"You have to assume it is correct unless you can prove otherwise."

add: It remains an assumption, not a proof.

But we're evaluating the validity of both candidates. Antonio Langlais gave no explanation on why he chose one over the other, as he thought he was one in the same. Unless you count the name-transition-theory. But he can't be, as you perfectly pointed out: the attack on the Digory household was posterior to the 1700 baptism.

The Barbados may sound a bit far-fetched, but that's what that record says. It doesn't make him *much* less of a candidate. Barbados in those years was (generally) run by the same English port merchant families as colonial NE. Not so far fetched if from Penny's master seamen people. If he was born in Barbados circa 1684 and brought back, say at 3, at the Bay colony, it is plausible he'd remember Barbados at age 16, but forget it by 34 at his wedding (he had to one to hear the family tales from). I've seen similar cases elsewhere, not that uncommon. Sometimes it can be caused by a general question by the writer; the priest (or notary in this case) may ask «where are you from?», but write it down as «native of xyz». So the boy could conceivably be «from Fort Pemaquid», but «born in Barbados».
If the DNA evidence is confirmed, we will still need to find documented proof to that suposed Barbados episode, and document who Louis' father really was.

"All Drouin records in Riviere Ouelle pertain to Louis Phillipe aka Daniel Sargent."

Wrong, they pertain to Louis Langlais. Once, at his marriage he is called Louis Philippe no surname. Otherwise while living, he is called Louis l'anglais. SARGENT and DANIEL are Never used in Rivière-Ouelle.

"they might have omitted "feu" but I don't think that one can assume he is still alive."

The onus is on the other side. You can't assume a mistake because it doesn't fit the purpose. You have to assume it is correct unless you can prove otherwise.

"he did not produce anymore children after 1723 being only 24 years old"

It if is the 1700 Louis Philippe, then is already 39 [crtd] by 1723....

About the Jetté reference in the earlier message, he was involved in the Société that published the article, so he was surely aware of it.

The Anglais DE (not dit) nation is referenced in both boy's baptism, it just means englishmen.

Those "dit" name are most often imposed on people by usage in the area, not usually attributed to one's self. Dit meaning "called" implies normally by others.

"Sérien" is phonetically exactly same as "Sait rien" in québécois accent.

The type of syntaxic transformation proposed for Sargent - Sarjent - Sarient is more akin to a Old English/French - Middle E/F - Modern E/F transition, which takes place over a millenia, ... not in 40 years ... even less while it is not being put on paper anywhere.

The "sait-rien" explanation is much less of a stretch than the syntaxic one, by far. But this is not really the central issue since we believe both boys were born Sargents anyway.

The only location we have for the Daniel/Louis Philippe Sargent anglais de nation s/o Digory is Montreal, 250km (180 miles) further from Rivière-Ouelle than Lauzon where the other one is baptised, at a more appropriate date.

There is no doubt the Montreal Louis Philippe is born Daniel Sargent s/o Digory as his baptism states. And that he is the same as the Louis Philippe Sergent naturalised three years later.

The Antonio Langlais article also implies it is the same boy baptsed in 1700 and 1707 (despite their 15 year difference in age), and attributes the Barbados reference as a mistake by archivist Pierre-Georges Roy. M. Antonio did not read the records in question. He read the Campey book, and maybe the 1707 baptism.

The Corrections to the Jetté dictionary is not done by the late man, but by Denis Beauregard, who compiles other's published or supplied work, but does little critical source analysis in those cases. Nor does he have Jetté's reputation. He simply picked up the study that Jetté carefully avoided.

Others authors picked up the ball from there, but no one stopped to address the issues that DNA raised.
Nothing is impossible and Daniel Sargent might have inherited suddenly in one single genetic event (his conception) rare mutations on two different stable alleles. But the fact we can find such inconsistencies in the original article's theory that remained unchallenged should prepare us for the inevitable... There is a lot of personal storytelling by the author on how he came about this assumptions he states as fact, but it remains thin on incontestable documented proof...

Lt John Sargent, of Fort Pemaquid was believed to be the son of Steph Sargent of Richmond Island Maine, and also who drowned @ Isle of Shoals,Maine or NH in 1649. He is never heard from again and his estate was inventoried by several well known Boston, businessman. They some way tie into the Sargent Estate as Creditors. According to Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & NH:

7 STEPHEN, Mr., fishing master, Richmond
Isl., came in the -Fortune- bef. 11 June
1638. About 2 Aug. 1641 he took the
ship -Richmond-, built here, to Eng. THO. SERGEANT ......23 years.
6 April, 1635.

(Capt is Also listed as Capt James Harmon..is this a coincidence that a Capt James Harmon piloted the Fortune in 1632 that Mr Stephen Sargent arrived in?)
Also listed in Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1538-1940

Sergeant, Steph	Place : New England(believe this was Stephen of Isle of Shoals and Richmond Island, Maine.)
Year : 1620-1650
Primary Individual : Sergeant, Steph(note by Me, Penny Kresl..I think this should read Stephen) Stephen of Maine, was indeed from Plymouth, Co Devon. )
Source Code : 977
Source Name : BROWN, R.D. John a supposed son was an early settler of Saco, Maine was a Lietuenant in 1680 and was a representative to the General Court in 1684 held by Thomas Danforth Deputy Gov 1679 1686 and appointed President in 1680 for Maine Savage History of NE There are no further records of this branch "
Taken from an excerpt of Trelawney Papers, Documentary History of the State of Maine, Volume 3
By Maine Historical Society
A Foot note on Mr. Stephen Sargent of Plymouth, Co, Devon, England

Stephen Sargent Like most of Winter's men he remained in the country He appears to have been a man of some what higher social standing than others of the colony at the Island as he had two servants in his employ and Winter in one of his letters home speaks as though more was expected of him than of others. It is quite probable that he lived at Saco till about 1670 and that Edward and John were his sons. We find him serving on a jury of inquest on the 22d of December 1670 at Saco If he is the Stephen mentioned by Savage as living in Boston in 1670 he must have removed thither and had several children born to him between that date and 1677 when we lose sight of him Vide Early Records of Maine State copy Vol III p 436 Savage's Genealogical Dictionary Vol IV p 18 Folsom's Saco p 179

(My research has found that the First Stephen Sargent & master Fisherman, probably born abt 1605-1608 in Devon, England was the gfather of the second Stephen mentioned in 1677, the First Stephen Sargent apparently drowned at the Shoals in or abt 1649, where his Fishing wharf and Platform and business was inventoried by the people above.
(John Monke, Antipas Maverick and Richard Cummings @ Boston, MA in 1649)

There was a Stephen Sargent born abt 1605 in St Neot, in Cornwall, England abt 15 miles from Plymouth, that looks like he could possibly be the Same one we are looking for, it's hard to say. Parish Records prove this. This is close in proximity to St Neot, Cornwall. I do feel there is a genetic link to the Sargent families in Cornwall.. Need further DNA testing. Need further testing on the males to prove this. Although it is in theory only..no proof.
There are no other Langlais/Seriens in Riviere Ouelle during this period. All Drouin records in Riviere Ouelle pertain to Louis Phillipe aka Daniel Sargent. In 1750 for Fancois' marriage, they list Louis Serien Langlais de nation as feu. I don't have the record for Marguerite's marriage in 1736 so I don't know why at this point if or why they might have omitted "feu" but I don't think that one can assume he is still alive. I would rather assume he died in 1728 due to the fact he did not produce anymore children after 1723 being only 24 years old (marguerite Lavoie being 30 in 1723). There was no birth control in this period and never allowed by the catholic church even if it did exist. No way that Louis Philippe lived past 1728. The Barbados scenarios is so much more far fetched for that period.

The two alleles (on the 12 marker panel) that are different on the Digory line and the John s/o Stephen line are two slow markers. if it was just one or two faster markers I might consider convergence, but that seems unlikely.

In principal, the two captive Louis Philippe, one being Sargent (1707), english of nation, are equal candidates for the Louis Philippe Langlais dit Sérien.

The 1700 Louis Philippe has two thing weighing in its favor, IMO.
- His age;
- Preliminary DNA, which will be cleared up in a few weeks.

At the marriage of his daughter Marguerite in 1736, there is no «late/feu» mention to the father «Louis Langlais», and must be assumed still alive, even if he doesn't attend the ceremony. Daniel Sergent died before Aug. 3, 1728 when his brother Thomas handles his Worcester estate (Woods 1904).

I don't know about René Jetté's assumptions but here are my facts.

1707 baptism has Daniel Sargent son of Digory becoming Louis Philippe. In the column is "Daniel "Dicker" Sergeant Angloif (Anglais) in Montreal.

1718 Louis Philippe Anglais dit nation marries Margueritte Lavoye in Riviere-Ouelle. This Anglais dit Nation is the same reference in his son's marriage record. Son being Francois Serien. I don't think anyone would call their son "Francois Know's Nothing" when their own referenced last name is "Anglais dit Nation".

The conspiracy that Serien is an amalgamation of "sait rien" is like the claims in Dan Brown's book "The Davinci code" the Holy Grail being bloodline or Sangreal because Sang Real translates to Holy Dish.

Even Mr Jette can be wrong and relying soley on his publishing can be tragic.

The following from http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/QUEBEC/2002-01...

"> In 1976 and in 1977, the "Mémoires de la Société généalogique
> canadienne-française" (vol. Nothing links them directly, no more than with the 1700 baptism.

At his wedding, his first mention linking him with his new family, there is only his first names, no surname (or moniker/dit name). Names can change, but there is no obvious reason to drop surname completely as he does in 1718.

I have just finished reviewing some Drouin records because I think you may be judging only a few documents and not all of the facts that pieced together give a better picture. I don't think Daniel aka Louis Philippe ever forgets his name as you say. In that period, some names are adapted based on other's perception of you. Also other trens happen such as why the Serien eventually is dropped by almost every line within a 10-20 year period. This similar occurence happened with other family's such has Hudon dit Beaulieu. Most became just Beaulieu. I'm not an expert on Quebec/Canada history or why this phenomena happened but it wasn't due to people forgetting their names. Probably just made life easier with the increase in the amount of written documentation for common people.

(1750) Louis Philippe (Daniel Sargent) is refered to in his only son's marriage record as "Louis Serien anglais de nation" with wife Marguerite Lavoie. The son being Francois Serien who married Marie Joseph Hudon Beaulieu. (1797) When Francois died at age 77, he is listed as Francois Serien dit Langlais in his burial record.

(1808) Francois' older sister Marguerite is listed as Serien dite Langlais in her burial record. States she is the widow of Jean baptiste Gagnon.

(1742) When his youngest daughter married Joseph Hudon, parents are listed Louis L'anglais and and Marguerite Lavoye. Bride being listed as Marguerite L'anglais.

Again, what is this baptism in 1700? The attack of Digory Sargent didn't happen until 1703/1704 so I don't know how a 1700 baptism in Canada by Father Bigot has anything to do with Digory or Daniel.

I'm all for finding the truth but don't see your conclusions being valid. As for DNA, I think there needs to be more testing before any conclusions can be made. I am hopeful for another Langlais to be tested in the near future.

The only thing that links the Canadian Langlais dit Serien with Digory's Sargents is the assumption that the 1707 baptism is the right one. The theory was published in 1976 & 1977, yet René Jetté stayed cleared from calling his father Digory. He associates the 1700 baptism (correctly, IMO) with him, but errs in associating the 1710 naturalisation.

The argument of the Sargent becoming Serien by written transformation, implies the name was written/transcribed (and not heard?) throughout the transformation. But there are no written mention of either names, between the last Sargent mention (1710 nat.) and the first mention of Serien in the early 1750s.

The 12-marker DNA evidence points to a different SARGENT line than the Digory one. We've just ordered to 67 markers to lift any lingering doubt o that point. It is pure coincidence that Louis Philippe Langlais turns out to be a SARGENT anyway, as the evidence suggests.

P. 34 of the Ancestry microfilm for Lauzon (St-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-Levy) in the Drouin Collection.

If the 1707 boy is married to Lavoie, then:
- Why, when he remembers his surname and father in 1707, and still his surname in 1710, does he suddently forget it before 1718?
- Why, as a minor at 19 year-old, is there no mention that he is indeed a minor, in an otherwise detailed record... 6 years younger than his bride?
- Why would a boy baptised, and presumedly raised in Montreal, would head to the lower St.Laurent in Rivière-Ouelle, et region mostly populated by folks from Quebec City, Ile d'Orleans and the Cote-Sud?

The first time the Sargent name is associated with the Langlais dit Sérien is with the 1976 article, not in period documents. Sérien - an amalgamation of "sait rien", or knows nothing - only appears posthumously when his sons marry. Because he never knew his last name (like the 1700 boy), earning him the L'anglais and Sérien monikers. In the 1700 baptism, it says "un anglais aagé denrivon 16 ans natif d la barbade et racheptee des abenakis quitanoieni pusenguone, il a ete nomme Philippe".
or
"an english boy of about 16, native of Barbados, bought back from the Abenaki (tribe) Quitanoieni Pusenguone (? where? there is a Ketan... something in Maine that could be close), was named Philippe.
In the margin, it was added "esclave" or "slave".

Father Bigot often mentioned in Campey's Captives would get the Abenaki to sell their slaves in Quebec where they would eventually regain their freedom. He appears to have stayed a slave quite a while, as he only marries at 34. if this is our Langlais.

What is this 1700 baptism record of a 16 year old you are refering to? Why would you doubt the Nov 6, 1707 record of Louis Philippe which clearly states he was Daniel, son of Digory and later states Daniel Sargent born August 1699? This is the person who married Marguerite Lavoie.

What info do you have about 2 english boy captives named Louis Philippe? This whole Barbados thing has me a bit befuddled. Please point me to more records on this if you could.

Dwayne

"There have been several sources to prove Louis Philipe is Daniel Sargent son of Digory Sargent. Not many people will deny that now. Penny's Dilema is whether her Thomas Sargent is related to Digory line."

The problem is there a two english boy captives named Louis Philippe - both SARGENT by birth - that end up in Quebec. Itiis very clear the son of Digory is one of them as he states himself, in 1707. He still calls himself «Louis Philippe Sargent» at his 1710 naturalisation.

But I now believe Digory's son is NOT the one who later married Marguerite LAVOIE, the ancestors to Quebec's LANGLAIS dit SERIEN.

We are left with the Louis Philippe, who doesn't know his surname, at age 16, in 1700 at his baptism by father Bigot, stated as being born in the Barbados, and taken and enslaved by the Quitanoueini (!?!) Abenakis. Later on, if the same one, he states being born on the Boston (mass) coasts, which then included Maine.

The LANGLAIS tested (12 markers, we are upgrading now) matching perfectly Penny's Thomas SARGENT line of Pemaquid, but not Digory's line. The Pemaguid attack of 1690 is the likely culprit. So Daniel dit Louis Philippe SARGENT is not LANGLAIS nor SERIEN.

Now we need to find a Barbados SARGENT family with links with Maine/Mass and to the Maine Sargents.
What year does John arrive in Saco?
If he is the father of Pemaquid Thomas, and thus related to the Canadian Langlais as the DNA points to, then maybe John was the son of John arriving from Bridgetown Barbados (Jr & Sr. at the 1608 Bridgetown census as slave owners. Since Louis Langlais is not the son of Digory (1707 baptism), he is likely the Louis Philippe baptised in 1700, «english of nation native of Barbados», but later referring to Mass' coasts (Maine still in the province of Mass then) at his marriage with «coasts of Boston».

Unless the William Sargent of Bath /Barbados / Boston is also closely related somehow.

It would be ironic that a plantation slave owner's son ended up as slave to the Abenaki.

I would begin with census records...from 1850 on. And vital records can be helpful. If you have an idea they were there earlier ship manifests can give clues. Have you read any historical accounts of Ellsworth to get a timeline of its history? Sargents settled in Ma and some did move into Maine...some along the NH border. Keep in touch.

Hey! I was just searching for Sargents in Wisconsin, and we are definitely related. I have the Sawdust book! Each year there is a Sargent Christmas party. My grandmother's father was named Leonard Sargent (Born in early 1900-1920) and was named after his grandfather Leonard Sargent!

How crazy!

If you have any additional lineage information beyond The VT family, please email me at Kuehljac@uwec.edu and we can exchange information.

Hope to hear from you.

Jeffrey,

Thank you for your nice reply. Thank you for posting the info about Delight's burial place.

I was planning a trip to New England for September 2010 and wanted to be able to visit Delight Sargent Boudinot's grave. I did find that information before leaving. I did visit the cemetery, but forgot to bring the map I received from the cemetery! :( I was in the wrong section, it was an hour before closing and it was getting dark. But, I am planning another trip and will be sure to take my map with me!

The cemetery is very large with over 65,000 graves.

Thank you.

Helen,

My name is Jeff Sargent and I live in the heart of The Creek Nation in Oklahoma. Below my wordsmithing is the location where Delight Sargent Boudinot is buried.
I am of mixed blood and 2/3 white, but am Cherokee from my mother, and my father's people are from The White Earth Clan of the Ojibway, or Chippewa. I have the information you seek, and it is below. I have studied our people for many years and lived and learned "the way of our people," and must say that the part of history and the tragic end of your 4th Great Grandfather was indeed that, a tragedy. When studying the subject when I was much younger, it all seemed so cruel and it was indeed venom, and no one at the time knew of what would or could happen at the hands of, nor the pen of Andrew Jackson and his "white treaty breaking killing machine."
The Cherokee people were divided by many events that they did not anticipate, nor did any of the many tribes fully comprehend until it was too late. Many were literally wiped off the face of the earth because of greed and broken treaties, which both outnumbered anything a group of innocent people who were trodden over, murdered and removed to reservations or Indian Territory by force could fully comprehend as a group. In the case of Elias, he was a "forward thinker," and a visionary that discerned what lay ahead for his and other people at the hands of the whites and the society at large during that period in time. He understood the events that were taking place and also tried to protect his people, and as you know there were different opinions and a wide canyon of divide created by bad deeds and mistrust, and a rift became a tribal war that lasted for many years, and some went with the Union forces, and others fought on the other side. We were a nation divided, and not all wanted to be on the side of the North or South, nor did all agree with the viewpoints of the US or Confederate governments, but the past is past, but not forgotten, and the Cherokee are a strong people, now located all over the US and abroad. None of the Cherokee wished to leave the land and lives they had evolved into and the society they had become accustomed to or been assimilated into. As you know, money is flowing back into the Cherokee Nations, and new industries have been created that are ongoing and successful. It makes me proud to know that the present is full of hope, even though there are still political divides among the Cherokee people, however there are also divides and boundaries for freedom that are lurking in the shadows and in front of our faces all over the world. What I do know is that God has a plan for all of us, and we cannot understand nor comprehend the magnitude of everything that our Father has in mind for us and our world, but His will is carried out in every segment of our lives, and He gives us each breath that we take, and each day is truly a gift from God, and it is such a short time we have here on this beautiful earth; it is a shame that we waste so much time and energy on trivialities and injustices to our fellow human beings, when we should all be joining together to help save the planet at this juncture in time, as there will come a day of judgement, and it may not be what or when we desire it in our selfish lives, but when you compare our short time here on this beautiful earth to eternity, we should all be thankful that we still have a chance to enjoin together to save our heritage, and help each other band together for whatever is needed to save up our energy for the positive here and now, as we'll not have time once the "sands of our hourglass" have dipped to the bottom. You may be a cousin or family member, and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, 2011 -
Helen Currie Davis; I see you wrote this request for information a year and five months ago and hope this helps you in your quest.
With peace, love and joy,
Jeffrey Nofire Sargent, a fellow human being
Wolf ClanA NI WA YAH

I
1893 February 21 – Obit: BOUDINOTT-At the Presbyterian Home, Feb 21, 1893, Delight S. Boudinott, aged 92 years. Funeral from the Home, 90 Fourth Street, Wednesday, 22nd inst., at 2 p.m. Friends are invited to attend.

Delight is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, USA, Section H, Lot # 406, Grave # 3.
Charles C. Sargent - Info on First Wife (Belle)?

I am currently looking for any information regarding the first wife of Charles C. Sargent. Her name was Belle Medicine Walk (b. 1862, North Dakota).

Charles C. Sargent (01/21/1846-04/17/1926) was a Civil War veteran (Union) and subsequent Indian scout who ended up founding Nashua, Montana.

Belle Medicine Walk was a full-blooded Assiniboine Indian. I am particularly interested in information about her preceding ancestors, namely her parents and grandparents.

Any information anyone can provide on Charles C. Sargent or his first wife Belle would be greatly appreciated!
Hello, I am a collector of antique & rare books, and your post caught my attention because I do have a book written by Epes Sargent! The book is entitled "The Life And Public Service Of Henry Clay", 1852, publisher Porter and Coates of Philadelphia, PA, edited and completed upon Mr. Clay's death by Horace Greeley. This is very interesting reading and in good condition for a book that is 159 years old!

John Milton Sargent + Elizabeth Huntington - Weare, New Hampshire

Complete longshot, but i'm hoping someone has information regarding John Milton Sargent. I'm unable to find his marriage license to Elizabeth Huntington or their 1850 census.

The information i do have:

Elizabeth Huntington was born 1813 in Weare, New Hampshire to Abner Huntington and Deborah Boynton. I found her and her children on the 1860 census, but by that time John had died. He fell from a neighbor's roof in 1853.

Children of John + Elizabeth:

Maria born January 26, 1842
Ann Maranda born September 20, 1844 m Hiram Gilman 1875
john Milton Jr born October 21, 1847 m Etta Fish 1867
Frank B P born 1849? It's telling that i can't locate Frank's birth. That may be a hint that they weren't even in New Hampshire during that time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Diane, firstly I must apologise profusely for not replying to your message until now - I have just been going through bits and pieces I have for the Sargents and have just come across your message.

Sadly, although Nuneaton is the right area, unfortunately the names don't match. On the 1851 census (which is all I have to go on !) Thomas was 49, his wife Elizabeth was 45 and the 4 children still at home were Nancy 15, Thomas 10, William 7 and Mary 5. Thomas at that time was a coal miner in Sowe. His eldest daughter Hannah left home and married Richard Ball in 1850. She was born in approx 1830/31.

With kind regards
Yvonne
