Hi Chris,
Capt. Manuel F. Santos was my great grandfather. He was also capt of the Whaling ship "John R Manta". My grandmother Louise Santos was one of his daughters and came to New Bedford from the Azores after her father. She married John Birch. I believe her sisters were named Kathleen, Mary and Carolyn. If my memory is correct her brother died at sea also on a whaler shortly before capt. Manuel Santos was lost at sea. My grandmother passed away in 1969. I'd love to know what information you have and why you are researching capt. Santos. I am also trying to find out what Island they came from. My father thinks it was Corvo, do you have any info.

Hello. I found this posting and it caught my eye. My grandfather is Francisco Guerrero Santos, born in Guam and later moved to New Jersey. My father is his son, Frank Santos, born in New Jersey. My grandfather was married to my grandmother Anna when he passed away when my father was only 2 years old. My dad also has a brother Angelo Santos, both are the sons of Francisco Guerrero Santos. If you are related to us -- it would be nice to know you. I showed this posting to my dad and this is definitely our family. Rosa was my grandfather's mom. Many years ago we met Aunt Julie Sablond. Each year we've corresponded with Grandpa Francisco's only brother, Joaquin. Joaquin recently passed away at the age of 92. Hopefully this response finds someone. It's already 11 years old. Thank you.

Regards,
Deanna Santos
Daughter of Frank Santos (son to Francisco Guerrero Santos)

Re: Gabriel SANTOS of Cambridge, Somerville, MA, 1900's

Hello,

I haven't done any looking for information on this family for a few years. But I started looking again. I decided to try to find the marriage record for Gabriel SANTOS and "Bella" SOUZA, and I lucked out. They married in Somerville, MA, US, in 1936. And it says that they were both born on Madeira Island.

And I now have their parents' names:

Jose and Maria R. (VIERA) SANTOS
Joseph S. and Mary F. (CABRAL) SOUZA

I don't know any more about the parents.

I also found the death record for Gabriel Faustino SANTOS. He lived to Age 90 and died in 1988 in Somerville, MA (US). That makes his birth-year in 1898 on Madeira Island. The family believes he arrived in Massachusetts around Age 20, so that would have been around 1918.

I do not know the age of Mrs. "Bella" SANTOS, but I found out her full name was Mary Bella SOUZA when born. And, I can guess she was born between 1900 and 1910. It is somewhat surprising that Gabriel and Bella were in their late 30's when they married (1st marriage for both). The family believes that Bella arrived in Massachusetts as a baby with her parents. And she had a sister, Ann SOUZA. So, I can only guess they were born between 1900 and 1910, and arrived around that time. The family tells me that, after Bella lost her husband in 1988, she soon moved to the Fall River or New Bedford, MA, area with a friend. And that is where she probably died, probably during the 1990's.

I did find out that Gabriel SANTOS had relatives in Lowell, MA, with the name QUINTAL.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

P.S. Gabriel's death record said his mother's maiden name was Maria ROSA.

Hi,

Thank you for your question. The Joseph Santos in our family, b.1905, did not have an older brother. Two younger brothers, Frank and Manuel. There were more children who died whose names we did not know, but they did not live to adulthood. This Joseph Santos had a grandfather with the same name (Joseph Santos), but we do not know the year of his birth or death, and he never left the Azores according to our records. Joe's grandfather, Joseph Santos, was married to Francisco Medeiros Valero.

Laurie Santos Weber
Gilroy, CA

Might have gone to PA then Rhode Island and finally New London CT. I knowt hat for what ever reason he retured to Maderia around 1923 and ship records show that his wife returned in Aug 1923 as a widow. She later died in CT 1927.
Her parents Geroma(Jeremiah) Miranda and Constantina DSilva dided in CT as well. Any info for either of these families would be appreaciated.

My branch of the Santos Family arrived on a ship at the Port of Providence, Rhode Island, on May 3, 1913: Manuel, Isabel and their nine children. (My grandfather, Manuel, was one of the nine.)

My grandfathers brothers were: Frank and Joseph, but no mention of a brother name Antone. (Could Antone have died early?) There were a bunch of sisters, one was a Mary, but no Carolines.

That's a lot of coincidences, but those were very popular portuguese names.

Laurie Santos

Sinc your grandparents came from the Canary Islands, that mean that they are decendants of one of the four Santos brothers that left Spain. I was told that of the four brothers, one went to the Canary Islands, One went to North America, one went to Mexico, and one went to the Philipines. But I would like more information. My grandfather Daniel Santos who married my grandmother Dominga Vasquez from Aguas Buenas. My father was Miguel Angel Santos Vasquez who married my mother Mildred Monserrate Rivera born in Yauco and raised in Ponce. My dad died in 1974 and my mother in 1977. I started searching my roots around 2001 so I missed out on a lot of information. My grandfather on my mother's side was Taino. The best thing you could do while you are still blessed to have your parents, is to pick their brains and let them tell you all they know about our ancestors. If you don't mind passiing on the wealth of information from your parents, I would greatly apreciate it. If I get any information, I will pass it on to you. My email (for family only), is aonribo@yahoo.com Pleas feel free to keep in touch. God bless our families!
