Hi David, Nice to hear from you. I am a bit confused so I am hoping you can clarify for me and help me find some evidence. In the 1870 census George Scarboro is living with Susan. His age is listed as 33 and Susan is listed age 65. In the 1860 census his age is listed as 22 years and Susan's age 53 years. In the 1860 census George and Susan are living between Talbert Hackle (spelled Hackel on the census) and Jackson Scarboro. Do you know what the date of their marriage was? I have searched for their marriage record and do not see it. You stated Susan was married to George after the War, but she is living with George in the 1860 census so she must have been living with him prior to the War. When did John Hackle die? I am wondering if we are perhaps confusing George Scarboroughs. There are several of them. I am not doubting you, I just need to get my head around this, not only because of the 30 plus year age difference but because something does not fit with my George Scarborough, brother of Samuel and son of Jackson. If Susan married John in 1826 my George was not born until circa 1837 so I cannot see how George and John could have grown up together. Can you enlighten me as this Susan listed has long confused me. I always thought she may have been a Scarborough (spinster sister of Jackson) but that was just a guess. You have really got my head spinning which is a good thing so I get back into genealogy again! Thanks!

I am the gg-granddaughter or Samuel Scarboro(ugh) (George's brother). In what county did Susan McGarr Hackle and George Scarboro(ugh) marry and how is Susan's name listed (Hackle or McGarr)? I am trying to branch out from the direct line of Jackson Scarboro(ugh) (George and Samuel's father).

Any information would be appreciated.

Peggy Ross

Laura

Susan Scarboro age 53 was my gggg grandmother. She married George after the war. George and my ggg grand father John Edward Hackle were life long friends and grew up together. In the marriage record she is listed as the groom, funny!! She is the daughter of Edward McGarr, and died 1871 in Emanuel County, Georgia. Susan McGarr married John Hackel 02 Sep 1826 in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, John and died Bef. 13 Jan 1834 in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.

Hi Peggy, How are you? I am just now getting back into genealogy. My husband has been very ill for the last six months so I have been busy with him. But he just got the all clear last Wednesday from the doctor so it is celebration time now. I am SO ready to get back researching.
Wasnt Rachael Scarboro the sister of my great grandfather Thomas Scarboro ? Their father being Samuel Scarboro? If I am right then we are cousins somehow! Well a cousin is a cousin as far as I am concerned! Please feel free to email me privately. My email address is laurafitzpatrick2001@yahoo.com. Lovely to hear from you. By the way I have another cousin, Jeff, that lives in Massachusetts that would also love to hear anything we can dig up about these Scarboros. He just started researching and is very interested in the Scarboros. He and I share the same grandmother, Willie Ana Scarboro daughter of Thomas. Can't wait to hear from you. You probably have more information than I do but I will share what I have.
Take care
Laura

Laura,

Are you still doing research on the Scarboro(ugh) family? I am the gg-granddaughter of Samuel (son of Jackson) through his daughter Rachael who married William Gray Wilcher (Emanuel County in 1882). I would like to hear from you and if you would share your information with me I would be appreciative. I just began my research last year and I have found information on Samuel (died in 1918). Samuel and Susan are both buried in the Jones Cemetery outside of Blundale Georgia in Jefferson County.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Peggy Ross

Luther Scarboro/Scarborough/Scarbrough late 1800's

Looking for info on Luther Scarbrough, born about 1855 in Roane County, TN. Son of James Balem Scarbrough and Mary Poland.

My Grandfather John W. Scarbro (b. 1894, d. 1965) said that his Uncle Luther went to Texas and was never heard from again. Cannot find any record of this Luther.

There is one tantalizing lead as to a Luther Scarborough in Arkansas or Oklahoma in late 1800's, but have not gotten any response as to where he originated. It's possible/probable that Uncle Luther went to Ark or Okla instead of Texas, so this could be him, but the one who mentioned it has not responded to my request for more info.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Phil
I just purchased a box full of old photos and appear to be from part of the Scarboro Family.

The names listed are:
P.H. Scarboro, Jr. of Concord

These have no last names.

Edna
Wilson
Grace
J.C.
Pete
Lonnie
Walter
Jack
Cletus
Gladys
Wayne

They all appear to be from the 1920's-1930's.
If this matches anyones family let me know.

Don Howell
Kentucky
I am just trying to find out how my father and grand/greatgrandfather relate to your ansestors. I explained that my greatgrandfather was caucasian, and that Scarboro is a Europeian name. I do believe that my family worked for slave owners (I could not think of any reason back during those days how we could hav accquired an "English" name.

Lastly, I like to meet fellow Scarboro's because I have not had many in my life. I spent a lifetime in the Armed Forces.

Hi Troy,

Sorry after I had posted to you I noticed that I gave you one pice of incorrect information.

It was James Scarborough who owned slaves, not Ivey.

James can be found in the 1840 census Muscogee county District 724 page 319 line 12.
He owned 6 slaves. 3 males age 10 and under 24 years. 1 male age 56 and under 100 years. He also owned 1 female under 10 years and one female age 56 years and under 100 years.

Sorry about that. That' what I get for thinking faster than I should.

Take care
Laura

Hi Penny,

I noticed you posted the WBTS information for George , Samuel and William Scarboro (scarborough). I am sure that most everyone knows this but just in case:

George, Samuel H. and William A were brothers. They were the sons of Jackson and Eliza Scarborough. Jackson was born in Burke County, Ga circa 1815/1816. Jackson was my great, great, great grandfather. They can be located in 1850 in the McNorton's District, Muscogee County census. After that (1860 onwards) they can be located in Emanuel County.

I am the descendant of Samuel H Scarborough(Scarboro) (gg grandfather) married E Susanah P Janes (possibly Jones). Their son was Thomas T, Scarboro married Alice Tutt. Thomas T and Alice had a daughter named Willie Anna Scarboro (my grandmother).

From what I have been able to determine so far, the name in this line is spelled Scarborough pretty consistently until my great grandfathers generation. It is at his generation that I begin to see it spelled with and without the ugh almost randomly depending upon who is taking the information (census etc). However, from then forward it seems to be spelled almost exclusively Scarboro. My grandmother spelled her name Scarboro and I have noticed all her brothers WWI Draft registration cards are spelled Scarboro.

Anyone researching this family, I would be happy to exchange information. Although I do not have much info before Jackson, I am afraid.

Sincerely,

Laura

Hey, this is Troy Scarboro, Sr., are the people you gave all this history on caucasian or black? I am trying to find out what is the link to me and my ancestors from North Carolina, whether is through slavery or what ever. Please e-mail me directly if you may at panther056@aol.com. Thank you

He died abt 1938 and is buried in Asheville, NC. We think she was from Indiana possibly. They did not have children, she went back home after his death and my mothers family lost contact with her. Just curious as to whether she later married and had children or about her life.
Ha..I AM WHITE! you gave me a chuckle (sorry) But I DO understand why you mentioned that because there were a few family of black Scarboros. We too come from the line of Scarboro. Fran Henle Taylor has our line. I don't know if we are related to you or not. I have only just begun this search, and found her. I just happened across the listing about a G.W. Scarboro as I searched some of the archives. There were other things as well..Census & I believe a couple of land documents. ftp.rootsweb.com then click on the PUB folder... this is the site that I went to..as you can see it is a ftp site which does take a while to download. If you have problems let me know & I will send directions how. Hope this helps.

Unless there was a mixed marriage :). Also, the Scarboros' you mentioned in your e-mail all had "UGH's" at the end of their names in which we don't. My Scarboro's have a North Carolina history. Are you affiliated with that?

sorry, it wasn't. my father was claude r baucom. his mother, my grandmother was cleo patra scarboro. her father was james robert scarboro. her mother was anna weathers. his father, my great grandfather was george w scarboro. his wife was marrina. anna's father was w w weathers and his wife was frances. that's all I have been able to discover about my grandmothers family. I've been able to trace the baucom side back to the 1700's when the first one came here but can find very little about my grandmother's side of the family.
thanks anyway
ron baucom

JA Scarboro was my great grandfather. He was father of Mattie Scarboro who Married Arthur Lyman Miller, who was my grandmother on my father's side. JA Scarboro was also a Baotist minister and wrote a book that I have posted on the web: http://home.att.net/~jamesmiller20/GODSPLAN.htm
I have photos of him as well as of his father and grandfather. And other records. I am trying now to transfer all my records to web pages but not there yet.
Jim Miller
