Hi Patti,

I suspect that all of the Yorkshire Scales are related, it's just a matter of how far back. The 'Addie' rings a bell, but not from my line, as far as I know.

My line is from Pickering and environs. Interestingly there is another family of Scales in Pickering, who use almost all of the same forenames (the Rookes Scales family), and yet I can find no relationship. I am sure it must be there somewhere, but I have had no joy.

My daughter is in Scotland right now and went to my husband's ancestral home and was amazed that the majority of the people in the churchyard were related to her. Not something that happens often in North America.

Hi Holly. My Scales also came from Yorkshire, England (Barnsley). Walter Addie Scales and his son Walter Raymond are in my line. Sound familiar? Hope so. I'm traveling to England the end of May and hope to be able to visit family places and fill in some gaps. Any information to help me in my quest or things I could look for for you? Patti Markham

In your list is my Grandfather. He is My mother's Biological father whom I see from time to time still. I live in Columbus, Ohio as well. I am doing a search to find out my ancestry and I came across your list. Do you have any other information that could be of assistance? My Grandmother was Rachel Scales of Rockingham NC. She had a son Eli, Fountain, Jeanetta. Do you have any information on them? Remember that West Virginia did not become a state until the 1860's and it was formed mostly from Virginia. I would start checking all slave schedules available for the various Scales families who owned plantations in 1850 and 1860. You might want to see if you can find any wills as wills will often list slaves by name. I know North Carolina has/had marriages of slaves from right after the Civil War on Microfiche, these might be digitized now. There were several Scales marriages on these records that were of their freed people.

Does your research include any slaves? My GGG grandfather Bob took on the surname of his owners (Scales)... before that he went by "Bob Williams". Bob married another slave named Patience (Patience could also have been owned by the Scales family). He supposedly came from West Virginia. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Rebecca. I'm curious whether your 130-page research volume on the Scales can shed light on a branch that I think began in Rockingham Co. NC and then went to Kenton Co, KY. John Washington Scales (b. 1798 or 1802, d. 1878 in Kenton Co. KY) was the Scales who moved west to Kenton Co. There he had at least two sons, Joab and James. Joab Scales is my GGG grandfather; he eventually moved to Toronto, after the Civil War, and named one of his sons Christopher Columbus Scales.

Sorry, I can't help. It sounds as though your Scales might be related to mine. Old family tradition is that my grandmother had "Indian blood" in her background, but no details. I believe William Scales was possibly of Cherokee descent. Many of the Scales from that area were Charokee, and his line is the only likely candidate for my Grandmother's purported native American roots.

I am searching for a Rachel Scales (unknown maiden name) who lived in Rockingham, NC. She was born in Virginia in 1790. She is supposed to be of Native American decent. She had a daughter in 1828, her name was Jenetta or Jenette. Jenetta's Native American name was supposedly White Fawn. She married John Riley Fair.

we are here in eastern nc my grandfathers name was mina sidney scales and father was james william scales from winston salem nc about 10-15 miles from mt airy.

Scales in Stevenage, Hertfordshire

On my mother's side I have traced back to John Scales, born in Stevenage around 1780, who married Sarah Deards (b. 1784-ish) on July 16, 1804 in Stevenage.

There was at least 1 son (James) b. 1806 who married Elizabeth Dilly at Buckland, Herts, Oct 8, 1830. They had 10 children!

Any information on the parentage of John Scales or Sarah Deards would be welcome.
