Lerah Franklin Saul was my mother's paternal grandmother. She married John Peter Sledd. I'm not sure if I have a Charles Saul in my lineage but will check it out. I take it that her maiden name was also Rucker? Would it not be strange that we are connected on both sides of families? Perdue would be on my Father's side and Saul would be on my Mother's side. THAT would be very unusual!

Regards,
Deborah Lynch Knecht

Thank You Layne
I have continued to search this family over the years and have some additional members, but may have combined two families without realizing it. I now have six children for this family. #1)Charles b 25 Jan 1902, d. 28 May 1905, buried at Sauls Cemetery. #2) Lee T. , b aft 1905, DeKalb County, Alabama, Married Beatrice Gavies, one child Alice Sauls,25 Sep 1935, D. 7 Jan 1938, Crossville, DeKalb County. #3 William E. (Bill) B. Abt 1907, d. 27 Sep 1960, Boaz. Marshall County, Alabama, married Ludie UK. One child, Helen B. Abt 1928. #3 Velma B. Abt 1910, d. June 1986, Crossville, DeKalb County, married first Watson Edward Fountain, second Unknown Roden, son Cecil H. Roden B. 16 Nov 1930, d. 15 Oct 2001, Crossville, DeKalb CountY. #5 Mae Sauls, b aft 1913, Lathamville, DeKalb County, M. Unknown Hall. #6 Margaret (Meg?) B. Abt 1915, M. Aubrey Peters. Can you confirm or correct any of this. I found the family in DeKalb County, about 20=25 miles from their home in the Sauls Cemetery area. This new area would have been much better farming land than the Warrior River Valley wher they were born. daltonn@knology.net

Hi Deborah
I too was born a Saul, but in NSW, Australia. My Saul ancestry goes back to Thomass Sall in Cawston in Norfolk England in the 1760s. You have a lot of Saul family history in the US even before you can work out where they came from in Europe/UK or Ireland. As you can see, the spelling of my Saul/Sall line changed, and close to Cawston is a place called Salle. So, I think my line were in Norfolk for a very long time.
Best wishes

Lorraine

I'm trying to determine if Asa ADAMS is my ancestor. His age given here is incorrect. He was born about 1807. His wife was Lydia Ann SAUL, daughter of "Jabee" and Mahala.
Re: Charles Saul

Hi Annette
Hope all is well at your end.We are fine although not liking all this hot weather that we have been having of late.
First I must correct you on something. You said that Ron MacKenzie is a direct descendant of Charles Saul, he isn't but his wife Robyn is.
Now about George Short.
I have found out that he married Mary Ann Longman on the 3 of September 1879 in New Norcia. There is a site you can go to to find out info like this. www.mcb.wa.gov.au
He died on the 2 June 1901 and was buried in Karratta cemetery in site 0118.
The info I have about Charles Saul is from another rellie Kim Milne and he said that according to family lore and what he has been able to find out on the net, that Charles and Mary Ann married in about 1880 in New Norcia also. Apparently you can go up to New Norcia and look at the records (something that I would love to do but haven't) (we live south of Perth just passed Bunbury and New Norcia is north of Perth - about an hour and a half drive (??) )
And as for the letter, I nothing about it. The family lore says that Charles was a whaler and came to Perth and met Mary and stayed. Don't know how they would have met as it is quite a way to go in a car let alone in a cart and horse.
It is all confusing.
I agree with you about it seeming strange that some one would change their name to avoid the stigma of being convict when all around were convicts. Especially as they stayed in the area. Why change your name if you were going to stay in the same place. Different if you were going to leave....
And why change the first and last names????
I to wondered about changing the name to Saul. But as you say, there may have been a rellie with that name. ???? too much to think about.
As to the photos, we don't have any old ones. Would love to though. Don't seem to know anyone that does have any either. Can't remember Kim mentioning anything about having photos or Ron for that matter.
Would love to hear from you again to see if you get any info. My email address is leafly@westnet.com.au
Bye for now

Lea

Re: Charles Saul

hi lea
i am researching charles saul for my sister-in-law, who is direct descendant of mary ann longman. her great grandmother was annie maria saul (mary anne's daughter) i have done a lot of research since i posted on the message board, and have taken into consideration the posts of "ron mckenzie" (direct descendant also) and michael cheeseman, who i a researcher that i have the utmost respect for. it appears that second husband charles saul, and first husband george short may be one and the same person. this is born out by the slip-up mary ann made when registering the birth of her daugher Louisa Saul - she entered her own name as mary ann short. there is no recorded marriage to charles saul, and it appears that the first child was born 9 months and 3 days after the marriage to Short (if i remember correctly) which is in itself rather puzzling. Short was a convict (as was Henry George Longman). Ron McKenzie theorizes that Short may have changed his name to Saul to avoid the stigma of being a convict. this would have been silly, considering that most of the population of WA at that time were ticket-of-leave men. to add more confusion, ron states that he has part of a letter from california, but on the post, does not elaborate. i am wondering if George Short (Saul) had relatives in USA. it seems that there was a huge influx of british immigrants to to USA around that time. a good portion of my rellies in Wiltshire emigrated to USA. That would account for the correspondence. I am stuck now - can't find any trace of Charles Saul anywhere overseas. do you have anything that can proove of the USA connection? I notice on familysearch.org, there are several references to this man, but all are stuck on "born abt 1850 - USA". If saul and short are the same man, it wouldn't be the first time i have come across these name changes, it also occurs in my own family. do you have any photos of the ancestors. we discovered an old photo of annie maria saul taken in the yard of her daughter doris mccarthy in tuart hill. that is all we have. i might go back on ancestry.com and check out george short, and see if anyone in his family had the name "saul", perhaps as a maiden name, because if he changed his name, i wonder why he picked such a strange new one? thanks heaps for your reply. i might email ron mckenzie as well, to see if he has any other leads. cheers for now.
annette grigo
for dallas grigo (nee tulley)

Hi Annette
My husband Barry is also a direct descendant of a Charles Saul. (if it is the same one) He came from California and we believe he was a whaler (???) he married Barry's great grandmother Mary Ann Longman in about 1880. They had 10 children (??) and he died in about 1897 in (we think) Midland Junction.
I haven't been able to find out anything from the America side of the tree(no answers to messages posted)
Have you been able to find out anything
Lea
