Rose Penfold nee Saunders

Hello,
I am trying to find information about my great grandmother Rose. She was born in around the turn of the century, sometime between 1900 and 1910 and married my great grandfather Augustus Penfold.
I have managed to find a record of her marriage and death but have had no luck with her birth records or any information about her parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know for certain where she was born but She used to live in Hastings, Sussex so my guess would be that her family lived somewhere in the immediate area.

Thanks!

I am looking for any information on Hannah Saunders family. She was born in 1831 (aprox.) in England. She came to Canada at some point But I am unsure of exactly when or where. She married Henry McLeod and had at least two children, a son William in 1852 and a daughter Isabella in 1858. At some point the family came to Ayr in Waterloo county. They had previously been in Nissouri, middlesex, to Oxford County, to Dumfries North in Ayr. She died in 1876 of cancer of the womb. If anyone has information on this line of Saunders, I would greatly appreciate it.
Email me directly: cmbking1025@yahoo.com
Thank you,
Christina King

Hello again: here is all the notes I have kept in my files on Reuben Saunders: have him born 1763 carolina co., va, died 26 oct 1842 either shelby co., ky or va., married to frances "fannie" gray all my notes are:

Bruce Evers
Salem OR
bcevers@comcast.net

Here is the journal. I'm intrigued with your post, as I have never been able to verify the Rueben Wren connection with my Rueben Saunders. I'd love to see your Saunders/Devers information. I'd like to hear from you after you read the journal to see how this works into your research. This journal was written on an old fashioned linen school composition notebook in 1914. Rueben Saunders was my ggggg grandfather.
When you read this, note that when the children of Rueben are listed, there is a mention of a child named Rueben, probably born outside the family, probably not born to his wife (Frances Jones).

Written by Grace Aguilar Veech in a journal that records the history of the Saunders and Veech families.

THE SAUNDERSES

The researchers of the annalist into the history of the Saunderses reach no further back than to one Reuben Saunders, who was the great great grandfather of sweet Ruth Mary Curry Dilley for whom this writing is made.
There is a tradition in the family that this man was of French extraction but authentic history finds him in Virginia in the latter half of the Eighteenth Century with no hint of parentage. We suppose he was born of woman and that he had a father. Scientific observations justify this conclusion but there is nothing to prove it.
Reports from the treasury Department and from the Bureau of Pensions at Washington DC show that Reuben Saunders was a soldier in the War of the Revolution (1775-1781). He enlisted from Caroline Co., Virginia in 1780 at the age of seventeen. This speaks eloquently for the patriotism of the boy as well as of the dire necessities of the colonial army at that time.
He set in, first, for three months, then enlisted two more times and was engaged in the last battle of the war - the siege of Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered to Clinton on the 17the day of October, 1781.
Our next source of information in family tradition, which shows Reuben Saunders a farmer in Shelby Co., Kentucky and the father of the following children: William, who at some time lived in Morrow Co, Missouri; Robert Stanfield, who married Artemisia Perry and was the great-grandfather of Ruth Mary Curry Dilley, Henry, of whom we can record nothing except that his wife's name was Mildred; Phillip, who married Mary Wright; James E., who married Elizabeth Perry and was the father of Mary Saunders Busey; (Artemisia Perry and Elizabeth were sisters.) Albert married to Jemima Low; John, who never married, and Jane, who became the wife of John Perry.
So now you see three of the children of Reuben Saunders married into the same Perry family. It is likely this happened more because of the difficulties attendant upon travelling abroad and finding new people than because the two families were so much enamored with each other; for it is reported that a member of one of them said in connection with these marriages, "Three slices off a musty loaf are quite enough". It is not retained in memory which thought the other 'musty'. If they were like their descendants -- and in fact like the descendants of all people-- each might have thought it of the other.
Stephen F. J. Tralm, attorney for Robert S. Saunders, received the last payment of a pension to Reuben Saunders for his services in the Revolution at the rate of thirty dollars a year up to Oct. 26, 1842 which was the date of his death. It is not stated when the pension began nor whether it had at any time been increased. But official records state that he went to Kentucky from Virginia in 1802. He was born in Caroline Co. of the latter State. This fact is gleaned from the records at Washington.
Following is a list of the names of his children unencumbered by other words. Seen that way the numerical force of his family is more apparent:
William, Robert S., Henry, Philip, James E., Albert, John and Jane. We learn later that there was a son named Reuben. Of these, all were of the Shelby Co, KY. except William. In a report from the Treasury Dept at Washington, he is listed as 'of Morrow Co, Missouri.
Tracing the chain of being from Ruth Mary Curry Dilley to Reuben Saunders we find the following links in their proper order:
Ruth (Curry) Dilley
Sarah (Veech) Curry
Cynthia Ann (Saunders) Veech
Robert Stanfield Saunders
Reuben Sanders.

The Children and Children's Children of Reuben Saunders

So far as we know William Saunders was discovered in the Pension Office at Washington and all we learn there is that he was.
To Robert Stanfield Saunders were born by his wife Artemisia:
Cynthia Ann, who became the wife of John Buskirk Veech and the grandmother of Ruth Mary Curry Dilley. She was born in Shelby Co. Ky February 19, 1823.
Sarah Jan, who married James Van Dyke and bore two children, Artemisia and Walker. The boy died in infancy. Artemisia lived to womanhood but died young. She was not married. Sarah Jane Saunders Van Dyke died while quite a young woman.
Walker died in his early manhood. He was unmarried.
James, who died suddenly while a child about eleven years old.
Artemisia Perry Saunders died at about the age of thirty three and Robert Saunders, her widower, then married Maria Louisa Jesse. To this union the following named children were born:

George William who died in infancy.
Artemisia who married a man named Thomas and is living now (1914).
John probably still alive (1914)
Reuben - no data -
Frances Flora married to Hansborough still living (1914)
Charlotte Henry married to Joseph Lee - died while yet a young woman.

The children of Henry Saunders were:
Lorinda, who married a man named Hawkins.
Frances, married a man named Minter. Grant, no data.

The children of Philip Saunders were:
Judith Ann, married to David Clarke (died about 1909).
Elizabeth Jane, married Willett Clarke, a brother to David (died about 1913).
Isabella, died young and unmarried.
Mary Frances, no data.
Stanfield, no data.
Isadore, no data.
Philip, no data.
Ellen, no data.

The children of James E. Saunders:
Amanda, who married to Baker. This man Baker acted as overseer for a man named Wyckliffe and defrauded his employer of a sum of money, probably considered large at that time. He left his home near Louisville, Ky by stealth leaving his wife to follow with their goods. She did so, carrying pistols for her defense in case any one attempted to stop her. But she was not molested, they stopped in Texas, at that time a harbor for miscreants, and grew to be wealthy. Their sons are still in Texas, except one who recently died very suddenly in San Franciso, and are handsome men with all the appearance of gentlemen. Their mother, Amanda Saunders Baker was the double cousin of Cynthia Ann Saunders Veech, as their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters.
Waller was disappointed in love, and embarked with Capt. Walker on a filibustering expedition to Cuba, presumably in the 40's. He returned to Kentucky a good many years after and it is thought he married a Mahaley.
Mary married to Thomson Busey. They early removed to Scotland Co., Mo and became the parents of the following children: Alice, John, James, Watt, Hudson, Harry Elizabeth and Caroline and Hattie.
Irene married to James Moore.
William , no data except that he died in the civil war -- probably never married.
Letetia, married John Willis.
Shelby never married. Losses in the Civil War reduced him to a physical and mental wreck.

The children of Albert Saunders:
Elizabeth was twice married, now a widow named Davis.
Ann Eliza married to Joseph Briscoe.
Felicia Jane was twice married, first to Bounds, then to Jeffries.
James Monroe died and is buried at Raritan Illinois. He was 27 years old.
Robert married Sallie Pulliam.
Twin Babies, a boy and a girl, died in a few months.
Maria Louisa married Bounds, a brother to her brother-in-law.
John Saunders was never married.

The children of Jane Saunders Perry were:
Julia, who became the second wife of James Van Dyke after the Death of Sarah Jane Saunders Van Dyke.
Martha, no data.
Anderson married his cousin May Jordan.
John Thomas no data.
Reuben Saunders was not married.

Frances Jones

Reuben Saunders, Revolutionary veteran and founder of the house of Saunders from which we spring was married to Frances Jones. She was very spirited and irascible, but not altogether unfeeling. On one occasion her little grand-daughter, Cynthia Ann, (shortened into "Cyntie") began to whimper in fear because of some of her grand-mother's didos. The old lady caught her up, kissed her, and said, "I would not hurt you, you little fool". This was probably not so very reassuring to the little girl for until her old age "Cyntie" thought the word 'fool' a very very profane word.
"Grand-mother Fannie" as we always called Reuben Saunderer's wife, objected to a marriage one of her sons contemplated. Someone urged upon her what was supposed to be the obvious truth that what is to be, will be. She replied that in this case "What is to be Sha'n't-be", and if he persisted in marrying the woman she hoped the 'slut's wool' (fluff) would be inches in depth under his bed. So you see, my dear, to buck against fate is not confined to times or to latitudes.
We know nothing whatever of Frances Jones's family or when or where she was born; except that she was born in time to marry Reuben Saunders, an event that we think she always regretted; but as in his case we suppose she was born of woman and had a father.

Robert Stanfield Saunders

An old portrait of him is before me. It shows a man in the prime of life. The brow is remarkable high and broad. "Massive" is the word it suggests. It is surmounted by short hair apparently so curly that it will not be parted, and it is simply combed back from the forehead and temples. The brown eyes look straight at me from deep sockets. The nose is large and strong and hooked. The mouth is large and firm with an upward bend at the corners. Since the view is a full front, we lose the outline of the chin but it shows up well above the 'double chin" and seems large enough to indicate Strength of character. The outline of the face is almost the ideal oval. The dress is that of a gentleman of means. A white 'cravat' of generous folds outside of the collar mingles so with it that we can not tell where one stops and the other begins. The tie or 'cravat' is a large square laid in diagonal folds outside the collar. The ends are knotted close at the throat and then hang across the shirt and extend upon the vest-collar. He was of medium height and stocky build. He walked with a cane being afflicted in both feet. It is not known whether this trouble was caused by an accident or by the malformation of his feet. He used the cane in a peculiar way, placing both hands one over the other on it's top.
He was an important member of his community. He was county clerk at Shelbyville in Shelby Co., Ky. This place was eight miles from his home. When court was in session he made this distance twice a day on his saddle-horse, Old Lady Jane, a small, bright bay who was retained on his farm as long as she lived. Besides this public work he administered on nearly all estates to be settled in his community. He bled people, literally, not figuratively, as that was one of the great remedies for ailments in his day; and so ingratiated himself with his neighbors as to know all their affairs and to be able to advise in most of their difficulties.
It may as truly be said on the whites as of the black people of the southern states, at that time, that they were born in slavery for it was no less a heritage to one than the other. So we may say our great fore bearer was 'born in slavery'. Whether he believed it a divine institution, as some did, I know not. What I do know is that he mitigated to the full extend of his ability its ills. He did not sell black people so as to divide families, but he sometimes bought them in order to keep the members of a family together. His kindness and generosity were shown in the fact that many unfortunates were sheltered under his roof. One time he took a little girl into his home because she was to be "bound out" and he feared she would not get a good place. She became his brother Albert's wife. He bought a little Negro girl once for the same reason.
He was a good businessman and inherited or amassed considerable wealth. He was of a nagging disposition and sometimes made those he loved miserable by harangues upon incurable ills. This trait has become hereditary. Let readers of future generations avoid it. He was approachable and loving, being the idol of his daughter Cynthia Ann, whose mother being of a more reserved disposition was never a comrade to the little girl as he was. He objected to the name of her last baby and never called her 'Grace', but always 'Cynthia Ann's little gal'.
He was born probably in Virginia but lived the greater part of his life in Shelby Co., Ky. The exact date can not be determined. His wife was born in 1800. It is safe to suppose that he was born in the 90's of the eighteenth century. He aided sometime between 1857 and 1861.
This chronicle would be very incomplete should this following item be omitted: Not only was Robert Stanfield Saunders "born in slavery" but he was born at a time and in a place where whiskey was as free, almost, as water. According to the custom, he began housekeeping with a barrel of it in his cellar. He said that he soon found that he wanted a drink of it the first thing every morning. He realized his danger and that was the last whiskey had had in his cellar. All honor to him! Amongst a generation of drunkards and where there was no restraint - upon the sale of intoxicants he lived an upright, sober life. "Cynthia Ann's little gal" doffs her hat too him in honor - proud to know that one man among her ancestors hated and feared the accursed thing while others thought it harmless.

Artemisia Perry

Artemisia Perry, the eldest child of Abraham Perry and Mary Williams and who became the first wife of Robert Stanfield Saunders was born in Shelby Co. Ky in the year 1800. We arrive at the date of her marriage, approximately by the birth of her first child which occurred in 1823, February 19.
This child was Cynthia Ann, who married John Buskirk Veech and became the grandmother of Ruth Mary Curry-Dilley.
In the girlhood days of Artemisia Perry pictures making by means of sunlight was unknown - at least in her community. However, a traveling artist made a hand painting of her in water-colors which is still in existence (1914). A copy of that made by Andrew Hagerman of Raritan, Illinois perhaps sometimes in the 60's of the 19th century gives the material for the following description of her:
As in the case of her husband, the unusual height and breadth of the forehead is the first thing we notice. Indeed such a forehead is hardly to be found except in portraits of ladies who lived a hundred or more years ago. The hair is a rich red-brown. The greater part of it is combed high and coiled on top of her head; but the front from the middle of the brow to the ear is cut short and combed forward in loose ringlets. The blue eyes are deep-set, very large, and veiled by drooping lids and long lashes. The expression is like that of Angelic Shlecelia as if she communed with unseen angels. The aquiline nose suggests both Strength and delicacy. The mouth is the ideal cupid's bow, but the chin is not so clean-cut as we would wish. The view is a 3/4 front. The outline of the face is as nearly a perfect oval as we have ever seen. The eye-brows are noticeably heavy but do not meet by quite a space. Altogether it a peculiar face, but one of rare beauty. The neck is very long, the dress low but too low for propriety. She wears two rows of beads close to the throat. A few inches below the bead is a wonderful ruff that stands both up and down. The up part follows the beads around her neck. The down part extends beyond the shoulder a short distance onto the sleeve which is finished at the wrist with a similar but narrower ruffle. The dress is of blue exactly the shade of her eyes. This fact is probably due to the poverty of the artist's colors. The picture is only a bust and the fashion of the dress, except that if it is close-fitting, is not shown.
The meager facts in her history at our command come by the oral teaching of her daughter Cynthia Ann, our mother. Slight of stature and delicate; reserved and dignified, almost cold in her manners; this was the impression she made on the sensitive, loving heart of her little girl who was only ten yeas old at the time of her mother's death in 1833. This date is not positively known; but our mother thought that was the year in which she died and it must have been about that time judging from certainly known facts. It seems exceedingly strange to us that these people either never kept, or else lost, their family records.
We have always thought - perhaps this old portrait is not a good likeness; but that it is partly accurate is shown by resemblances in Cynthia Ann's family to it. The peculiar opening of the eye is repeated in Robert, the brows and space between them and the eyelids, in Grace; the nose and expression of the upper lip, in Sarah. And in her youth there was a noticeable resemblance to the whole face of the picture in Grace's face, notwithstanding the fact that in comparing feature with feature the similarity would be lost. The original painting was made in 1819. The deep, sweet gravity of the face is unconscious solemnity of youth as it begins to look upon the great Mystery of life. So it impresses the observer; and so the facts in her life would explain it.
=============================================================================
Re: Wren Saunders of Caroline Co. My records indicate that a William Saunders was the son of Reuben Saunders, b. 1765, d. 1842, and Frances Jones. Williams brothers and sisters were Robert Stanfield, James, Henry, Phillip, Albert, Jane, and probably/ maybe a stepbrother to Reuben, Jr. Does this fit into your research? My records largely come from a very complete genealogy written in 1914 that I have. Also, I'm interested in the Hopkin book you mentioned. Louisa and Walter later moved to Missouri.
Appreciate any information.
==========================================================================
Thanks for this validation of the information that Clare Herrick and I believed about our Reuben's father. It fits with the right time frame for him and his wife, Fannie Jones, to be the parents of our Reuben Sanders. I don't have a month or year for Reuben (ours), just that he was born about 1797 and died in 1862. I don't know why the worksheet that I have on Reuben says that he died on 21 Sept. 1862. I found a diary entry in the JUDGE JASON NILES DIARY, a diary kept by a local judge here for over 40 years. It stated that "old man Reuben Sanders' wife" had died, but I don't see any reference to when HE died.

I did find in the diary a reference to our Reuben's son, Zach Sanders. It spoke of an inquest into his death. He was thrown from his horse, into a ditch, on 23 Dec. 1876, and died of "freezing, exposure, drowning, and strangling". What a terrible way to die!

I wish that your Reuben's wife's maiden name hadn't been Jones. I know that there were probably a million Fannie or Frances Jones. Do you know if they married in Caroline Co., VA? That would narrow the search down in the quest for who Fannie's parents were.

I have bought last night at an auction in south Carolina, several books of photos from your family. Usually I can't find anybody from a family that would want things I come across. You were easy to find. I stated taking photos from the albums thinking I wouldlnt be able to find anyone. I stopped and looked up the name before I finished. Send me an email if you are interested in getting them back. I have to make a profit from them simply because it is my business. If this sounds like a scam I can send you some pics from my phone. My email address is bhodge903@gmail.com. I have pics that date back to the late 1800's and from the first world war. Up to pics of Meghan Saunders from a dance recital in 1992. Some of the names are daddy Rob, Marcella, phillip Arthur, Janet dabney... Email me ASAP as the items need to be resold to get my money back.

Based on the 1900 U. S. Census, George was born in Alabama as were both his parents. This census further shows his father William's parents were both born in Georgia. See 1900; Census Place: Justice Precinct 4, Collin, Texas; Roll: 1621; Page: 2A; Enumeration District: 14; FHL microfilm: 1241621.

There is a family tree on ancestry.com which traces the family back to a Richard Saunders b. ca 1660 in Virginia. There is no hint of an Irish connection.

Saunders, this would be my GG Grandfather. Problem is there is no Patrick in the mix, and George, that is William's dad, according to the site, was clearly born in the US..?? any help would be much appreciated.
My grandfather was James Hansel Saunders(born 1916), George Gideon Saunders (born 1886) was his father.Georges father was William Arthur Saunders (born abt. 1858). Williams father was George M. Saunders(born abt 1827). I am looking for information that goes back further than that. Did we come from Ireland? Or was that just a great story my grandfather told us kids? Please help me find the truth!

This is all very interesting but not really helpful since you don't include any approximate birth dates or place of birth or where they may have resided and census information. Perhaps if you include more specific information someone may be able to assist.

I am trying to find my great grandfather, Paul Saunders. I know he lived in NYC and had 2 sons, one of which is my grandfather. He was also married a second time, and had more children (at least a daughter). His first wife's name was Theresa Grazias(my great grandmother). I am trying to find out something about him, as he left when my grandfather was young and we know very little about him.

For those who might like to learn the Laurence Saunders story, there is a good summary at: www.apuritansmind.com. Type Laurence Saunders in the search bar. Of course he is also in Foxes book of martyrs available online. Also here are transcripts of his questioniing, letters to his wife and letters from his brother seeking to have him recant. There is further a book: "Records of Tobias Saunderrs and his descendants (with a linial [sic] of the Saunders family from the year 1170." I have not yet located the book, except in the Library of Congress and have not yet seen it.
