The Sandy/s surname is not common in the US and there were very few men with the surname in colonial America. The William Sandy who married Dinah Wood was the son of Vincent Sandy and Jemima Marmaduke of Westmoreland County Virginia. Although no male descendant(with a Sandy surname)from William's line of the family has submitted DNA to the Sand/s/Sandy/s genealogy project, the Westmoreland Sandy lines that have done so demonstrate British origins. The name of the original colonial immigrant has not been proven. My 19th century Sandy ancestors claimed descendancy from the Archbishop of York under Elizabeth I, Dr. Edwin Sandys and in 1850 changed the spelling of our surname to reflect that belief. My Sandys line has identical Y-dna with a Sandy line in the US that claims descendancy from Dr. Edwin's 2nd son, Sir Edwin Sandys (although this claim seems doubtful based on the historical record.) The Sands family of Block Island claims descendancy from Dr. Edwin's 6th son, the Reverend Henry Sandys. Yet Y-Dna from this line doesn't match mine and the other Sandy line mentioned above. Also, A 19th century Sandys line from Mecklenburg VA claimed descendancy from Dr. Edwin's firstborn son Sir Samuel Sandys. Unfortunately no one from this line has submitted Y-Dna to the family project.

Julie Sandys Bianchi in St Louis

I have traced my husband's family back to William Sandy (b-around 1759, d-before 1800) and wife - Dinah Wood (b-?, d-12/11/1828) in VA (Not accurate on the dates). Does anyone have anything more accurate, and also William's parent's names or time or arrival in America from what country?

Thank you for helping. I think I have found the death record for Avie, not for certain just yet. What interests me is her child is a first cousin to my mother, and they don't know each others name, and my mom would love to meet this lost cousin. My mother is getting up in years now, and I don't know just how much longer we have to find her/him. We have been told the child was a daughter, but I don't know. Everyone who could tell us something concrete either has memory problems, etc, associated with old age. I had to find a copy of Uncle Bob's death record to even find out Avies name, which was in July of this year. I have a photo of two children that belonged to Avie, don't know if she had two or just one when she married my great uncle. Both are toddlers and both have dresses on, but, at that time, even the boys were dressed in dresses until they reached a certain age. My Grandmother loved Avie, but my Great Grandfather did not, and when she and Bob separated, she wrote him, however, my Great grandfather destroyed the letters before Bob got them, if he even knew they had come. My grandmother slipped the photo out of one of the letters and hid it in her apron. Bob died shortly after that, when he had been drinking and passed out on the train tracks, a train hit him.

I checked my Sandy family tree - did not see her there. However, I did check a couple sources and I got a surprise. I don't know if this is correct, but I believe:

Avie and Owen's marriage certificate says they are from Braxton Co, WV. Her father is Henry Lee Sandy.

The parents of Henry Lee Sandy (1870-1959) are Abe Sandy (c 1852 -?) and Fannie Losh (1843 - 1888).
Abe (Abram Lewis Sandy, age 23) and Fannie (Virginia Frances Losh, age 32) were married in 1875 in Lewis Co, WV. He lived in Gilmer Co, WV, she lived in Lewis Co , WV. Both were born in Rockingham, Va.

Looks like Fannie had at least a 5 yr old when married Abe so is Losh her married or maiden name? Then again, I just quickly checked this so I could be wrong on all accounts.

The thing that surprised me is that I have branches of both the Sandy and the Losh families in my tree. I have traced both families to Rockingham Va during the same time period but have not focused on them beyone that.

If you research the Sandy or Losh line further, please keep me updated on what you have found.

Sources of info:
Avie: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=843806...

Henry Lee Sandy: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=4570247&Typ...

Marriage of Abram Lewis Sandy and Virginia Frances Losh: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=10711711&Ty...
It's a sad story: Icie married Joseph Preston Sandy and they had 2 children: Lester Sandy and Lillian Sandy. By 1910, Icy is a patient in the WV Hospital for the Insane. Lester and Lillian are living with Joseph's mother (Drucilla Lamb Sandy - widowed) and their uncle. Lester is 8 and Lillian is 5. Lillian dies of diptheria at age 7. By 1920, Lester (age 17) is living with his Dad - they are boarders with a family by the name of Spears and they both work as coal miners. By 1930, they are still working at the mines and boarding at the Spears home. Later in 1930, Lester marries Ruby May Johnson and they have 8 children.
Joseph died in 1950 and Lester died in 1951.

Icy died in 1924 still a patient at hospital (hospital name was changed to the Weston State Hospital. (It is well known as a horrible place to have been due to overcrowding, what we now consider barbaric methods of treatment of patients, and the reasons for admission -- reasons we today would not call insanity.) Don't laugh - but it is reported to be one of the most haunted places in the US. It has relatively recently been privately bought and is now called Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

I have pieced this together through conversations with family and records which can be found online at the West Virginia Culture and History website. They have very good records and you can view the actual documents from their website.

Lots of folks looking for Sandy's in the owrld lately, wonder why? Anyway I am a Sandy, Phillip to be exact and as I understand it we came from the Dunn clan of Scotland. Many located in the midwest. I hail from southern Il. myself.Dad's got the same name, grand pa is/was Adrian Warren Sandy, with a brother named Pat and Hugh Lynn Sandy. Adrian's dad, my great grand daddy was Phillip Dean Sandy, and as it turns out there was a Phillip Sandy in the civil war, but that is to be expected since most sui juris males were involved in some form or fashion of the tyrrant Lincoln's war, the only president to ever declare martial law and in so doing suspended the writ of habeus corpus, anyway my Aunt Beverly Sandy/Wiseman has a huge tree with tons of info so if you want some of it to cross refer hit me at philsndy@gmail.com till then have a super duper day.
Respectfully in truth and liberty,
Phillip Dean Sandy III

SAMUEL SANDY(S) and family in Wiltshire, England 1600-1700's

Looking for the birth record of SAMUEL SANDY(s)(or any variation of that name) in the 1680's in Wiltshire, England. His parents probably were THOMAS and MARY SANDY of St. Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

The problem: there is a birth record for Samuel Sandy, bap. March 5, 1668, St. Edmunds, Salisbury. Samuel died July 1, 1675, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

There must be another child named Samuel, born sometime later.

A Samuel Sandy married Mary Wareham, September 9, 1705 in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. He probably would have been born in the 1680's, but there doesn't seem to be any record of it. Fordingbridge, Hampshire is only about 10 miles from Salisbury, Wiltshire, and there doesn't seem to be any record of Samuel or a Sandy family in Hampshire before this time which would fit this time line.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Patricia Lobdell, St. Louis, Missouri, U S

I saw your new entries on your Ancestry public tree and I want to make some corrections: 1)The surname of Thomas Sandy's wife Hester is probably NOT HALL. 2)Thomas's birthday of 1693 is based on an erroneous confusion of him with someone else. 3)The rest of the Sandy genealogy back in time comes from a book for which there is no documentation and has some glaring errors, primarily in that it hinges the family roots on a man who died without issue in England. See more detail in my commentary on the Sandy Genforum. Please do not promulgate these errors.

if this is the same Alice M. Sandy, then I absolutely have more information re her decendants. My tree should be public, but here is the link if you want to look around. I have Alice & James B. Marmaduke's original marriage certificate framed. I also have letters written by Alice. All has been passed down. I believe that I have photos as well, but I'm working on authenticating them. I definitely have at least 1 photo of James B. Marmaduke (he went by Berkeley Marmaduke).

Thank you!
Julie

Alice M. Sandy Marmaduke

My 3rd great-grandmother is Alice Sandy Marmaduke. I am looking for information on her family. She had a brother named Edward & a sister Mary J Sandy. Her brother Edward became a preacher in Pittsburgh to groups of troubled women.

I have letters written by Alice to her young daughters in 1903, which is troubling to me because they were so young to be separated from their mother. She alludes to trouble in the family, but gives no specifics. Based on the 1910 census, her daughters are all living with Alice's sister Mary J. Alice's husband James Berkley Marmaduke died in 1892, so I am wondering what caused the later separation of their family.
I have a lot of info on Myrtle Belle Sandy, she was my gGrandmother, though I never knew her. I have a large handwritten chart on 8 children of Uriah Albertus Sandy and Mary Clevinger.(at least 75 descendents, maybe more). I don't think I have all my Sandy's input yet to produce reports for people, but would be happy to do so.

Most all of my names match the discussion in this forum, though one thing I cannot always tell the way my chart is written is which of the offsprint belongs to Uriah & Mary(married couples are recorded on the same line).
-Tim Layton

Hi,
Corbit Pitman (sic) is shown as living in the same house, 12 Ringland Place, in the 1851 census, together with Emma and Maria. There's no mention of Amy. In the 1841 census Charles, Susan and Corbitt are all living in the same house, with no daughters. Susan is shown as being Charles' wife, rather than a sibling.
The following is a record from christening records for 1818

Name: Maria Cannon Sandy
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1818
Christening Date: 27 May 1818
Christening Place: Poole, Dorset, England
Father's Name: Charles Sandy
Mother's Name: Susanna

and from the same records for 1826
Name: Mary Sandy
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1826
Christening Date: 26 Apr 1826
Christening Place: Poole, Dorset, England
Father's Name: Charles Sandy
Mother's Name: Susan

AND

Name: Amey Sandy
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1826
Christening Date: 26 Apr 1826
Christening Place: Poole, Dorset, England
Father's Name: Charles Sandy
Mother's Name: Susan

There don't appear to be any other records for Amey / Amy that I can find.

I hope this helps.

Mark

To Jean Sandy Wenner. Jean, you mentioned a cousin, John Sandy. Do you know if he has had one of the DNA Y-chromosone test? I have and would love to share info with anyone else who has been tested. I am descended from William and Catherine (BECK) SANDY and am listed in the 1983 book, "Descendants of William and Catherine (BECK) Sandy" by Dr. William Allee Sandy and edited by John V. Beck. Would be most happy to share with you and your cousin, John. Thanks - John Sandy of Sandy Egg-Oh, CA, USA

I have info on this line. How are you related? Malinda Sandy married George Baily and had two children Margaret and William. Margeret marries Abraham Shoemaker. Mlinda Baily Shoemaker is either a daugthter or sister to Margaret. She is born the same year Malinda Catherine Bailey dies 1849 sept. I cannot find George Bailey on the census in 1850. Malinda bailey Shoemaker has three kids and is listed as single after 1900. Her brother George is my gggrandad. I have info on other children of Margaret Bailey Shoemaker.

Thank you so much for your reply. It was very helpful. Do you have any info on Asheherzade's or Henry's death or where they are buried? I assume in Ark. Also do you have a list of their children's names? I have the 1860 Ark census that list Henry, age 56- Asheherzade,age46- William,age15- Mary, age 12-and Thomas, age 8. On the 1870 Census, Asheherzade is not listed. So I assume that she died between 1860 and 1870. The 1870 Ark census lists Henry, age 68-Sarah,age4-and Mary Burkett, age 15. Thank you, Debra

That would be Joseph P. Sandy, the oldest son of Henry and Asherezade. (Benton TWP, Fulton County, Arkansas) Their other 1860 neighbor, Nancy Willett, is their oldest daughter.
