Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting and how exciting that you are going to do research in Kleinsteinach! I so wish I could get over there to see where my ancestors were from and try to find out more about the Schloss family. I would be surprised if there was not a connection between our families and will give some additional info that I have in case you come across anything. Thanks for your offer to let me know if there is a link.

My GGG Grandfather is Seligman Schloss born April 30, 1830 in Kleinsteinach. He came to America in April of 1853 and ended up in Detroit. He had one brother named Emanuel Schloss born Feb 1823 in Kleinsteinach who may have emigrated earlier than he.

Their father's name was Abraham Schloss (possibly Abraham David Schloss) born approx. 1790 in Kleinsteinach. Some info points to the mother being Mirjam (or Myriam) Straus though I have other info that states that her maiden name is Marion.

That is about all that I have but if run across anything and are willing to share, I would be very grateful and, even if not, I would love to hear about your trip and see any photos you would be willing to share.

Thanks again for getting in touch and have a safe and wonderful trip!

My email address that I use for family tree stuff is holmesdlgenealogy@gmail.com if you want to contact me directly and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help aid you in your search.

best regards,

David

I have been doing genealogy on our family (Schloss/Klein/Jandorf/Feldstein). My great, great, great grandfather, Aaron Schloss was born in Kleinsteinach in 1780. Aaron had a brother Abraham and I have yet to verify if Abraham is the brother of Aaron. Aaron left Germany with his wife Rose, and two sons Hiam Baer and Lazarus and went to Philadelphia around 1843.

My wife and I are going to Kleinsteinach on June 8, 2012 and will be working with a genealogist in Kleinsteinach. We will return about June 20 and if there is some definitive link, I will happily contact you.

Bill
Feldstein
Indio, Ca.

Thanks, not sure if there is any connection, but Latvia in history was part of Russia. Do you have some names of relatives from Latvia that I might review to see if there is a connection? I can't find any info from Russia on relatives. My Grandfather was Morris Schloss, his father was Abraham married to Doris Lasofsky (spelling could be off). Let me know if you could share some names.
thanks, Steve

Just saw your post. I am researching my schloss family and most live in NY city around 1896. Abraham Schloss, married to Dora Lasofsky, had four children - Morris, Sadie, Fannie, and Rhoda. Morris is my grandfather and married Beatrice Schenker. His son, Jeremy is my father. Any connections?
stevschlos@aol.com

Late the game and saw this post. I am researching my schloss family - also from Bronx. Grandfather was Morris Schloss married to Beatrice Schenker (maiden). Morris had three siblings - Rhoda, Fannie, and Sadie. They lived on Creston street, NY. His father was Abraham, married to Dora Lasofsky but not much beyond that. My father was Jeremy Schloss and we live in California now.
See if this connects, Stevschlos@aol.com

My father was a Schloss and we are a Jewish family, but the story is that they changed their name from something else at Ellis Island, I don't know from what.

Lots of people changed names, or took surnames for the first time in the 1800s.

Schloss is neither typically "Jewish" nor typically gentile. I've met both kinds of Schlosses.

It really depends on the family, where they were from and what they did as it can be an occupational name ie , schlosser for locksmith etc or a place name as in schloss for castle.

Many if not all of the Jewish Schloss's are actually Schlosser's and have had the 'er' dropped at some point in their history from the end of the surname shortening it to Schloss. This is apparently very common in America.

There were also other Schloss's who never shortened the name, non jewish and of Lutheran Faith if any.

As to it's origin in it's original form, not one of the variations or shortened forms of schlosser, look towards Breslau - Aber Schloss 1360 & Nurnberg - Michael Schloss 1368.

I live in Australia and all of the german immigrants here were of Lutheran faith, I have yet to meet a jewish Schloss.

Good luck.

Helen Schloss was born in Vilna, Russia, was the daughter of a rabbi, attended the Rand School (NYC), was a public health nurse in NYC, Malone, and Little Falls, NY. She was a Socialist, friend of Helen Keller. She was a union supporter and worked with Matilda Rabinowicz and Big Bill Haywood. Her arrest record follows her across the country. She also was a speaker at a NYC Suffrage Rally in NYC. She set up medic tents at strikes in Colorado and traveled to Russia with the Friends Service Committee around 1920. There she served as a nurse to those in the midst of the civil war. And then... her trail fades until her death in 1965. I can connect her to no one. Any help out there?

Hi Deborah

It's nice to find someone else on this side of the family who is interested in family history. I thought I was the only one apart from a cousin by marriage who tried years ago to find the American family, with no luck. He give me what info he had, just a few names & the fact that they ran a hardware store & I was able to find them. It's interesting the store is still in the family.
Morris did have a daughter Esther, he had, as far as I know, eight children altogether.
Did you know that Jacob, Bertha & Morris had a brother Alexander? I've also found another sister, but I've no idea what happened to her. Their father's name was Hyman.

I can't contact you privately via Ancestry, as it seems I have to be a subscriber to do that, & I haven't renewed yet this year. I don't want to give out my usual email address on a public board, so I've set up a new Hotmail account.
Do please contact me on: rajohn.s220@hotmail.co.uk
& I'll send you my usual email address.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Rachel

Rachel

I was so pleased to get your response. Prior to this, I had never heard of Morris or Jacob Schloss. I thought it was Samuel Sieger's brother who went to Boston and whose current relatives have a hardeware store in Boston but now it looks as if it was Bertha's brother, Morris. You are absolutely right about the number of Sieger children both before and after emigrating, oddly including one called Nathan and one called Hyman (names running in the family perhaps?)

My own parents went to Boston on holiday about 50 years ago and while there looked up a relative called Esther so that must have been Morris's daughter.

As you correctly thought I have just started to trace my family tree - I started just last Friday in fact. As I said my family knowledge is very small, sadly, so if you have any more information about the Schloss or Sieger family I would be so glad to hear it.

Deborah

Yes, definitely a connection. My grandfather Jacob Meyer Schloss had a sister Bertha who married Samuel Sieger.
I believe Samuel & Bertha, along with her mother, & four children arrived in England after 1901 & before 1905.
As far as I know, Bertha & Samuel had four more children in Nottingham.
I haven't found out any more about the American relations since my post, but it's nice to know Morris's descendants are still there. Perhaps one day one of them will decide to trace their family tree :)
Have you just started tracing yours?

My wife's maiden name is Schloss. Her family has been Catholic for many generations. We live in Cincinnati. From my research here there are definitely both Jewish and Catholic groups. As others have mentioned the translation is simply Castle. It seems logical non Jewish groups may have also adopted this name. I seriously doubt if it is exclusively Jewish in origin, although a large percentage of the Schloss population seems to Jewish.

I don't know if there is a c,onnection here as my family knowledge is tiny. My Grandmother was born Bertha Schloss and married to Samuel Sieger (or similar Polish name) who came to Nottigham, England somewhere between 1902 and 1904. I am told there was a brother who went to the US and settled in Boston. I beleive there is a connection with a family named Gordon who own a hardware shop in Boston. And I believe the current generation are called Harley and Candy.

Any response to this?

Thank you for your reply! Actually, Hermann and Mary are my husband's great-grandparents. Hermann's son, Herman Hirsch Schloss is my husband's grandfather. Herman Hirsch married twice - once in Minnesota and then he moved with his older daughter to Iowa, where my husband's family is from. There he married Katherine Sommers, and they had 13 children (including one from his earlier marriage). My father-in-law is one of two who remain living today.

The family knows very little about relatives beyond Herman Hirsch and Katherine. In fact, it was only in recent years that we discovered that there were brothers (Horace and Fred), which is my main purpose in seeking out information on them - to find out if there are other relatives out there. It's very exciting to find out more about Fred!

Re: Horace L. Schloss of Milwaukee

I have done a bit of looking at this family. Edwin Tucker
and Florence Talley Tuckers' daughter Opal Eunice Tucker
married Fred J. Schloss in Johnson County, KS. The obit of Fred J. Schloss in Jackson County, MO shows that his parents were Herman Schloss and Mary Weber Schloss. I have
been able to track the family of Herman and Mary Weber Schloss in Minnesota. First Herman married Laura Weber in
Cook County, Illinois. I have figured out from the census
that Laura Weber is actually Laura Mary Weber. By the time
of the 1900 census in Minnesota Herman is dead. Laura is
shown to have three children living with her at one time or other. --- Herman Hirsh Schloss, Horace Lewis Schloss and Fred John Arthur Schloss. I have found the 1900 census, 1910
census and 1920 census in various counties. There is also
the 1905 state of Minnesota census. There is a Mary Schloss
that died in Becker county and I think this is probably Laura Mary Schloss because there is a draft record for Fred
J. Schloss in that county. Fred is found in Ottertail County in 1920 while your Horace L. Schloss is in Hennepin,
County. Your Horace L. Schloss was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Herman was born in Illinois and Fred was born in
either Wisconsin or Minnesota. His death certificate says
Wisconsin but some of the census are saying Minnesota.---the
state lines are close. I also have been searching for the
1930 census in regard to these men. I actually have no
known connection to these families but the fact that I
am looking into the surname Talley. It appears that the
elder Herman was born in Germany and Laura Mary Weber was
born in Ohio. Fred had a first wife and a son by that first
wife.---I can't find them after 1920. He and Opal left no children or grandchildren. Opal married again to Floyd Stewart. Her obit shows she had a stepdaugter.---I don't know if that daughter is from the first or second husband. Fred came to the Kansas City area around 1924 according to his death certificate. I am interested in learning more
about this Schloss family. I would be interested in knowing if Herman and Laura Mary Schloss have any living relatives.

Hi, I don't know if you'll get this since you posted this 9 years ago, but I'll try anyways.

Jacob(Jack) Schloss migrated to the US and his brother, Sebastian Schloss, who is my 2nd Great-Grandfather, also migrated to the US in 1908. Sebastian also lived in Montana, but soon moved to North Dakota where they had a farm. My Great-Grandmother, Margaret Schloss, told me that when her dad (Sebastian) came over from Russia that his whole family did not come over, so we still had/have relatives living in Russia. I don't know if I have a picture of Jacob's sister Margaret, who married Raymond Frank, but I do have other pictures. I also have a picture of Jacob's daughter, Johanna.

Hi

My great great grandmother was a Jenny Schloss from Frankfurt, and yes, she was Jewish. I saw someone mentioned that their Schloss family was from Offenbach? Jenny married my great great grandfather Liebmann Wallerstein there, and I know there are some Schloss graves in the Jewish graveyard there.

I believe the Schloss family was quite well-to-do in Frankfurt (though not sure about my actual branch of it). Certainly the Schlosses that went to England formed 'the Cousinhood' with other very wealthy Jewish families such as the Rothschilds, Montefiores and Sassoons - there's evidence of lots of intermarriage between these families.

Hope that helps!

Claire Wallerstein.
