing (although she was shy to do so in front of others), her Karmann Ghias (she had 2 of them over the years), although she always claimed that a red corvette was her ideal car of choice. She always wanted to learn to play the piano and eventually bought one (a player piano), but never took it up. She made the best beans and chile, was proud of her meatloaf and dutifully made a tuna casserole on Friday when she was supposed to abstain from meat. She was a very devout Catholic. She adhered to the ideals of how to treat your fellow human beings set forth by Jesus, just like St. Francis. ("Saint Francis of Assisi, reflection of Christ through your life of poverty and humility, grant us through your intercession the graces we so much need for soul and body. Especially during this novena, we ask for Maclovia. We also ask your blessings on all those whom we love. Amen" , from the last part of a novena in St. Francis' name...) She was able to visit Assisi, Italy with her boy, Michael, and see first hand where St. Francis lived and died. Of course, she was in awe of the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. She found a soul sister and friend in her daughter-in-law, Linda, whom she adored and was tickled to the point of giddiness whenever she was in the presence of her granddaughter, Olivia. You could actually measure the love in her eyes for them both. Everyone who met her was affected by her. One could not help but recognize her humanity. Maxine was someone special. Maxine passed away on August 26th at her home. Her final breaths were accompanied by a dramatic thunderstorm. When she breathed her last, a gentle rain began to fall and the most beautiful sunset appeared. Maxine is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Dr. Ben Sandoval, who faithfully cared for her at home until her death. She is also survived by her son, Miguel, her daughter-in-law, Linda and her granddaughter, Olivia, as well as two sisters, Mary and Laura and numerous nieces and nephews. There are no services pending. Interment will take place at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at an undisclosed time in the future. Bless her heart. Bless her spirit. Grace walks behind her. Grace walks before her. Grace walks all around her. Grace walks with her. En paz descansa.

Re: sandoval history

The only Hector I've found in our direct line was born in Pittsburg California, but returned to El Paso and died as a child on a road near Ysleta (now a part of El Paso). His father, Jesus Jose Sandoval, returned to Mexico and his mother, Concepcion Terrazas, stayed in Ysleta. So, this is not the person you are looking for. But, my ancestor was a younger son and his descendents moved from Valle de Olivos to the San Ignacio (in the next valley) sometime in the 19th Century. There were other Sandovals in Valle de Olivos after that, who might be the children of his older brother(s). (They show up in the 1930 Mexico census, among other places.) I'm still looking for our Hector's brothers or their descendents: They were Ernesto and Alonso Sandoval, who were both born in Pittsburg, California and grew up in Ysleta with their mother.

I have lived in Houston, Texas for twenty-something years. My uncle in Monterrey, NL, Mexico is mapping out our family tree and we would welcome any information we can get. My grandfather's name is Delfino (Gil)Sandoval-Garza and he married Evangelina Cuevas-Alanis. They have seven sons that survived. Gilberto, Arturo, Francisco, Jesus, Isidro, Ignacio and Rafael. They all live in different parts of the USA and one in Mexico. I went to Albaquerque, NM because I plan on moving there and drove by Sandoval county while on my way to Santa Fe. I would like to find out how it got it's name too. Where is Springer, NM?

Given that his religious status was protestant. And he was also the census taker. Any information on Manuel would be very helpful to me. Thanks.

Hello. My great-grandfather Manuel Sandoval was born 1875.Census records from 1930 indicate he was living in esparanza, san ignacio,ch. He was also the census taker for that area and was Protestant. He was married to Bernardina Ramos, whom I believe passed away in 1927.
One of their sons, Raul Sandoval, is my grandfather. He was born in Torreon,in 1908 and died 1984.He married Elisa Villalobos. b. 1915 d 1960.

They had about 9 children.
Daniel,Elvira,Irma,Raul,Benjamin,Joel,Abel,Miguel angel, and Norma .

Abel is my father b 1948.

thanks
