I have a lot of the Walker, Howard, Dyer, Isbel history in my SATER archive. I don't recall that trip south with the minister, though it could have happened and I would like to read more...Henry wanted the word of God spread and was a avid Baptist. Send me an email DSater@aol.com I will exchange all I have with you.

DNA testing has shown that Benjamin Howard is a descendent of Mathew Howard. I have read that when Prudence Sater's father died his mother remarried to a John Howard. I believe there was a John Howard on Chestnut Ridge close to where Prudence was born. Though I cannot find John, there was a Howard family that owned the Chestnut Ridge property who seemed to be descended from Lemuel who is supposed to be a brother of Gideon who is also in this DNA group. Interestingly, Benjamin Howard is shown as being born at Long Island, Maryland and I recently found a connection to a Long Island (land grant) and Chestnut Ridge. Does anybody have any further info on this region or this family?

The Hugh Sater I'm looking for was the son of Abijah T. and Mary E. "Millie" Sater. Hugh's wife was Mary F. "Mamie" Price--not Millie. Hugh may also have been called Elihujh. He married Mamie Dec. 23, 1900, in Reidsville, NC. Hugh was a housepainter. They moved near Richmond, VA soon thereafter. They were divorced in Richmond in 1912.

Henry Sater's daughter Prudence Sater m: Benjamin Howard about 1750

Discretion Howard (born 1764; daughter of Benjamin Howard and Prudence Sater of Maryland & VA) married Thomas Isbell (son of James Isbell & Frances Livingston of the Orange Co VA Henry Isbell line).

I would like to learn more about the Henry Sater and Howard families early days at Chestnut Ridge at Lutherville, Maryland (outside Baltimore) and also after they moved from there in 1743 to the Opecken or Obequon Creek / Mill Creek area of the upper Shenandoah Valley in Old Frederick Co VA (later Berkeley Co WV). It seems that Edmund Hayes, John Hayes and Thomas Yates were Baptist evangelists in Maryland who brought a colony of 15 families to northwestern Virginia, with the Saters and Howards among them. It appears that some of the Isbells also may have come with this group? I'd love to know more about this story.

I have ancestors from these Howards, Hayes and Yates, as well as from Coxes that married into these Isbells, Dyers who married into these Howards, and others. Additional surnames with connections include Stearns / Starnes, Crabtree, Thompson, Stevenson, Wheat, DeMoss, Evans, Van Meter, Hart, McCoy, Eads, Ballinger, Billingsley, Mason.
My interest is because my grandmother married Flora's brother Hugh who was a housepainter. They had no children and divorced about 1912 in Virginia.
I have some information on Flora MacDonald Sater and her descendants. She was born 25 Sep 1891 in Raleigh, NC, and died 17 Sept. 1935 in Rocky Mt, NC. She married 8 Jul 1909 John Wesley Hollowell (son of W.G. Hollowell and Caroline Gardner Bryan of Goldsboro.) Had 8 children. John worked for the RR. They appear on the 1910 census in Edgecombe, Rocky Mt, Branch St. as a young couple with no children and he is a flagman for the RR.

Hope this helps someone.

Henry and his family are recognized in several books, but I've never seen any portraits of him or his descendants. I'v recently been collecting photos for a family tree scrapbook. Does anyone know if there are any illustrations or anything? I have photos of the Sater Baptist Church and historical markers but that is all. I descend from Henry, his son John, his son Henry, and his daughter Nancy Sater Martin. They went from MD to NC to Ky and MO and KS.

I read somewhere that when they left KY they went to Illinois for a while before going to Mo. Does anyone have any info on that? That would have been between 1840 and 1842. That is also the time period that Nancy Sater married Caswell Martin and I'm trying to pinpoint where they met and married. They were married with one son in July of 1842 in Dade County, Mo.

Thanks for any help!!
Lisa

1860 Des Moines County SATER census mystery: NC, KY, IA families

I'm looking for help solving the mystery of Michael SATER's listing in the 1860 Des Moines County, IA, census. There's no relationship information in this census, which is exactly what I'm seeking.

Here's the record:

Elizabeth SATER 65 NC
Mary E. 17 IA
Cynthia A. JONES 16 IA
Charles H. SATER 2 IA
Michael SATER 30 KY

According to Michael SATER's Civil War pension papers, he divorced a Mary E. and married a Cynthia A. JONES in 1868. If I'm guessing right, here he's listed as living in the same household as both of them! I hadn't heard about Charles SATER before, but I'd guess he's Mary E. and Michael's son.

The true mystery, though, is who Elizabeth SATER is. From census records of Michael's brother John, I thought that Michael and John's father was born in Maryland and their mother was born in Pennsylvania. However, here we have an Elizabeth from North Carolina. Do any SATER genealogists know her background? I have yet to link Michael, John, and their sister, Sarah SATER to the Henry SATER line that came out of Baltimore, MD, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sater, born around 1830 in Kentucky. Michael was married to Sintha Ann Sater, who lived her whole life in Iowa, 1841-1923. They had four kids: Elijah, Joseph, Birdie, and Lucinda. I also think Michael and John had a sister. Let me know if you have any ideas for how these SATERs connect to the rest of the tree.

Thanks!

I would like to contact Kurt. Do you have an email address?

I'm familiar with the English Sater line. The Norwegian line would probably not have the name Sater in Norway and not all branches will have this name. My limited understanding of Norwegian translates Sater as Dairy or Dairyman. It is also a farm name, basically a dairy farm. My belief is that this particular line of Sater had a last name that began with H. since this was the middle initial listed for Albert Sater.

In reference to your posting as to where
Nancy Sater is buried, perhaps she is in an
unmarked grave on the Richtenburg farm in
Warren County, MO.
Don,
I have been working on this for over 28 years with no where near that number, I'm sure, but I have never counted. As I probably have said, it was mostly by U. S. Mail. I have been to the Hall of Records, Libraries in Richmond, some smaller ones in Va., Md. , N. J. where I live, but mostly by mail. I thnk I have nearly every letter, and whatever, from everyone I have corresponded with in notebooks. This covers a variety of names. I have swapped with Bob Barnes on Md. a very good genealogist. I was partially responsable for his proving Charles Merryman m Mary (Hale) King. I have swapped with Denzil Mauldin who is very much into the Hale Families and many who are into various others of my surnames. I have not really taken a look at my Sater stuff but intend to in the next couple of days. I have wondered about the story of Towson deing from Germany. I have a Houk family which was also spelled Howk. One cousin used that saying he knew that wasn't correct as W was pronounced V in German which I knew. Could Towson be a corruption of Townsend or some other? I try to be wary of everything for some time before I finally accept it.

Ed: As I read your last reply, I broke out in a huge smile. Like you, I thought the computer would clear up and make it easier to plot the family genealogy. Boy, were we wrong. I have been collecting for years, have over 2,500 individuals with the Sater surname and all the connected descendants. I freely exchange what I have to anyone related and ask that they send their family tree to add to the database. I have also run across your many postings regarding Dorcas and the Gossage Ossage thing. One day someone or something will attempt to correct ALL the records and remove it. Till then, it will be an annoyance to those who know. I just found a reference to a Charles C. Sater in Ohio, that makes another name to add to the mystery of this Charles Sater that is my latest attempt to place him in the lineage.

I will see if I can scare up anything. I swapped letters, wrote newspaper genealogy columns, wen to some historical societies, subscribed toThe Genealogical Helper, etc. for 20 years or so. I bought a computer quite awhile ago, thinking it might help, only to find how much misinformation was in every line I looked at. One for instance is Dorcas "Ossage" Towson. Someone in the family, allegedly, said they thought she marred a man named Gossage which is now "Ossage" as some apparently thinks it was her middle name. I believe this was a corruption of Gorsuch. Dorcas m a John Howard. I believe I have reference of a deed with their names on it.
Ed: Thanks for the quick reply. Milford Sater was the one who got me started on genealogy. As an airline pilot he did get around the country and tried to pull it all together. Most of his records are in cardboard boxes of his daughter. His two boys contacted me a while back asking if I knew about the Sater family. They didn't know their sister had all the stuff stored in the attic. ha! What ever you dig up will be greatly appreciated. I've accumulated a vast database of Sater families and their descendants. The more info, the merrier.

I am afraid I have no direct family knowledge. My dad had some interest in genealogy but I doubt he even knew anything about Saters. I never heard him say anything. Most of what I have was obtained by trading mail with others. I will check to see if I can find anything in what I have. I traded letters for a time with Milford Sater who gave me most of what I have. This is in letters he wrote that I have in notebooks.

Ed since you are a descendant of George's do you have any family knowledge of what became of Georges son Charles from the time he became a ward of Joseph Sater and they went west to Ohio? Several people are trying to tie Charles Sater born 1844 from NC and settled in Missouri. I can't find any proof of his parents, George H. Sater, existance before 1850 in North Carolina. There is a William H Sater but the 1830 Census doesn't name the children.

My gr.gr.grandfather was Adonijah Sater and he had a brother Abijah and Elihu. Their father was Thomas D. Sater Both men were suspected to migrate to NC around 1800. Am willing to send all the information if you think it would be of value. They were all from Baltimore Maryland. Have been looking for any leads to this line for years.

I was sorry to hear
of his death, and when REgina died I did not
hear from your branch of the family. I hope
that now we are connected, we can continue
to exchange information. Warmest regards,
fifth cousin Donald Sater in Glendale, AZ
Sure, there were several SATER families. Bloomington area in Monroe county and Evansville in Vandenburg county of Indiana families migrated into Illinois. Send your family tree information and I'll see what I can send to you from the database.
