Since these Bibles are in your personal possession, they have probably never been submitted to an Archive, Library, etc. Have you considered making copies for the NC Archives or submitting them to the DAR. I'm sure they would love to have a copy.

NC Sawyer: John d 1713, William d bef 1713, Thomas d 1720

Pondering only NOT PROVEN!!!: Is this William Sawyer detailed below the son of John Sawyer d Dec 1713 and did William Sawyer die before John's will was written? I believe this William Sawyer was very likely a son of John Sawyer d 1713. And did this William Sawyer who first appears in Pasquotank records May 1694 marry Mary Jennings, daughter of William and Mary Jennings of Aranouse Creek? If you look at the deed records, William and Mary Jennings "conveyed" part of William Jennings original 600 acre patent dated 1694 to William and Mary Sawyer in 1709. Then in 1710 William and Mary Sawyer "make over" 200 acres on NE side of Pasquotank River that is described as being part of that same patent and they quit claim it to John Norton. Then in 1713 William and Mary Jennings sell all remaining land out of the same patent (except what William and Mary Sawyer have already "conveyed" out of it (in other words, the remainder of the land after William and Mary Sawyer quit claimed 200 acres to John Norton} to William Ross). Then 5 days later in 1713 John Norton sells the land he got from William and Mary Sawyer in 1710 to William Ross. In addition I haven't found further information regarding William and Mary Sawyer in Pasquotank. So did William & Mary Jennings only give William & Mary Sawyer 200 acres in 1709? If so then William & Mary Jennings are selling William Ross the remaining 400 acres. Very confusing transactions. Needs research. What happened to William & Mary Sawyer? No will or estate for William but I think William Sawyer died before 1713 and Mary (Jennings) Sawyer married Thomas Rhodes as her second husband. If this William is the same William Sawyer who was on the 1694 debt list, he would have to be born bef 1673 so makes sense he was the son of John Sawyer who d 1713. This would make him about 26 years old when he married Mary Jennings who would have just turned 18 years old. Note that John Sawyer Jr, son of John who died 1713 named a son William. This William too young to be this William but could the young William have been named for his father's brother?

8 Mar 1693. "North Carolina Headrights A List of Names 1663-1744" p 138. Albemarle ss. Wm Jenings 650 acres for transportation of 13 persons. The persons viz. Patrick Bayley, Lucy his wife, Joseph Sparnon, Alice Sparnon, Robert Morgan, An Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Wm. Johnson, Mary Johnson, John Relfe, Mary Relfe, and Mary an Indian Woman. Survey and return for Wm. Jennings Senior and Thomas Johnson, assignee of Jennings 600 acres 25 Aug 1694 (This is an interesting entry. John Jenning's father, William Jennings, died by April Court of 1687 when his will was probated. In his will John is the only son listed. As far as has been discovered, the only adult William Jennings in Pasquotank at this time was John Jenning's son, William Jennings. So, this is John Jenning's son, William Jennings, and William is using his grandfather, William Jenning's headrights. See entries dated 29 and 30 Mar 1680 William Jennings for his grandfather using these headrights. Also of interest, this William, son of John, has now had a son named William Jr. See entry dated 1 Jan 1694. See entry dated 26 Oct 1700 where William Jennings takes Tho Johnson on as a apprentice to learn the cooper trade.)

May 1694 Chowan and Perquamous County, NC 1677-1701 53-45. Inventory taken 19 May 1694. A bill of landing (lading?) dated Apr 1684 on sloop Industry attested 24 May before John Hunt and Henry White. (Author believes this is the William Sawyer who bought land from William Jennings on Aranouse Creek. See 19 Jul 1709 entry where William Jennings and wife Mary convey land to William Sawyer and his wife Mary)

26 Oct 1700 Proved in court Jul 1704 by Robert and Elizabeth Morgan. When Mary, the widow of William Jennings, died in 1725 she named a son as John Relfe and son in law John Norton as executors (note that Mary left nothing but a shilling to John Relfe, and everything else to John Norton apparently because John Norton moved her into his house and took care of her in her old age)
25 Oct 1713 LDS Microfilm Wm and Mary Jennings sell land in "within mentioned patent" (No patent listed as far as I can tell)….(except what Wm Sawyer has conveyed out of it) to William Ross. And see 27 Apr 1710 where William and Mary Sawyer quit claim part of same patent to John Norton
30 Oct 1713 John Norton and his wife Mary sell land to William Ross. He signed and his wife used her mark. This deed says "…except what William Sawyer has conveyed out of it" (See the 27 Apr 1710 entry where William and Mary Jennings sell this land to John Norton)

1698 Daniel Phillips Court Case. The court later ordered that Thomas Relfe and Thomas Barkock lay out the Danl. Phillips and Joan his wife (x wife of Michael McDaniel) the third part of the lands and Tenements Michael MacDaniell Late Husband of the said Joan was Seized of. It is interesting to note that 1698 Gen.Ct. that Wiliam Sawyer ordered James MacDaneill to pay unto the petitioner William Sawyer thirteen shillings and four pence for his travill and attendance being summoned to give evidence

Recap: I think William Sawyer born ca 1670 (son of John Sawyer who died after Dec 1713)and died bet 1709 - Dec 1713. I think he married Mary Jennings, daughter of William (cooper of Aranouse Creek, son of John Jennings) and wife Mary about 1709. I think William & Mary Sawyer had no children and Mary m Thomas Rhodes as her second husband bef 1716.

Would like any input or opinions, please.
Hi. I found this thread following a random google search of my Dad's dad's name. I don't know much about my family history, except that I am a Sawyer, born 1991, and though my family live in Leicestershire, UK now, my dad's dad (a Stanley David Sawyer) was born in Wiltshire, possibly Marlborough, UK in 1931, and his father was a Stanley Sawyer too. I'd be interested if you knew if this was the same family. Katie

Thomas Sawyer d1720 - John Sawyer d 1713

Some new information and tentative conclusions regarding the long debated relationship between these two men:

17 Jan 1715/16 Court LDS Microfilm #19528 p 111-112 Deed dated 9 Dec 1713 I, Thomas Sawyer give to Henry McDaniel a certain piece of land 200a (confusing language but he gives Henry 200a out of a 400a patent) being part of a development taken up by Thomas and surveyed and patented in my name for 400a on NE of Pasquotank River. Signed by mark Thomas Sawyer. Witness Timothy Reading Henry Burkley, Richard Hastings (It is almost certain this Henry McDaniel is the husband of the daughter named Dancy/Nancy “McDannell “who is named in Thomas Sawyer’s 1720 will. Remember women typically did not hold land at that time. The daughter’s dower property, in this case land, was normally given to her new husband such as John Jennings’ assignment of land to his son-in-law Thomas Sawyer. A record of a future sale is being sought. Author also believes this man is the son of James McDaniel.)

17 Jan 1715/16 Deed dated and to Court LDS Microfilm #19528 p112 I Thomas Sawyer do assign over all my right and title of a within mentioned land between Caleb Sawyer and Richd Hastings to be severally divided between them. Wit: Timothy Reading, Henry Buckley, Henry McDaniel. Signed by mark Thomas Sawyer (Later acknowledgement language clarifies that Thomas meant that the land in between their land be equally divided between them.)

(Important Note: If Caleb was born 1703 as is conjectured, he would only have been 14 at this time. A man had to be 16 years old for tithes and military service but 21 years old to own land. This deed proves Caleb born ca 1694 when corresponds to the date John Jennings assigned over 850a of his land grant to Thomas Sawyer, probably on the marriage of Thomas to John Jenning’s daughter, Mary Jennings. Therefore, Thomas Sawyer must have been born by 1673/74 which would make him too old to be the son of John Sawyer b 1663 d 1713. Either John Sawyer Sr or his son John Sawyer Jr said in a 1695 deposition regarding the witnessing of the killing of John Sanderlin at John Jenning’s house that this John Sawyer was 32 years old which would make him born ca 1662-1664. In 1713 John Sawyer Sr and Jr are among the men fined for not going to the Indian Wars. If John Jr was the man born 1662-1664, his father, John Sr would have to have been born ca 1642-1644 and would have been appx 70 years old in 1713 – author believes much too old to be going to war. Note that several men of that age were asking exemption on the 1719 Pasquotank Tithables list. So John Sawyer Sr was the John Sawyer who was born ca 1662-1664 and the John Sawyer who with wife Mary went to court in 1680 to get their rights certified. This would make John Sawyer Sr age 18 at the time he went to court. SO….what this deed indicates is it is extremely unlikely that John Sawyer Sr is the father of the Thomas Sawyer b ca 1673/74 d 1720 as that John Sawyer would only be 11-13 years old at the time this Thomas Sawyer was born. This does not solve the mystery of the parents of John Sawyer Sr and Thomas Sawyer although John appears to have been brought in by Edmond Belson as a headright prior to 1679. Nor does it explain the sudden appearance of Henry Sawyer at the same time as Thomas Sawyer or the close time arrival of William Sawyer and his wife Mary who are connected by land transactions to John Jenning’s son William and William’s wife Mary. The other mystery is why Thomas and William Sawyer didn’t use headrights for themselves nor did anyone else use their headrights . So does this indicate that Thomas and William were born in Albemarle? Stephen Sawyer and John Sawyer Jr also never listed in headrights either but John Sawyer and Mary were in Albemarle by 1680 and none of the children named in John Sawyer Sr’s 1713 will were named in his 1680 court appearance because none of them were born at that time. This is a puzzle within a puzzle as Robert Sawyer was granted land in 1693 which means he would have to have been born ca 1673 so why isn’t he listed on the 1680 court document with his father John and mother Mary???? But Robert was listed as a headright on the grant to him and his father (or brother) so it is certain that Robert wasn’t born in Albemarle. Lots more research needed.)

{NOTE:Prior conjecture regarding Caleb’s true birthdate is now verified: Edna Shannonhouse and I have believed for many years that Caleb was NOT born 1703 as is stated in some histories. We believed Caleb born ca 1690-1695 – now proved he could not have been born much after 1694.}

Would appreciate opinions and comments. Thanks, Peggy Thomas

You are talking about Eunice Sawyer, daughter of Peter Sawyer? The 1800 census has her mother with dates between 1755 and 1774, so Nancy (Stark) must be older than 1785. I found one family record with the name Eunice Stark born 1766-died 1850 as the wife of Peter. But he married a second time to Chloe Landon and I don't see how she could be the mother of Eunice Sawyer born 1796.

Re: John Sawyer d1713 wife Jean

A SPECULATION ONLY---- please don't make this a fact...:

Jean McDaniel was likely a relative, probably daughter or sister, of Thomas Price who left will dated 1689 and proven 1696 in Pasquotank.
Thomas Price will abstract below:
18 Sep 1689 Will written 24 Feb 1696 Will Proved In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Price of Pasquotank in the province of Carolina planter being sicke and weak butt of perfecte memory and understanding Doe make this my Last will and testament-
First, I beqet my body soule to my maker Creator and redener my body to be buried Cristian like and as for my Land or all Estate I bequeath it as following Itt: I Give my Wife one yearling heafer Itt: I Give my God Son Mickahell McDannell my plantation three Cowes and my mare and Gunn Itt: I Give John Humpry his Girle Mary Humprey one Cow and Cow Calfe Itt: I Give all the rest of my share to Mikahell McDannell his Children to be Equally Devided and as for my housholl stuff I Give to Joan McDannell I Give one Gun to John Sayer I Desire that my Debtes may be paid out of the Estate and my body to be buried Cristian Like I being in perfecte memory and understanding Doe hereunto sett my hand and seale this 18th Day of September 1689
(unknown)
The marks of The mark (P) of Thomas Price
Mikahell Coner , the (H) Marke of John Sayer, Gaerell Keon (listed on 1719 Pasq Tithables List)
Feb 24th 1696 This Will proved by oath of Gareal Koen & John Sawyer Before the Honeble Governor & Councell W Glover Clk. Daniel Phillips named Executor of Will by Court
----------
So Michael dies between 1696? - 1698 as James McDaniel, believed to be son of Jean (Price) and Michael McDaniel sues 1698 Daniel Phillips and wife JEAN for his third of Thomas Price's land. Thomas Relfe and Thomas Barkock appointed to section off 1/3 or the land for James McDaniel. William Sawyer is witness for James McDaniel.
-----------
Questions: When did Daniel Phillips die? We can make an reasonable assumption that John Sawyer d 1713 was the John Sawyer mentioned in Thomas Price will as Thomas and John were together in Carteret Court in 1680 proving their headrights so they knew each other, apparently came to Carolina together, and lived near each other. In 1680 John Sawyer names his wife as Mary. When John writes his will in 1713, he names his wife as Jean. Just speculating.....could this wife be Jean (Price) McDaniel Phillips? James McDaniel and Henry McDaniel both have numerous land transactions with Thomas Sawyer d1720 and with many of the Sawyer men believed to be the sons of John Sawyer d1713. So was James McDaniel's mother married to John Sawyer? Remember that Dancy/Nancy/? McDanell was listed as a daughter in Thomas Sawyer d1720 will so relationship may be that James is married to Thomas' daughter Dancy/Nancy. Some on Ancestry say James married to Mary but not so(Mary named Mary Sawyer in Thomas' 1720 will but Dancy/Nancy could be James McDaniel's wife).....Just some things for everyone to ponder.
I've hunted and hunted for this 1696 Pasquotank John Sawyer will. Could you please tell me your source? This might clear up some old mysteries about the John1713 - Thomas1720 relationship if this will can be found as the John Sawyer who was given the gun by Thomas Price is now proven to be the John Sawyer who d1713. Land grants prove. I'll gladly share proofs. Regards, Peggy

Arcell, I know this is an old post of yours but hope you get this. Just a quick correction for your records. I can now prove that John Jennings was the stepfather of Capt Thomas Relfe, not his father-in-law. The terminology at that time was different. John married Dorothy (LNU) Relfe, widow of Dr Thomas Relfe and I now believe Dorothy was the mother of John's daughter Mary who married Thomas Sawyer.

Have grants for John Jennings granting 650 acres to Thomas Sawyer 1693 and 450 same time, same place...NE side of Pasq Riv on Sawyer Creek. John lists Mary Sawyer in his will 1713 and Mary on 1720 Thomas Sawyer land deeds in connection with his estate.

Would LOVE to hear from you.
Sorry, just saw your post. See my Thomas Sawyer d1720 entry I just posted in regards to Jennings connection. Would love to compare data. I am just about to wrap up my Sawyer line and put it to bed but have a few loose ends I'm trying to prove before I do it.
Thomas Sawyer d1720

Have proven info regarding Thomas Sawyer wife, Mary Jennings, daughter of John Jennings, granddaughter of William Jennings (original settler in Pasquotank), and sister of William Jennings. Much info on William Jennings(orig settler) grant of land at New Begun Creek in what is now Pasquotank County, NC on the SW side of Pasq Riv. Sept 1663. William involved in Culpeper Rebellion (see on internet or NC history)and an original explorer with George Durant to Albemarle area ca 1660 (see Perquimans Co NC History on internet for details).

I have a handwritten original copy of Thomas Sawyer's 1720 will in which it clearly states that Dancy/Nancy/Darcy McDowell is Thomas' daughter, NOT his wife. Believe I can prove that this Dancy/Nancy was married to Henry McDaniel (Thomas' will can be read as her name being McDowell or McDanell) whom Thomas gave land in 1719. Waiting for copy of deeds from LDS microfilm to confirm.

Thomas' wife is named as "wife" in his will. However, Jul 1720 estate related deeds name Thomas' wife as Mary and John Jennings will names his daughter as Mary Sawyer. John Jennings assigned 650 acres to Thomas Sawyer 1693 on NE side of Pasquotank River on Sawyer Creek and 450 acres in same place to William Jennings, John's son. These grants surveyed for the two men 1696 by Capt Thomas Relfe.

Will share info/sources if you need it. Peggy

I recently purchased a 1914 Hartmann Wardrobe Trunk from an auction with 'C.B. Sawyer' stenciled on top. It is barely readable, but the letters can be made out. I was wondering if anyone knows of a C.B. Sawyer and any usuage of the trunk for traveling means. I am very interested in finding out the history of the trunk. There are two areas where 'stickers' for possible traveling were applied.

Info about the trunk:
Made in October 1914, inside is a leaf with berry print on blue material. It has 5 drawers on one side of the trunk and the otherside has an area to hang linens with a briefcase that can be taken out. The trunk is in good condition for its age.

Thanks for any information that can be provided,
Melanie J

Arcell, I'm sure you have found this info already but if not, "Wife of Thomas Relfe identified was daughter of John
Jennings (NO) and assigns right of title of patent to father in law,John Jennings (NO, John Jennings married this Thomas Relfe's mother, Dorothy, and as was the language back in 1693/4, father in law meant "stepfather. See the Oct 1680 court record where John is called to court to make settlement regarding Thomas Relfe's estate.) Jan 27 1693/94 Wm.Jennings,Thomas Relfe, and Mary his Wife sign. John Jennings had one proven daughter Mary and she married Thomas Sawyer and is listed in John Jennings will of 1713 as Mary Sawyer. (Further proof, Thomas Relfe and Dorothy had one daughter Elizabeth who married Richard Rhodes. Richard's will dated 2 Mar 1693/94 and wife listed as Elizabeth. Dorothy Jennings files petition as guardian for two young Rhodes orphans saying she is their grandmother.)

I have many questions regarding this Relfe line as it is intertwined with my Sawyer line. Thomas Relfe came to New Begin Creek in Pasquotank Sep 1663 along with many others from Virginia (recorded in "Cavaliers and Pioneers", Nugent's books)including William Jennings, John Battle, and Robert Peel. Robert Peel's grant says specifically that his land is located next to Dr Relfe.

Questions: This was in Sep 1663. Will of John Jennings of Pasquotank. Son William Jennings. Wife Ann. Daughter Mary Sawyer Daughter Elizabeth Reding. (Ann almost certainly not their mother. Believe their mother is Dorothy who was married 1st to Capt Thomas Relfe. See Ann’s will dated 20 Feb 1720)

So to recap: William Jennings and Dr Thomas Relfe came to New Begin Creek (SW tributary of Pasq Riv) Sep 1663. I think they had sons, John Jennings (per William Jennings 1687 will) and Capt Thomas Relfe. Capt Relfe and (some wife, not sure who the Thomas Relfe Jr mother was)But Capt Thomas Relfe's wife Dorothy were headrights for John Jennings 1100a which he assigned to William Jennings and Thomas Sawyer.

John Jennings assigned his headrights to Thomas Sawyer, his daughter's husband in the Feb 1696 land transactions. The William Jennings assigned land with Thomas Sawyer from John Jennings is almost certainly John Jenning's son, named in his dated 1713 and probated 1720 will.

I have page after page of references like these and think I am now able to make some intelligent conclusions. If you are researching the controversy of the relationship between John Sawyer d1713/Thomas Sawyer d1720 Albemarle/Pasquotank Co line, I'd like very much to correspond off line. pjt.thomas@gmail.com

Regards, Peggy Thomas

Hi Sharon,

I have not done much research yet outside of my direct lineage. I see our link would be my 2x great grandfather's sister then.

There was some stories my mother has told me about how the Sawyer family actually changed their name when they came to the US, but I don't know how true that is. She said it might have originally been Sayer or Saier.

I'm not sure about Marion, MI. I'm originally from Middleville, MI which is south of Grand Rapids and north of Kalamazoo. I've lived in Chicago now for the last 15 years, but my parents are still in that area. I know Roy and many of his family members were from northern MI. He lived in the Newaygo/White Cloud area.

Hello Brad,

Sorry for the delay in answering. I haven't been very active in researching, but hope to get back to it this year.

I have some of your family from Dave Wallace who I'm sure you're aware of. His line goes from John Wesley>Marguerite Sawyer Hammond>Margaret Hammond Wallace>David Wallace.

I haven't had much luck finding Ransom's family in Canada either. I did find Ransom listed twice in Markham Township records, which is now on the outskirts of Toronto. I hired a researcher in Ontario. He wasn't able to give me any definite connections. You've probably found out that early records are hard to come by. There was a Reverend Joseph Sawyer who was in the right place at the right time to be Ransom's father, but no actual evidence. I was able to find Rev. Sawyer's will in New York, but he did not list any children. There was a fairly large group of Lott families (Ransom's first wife's maiden name was Lott) in Markham Township but he could not make a connection.

I think further research will be very expensive if we use a researcher. I have thought of asking my uncle to do a DNA test in the hope of connecting with other Sawyers in a Sawyer surname group. It's a long shot. I'm going to see
him next summer.

I see you were born in Marion, MI. You were probably 5 miles away from the farm that Joseph and Almira bought near Hartwick Township in the 1880's. That farm was bought by son Samuel, and then grandson, Lyle Sawyer (my dad). Are you still in Marion?

My email address is psked@hotmail.com.

Sharon Sawyer Mora

OOPS! Hit enter before I meant to. William Jennings had a at least two sons. William and John Jennings. John was granted 1100 acres of land in Pasquotank 1696 and immediately assigned 650a of the grant to Thomas Sawyer (Thomas was married to John Jennings daughter, Mary Sawyer) and the remaining 450a to his brother William. I don't have proof yet but I think that John Jennings was a lawyer or other type of educated professional. He doesn't appear to have been a planter.

I've now got pages and pages of summaries of documents and transactions between the Sawyer, Jennings, Price, Relfe, Keile/Keele, etc. lines of Pasquotank Co, NC in appx date order.

I had no response to my last post so don't know if anyone is still researching this line. If you are, I'll gladly email you the entire working document which includes Nugent info that proves the location of the Jennings and related Sawyer family in VA (ca 1649 Capt John Jennings)to very early Albemarle/Pasquotank, etc. I've now proven that Jennings and Sawyer along with Relfe and a few other lines were among the first settlers that moved from VA into what became the Carolinas. Date 1663 per Nugent grants.

This is a draft copy and it's a big file so you'll need to be able to receive it on email. Peggy
