Her mother was Emma Myria Scarbrough, born 1868 also in Angelina Co, Tx. Her parents were Horace Monroe Scarbrough, born 1824 and Mariah Jane Bascomb, born 1834 TN. His parents were Silas S Scarbrough, born 1799 NC and Martha Patsy Robinson also born 1799 in NC. I can't seem to find anything past Silas & Martha.
2 Washington Scarboroughs of Columbia Co FL? 1870 qnd 1880

In researching Washington Dallas Scarborough of GA & FL, I came across Washington Scarborough in the 1870 and 1880 Columbia Co FL census. The problem is that a fellow researcher believes the one in the 1870 census is NOT the same person as in the 1880 census. Both Washington Scarboroughs claim birth in Georgia. There is a slight difference in what would be the birth year -- not unusual for the census. So far I've not found evidence to indicate what happened to the 1870 family if it is a different Washington Scarbrorough or where they might have moved, or if catastrophic illness befell them and he simply remarried and began an entirely new family. Available death and marriage records have not been enlightening. Below are the 2 census records from 1870 and 1880 Florida. Does anyone recognize the 1870 family? I would very much like to clarify, eliminate or place in context the 1870 family as they do or do not relate to the 1880 family.

1870 Federal Census: Lake City P.O., Columbia Co., FL, p.156, hh #1211, l.26, Scarborough, Washington, 31, farm laborer, b.GA; Scarborough, Sarah L., 25, b.FL; Scarborough, Emma, 6, b.FL; Scarborough, Julius, 3, b.FL; Scarborough, James, 1,b.FL.

1880 Federal Census: 4th District, Columbia Co., SC, ED 20, p.33/372A notes in the hh: Scarborough, Wash, 35, farmer, b.GA, p:GA/GA; Scarborough, Milley, 32 b.SC, p: SC/SC; Scarborough, Mellvin, 11, b.FL; Scarborough, Wesley, 9, b.FL; Scarborough, Renny, 8, b.FL; Scarborough, Emma, 5, b.FL; Scarborough, Marvin, 2, b.FL; King, Ellen, niece, 18, b.SC, p: SC/SC.

Hello Robert: I read your post with interest. I have just started picking up the Parnells again after a long interval. Millie Abigail Parnell, who married W.D. Scarborough, was a daughter of John Ira Parnell and his wife, Martha Northcutt of Darlington Co., SC. (I am a Northcutt researcher). Martha's parents were William Northcutt (RS-SC) and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Stewart. Would be interested to hear from you. You indicate one of your forebears (not sure by your writing you mean Marvin Oswald or Sallie Edge) was Indian. Interested to hear more about that, also.

Frances Scarborough b. 1693 in NC

I'm trying to find accurate information on the ancestry of Frances Scarborough. Most trees list her father as William and mother as Frances Sheppard/Shephard. For the William with the birth date 1667 and death 1717 as most have it, his wife is actually Ann. Frances' father may be William but he must have different birth and death dates. Also, if Frances Shephard is her mother, there is only birth date and death location listed in most trees, even though detailed information is given for her parents.

If anyone has information on any of these individuals I am anxious to hear.

Thanks,
Tracy

Hello Dan,

Nice of you to reply.
Thank you for this information...it will definitely give me alot of home work to do reading and deciphering.

I have one of the few copies of The Kirk Family Genealogy, compiled by Miranda L. Roberts published in 1912. In it there is a page with a copy of seven generations of Scarborough signatures, plus two my grandfather and mother added. The first signature is one of John Scarborough with a date 1700. He would have been my seventh great grandfather.
Another one with the date 1912 was Henry W. Scarborough who was my great grandfather.

1970 Elizabeth Scarborough
1962 Howard Scarborough
1912 Henry W. Scarborough
1884 Watson Scarborough
1853 Isaac Scarborough
1794 Isaac Scarborough
1760 John Scarborough
1738 Robert Scarborough
1700 John Scarborough
dates are of when they had signed. It does not list were these signatures came from, but probably from family bibles and marriages.

In this genealogy are notes Margaret Kirk b. 1739 marring John Scarborough 5, 8, 1760 who was a descendant grandson?) of a ...."John Scarborough variously described as a blacksmith, whitesmith, and coatsmith, belonging to Peel Monthly Meeting of Friends of London,"
It gives the accounts as you posted about Chapter V.

My pop-pop was born and raised in Bucks county and attended the Bucks County Meeting House were he also went to school. The cemetery has many many of my ancestors.

Some of my family members has a couple of documents I would love to see. One is a marriage certificate written on a sheep skin. If I remember correctly, William Penn was one of the witnesses. Also, I believe there is a land deed , also signed by Penn. We always had some maps hanging on our walls. I think my sister has one or two, and will quiz her more about them.

Thanks again and hope to fill in some missing spots.
p.s. I have another big task following my Pennell ansestry... my understanding they came from England about 1680's also as practicing quakers.
Yes, I-along with Marylou Colver-am the researcher of the Snippets...And, I for some time have been researching Mary and her family; my husband also happens to be a Hoadly descendant so Mary's story has particular interest for me...Her mother Laura experienced much tragedy in her life too-she passed away at age 50. There's is actually much more to Mary's story-however, indeed these are "snippets".

Thanks for taking the time to share your "Snippets" find...Will let Marylou know such is know being referenced by some on Ancestry.com...She will be happy.

Trust you enjoy Snippets...There will be another issue next May in celebration of National Historic Preservation month. Take good care, Erin

PS: Do you happen to live in Lake Oswego? Any ideas for other interesting snippet subjects?

Hi,

I just happened to be reading an article in a publication from our city of Lake Oswego and there is mention of Theodore Woolsey Scarborough in the paper. I thought the story was interesting and Googled his name and your request popped up. Here is the link http://lakeoswegohistory.blogspot.com/

His Daughter Mary S. Young was an avid gardener and left the state of Oregon 132 acres of land as a state park. The land was originally a gift to her husband Thomas Earl Young.

Hope this helps!
Re: John son of John son of William son of William or Issac

I would be very cautious about any proposed ancestry of John Scarborough who married Sarah Ashby. Sources need to be cited and provided so that an accurate assessment can be made. Here is what I think for what it is worth:

John Scarborough is the earliest for which there is strong evidence to connect to later descendants. His year of birth is not well documented. Several authors quote records of the Society of Friends that he died in 1706 at either age 66 or 60. If that is true, it would suggest the years 1640 or 1646 as possibilities. About 1640 would be more likely if he was married in 1663.

From the History of Bucks County, by W. W. H. Davis:

--------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER V

SOME ACCOUNT OF EARLY SETTLERS - 1682 TO 1685

John Scarborough, of London, coach smith, arrived in 1682, with his son John, a youth, and settled in Middletown. He returned to England in 1684 to bring his family, leaving his son in charge of a friend. Persecutions against the Friends ceasing about this time, and his wife, who was not a member, not caring to leave home, he never returned. He gave his possessions in this county to his son, with the injunction to be good to the Indians from whom he had received many favors. Paul Preston, of Wayne county, has in his possession a trunk that John Scarborough probably brought with him from England. On the top, in small, round brass-headed nails, are the letters and figures: I. S. 1671.
--------------------------------------------------

Conflicting proposals exist about the ancestry of John Scarborough (~1640-1706). Various lineages that have been published:

C. J. Scarborough Thomas, The Family of Scarborough:

Isaac (1560-?), of London
William (1598-?), of London
John (1620-?), of London
John (1649-1706), of London

Some Quaker Families - Scarborough/Haworth:

Isaac (1560-?), lived in London
William (1598-1680), of London
John (1620-?), died in England
John (1649-1706), of London, m. Sarah Ashley

Corrected Early Scarborough Line, Some Quaker Families - Scarborough/Haworth:

William, m. Agnes Farrar
William (1599-1680), m. Agnes King
John (1638/39-1706), m. Sarah Ashby
John, first white settler in Buckingham-Solebury Valley, Pennsylvania

Marilyn L. Winton uses circumstantial evidence to “prove” John Scarborough Sr.’s ancestry as detailed in “The Parentage of John Scarborough, Sr. (ca1640-1706),” Scarborough/Haworth Events, Vol. 3, No. 2, November 1992. However, as I review that article it causes me some concern about claiming these Scarboroughs as our own.

Marilyn Winton believed that the list of children of John and Sarah (Ashby) Scarborough was incomplete and found three children, including one named Baldwin, in a review of the Quaker burial records for the London and Middlesex meetings. Using this name as a “marker” she discovered a Baldwin Scarbrow, son of William and Anne Scarbrow of Soulbury, Buckingham, England. Her search of the Soulbury parish registers found a baptism for a John Scarbrow 14 February 1638/39, son of William and Agnes Scarbrow. An Agnes Scarbrow was buried 22 March 1638/39. Winton assumes that this Agnes is the wife of William but admits that no relationship was given in the burial entries. No baptisms were found of another Agnes Scarbrow that might indicate that the Agnes who died in 1638/39 could have been a child of some other Scarborough family. If this Agnes is the mother of John, then she died shortly after his birth and would explain the three children baptized after the her death as children of William and Anne Scarbrow. No marriage record was found for William and Anne in the Soulbury register. Winton speculates that William married Anne about 1640/41.

Another Baldwin, son of John Scharborough, was baptized 26 October 1628 in Soulbury and Winton claims that this John must have been a brother or cousin of William Scarborough but provides no documentation or explanation for this assumption so I would remain cautious about this connection. Several other Scarborough families also had children baptized during 1628-1645: Henry and Mary Scarbrow and Richard and Jane Scarbrow.

Additional arguments presented by Marilyn Winton and used as supporting evidence are:

• John Scarborough, Sr. died 1706 “aged about 66,” and birth therefore about 1640 which “fits” the baptism of John Scarbrow of Soulbury in 1638/39.

• Naming pattern of the children of John and Sarah (Ashby) Scarborough’s children.

• The place names similarity between Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Buckinghamshire, England (also known as Bucks). As John Scarborough, Jr. was to have been the first white settler in the Buckingham-Solebury valley of Pennsylvania, the possibility of John naming these areas is also used to bolster the connection of John to the Buckingham, England, Scarboroughs.

Problem areas:

(1) How are John Scarborough Sr. and his wife Sarah Ashby proven to be the parents of the children, noted in English Quaker burial records: Sarah, Baldwin, and Richard? This is required to connect to the name Baldwin. What is the source?

Henry W. Scarborough, in a letter to Mrs. George Sibley Pilcher, 21 April 1922, referring to his review of the Collections of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, English Friends’ Records, Quarterly Meeting of London and Middlesex, Burials, wrote:

“Sarah Scarbrow died 6th month 15, 1674, at the age of 12 days, residence Hosier Lane, daughter of John and Sarah, died of fits, member of Peel Meeting, buried at Checker Ally.”

“Baldwin Scarborrow died 1st month, 19th, 1678-9 at the age of 2 weeks, in the Parish of Pulchers, son of John, died of wind and gripes, member of Peel meeting, buried at Checker Ally.” [No mention of the name of Baldwin's mother.]

“Richard Scarrborow died 6th month 29th, 1680, age two weeks, Parish of Sepulchers, residence Hosier Lane, London, son of John and Mary, died of convulsions, member of Peel Meeting, buried at Checker Ally.” [This presents a problem as John mentions his wife SARAH in his 1696 will.]

Does this indicate at least two John Scarborough families of the Peel Meeting: John & Sarah and John & Mary? Henry Scarborough had a list of twelve Scarborough individuals in his letter but only these three were associated with a John and the Peel meeting. Are there other Scarboroughs in the Parish of Sepulchers or the nearby area? There are Scarboroughs who were members of the Ratcliff & Barking Monthly Meeting and also the Southwark Monthly Meeting.

(2) How is the christening (baptism?) of these three children reconciled with their burial in the Quaker burial ground of Checker Alley, Bunhill Fields? Their mother Sarah was not a Quaker according to historical accounts, so perhaps she insisted the children be baptized but did not insist on burial in a cemetery of the Church of England. What is the source of these names and dates?

(3) How is John Scarborough Sr., who died in 1706 in London, proven to be the son of William and Agnes (King) Scarborough, and therefore born 1638/39 in Woburn, other than the using the name Baldwin. Does other supporting evidence exist? Can other Scarborough families be found that provide a similar fit? Are there John and William Scarboroughs in or near London that also fit the time period? The question is: how do we get from London to Woburn?

(4) William Scarborough (1599-1680) of Hosier Lane died in London and was to have been buried in the Friends burial ground (Bunhill). How is it proven that he is the same William Scarborough baptized 4 November 1599 in Woburn, Bedfordshire? Again, what is the trail from London to Woburn?

(5) Place name similarity between Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Buckinghamshire (Bucks), England. Is there evidence that John Scarborough Jr., or his father named the areas of Bucks County, Pennsylvania? Carrie Thomas mentions that Solebury Township was organized about 1700, but that the name is found in old deeds as early as 1682, even before William Penn came to the province and also prior to the arrival of the Scarboroughs. If that is true, it would be evidence against the Scarborough’s influence about naming Solebury after that in Buckinghamshire. W. W. H. Davis, in his History of Bucks County, writes that the origin of the name of Solbury Township is unknown and gives details of many settlers prior to 1700. Amor Preston claims to be the first white man to settle in Buckingham Township, although again Davis says that it cannot be proved. In 1706, Buckingham Township was called New Buckingham to avoid confusion with Bristol Township which was still called Buckingham. The claim that John Scarborough named these areas is very tantalizing, but remains to be proved.

Some genealogies (almost all without any reference to sources) have John’s father as: John Scarborough. Born about 1620 in England. Died in London, England. Occupation: blacksmith/coachman. He was a member of the Peel Monthly Meeting. John married Anne (----). The most common source of this information seems to be Some Quaker Families - Scarborough and Haworth, Volume 1, p. 1, but no specific documentation other than a general list of references is provided in this work. Some believe that the John (b. 1620) and the John (d. 1706) are one and the same and not two individuals. Roger S. Boone researched much of the Scarborough - Haworth history and his papers could provide some clues.

Isaac Scarborough (b. 1560) is also mentioned as the oldest known ancestor of the Scarboroughs, and again most cite Some Quaker Families - Scarborough and Haworth, Volume 1, p. 1, — although no specific source is cited, Huldah Hoover McLean’s Genealogy of the Herbert Hoover Family (1967) may have been the reference used.

Carrie Thomas’ work may be the real source for Isaac and John Scarborough (b. 1620) and also gives a reference to documents that could resolve the issue: “John Scarborough died April, 1706, aged 60 years, and was buried in the Burnhill [sic] Fields Burying Ground. There is a William Scarborough, born 1598, also buried there, who is supposed to have been the grandfather of John. He also resided on Hosier Lane and belonged to Peel Monthly Meeting. A descendant of John Scarborough, who has devoted years to this research, sends the following, ‘taken partly, from letters passing between John 1620 and John 1649, now filed with the Bucks County, Pennsylvania Historical Society in the Archives of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Society in Philadelphia. Isaac Scarborough of London, born about 1560, had a son William of London, born 1598. This William was the father of John, born 1620, who resided on Hosier Lane and who was listed as a blacksmith, coachsmith and whitesmith, and was a member of Peel Monthly Meeting. John, 1620, was the father of John 1649, who bought land from William Penn in 1682 and brought his young son with him to America.’”

Unfortunately, Thomas does not identify who the Scarborough researcher was, although I believe it may be Henry Wismer Scarborough, an attorney in Philadelphia who presented a copy of the will of John Scarborough (~1640-1706) to Swarthmore College in 1933. I do not know if contemporary genealogists have found these letters for review. I could not find the letters or a reference to them in a search of the files at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania or the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania 24-25 October 2000. Perhaps they are in archives in Bucks County. They would prove most valuable. The Library of Congress is reported to have manuscripts relating to the ancestry of Henry W. Scarborough but could not locate the file when I requested it in December 2000 [LOC call number CS71.S3 1936 fol in Rare Books/Special Collections Reading Room - Jefferson LJ239]. However, Henry W. Scarborough did not seem to maintain the premise of Isaac as the original ancestor as noted in the following discussion.

In his 1922 letter to Mrs. Pilcher, Henry W. Scarborough wrote “William Scarbrow died 28 December 1680, at the age of 82 years, residence Hosier Lane, Pulchries Psh., London, died of age, member Peel Meeting, buried at Checker Ally.” Later in the letter, he presumed that William was the father of John Scarborough who came to Pennsylvania in 1682 and died in 1706. Henry W. Scarborough also wrote a chapter titled “The Quest for the Ancestors of Crispin Pearson” in the book Crispin Pearson of Bucks County, Pennsylvania 1748 - 1806 by complied by Annie Pearson Darrow, published in 1932. On page 84, Henry W. Scarborough wrote that the father of John Scarborough (d. 1706) probably was William Scarborough of Hosier Lane (d. 1680), who was a member of the Peel Monthly Meeting and is buried in the Chequers Alley Burial Ground. Henry Scarborough does not mention a JOHN as the father of John, only his suspicion that WILLIAM was the father of John.

Marilyn L. Winton writes in an addendum to Some Quaker Families - Scarborough/Haworth, 1991, Vol. 1: “Isaac Scarborough listed in vol. 1 as the earliest ancestor: I have never read any supporting documentation for this man anywhere, and in personal research working back from known facts, have discovered no Isaac, let alone one in position to be connected with this family. It would be my professional opinion that we should not quote Isaac as the earliest progenitor until this at least has some circumstantial evidence, let alone proof.”

The earliest Isaac in later generations after John Scarborough (d. 1706) was Isaac Scarborough (b. before 1762) who was the son of Robert Scarborough (1708-1805) and therefore a great grandson of the first John. Another Isaac (1746-1825) was the son of Euclidus Scarborough (1714-1795) and would have been a great-great grandson of the first John. If Isaac was the name of the first John’s grandfather or even great grandfather, the name disappears from the family for quite a long time.

Henry W. Scarborough’s grandfather was named Isaac (1804-1883), as was his great grandfather Isaac (1768-1851). Maybe there was speculation in the family about an Isaac being the first in the family, fueled by the old wooden chest with the inscription “I. S. 1671” as mentioned in Davis’ history, and misinterpreted as representing ISAAC rather than JOHN. I have not seen any of his correspondence prior to 1922, but Henry W. Scarborough does not mention anyone prior to William as late as 1932 and so seems not to agree with the Isaac ancestry. The name Isaac cannot be dismissed completely but the truth requires some investigation and documentation about the source of that name.

That info regarding "James Allen Scarborough, king of Wales" was a hoax that many people thought was real. Too, it must be realized that there are still people posting that kind of info of which a great number of people will copy it over and over and never mind whether it is true or not. The people who originate such records seem to get a thrill out of the many times their false info is copied.

I am pleased that you questioned the validity of the "James Allen Scarborough" info. Good for you!

He did live in Grimby as a Fisherman and did this with his brothers James & Charles - who later moved to Doncaster and established the famous Scarborobough Bros for over 100yrs and closed in the late 1960s due to a motorway being built.

I hope this helps!

Sinclerey Roy
