There is a line from Simon Sanford via George Washington Sanford to William Ezra Sanford. It is with W.E.'s children that I have a problem. The problem is with the family of a later William Sanford in the 1930 US Census in Connecticut. William Ezra Sanford (b. 1869 in Ontario, Canada) married first Sarah Olive Lindsay, after she died, married Bertha Kelly. He had 2 children named William. (one from each of his wives) First son was William Oston (maybe Aston) Sanford (b. 1894 Ontario). Second son was William Ezra Sanford (II) (b. 1905 Ont. Canada). I believe that this later William Ezra Sanford (II) was a sailor on the Great Lakes. He married Martha Louise (Lulu) Dillabough (b. 1904)

Now the problem.

The 1930 US census has a father/mother listed as William E. Sanford (b. 1896) married to a Bertha L. (b. 1896) (Sanford) which leads one to assume it is William Ezra Sanford(I)with his 2nd wife. However, the ages for the father/mother are very far off for that to be correct. Bertha L. is listed as born in Connecticut which is also incorrect for the older Bertha, born in Canada. Turns out that this William E. (for Earl) Sanford was born in Nova Scotia and not related to the William Ezra Sanford clan.

Hello,
My ex husband is the son of your deceased mother-in-law, Alta Rose McDonald. He was born in Arcata, CA in 1947. He was given up in adoption three days after birth.

Although we are divorced, we have three children together and I am trying to do a family tree for them. Alta Rose is our mystery. I have the court documents as to his birth (she was around 20 at the time). My ex has no interest in reconnecting but my children would love to know more.

Please help us solve the mystery of Alta Rose Sanford McDonald if you can.

Thank you so much.

Lori Larsen
Loril56@hotmail.com
Harold (Hal) Sanford passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 12, 2012. Born in New Boston, Ohio he had 79 years filled with adventure.

Harold joined the U.S. Army when he was just 17, and was awarded a Bronze Star before his Honorable Discharge as a Master Sergeant with 21 years of service including tours in Korea and Vietnam.
He is a member of the VFW Post 3714 in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Harold then served as a U.S. Customs Officer for 20 years. He loved the sea. He loved to fish, could play the harmonica like a pro, and always had a book to read. However, his favorite pastime was telling stories, and he had many to share.

He is survived by his retired traveling companion and wife, Donna Jean, at the family home, his brother Howard (Kathryn), daughter Patti (Eric), son Mike, daughter Pam (Lynn), son Ernie (Shelly), daughter Lyn (Mike), daughter Sylvia, son Karl; and his grandchildren, Tony (Marion), Aubree, Olivia, as well as his great-grandchild, Ezra Hayden.
Preceding him in death was his loving wife of 38 years, Anna Sanford; sisters Mary and Irene, and brother Charlie.

He was always kind, loving, and thought of others first. His generous and loving nature will be missed by all who knew him. May his spirit soar free and fly high with the Eagle.

A Celebration of Life for Harold will be held on March 31, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel.

Scioto

Portsmouth Daily Times - Harold A Sanford 79

I'm hoping to connect with some of the family that lives in Kingston,Ontario Canada.About 20 years ago,a great Granddaughter of Loyal called my brother and asked if he was from the linage of Loyal and Sarah. The lady told my brother that her Grandmother told her many stories about her Great Grandfather Loyal, one of the things was that we had native American linage. The Grandmother said Loyal fathers name was By White Cloud. If there are in relatives that know of this would you please contact me.At the time the lady called my brother, he was not well, so he did not ask many questions. We do know that Loyal daughter married and moved to Canada. We have always thought that Loyal parents were Thomas Sanford and Lucy Kellogg.I cannot find any documentation that proves this I wondered if Loyal parents had died and Thomas and Lucy had raised him giving him their name.I would be so greatful for any information.Gwen Kirkby Jeff.co.N.Y.

He was the son of
William and Sarah Mahar of Woodville. Alice Jane's sister married Thomas Mahar, a brother of Andrew. The names of ALice Jane's 6 children and Martha's 3 children are mentioned.
Alice and Martha are daughter of Joshua Sanford and Elizabeth Weaver.

Richard
There are a number of books that have been published on the Sanford name. Here are a few:

SANFORD: Sanford Genealogy. The Branches of William of Madison, N. Y. of the Sixth American Generation ; Sanford, Heman Howes; Syracuse, NY; 1894; Pages: 73

SANFORD: Thomas Sanford, The Emigrant to New England ; Sanford, Carlton; Potsdam, NY; 1911; Pages: 1767

SANFORD: President John Sanford of Boston, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, Rhode Island…. ; Sanford, Jack M.; Rutland, VT; 1966; Pages: 420

Do you know which one has the reference you are referring to? If so, I can probably find it for you at a nearby library which has a good genealogy section.

Send me your email address, so I can send the page to you if I find it.

Ken Sanford - kaerophil@gmail.com

Yes I live in jeff.co. LaFargeville ,it is a small village.I have always lived in this area and all of my siblings also live in jeff.co.I live about ten miles from where loyal and sarah lived.Loyal and Sarah are buried in Dexter cemetery.right next to Sarah parents Ebenezer and Phebe Phelps.I visit their graves every spring and summer.I'm hoping that you find that he is the son of Thomas and Lucy,if not I will have a lot of work ahead trying to find his family.Thomas is buried in Lyme which is just a few miles from Dexter.Yes a few pages from the front, it starts with the book of Genesis chapter one.I think it is a catholic bible,it refers to blessed virgin Mary.

Something I forgot to ask, was there any missing pages?

My thinking, after after looking at some of the census,
Loyal's father may have been Henry. I have thought over the years, that Henry was a son of Thomas of Weyebridge, since they tranacted a lot of land deals together.

Will start working on Henry & see what I can find.
Do live any where close to Jefferson Co., NY?

I got the bible out to check, the handwriting is the same for Loyal and his family.I believe it was written at different times. It starts with Loyal and Sarah, that appears to be at the same time. The first six children seem to be written at another time, then we have one at another time, then six more that are at another time, then the last three. The reason I believe that they are written at different times is heaviness of the ink,the ink is the same also the handwriting is the same. When my great grandfather obtained the bible someone had written in Sarah date of death as year 1887 December 17, Loyal is written in a red ink,it read died march 13,1890 age77years 2month and 13days.My g-grandfather wrote his ,my g-grandmothers and their first child date of birth the next five children are written by another hand. The dates of marriages of his children and their spouse is also recorded. When George passed away my g-uncle William(Will) got the bible. Before he died he gave it to my aunt and before she passed away she gave it to me,like I said it is real treasure to me.I almost forgot to mention that the death dates for two of G-George daughters is also recorded. My uncle had recorded his 1st wife death.I would say the recording starts about 1834 ends aug. 27,1941.

Hi Ed,
If you have not tried this, go to and click on the RHayes (in this section) 'posting', click on his Angelfire site link, click on "S" in the "Family" section. There are about 1,000 Sanford people in his tree and some in New York. Otherwise, try your own hunches and check anything you 'feel' might give you clues. Census records/war records, etc. I just began by digging with only two names for one side of my family. I could not believe where my family was actually from and how many relatives I had that were unknown to me.You could be of the Richard rather than Thomas line. Some children were also reared by others.Good Luck!
Ley Sanford Knight

I also saw that reference. I thought it was interesting to follow up on. Reason being, Byington was Robert Sanfords' wifes maiden name. Also a Henry was involved in land transaction back in Addison county. I never was able to determine if he was a son of Thomas of Weyebridge or a nephew.
No documented proof he was born there. Will try to find the census record again.
Could you send me what you have on Loyal and his family? The records say that Henry Sanford and Polly Byangton are his parents.I am hoping this was an error.Loyal had a son named henry that was in the civil war, I don't know who he married.Do you have any records that prove loyal was born in Elizabethtown,Ontario

Black with the Surname Sanford

www.csanford.com/Genealogy/BlackSanfords.html

This is an interesting article about Blacks with the surname Sanford. From my ancestry search, I have reasons to believe that my great-grand father (Judge Sanford) and whom I believe were his parents (James and Permelia Sanford) were on this plantation. James and Permelia did not leave the Milledgeville area. They were listed on the 1870 census, ages 78 and 76, respectively, with no one else listed in the household. Judge first appeared in the Evergreen area in 1866 shortly after emancipation and on the 1870 census. His records states that he was born in GA, and parents from Virginia and Maryland. James and Permelia were from Virginia and Maryland, respectively. Prior to 1919, all death records in the State of Georgia burned in a fire; thus, no records of their death. Other records in probate court still might exist. I have no knowledge whether or not if Judge had siblings. Please pass along to me any information you might have concerning Judge, James or Permelia Sanford, or Blacks and the Sanford plantation(s) in GA.

Does the book make a definite connection between the Sanford family of Connecticutt and the Sanford family of Tennessee? I would really like to have some sort of artifact to connect the two if there is one.

Mary

I have noticed on several public trees that many people have made a link between the James Sanford of Arrington, Williamson, Tennessee, and the Sanfords of Redding, Fairfield, Connecticut. Is there any real evidence that these two Sanford families are connected. I had them connected on my tree until I noticed that I could not find any artifacts to support the connection. If you have any evidence please pass it on.

Mary

I have always thought that Loyal's parents had died and Thomas and Lucy took him in and raised him as their own, giving them the sanford name.I and many of Loyal descendants still live in jeff.co. There was teacher at Jefferson community college, that thought local history. One of his topic was local native american families, Sanford's was one of them.I found out his name and called, only to find out he had passed away the day before.I was hoping he could tell me where he had gotten his information. You said you have the information from the bible,do you mean Loyal's or Thomas.I do not have the will data,I would like it if you would share thanks Gwen
