I can clarify the Harmon Sox family of Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, he being my GG Grandfather. Herman (also called Harmon) came from Thuringa, Germany ca. 1835, and lived in or near Wilkesbarre, PA for several years while helping to construct a railroad in Luzerne Co. He married Margaret Owens on 27 Dec 1838, daughter of Redman (or Redmond) Owens and Christiana Arnold Owens of Sugarloaf Twp, Luzerne Co, PA. Herman (1814-1888) had 9 children: Emily, Jane, Ella, Edward F., Hattie (Harriet), Mary, Louis N., Harmon/Herman E., and Amanda. Edward was my G Grandfather. I live in California.

Hello

I am searching for any information on my father Victor Saxes family, he was born on the 5th of June 1930 in Islington London England, orphaned from birth my father grew up in various boys homes, one i recall him mentioning was summerset house, not sure of the spelling. My father eventually left England as a teenager and moved and settled in New Zealand where he married and raised 5 children, the only information my father had was on his bith certificate his mothers name May Saxe, father unknown.

Please any information or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou

Anne-Marie Saxe

I have been unsuccessful in tracking down the Staggers/Saxe family. I would really like to get these photos to the direct family they belong too. Estelle Saxe, nee Staggers (1885-1962) had 2 children Leo C Saxe (who had no children) and Glenn Theodore Saxe (1915-1950), Glenn had 2 or 3 children Sandra/Saundra (who married young) and Dan Saxe. I have been unsuccessful in finding these 2 individuals who would benefit from these items. If anyone out there has any ideas on tracking them, please let me know.

I have this Saxe family in my family tree. It is large! I'm not a direct descendant.

This post from "The Sullivan Review" (Sullivan means Sullivan County, PA and Commisky Cemetery is in Bradford County, PA...right next door, so to speak.) on 11 Oct. 1883:

Few families can boast of the strength and health of the children of the late John SAXE, Sr. of Wilmot Twp., Bradford Co. Seven boys and five girls have grown to manhood and womanhood under his care, and now survive him. A four and a half ton monument was raised last week at his grave in the Commisky Cemetery. C. I. LACEY was present to superintend the work, it having been manufactured under his direction, and six of the stalwart sons of the deceased, viz: Martin, John, Samuel, Lewis, Lawrence and Henry, took hold and with their own hands carefully raised the structure that shall mark their father’s resting place.

The elder John was born in Offerberg, Kinsingrice, Germany on 31 January 1811. His son, William (not present when the monument was raised)married my Great Grand Aunt, Mary Ellen Junk. When she died, Mary Ellen's sister, Josephine, helped raise the two boys, William and Edmond. The Saxe children migrated with the Junks from Bradford & Sullivan County's PA to Tioga County and then on to Potter County where Josephine died when the Austin Dam broke on Sept. 30, 1911. Surviving were Lewis Junk and family who moved to Niagara Falls, NY, and Lucy Junk Quimby and children moved to Corning NY. William John Saxe came to Greenville, Mercer County, PA where his Uncle William Henry Junk lived.

I descend from William Henry and live in Greenville. Just to show you how life has it's twists and turns. Not knowing any of this, I married and had a daughter. When she was 3 years old, she attended pre-school. She got invited for her first sleep-over at a classmate's home. That classmate was a descendant of William John Saxe...her 4th cousin and nobody even knew they were related for another 20 years!

I wonder if any of the Junk surname are mentioned in your collection, but the Grandmother of my daughter's classmate still resides here, though her husband has since passed.

Thanks for your post, Diane Junk

His son William, born in 1848

I wanted to save them from being disposed of, now I have to find the family members that are most closely related and may have other documentation to help identify these folks. These photos belonged to Samuel E Saxe and his wife Estelle Slagger, who originally lived in PA and Estelle moved to DC after the death of her husband to be close to her last living son (who was my Uncle and had no children).

I have a shoe box full of "Saxe" and Extended family photo's, some are tin pictures, 100's of photo's some labeled some are not. My Aunt married Leo C Saxe, he inherited these photo's after his parents passed, Samuel & Estella Saxe who came from PA to Washington DC. Also, there are books that my Uncle hired a genealogist to do histroy on his family back in the 60's & 70's. Also a Saxe family bible.

You and I won't believe this.I'm 88, studied with Sam, when he lived on 3rd floor, next to drugstore, at the curve of streetcar, next to Franklin Park zoo. Then moved few blocks into Roxbury.I continued lessons. A few students I heard but didn't meet, took lessons before me: Arnold Ross (Rosenberg); Sid Hurwitz (sp?)
I studied ages 12-17, stopped when I entered college. Enlisted in Air Force, met my wife in service, married when WWII over - in Boston. Visited Sam and Dorothy, within week after marriage. Zelda (right?) was around briefly. It was Aug. '45. Told us they were going to L.A., Arnold was with Harry James, talking Sam up to many, told him and Dorothy there were students waiting for him. Next time we saw him: L.A., his home, 196i. My 2 sons there, played for them, Dorothy called us into kitchen, told us Sam was dying. I was there when he died, many students there. Please call, so much more. 847-302-2433.

Note: I still have signed photo of Sam at piano. My father fugure during teens.

Hi Sharon - I have studied for years with someone who had studied with Sam Saxe and who took over his students and methods after he passed away. I would think that she would be one of the best people for you to talk with. Her name is Helene Mirich and she lives in Mar Vista, California.
Sharon,

I asked my dad if he knew of any relatives of my grandfather, outside of my immediate family. He said that he had a cousin that moved to California named Samuel Saxe - he didn't know where though.

We have the same name and this sounds like it could be around the same time... I wonder if we could be related.

Please email me with your contact info - perhaps we can discuss this in further detail. david.scott.saxe@gmail.com

I'm looking for any information on my grandfather Charles Saxe (born: Nov 17, 1910, died: Mar 1, 1974). He was married to a woman named Emma but I don't know her last name. They lived in Lincoln Park, New Jersey and had 4 children: Gary, Patricia, Robert and Hugh.

Any information would be helpful as I'm completely stuck.

Thanks!

Hi Larry,
I want to tell you that I have been in touch with Jack Sipple. Also, we continue to find more people buried in Stoddartsville cemetery including Jack's grandfather. I found a list with 8 more names in the Monroe County Historical Association and a friend found another list in the Lehigh Valley Historical Society with three more names. We also found a veteran on the findagrave site.
We now have a groun called the Stoddartsville Preservation Society to work on the cemetery. It has had two clean up days and the cemetery looks great.
I shared the information you so kindly gave me with Marci Blakeslee Bendix.
I'll try to keep you informed about more progress.
I have avoided insulin so far. I am 87 and will try to keep that way, but I still love my sweets and give in too often to temptation.
Gene

It has helped a good deal in my research and I have given it to some of the Blakeslee family .
I continue with my regime of disabetes, but have been put on an extra pill and also on a heart pill because my heart beat was irregular. Otherwise I am doing okay.
I too an aging. I am almost 87 and a half.
It is always great to hear from you.
Gene

I would like to use DNA to confirm my Saxe line back to John Saxe b 1732 in Langensalza, Thuringia, Germany. I already have test results for my line, which descends through John's son Jacob. I would like to compare results with another descendant of John through another son to support the accepted paper trail back to John and to learn more about any mutations which may have happened in our line since John. Identifying such mutations might help us learn what other Saxe men share slightly more distant Saxe ancestry.

This is a very good time to order 37 marker Y DNA testing for men. The price for the 37 marker test when ordered through a project such as the Germany Y DNA Project is as low as I have ever seen it, and a mitochondrial DNA test is being thrown in, but this package is only available for a limited time.

I am happy to answer questions about Saxe DNA testing.

Kirsten Saxe

Joseph was born 1849 in Russia. A tailor, he arrived in 1887. He lived in the boston area, where he died in the 1920's.

Wife's name was leah.

The children, who I am having a hard time tracking (since its hard to find married names for women at this time) are:

Louis, George, Harry, Nellie, Rose, Bessie, Jane. All born around 1880-1890. Louis I know a lot about, since thats my family line. He was my great-grandfather.

George N. Saxe, Louis' brother, married Jenni Dane who died in MA, USA 1857. They had Charlotte, Abraham, Lillian and Marian. This is as far as I can take them.

Louis' other brother, Harry, had Rose, Lazarus, Herbert, Hellen. That's as far as I can take Harry.

Any possible info? I would appreciate it.

David,
According to the lengthy document I received one of the Conrad's was the father of George. John was a brother. All came from New Jersey. Later in the day I shall consult the document to see if Shiffers are mentioned. I know they were on the map. The property you mention is now part of the recreation area for the public. It is part of the program to keep Pennsylvania green.
Gene

Dear gen22 (is that Gene?),

Thanks for the information... Yes, I have seen that map... is the property on 115 on the right side of the road (as you LEAVE Blakeslee), right near the creek/river, just before you get on the Interstate the tavern site? There is an old (early 20th century) building on the site now. That land was for sale a few years ago for $90,000?, it is seated on a "100 year flood plain" so it could not be used for much. Someone once told me that a local newspaper account noted that George's son, Sterling (my direct relation), refused to pay the $1.75 tax on the property!

My BIG question is ...... who was George Sox's father? Was it one of the Conrad's? And if so, which one? OR was it a John Sax? Also, I wonder about the Sax relations to the Shiffer family... In the 1850? census, Sarah Sax (then 65) was keeping house with her son Sterling (then in his 20s) together with three Shiffer's children very young? Perhaps Sarah was a grandmother? to these children, children of one of the Sax sisters?

Any case, if you could help me solve the mystery of George's father, I would be most appeciative!

Best,

David
